Smart DNS and a VPN do different jobs. Smart DNS can redirect selected DNS or location checks for services supported by its provider, but it does not encrypt your TV’s connection or hide the TV’s IP address. A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server, encrypts it, and masks your IP. Choose based on whether you need a compatible streaming-access method or VPN privacy protections—and check that your TV and chosen service support the setup.

What’s the difference between Smart DNS and a VPN?

Smart DNS changes how selected DNS or location checks are handled for compatible services. A provider may direct those checks through its own system so a supported app can receive the location information it expects. The TV’s ordinary traffic is not placed inside an encrypted tunnel, however, and the exact behavior depends on the provider’s implementation.

A VPN creates a connection through a VPN server. Traffic is routed through that server, the connection is encrypted, and the service receiving the connection sees the VPN server’s IP rather than the TV’s usual public IP. The VPN therefore changes both the route and the privacy characteristics of the connection.

Question Smart DNS VPN
What happens to traffic? Selected DNS or location checks may be redirected for services the provider supports; implementation varies. Traffic is routed through a VPN server.
Does it encrypt the connection or hide the TV’s IP? No. Smart DNS does not provide VPN encryption or hide the TV’s IP. Yes. A VPN encrypts traffic and masks the user’s IP address.
How might you set it up on a TV? Usually by entering an address in the TV’s network DNS settings; exact menus depend on the model and provider. Through a native VPN app if the TV supports one, or through a compatible router.
Will it unlock a particular streaming service? Not necessarily. Support depends on the provider, service, and region, and can change. Not necessarily. Availability depends on the service, provider, region, and device.
When is it a better fit? When you want a provider-supported DNS-based access option and do not need VPN privacy features. When you want encryption and IP masking, and can use a supported TV app or router setup.
What if the service uses HTTPS? HTTPS can still protect the app-to-service connection, but that protection is separate from Smart DNS. The VPN encrypts traffic between the TV or network and the VPN server; HTTPS may add another layer to the service connection.

Neither option makes you anonymous, and neither guarantees access to a particular streaming catalog. Smart DNS is not a VPN tunnel: it does not encrypt the TV’s general internet traffic. If an app or website uses HTTPS, that encryption is separate from Smart DNS and remains a property of the HTTPS connection. Conversely, a VPN should not be described as a guarantee of anonymity or as a universal way around a service’s regional rules.

Does Smart DNS encrypt a smart TV’s connection?

No. Smart DNS does not encrypt the TV’s connection or conceal its IP address. It changes how certain DNS or location checks are handled for supported services; it does not provide the privacy protections of a VPN.

That distinction matters if your goal is to protect traffic on a network or prevent services from seeing your usual IP address. Smart DNS is an access method, not a privacy shield. HTTPS can still encrypt a connection between an app and its service, but that does not turn Smart DNS into a VPN or hide the TV’s IP.

Think of DNS as part of the process of finding a service, not as a replacement for a secure tunnel. A DNS change can influence a supported location check while leaving the rest of the connection on its normal path. If you need the TV’s traffic routed through another network endpoint and encrypted on that route, the relevant technology is a VPN.

Can Smart DNS or a VPN guarantee access to a streaming catalog?

No. Streaming access is provider- and service-specific, and support can change. A setup that works with one provider, app, region, or TV may not work with another. A service can also apply its own checks beyond DNS, including the device’s region configuration or other connection signals.

For example, NordVPN’s current SmartDNS support documentation lists Amazon Prime (US region), Disney Plus (US region), Fox Now / Fox News (US region), MAX (US region), Netflix Originals, Paramount+, Peacock TV, and Fubo TV. This is a provider-specific list, not a guarantee that every title or app will work, and the supported services or regions may change. “Netflix Originals,” for example, is not the same promise as access to every Netflix catalog in every country.

Availability can also differ sharply between providers. PIA’s support article dated October 20, 2026, says its Smart DNS feature is no longer compatible with streaming services and can still be used for general DNS purposes. That statement applies to PIA’s feature as of that date; it does not establish the status of Smart DNS across the industry. An older tutorial that recommends PIA Smart DNS for a streaming app can therefore be out of date even if the TV instructions still look correct.

A TV’s own region settings can also matter. PIA’s support guidance for other television manufacturers, dated December 21, 2021, notes that region settings may affect apps and that some services can remain restricted. Changing a DNS address therefore cannot resolve every regional or app-availability restriction. If an app is unavailable in the TV’s configured country, DNS alone may not make the app appear in the TV’s store.

Which option should you choose for your TV?

Start with the job you need done. If encryption and IP masking are priorities, look for a VPN app compatible with your TV or a router that supports a VPN connection. If you are considering Smart DNS for access to a particular service, confirm that the provider currently supports that service, region, and device.

Choose a VPN when privacy features matter

A VPN is the relevant choice when you want traffic routed through a VPN server, encrypted, and associated with the VPN server’s IP rather than your usual IP. It does not guarantee anonymity or streaming access: services may restrict VPN connections, and compatibility varies.

On a TV, the practical question is how to connect. Some models support native VPN apps. If yours does not, a compatible router may provide another route, but support depends on the router and its firmware. A router-level setup can cover devices that cannot install an app, but it changes the network configuration for devices connected through that router, so check the provider’s instructions before making changes.

NordVPN documents both app and router options and describes Smart DNS as intended for devices that do not support its VPN app. That is a description of NordVPN’s product design, not a rule that every provider uses the same split. Confirm the exact TV operating system, country, provider, and router or firmware before selecting a method.

Consider Smart DNS when you do not need VPN protection

Smart DNS may suit a TV without a VPN app if the provider supports the service you want and lets you configure the TV’s DNS settings. It does not provide encryption or mask your IP, so it is the wrong choice if you need those VPN functions.

It can also be useful for a device on which the provider offers no native VPN application but does permit manual DNS configuration. That convenience is conditional: the TV must expose a manual DNS field, the provider must issue an address for the service, and the provider’s current support list must include the app and region you intend to use.

Check current service support before changing settings. A provider’s supported list can be limited by region and can change; PIA’s October 20, 2026, notice is an example of why an older guide or a general claim about Smart DNS may not reflect a provider’s current offering.

How do you set up Smart DNS on a smart TV?

The general flow is to obtain the DNS address from your chosen provider, enter it in the TV’s network settings, save the change, and restart the TV. Menu names and available settings vary by model, so use the TV maker’s instructions for the exact path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm compatibility. Check that the provider supports the streaming service, region, and TV configuration you plan to use. Do not assume that a listed service will work in every region. Also check whether the provider requires an account or a generated address tied to your connection.
  2. Generate or obtain the provider address. PIA’s smart-TV instructions describe generating a provider address before changing the TV’s DNS setting. The exact process depends on the provider; use the address it supplies rather than copying a public DNS address from an unrelated guide.
  3. Record the existing setting. Before editing the network page, note the current automatic setting or existing DNS values. This gives you a reference if you need to restore the TV’s original configuration.
  4. Open the TV’s network settings. Find the connection currently in use and its DNS setting. Menu labels vary, and the setting may be under network, internet, or connection options. The path can differ even between models from the same manufacturer.
  5. Change DNS from automatic to manual. Enter the address supplied by the provider in the DNS field. Avoid substituting an address from an unrelated service or changing other network fields unless the provider’s instructions specifically require it.
  6. Save the change and restart the TV. PIA’s setup instructions include saving and restarting. Then check the intended app or service; a successful DNS change does not itself prove that the service is supported.
  7. Restore the setting if necessary. If normal connectivity or an app is affected, return the DNS option to automatic or restore the recorded values, then follow the provider’s current troubleshooting guidance.

These are general steps, not a universal menu path. PIA explicitly cautions that TV menu names vary. If the TV will not accept a manual DNS entry, consult its model-specific instructions rather than guessing at a setting. Some televisions may expose only automatic DNS controls, in which case a Smart DNS method requiring manual entry is not available through that TV’s menus.

How do you use a VPN with a smart TV?

Use a native VPN app if your TV’s operating system and the VPN provider support one. If no compatible app is available, a VPN-capable router may be an option; check the specific TV, router, firmware, provider, and country before following setup instructions.

Use a TV app when one is supported

Confirm that the app is available for your TV’s operating system and region, then follow the provider’s instructions for installing and connecting it. The exact labels and steps depend on the TV and app, so there is no single reliable path for every smart TV. Check whether the provider documents the TV platform directly rather than assuming that an app made for a phone or computer will install on the television.

After connecting, verify the result in the app you actually want to use. A successful VPN connection confirms that the tunnel is active; it does not confirm that a streaming service permits that VPN endpoint or offers the catalog you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a compatible router if the TV has no VPN app

A router setup can route connected devices through a VPN without relying on a native TV app. It requires a router and firmware that support the VPN configuration you intend to use. Verify compatibility before changing router settings; the phrase “VPN router” alone does not establish that a particular model supports the needed setup.

Check whether the router supports the provider’s required client configuration and whether the firmware is current enough for that feature. Also confirm which devices will use the VPN route. A router-based solution may affect more than the TV, so make sure the arrangement matches your household network before enabling it.

What should you check before changing TV network settings?

Use this checklist to avoid choosing a method based on an assumption that may not fit your device or service:

  • Your goal: Decide whether you need VPN encryption and IP masking or only a provider-supported DNS-based access method.
  • Your TV’s capabilities: Check for a native VPN app or the ability to set DNS manually. Menus and features vary by model.
  • Your TV operating system and country: App availability and provider support can differ by platform and region.
  • Your router, if relevant: Verify VPN client support and firmware compatibility before relying on a router to cover the TV.
  • Your exact streaming service and region: Check the provider’s current support information. Lists are provider-specific and can change.
  • The TV’s region settings: Some apps may depend on the TV’s region configuration, and a DNS change may not resolve restrictions.
  • The privacy trade-off: Smart DNS does not hide the TV’s IP or encrypt its traffic as a VPN does.
  • The recovery plan: Know how to return DNS to automatic or disconnect the VPN if the TV loses access or an app behaves unexpectedly.
  • The age of the instructions: A setup guide can remain technically accurate while its provider’s streaming support has changed. Check the provider’s current documentation and publication date.

What if the setup does not work?

First identify which part is failing: the TV’s network configuration, the provider’s compatibility, or the streaming service’s own restrictions. Changing DNS addresses repeatedly will not fix a service that the provider no longer supports or an app restricted by its region settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The TV rejects manual DNS: Check the TV maker’s instructions for that model. Available options and menu names vary. If manual DNS is not exposed, consider whether the provider documents a router-based alternative or whether the method is unsupported on that TV.
  • The TV loses ordinary connectivity: Recheck the entered address, restore the previous automatic setting if needed, and use the provider’s current instructions. Do not alter unrelated network fields while troubleshooting.
  • The service still shows the same catalog or restriction: Recheck the provider’s current supported services and regions, and confirm the TV’s region settings. Neither Smart DNS nor a VPN guarantees access.
  • The app is missing from the TV: A DNS change cannot necessarily add an app to a region-limited television store. Check the TV’s configured country and the service’s device availability.
  • A provider’s instructions seem outdated: Check its current support information. In particular, PIA’s October 20, 2026, guidance says its Smart DNS is no longer compatible with streaming services.
  • You cannot find a VPN app for the TV: Check whether a compatible router setup is available for your equipment, or confirm that neither route is supported before committing to a configuration.
  • Smart DNS and VPN settings conflict: Do not assume the two configurations should be active together. A VPN can control DNS handling as part of its connection, so follow the specific provider’s instructions rather than stacking settings at random.

Smart DNS versus VPN: the practical decision

If the deciding requirement is privacy, choose the method that provides it: a VPN encrypts traffic and masks the IP, while Smart DNS does neither. If the deciding requirement is a DNS-based access method on a TV with no VPN app, Smart DNS may be appropriate only when the provider, service, region, and TV all line up.

Verify support immediately before setup because provider capabilities are not interchangeable. NordVPN’s documented SmartDNS list and PIA’s October 20, 2026, streaming-compatibility warning demonstrate why a provider-specific answer is more reliable than a blanket claim about Smart DNS. Finally, treat TV menus, router firmware, app stores, and region settings as part of compatibility—not as afterthoughts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Smart DNS change the IP address that streaming services see?

No. Smart DNS does not mask the TV’s IP address; that is a VPN function. A service may still use other signals, including region settings, when deciding what it makes available.

Can I run Smart DNS and a VPN together on my smart TV?

Do not assume the two configurations will work together: a VPN and a DNS service can both affect how a device connects. Check the instructions for the specific provider and setup before combining them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a TV need to be restarted after changing DNS?

PIA’s smart-TV setup instructions include saving the DNS change and restarting the TV. For another provider or TV model, follow its current setup guidance.

Is Smart DNS faster than a VPN for streaming?

There is no universal speed advantage established here. Performance depends on the service, network, provider, and configuration, so avoid choosing based on an assumed speed improvement.

Can Smart DNS make an unavailable TV app appear in my app store?

Not necessarily. A DNS change cannot resolve every app-store or region-setting restriction. Check the TV’s configured country, the app’s device support, and the provider’s current documentation.

Does Smart DNS protect me on public or shared Wi-Fi?

No. Smart DNS does not encrypt the TV’s general internet traffic or hide its IP. If protecting traffic on the network is the goal, investigate a VPN supported by the TV or its router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my TV has no VPN app and no manual DNS option?

Check whether a compatible router can run the VPN configuration you need. If neither the TV nor the router is supported, do not assume a workaround will provide the same protection or access.

Are Smart DNS support lists permanent?

No. Services and regions are provider-specific and can change. NordVPN publishes a current list for its SmartDNS, while PIA’s October 20, 2026, notice says its Smart DNS is no longer compatible with streaming services.

Can a VPN guarantee a different streaming catalog?

No. A VPN routes traffic through its server and masks the IP, but streaming services may restrict VPN connections and apply their own device, account, or regional checks.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Smart DNS redirects selected checks for supported services but does not encrypt traffic or hide your TV’s IP. A VPN encrypts traffic and masks the IP, using a TV app or compatible router. Confirm your exact TV, region, provider, and streaming service before changing DNS or router settings.
