The most important privacy setting on a smart TV is automatic content recognition (ACR), sometimes called viewing information or Smart TV Experience. It can identify what is playing on the television and, on some platforms, on devices connected through HDMI. Turn that collection off during setup, then separately review personalized advertising, voice controls, app permissions and optional service agreements.

Privacy does not depend only on the screen brand. Firmware version, country, model year and the agreements shown during setup change both the menu names and the functions that remain available. Use this guide to compare the privacy architecture before buying and to configure the exact model after installation.

What a smart TV can collect

A connected television can process more than the account details needed to run an app. The privacy-sensitive categories usually include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Viewing information: programs, channels, apps or other content detected by the TV. ACR systems can create a digital signature from what is displayed and match it with a content database.
  • Input and device information: signals from HDMI-connected game consoles, disc players, cable boxes or other sources. Roku states that Smart TV Experience can collect what you watch and when you watch it through the TV and connected devices when the feature is enabled.
  • Advertising and measurement data: identifiers and viewing categories used to select interest-based advertising, measure campaigns or build recommendations.
  • Voice data: microphone input, transcriptions, voice commands and information shared with an assistant or the TV manufacturer, depending on the service and permissions.
  • App and device telemetry: diagnostics, network information, crash reports and interactions with installed applications.

These categories are not equivalent. A TV can collect diagnostic information while ACR is disabled, and turning off ad personalization does not necessarily stop viewing collection. Treat each control as a separate decision rather than accepting one broad “privacy” choice.

ACR is the first setting to change

Automatic content recognition is the highest-impact viewing privacy control because it can observe content outside a single streaming app. Samsung describes its implementation as Viewing Information Services and says an opted-in TV generates signatures from viewing activity. Roku uses the names Smart TV Experience and ACR-related settings. The labels differ, but the question is the same: does the platform use what appears on the screen to personalize, measure or support advertising?

What ACR can include

Depending on the platform and market, ACR may cover built-in apps, live television and external inputs. It is therefore broader than the watch history inside an individual streaming service. The official Roku documentation says that, with Smart TV Experience enabled, information about “what you watch and when you watch” can be collected through the television and connected devices. Samsung likewise explains that its service uses viewing activity to enhance the viewing experience.

How to disable or limit it

  1. During first-run setup, read the optional privacy and service screens instead of accepting every optional feature automatically.
  2. Open the TV’s privacy, terms or smart-service settings and search for ACR, Viewing Information Services, Viewing Information, Smart TV Experience or Use information from TV inputs.
  3. Choose the opt-out or disable option, then confirm any second screen explaining the effect.
  4. Restart the TV or revisit the menu to verify that the setting stayed off after an update or account sign-in.

There is no universal Samsung or LG menu path that applies to every model and country. Firmware, model year and the agreement presented in your market can move the switch or change its name. If a menu search does not find it, consult the current privacy statement for the exact model before assuming that the feature is absent.

Viewing collection and ad personalization are different switches

Disabling personalized or interest-based advertising is worthwhile, but it is not a substitute for disabling ACR. Samsung documents viewing-information controls separately from advertising choices. Roku also documents separate advertising controls alongside Smart TV Experience.

  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Control What it addresses What it may not do
ACR or viewing information Collection and use of signals about programs, channels, apps or connected inputs Stop every diagnostic, account or app-data process
Interest-based or personalized ads Use of collected information to tailor advertising or audience categories Erase data already retained, or prevent all non-personalized ads
App permissions Access granted to individual installed apps Override platform-level collection that occurs outside an app
Voice and microphone permissions Microphone access, voice activation and sharing with assistant services Disable unrelated viewing or diagnostic collection

Read the platform’s notice for the exact result of each choice. An opt-out can change future use without deleting information collected before the change, and an advertisement can remain visible even when it is no longer selected using an interest profile.

Platform comparison: what to check before you buy

Compare the controls exposed by the exact model in your country, not only the logo on the bezel. The following matrix reflects the distinctions described in current platform documentation; menu availability can change with firmware and region.

Platform or implementation ACR/viewing control Ad-personalization control Voice controls Without optional agreements
Samsung smart TVs Called Viewing Information Services; Samsung says opted-in ACR creates signatures from viewing activity Documented separately from viewing-information choices Check the model’s microphone, wake-word and assistant settings; labels vary Not stated as one universal rule; verify the model and market during setup
LG smart TVs Current statements describe ACR-related choices and agreements rather than one universal menu path Review the applicable advertising and data-sharing notices Speech-to-text starts after a supported wake word or voice/AI button interaction; permissions apply to assistant services In some markets, LG says streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices and updates can remain available without optional data-driven services
Roku TV Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience; disable Use info from TV inputs where shown Separate advertising controls are documented Settings > Privacy > Voice includes microphone controls Check the setup agreement and account requirements for the specific model
Google Assistant on supported non-Android LG TVs Controlled by the TV’s applicable ACR and privacy settings Controlled by the TV and assistant policies separately Google says both Google and the manufacturer need permission to share information for Assistant and device voice services Depends on the TV’s market, manufacturer services and selected agreements

For a privacy-focused purchase, favor the platform that presents understandable, separate switches for viewing collection, advertising, voice and optional services in the country where you will use it. Ask to see the setup screens in a showroom or download the current model-specific privacy documentation before ordering.

Voice control: permission, activation and hardware mute

A voice feature is not one single setting. Evaluate three separate questions: when the microphone is active, what event starts recognition, and where a recording or transcription goes.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Activation behavior

LG states that speech-to-text begins after a supported wake word or a press of the voice or AI button. That means the service is designed to react to an activation event rather than continuously transcribe every sound, but the exact wake-word behavior depends on the model and enabled assistant. Roku exposes microphone controls under Settings > Privacy > Voice. Other televisions may use a remote-control button, a software toggle or a physical microphone switch.

Information sharing

Google Assistant Help says Google and the device manufacturer need permission to share information so Assistant and the device’s voice services can work. Read both permissions: one may cover sending speech to a manufacturer for transcription, while another covers the assistant’s account, personalization or activity history.

Practical voice checklist

  • Disable hands-free wake-word detection if you do not use it.
  • Turn off microphone permission for voice services you never use.
  • Use the physical mute switch or button when the TV provides one; the FTC recommends checking how recordings are handled and using a hardware control where available.
  • Review voice activity and deletion controls in any linked assistant account.
  • Remember that pressing a voice button can activate speech recognition even when hands-free wake words are disabled.

Optional agreements and basic TV use

Setup screens often combine essential operation with optional, data-driven services. Read each agreement instead of treating “accept all” as the only route. The consequences are market-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG says that, depending on the market, essential functions such as streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices and software updates can remain available without optional data-driven services. That does not establish the same outcome for every LG model, and it is not a guarantee for Samsung, Roku or another platform. Look for language that identifies which consent is required for account creation, app installation, recommendations, advertising or voice features.

Record your choices

Take a photograph of the consent screen or write down which optional services you accepted. If a later feature appears to require a new agreement, you can identify what changed instead of accepting an unrelated bundle. Keep the TV’s privacy page bookmarked on a computer or phone so you can check for policy and menu changes after major firmware updates.

New-TV privacy setup: a complete sequence

  1. Prepare the network. If your router supports a guest or IoT network, place the TV there to limit direct access to computers, storage and other home devices. This is a network-design choice; there is no single TV menu path that creates isolation.
  2. Read setup choices. Decline optional advertising, recommendation, voice or data-sharing services unless you need them. Note any service that the screen says is required.
  3. Disable ACR. Find Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, ACR or the equivalent viewing-information control. On Roku TV, use Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and turn off Use info from TV inputs where available.
  4. Review advertising. Open interest-based, personalized-ad or advertising-identifier controls separately. Turn off personalization if you do not want a viewing profile used for ad selection.
  5. Lock down voice. Disable wake words, microphone access and assistant information sharing you do not need. Confirm whether the remote has a voice button and whether the TV has a physical mute control.
  6. Audit apps. Remove unused apps, deny permissions that are not necessary for an app’s function and avoid signing into services you will not use.
  7. Update software. Install current TV firmware and companion-phone apps. The FTC recommends keeping internet-connected-device apps current because updates can fix security and privacy problems.
  8. Verify after updates. Recheck ACR, advertising, voice and account settings after a factory reset, major firmware change or change of region.

Using a separate streaming player

A separate player can simplify the display’s role: leave the TV offline and connect the player to the network, or use the TV only as an HDMI monitor. This changes the architecture, not the privacy obligation.

The player has its own account, advertising, viewing and voice controls. Roku’s documentation, for example, describes Smart TV Experience/ACR, advertising settings and microphone controls for its platform. If you use a Roku player with a television from another manufacturer, configure the player’s privacy menu as carefully as the TV’s menu. Also check HDMI-CEC, remote voice buttons and any companion-phone permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a separate player helps

  • You want the display to remain offline and do not need its built-in apps.
  • The player’s privacy controls are clearer or easier to revisit than the TV’s controls.
  • You want to replace the streaming software without replacing a functioning panel.

When it does not solve the problem

  • You leave the TV connected and its smart platform enabled.
  • You accept the player’s ACR or personalized-ad settings without reviewing them.
  • You use voice search on the player and assume the television’s microphone policy covers it.

  • Use a guest or IoT network when your router offers one, especially if the television does not need to reach local computers or storage.
  • Use a unique account password and multi-factor authentication where the platform supports it.
  • Do not install an app solely to unlock a one-time feature; remove it when finished.
  • Limit phone-app permissions such as contacts, location and nearby-device access unless the feature genuinely needs them.
  • Disable remote-control or casting functions you do not use, particularly on a network shared with visitors.
  • Install firmware and app updates from the TV’s normal update mechanism rather than unofficial files.

These measures do not turn a connected TV into an anonymous device. They reduce unnecessary access and make it easier to notice a setting that has changed.

Troubleshooting privacy settings

The ACR switch is missing

Search the settings for the alternate terms listed above, check whether the TV is in a retail-demo mode, and confirm the country and model number. A firmware update can rename or relocate a control. If the current model documentation does not describe an opt-out, ask the manufacturer which viewing-information choice applies before connecting the TV to your home network.

The setting keeps turning back on

Check whether a factory reset, profile change or new service agreement restored defaults. Reapply the choice after the TV finishes its update, then record the date and firmware version. If an account policy controls the setting, review the account’s privacy dashboard as well as the TV menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps stop working after declining agreements

Read the agreement’s wording: an app may require an account or a specific service while basic live TV and HDMI functions remain available. Do not re-enable every optional service blindly; enable only the agreement needed for the function you want, then revisit ACR and advertising controls.

Voice search still activates

Look for multiple voice paths: a TV microphone, a remote-control microphone and a streaming-player microphone can be independent. Disable each unused path, including the player, and test with the TV’s physical mute control if it has one.

A buyer’s privacy decision framework

  1. Identify your usage. If you mainly use HDMI devices and do not need built-in apps, an offline display plus a separately configured player may reduce the number of services you must manage.
  2. Check control clarity. Prefer a model whose setup screens name ACR or viewing information plainly and expose it separately from advertising.
  3. Check voice hardware. Look for a physical microphone mute or a remote that does not require a permanently enabled wake word.
  4. Check consent scope. Confirm which functions remain when optional data-driven agreements are declined in your market.
  5. Check maintenance. Verify that the manufacturer supplies current privacy documentation and firmware for the exact model and region.
  6. Plan for every device. A player, soundbar with a voice assistant or phone app can introduce additional accounts and microphones.

No official source provides a reliable cross-brand percentage for ACR adoption or a comparable amount of data collected. Do not choose a television based on an invented privacy score. Choose the model whose controls you can understand, change and verify.

What to ask before purchase

  • What is the exact name and menu location of the ACR or viewing-information switch on this model?
  • Can viewing collection be disabled independently from personalized advertising?
  • Which live-TV, HDMI, update and streaming functions work without optional data-sharing agreements in my country?
  • Does the TV have a physical microphone mute, and what activates voice recognition?
  • Are voice recordings transcribed by the manufacturer, an assistant provider, or both?
  • Can the TV operate with built-in smart services disabled or with the network disconnected?
  • Will a factory reset or region change restore opt-in settings?
