The Smart Switch app on Samsung phones moves supported data from Android phones, iPhones, iPads, computers, and some external storage to a compatible Galaxy device. Smart Switch can transfer contacts, messages, photos, videos, files, apps, and selected settings, but it is not a perfect device clone or a universal cloud backup.
That distinction matters. Smart Switch is excellent for a normal Galaxy upgrade, but account sessions, authenticator registrations, protected app data, DRM-restricted media, eSIM settings, and some cloud-only information may require separate recovery. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one.
Key takeaways
- Smart Switch transfers supported data to compatible Galaxy phones and tablets from Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac, microSD cards, and some USB storage devices.
- Wireless transfer is the simplest choice for most working phones, while a cable is usually the better fallback for large transfers or failed wireless discovery.
- Smart Switch does not guarantee a complete clone: some app databases, account sessions, authenticators, DRM-protected media, eSIM settings, and secure environments need separate attention.
- Samsung’s documented computer requirements include Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.9 or later, Android 4.3 or later for general transfers, and Android 7.0 or later for encrypted-data transfers.
- Do not sell, reset, or trade in the old phone until contacts, messages, photos, files, authentication, banking access, and cellular service work on the new Galaxy.
What is the Smart Switch app on Samsung phones?
The Smart Switch app on Samsung phones is Samsung’s data-migration and local backup utility. Smart Switch can move selected personal content to a Galaxy device, back up a Galaxy phone to Windows or Mac, and restore a computer backup to a Galaxy phone. Samsung documents wireless, cable, computer, microSD, and supported USB-storage workflows, although exact support depends on the devices involved.
Samsung describes Smart Switch as a way to transfer supported content rather than as an image-level clone. The current Samsung Smart Switch support guide explains that available methods and content vary by device, source platform, and hardware.

Smart Switch is not a continuously synchronized cloud backup. A phone-to-phone transfer is a migration event, and a computer backup is a local backup file. Google, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Photos, and app-specific backup systems may still be needed for ongoing synchronization or disaster recovery.
Where can you find Smart Switch on a Samsung phone?
You can usually find Smart Switch by searching the Galaxy phone’s Settings app:
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field.
- Search for Smart Switch.
- Open Bring data from old device, or open the Smart Switch result shown by your phone.
Samsung also places Smart Switch in the Samsung folder on some Galaxy phones. Menu names vary between Galaxy models, One UI versions, regions, and Smart Switch releases. You may see Send data, Send from this phone, Receive data, or Receive on this phone instead of the exact labels above. The intent is the same: the old phone sends, and the new Galaxy receives. Samsung’s mobile Smart Switch instructions show these alternate labels.
If Smart Switch is missing, use Samsung’s official Smart Switch download page or an authorized app store. Avoid unofficial APK sites, which can provide modified or unsafe installers.
Is Smart Switch right for your transfer?
Smart Switch is usually the right first tool for a working phone upgrade, but the best method depends on the source device, the amount of data, and whether the old phone is reliable.
| Situation | Recommended approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Android or Galaxy phone to a new Galaxy | Smart Switch wireless or cable transfer | Some app data and account sessions still require separate sign-in or restoration. |
| iPhone to Galaxy | Smart Switch cable transfer or supported iCloud route | iPhone apps do not become identical Android apps, and Apple-specific data may need separate handling. |
| Old phone is cracked but still unlocks | Back up to a computer first, then transfer by cable if possible | The phone must generally unlock, approve permissions, and maintain a connection. |
| Old phone is completely unresponsive | Use an existing backup or professional data-recovery support | Smart Switch cannot bypass a locked, encrypted, or inaccessible device. |
| You only need photos and documents | Use cloud sync or copy files with a computer, My Files, or external storage | Ordinary file copying does not preserve messages, app databases, or phone settings. |
| You only have a Chromebook | Use phone-to-phone Smart Switch or ordinary file copying | Samsung’s Smart Switch computer workflow is not compatible with Chromebooks. |
What should you do before using Smart Switch?
Preparation prevents the most serious migration mistakes. Complete this checklist before starting:
- Charge both phones, or keep both phones connected to power when the chosen method allows it.
- Install or update Smart Switch on both phones.
- Check available storage on the new Galaxy. A transfer can fail when the destination cannot hold the selected content.
- Know the passwords for Google, Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, and other important accounts.
- Prepare recovery codes and an alternate sign-in method for two-factor authentication.
- Open authenticator, password-manager, banking, payment, work-profile, and encrypted-messaging apps on the old phone and follow each app’s migration instructions.
- Confirm access to photos and files stored only in cloud services.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and available throughout the transfer.
- Do not factory-reset, sell, trade in, or erase the old phone until post-transfer checks are complete.
For a fragile or intermittently working phone, create a computer backup before attempting a phone-to-phone migration. A second copy of irreplaceable photos, videos, documents, and recordings is worthwhile even when Smart Switch reports success.

Which Smart Switch transfer method should you choose?
Wireless is the easiest choice for most ordinary upgrades, cable is the practical fallback for large or unreliable transfers, and a Windows or Mac backup is the safest first step when the old phone may stop working.
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless phone-to-phone | Working phones and ordinary upgrades | No computer, cable, or adapter required; phones can remain near chargers. | Pairing can fail, interference can affect reliability, and large libraries may take time. |
| USB cable | Large transfers or failed wireless setup | Direct connection and often more dependable for substantial data. | Requires a data-capable cable and sometimes a USB-OTG adapter; charging options may be limited during transfer. |
| Windows or Mac | A recoverable backup before migration, reset, repair, or trade-in | Creates a local backup that can be restored later. | Requires supported desktop software, a compatible operating system, cable, and enough computer storage. |
| microSD card | Supported Galaxy devices with removable storage | Offline intermediary for supported workflows and files. | Many Galaxy phones and tablets do not include a microSD slot. |
| USB flash drive or external storage | Large media libraries without a computer | Portable local copy using compatible USB-OTG hardware. | Usually better for files than for app state, messages, settings, or account configuration. |
Samsung’s mobile guide presents wireless transfer as a preferred option in its described workflow because both phones can remain connected to chargers. Samsung also recommends trying a cable when wireless transfer problems continue. Transfer speed depends on the devices, connection conditions, data volume, and selected categories; neither wireless nor cable should be described as universally fastest.
How do you transfer Android data wirelessly to a Galaxy phone?
Use the following sequence for an Android-to-Galaxy wireless transfer. The labels may differ slightly on your phones, but the old device sends and the new Galaxy receives.
- Keep both phones close together and connect them to power if possible. Samsung’s mobile instructions specify approximately within 4 inches during wireless setup; proximity behavior can vary by model.
- Open Smart Switch on both phones.
- On the old phone, tap Send data or Send from this phone.
- Choose Wireless.
- On the new Galaxy, tap Receive data or Receive on this phone.
- Choose Galaxy/Android as the source type, then choose Wireless.
- Approve the connection and any permission requests on the old phone.
- Review the categories Smart Switch finds.
- Choose Everything, a category group, or Custom, depending on the interface.
- Start the transfer and leave both phones undisturbed until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Open important content on the new Galaxy and complete the verification checklist below.
Samsung’s published Android-to-Galaxy mobile sequence uses Send data → Wireless on the old phone and Receive data → Galaxy/Android → Wireless on the new Galaxy.

- Connect the phones with a compatible USB cable.
- Use a USB-OTG adapter if the connectors do not match.
- Open Smart Switch on both phones.
- On the old phone, choose Send data, then Cable.
- On the new Galaxy, choose Receive data, select the source type, and choose Cable.
- Approve the connection and requested permissions.
- Select the categories to transfer.
- Start the transfer and keep the cable connected until Smart Switch confirms completion.
Samsung says an OTG transfer should begin with the devices at least 20% charged, while also recommending fully charged devices because transfers can take time. Samsung’s cable-transfer guidance also notes that the appropriate cable and adapter depend on the phones involved.
A cable can be more reliable, but the phones may not be able to remain connected to chargers during the transfer. If the cable is loose, damaged, charge-only, or connected through an incompatible adapter, try another data cable or switch to wireless.
How do you transfer data from an iPhone to a Galaxy?
Smart Switch can move supported iPhone information to a Galaxy by cable or, in supported workflows, by retrieving data from iCloud. The process does not reproduce the iOS environment: iPhone apps do not simply become identical Android apps, and Apple-specific data may need separate export or app-level migration.

Using an iPhone cable
- Connect the iPhone and Galaxy with a compatible cable or the required adapter.
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy.
- Choose Receive data, select iPhone/iPad, and choose the cable option.
- Unlock the iPhone and approve any trust or connection prompt.
- Review the supported categories Smart Switch detects.
- Select the content to move and start the transfer.
- Check messages, contacts, photos, videos, notes, call history, documents, bookmarks, voice memos, Wi-Fi settings, and alarms where applicable.
Samsung lists these types of iPhone content as transferable in supported cable scenarios, but device, format, and software limitations apply. The Samsung content-compatibility guide provides the relevant qualifications.
Using iCloud or a wireless-supported route
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy and select the iPhone or iPad source.
- Choose the supported iCloud or wireless route shown by the app.
- Sign in with the Apple ID credentials requested by Smart Switch.
- Approve access on a trusted Apple device or phone number if Apple requests verification.
- Enter the verification code.
- Select the available data categories and begin the transfer.
This route requires access to the Apple ID, the verification code or trusted-device approval, a stable connection, and enough storage on the Galaxy. If iCloud verification is unavailable, a direct cable route may be more practical.
What are the important iPhone-to-Galaxy limitations?
- iPhone apps do not transfer as identical Android applications. The Galaxy may suggest Android equivalents, but each app may require a fresh download and sign-in.
- DRM-protected music and video cannot be treated as ordinary transferable files. Samsung specifically distinguishes eligible DRM-free or otherwise supported media from restricted content.
- iTunes media and iCloud content are not universally transferable merely because they are visible in an Apple account.
- Apple-specific data structures may require Apple’s export tools or the individual app’s migration process.
- Anyone moving from iMessage should deregister the phone number from iMessage before relying exclusively on the Galaxy for text messages.
What data can Smart Switch transfer?
Smart Switch can transfer a substantial amount of personal content, but the exact list is determined by the source, destination, app, file type, permissions, encryption, and device model.
| Data category | Typical Smart Switch support | What to verify separately |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts and calendars | Commonly transferable from supported phone sources. | Check account-based contacts, duplicate entries, calendar accounts, and recent entries. |
| Messages and call history | Often transferable, especially in supported Android and Galaxy workflows. | Check recent conversations, multimedia messages, spam folders, and the default messaging app. |
| Photos, videos, documents, music | Supported local files can usually be moved when formats and permissions allow. | Check cloud-only files, duplicates, unsupported formats, and DRM restrictions. |
| Apps | Apps may be reinstalled or transferred where supported. | App installation is not the same as restoring private databases, sessions, downloads, or licenses. |
| App data | Some app data may transfer, particularly between Galaxy devices. | Banking, password-manager, authenticator, work-profile, encrypted-messaging, and protected apps may require independent reactivation. |
| Settings and layout | Selected alarms, wallpapers, lock-screen content, preferences, home-screen items, and Galaxy settings may transfer. | Review permissions, notification behavior, biometrics, Bluetooth pairings, eSIM, carrier settings, and Secure Folder content. |
Samsung’s Smart Switch transfer-content documentation explicitly warns that supported items vary, some content is limited to Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers, and some files or app data cannot be backed up or restored.

What does Smart Switch not transfer reliably?
The most useful way to think about Smart Switch is “supported data,” not “everything on the old phone.” Treat the following as separate verification or migration tasks:
- Private databases belonging to apps that block backup or use their own encrypted migration system.
- Account sessions, passwords, payment credentials, and device-trust registrations.
- Authenticator registrations and two-factor authentication tokens.
- Banking, enterprise, work-profile, password-manager, and secure-messaging app access.
- DRM-protected music, video, books, or other licensed media.
- Cloud-only photos, files, notes, or documents that are not stored locally.
- Unsupported file formats or corrupted files.
- eSIM profiles, SIM information, carrier configuration, and network activation unless the specific device and carrier support the process.
- Secure Folder and other protected environments whose contents or credentials have device-specific restrictions.
- Bluetooth accessories, watches, vehicles, and other pairings that may need to be connected again.
These are practical cautions rather than a universal claim that every item always fails. The result depends on the app, source phone, Galaxy model, software version, region, and security policy.
How do you back up a Galaxy phone to Windows or Mac?
A computer backup is the best Smart Switch option when the old phone is fragile, about to be reset, or may not remain available during setup. Samsung’s documented desktop requirements include Android 4.3 or later for general transfers, Android 7.0 or later for encrypted-data transfers, macOS 10.9 or later, and Windows 10 or later. Samsung lists iOS 5 or later for cable transfers and iOS 12 or later for Wi-Fi transfers.
Samsung’s published Smart Switch computer requirements also state that Chromebooks are not compatible with the Smart Switch computer workflow. Those requirements are documentation-based and can change with future releases.

- Install Smart Switch on the Windows PC or Mac and on the Galaxy phone if prompted.
- Connect the phone to the computer by USB.
- Tap Allow on the phone if permission is requested.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer.
- Choose Backup.
- Select all categories or customize the selection.
- Start the backup and wait for the completion confirmation.
- Keep the backup until the new Galaxy has been verified.
Computer backups can use substantial storage, and Samsung says Smart Switch does not automatically delete old backup files. Check available disk space before starting and manage older backups deliberately.
How do you restore a Smart Switch computer backup?
Restore a Smart Switch backup by connecting the Galaxy to the computer, opening Smart Switch, selecting the backup, and choosing the data to restore.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the Windows PC or Mac.
- Open Smart Switch.
- Select Restore.
- Choose the backup, or select specific backup data.
- Select Restore now.
- Wait for Smart Switch to report completion.
- Open key apps and files on the phone to verify the result.
Samsung documents different default backup locations depending on the Windows version and Smart Switch release. Examples include C:Users[username]DocumentsSamsungSmartSwitch for Windows 10, C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingSamsungSmartSwitchPCtoPC for Windows 11, and /Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup on Mac. Because paths can differ between guides and releases, use Smart Switch’s own backup-management interface whenever possible.
Can Smart Switch use a microSD card or USB flash drive?
Smart Switch can use microSD cards and USB storage in supported device configurations, but external storage is not a universal replacement for a computer backup. Not every Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD slot, and USB storage requires compatible USB-OTG hardware.
External storage is most useful for moving large photos, videos, music, and documents. A normal file copy through Samsung’s My Files app may be simpler when the goal is only to move files. File copying does not preserve app databases, message history, settings, account configuration, or authentication state.
Samsung’s external-storage Smart Switch guidance confirms that hardware support varies by Galaxy model. Check the specifications for the exact phone before buying a microSD card or OTG accessory.
How do you verify a completed Smart Switch transfer?
A “transfer complete” message confirms that Smart Switch finished its selected operation, not that every important account and file is ready. Run this audit before wiping the old phone:
- Compare the contacts and calendar entries, including contacts stored in separate accounts.
- Open recent text-message conversations and check call history.
- Open recent camera photos and videos, older albums, screenshots, downloads, and documents.
- Check notes, voice recordings, alarms, and browser bookmarks.
- Sign in to the password manager and confirm that the required vault is available.
- Test authenticator codes and two-factor recovery methods before logging out of the old phone.
- Open banking, payment, work, health, and other high-value apps and complete reactivation.
- Reconnect watches, earbuds, vehicles, printers, and other Bluetooth accessories.
- Check cellular service, the physical SIM, and eSIM activation with the carrier where applicable.
- Confirm that cloud services have synchronized the expected files and photos.
Keep the old phone powered on and protected until the audit passes. If a category was intentionally omitted because of storage limits, record that decision and copy the missing files separately.

Smart Switch cannot find the old phone
- Confirm that Smart Switch is installed and updated on both devices.
- Restart both phones.
- Keep wireless phones close together.
- Approve requested permissions and connection prompts.
- Temporarily remove battery-saving restrictions that may stop Smart Switch in the background.
- Try a compatible USB data cable instead of wireless.
- If using a computer, reinstall Smart Switch and confirm the operating-system requirements.
Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance recommends checking compatibility, reinstalling the software, and switching to USB when wireless transfer does not work.
The transfer stops midway
An interrupted transfer commonly points to insufficient destination storage, low battery, a loose or charge-only cable, an incompatible adapter, screen-lock behavior, unsupported or corrupted files, denied permissions, or computer security software interfering with the connection.
- Restart both devices and retry.
- Free space on the new Galaxy.
- Transfer smaller groups, beginning with contacts, messages, and photos.
- Exclude the category that consistently causes the failure.
- Copy irreplaceable media separately to a computer or cloud service.
- Switch between wireless and cable.
- Keep the old phone until the new phone has been checked.
Apps transferred but their data is missing
An installed app is not necessarily a restored app database. Sign in again, use the app’s own cloud backup, re-register two-factor authentication, re-download offline content, and re-pair accessories as required. Banking, password-manager, authenticator, work-profile, and encrypted-messaging apps commonly deserve special attention.

The iPhone verification step fails
iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers may require the Apple ID password, a trusted Apple device or phone number, and a verification code. If iCloud approval is unavailable, use a direct cable route where supported, or export the affected Apple data through Apple’s own services or the relevant app.
The new Galaxy does not have enough storage
Reduce the selection before beginning. Exclude duplicate videos, old downloads, and files already safely stored in Google Photos, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox, or another service. Move large media separately and retain the old phone until the intentionally omitted data is accounted for.
What should you use instead of Smart Switch?
Smart Switch works best as one layer in a migration plan. Use another service when the requirement is continuous synchronization, app-specific restoration, or simple file copying.
Recommended Free Tools
| Need | Better complement or alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing Android backup and restoration | Google account backup and Google Photos | Useful for cloud-based recovery and continuing photo synchronization. |
| Apple account data | iCloud and Apple export tools | Useful when Apple-specific data is not exposed through Smart Switch. |
| Cross-platform file synchronization | OneDrive or Dropbox | Useful for files that need to remain available across devices. |
| Only photos, videos, or documents | Manual USB copy, My Files, or external storage | Faster and simpler when messages, apps, and settings are irrelevant. |
| Protected app content | The app’s own backup, export, or device-to-device migration | The app owner controls access to private databases and credentials. |
| Data on a severely damaged phone | Existing backup or professional recovery service | Migration software cannot unlock or repair every inaccessible device. |
Cloud services can provide an off-device copy, but they generally do not replace Smart Switch for Galaxy-specific settings, message history, or device configuration. Current storage plans and prices vary and should be checked directly with the provider.
Which accessories can make a transfer easier?
A compatible USB-C data cable is the most useful accessory for a difficult or large migration. A USB-OTG adapter helps when phone connectors do not match or when the Galaxy must connect to external storage. A USB flash drive or external SSD can provide a separate local copy of large media libraries. A microSD card is useful only when the source or destination Galaxy supports removable storage.
Choose a cable that explicitly supports data transfer, the correct connector types, and the required OTG arrangement. For external storage, check capacity, connector compatibility, sustained write performance, and security features when sensitive files are involved. Samsung’s official phone-accessories page, mobile-accessories page, and memory-storage catalog are appropriate starting points for checking compatibility; accessory prices and stock change over time.
What is the safest Smart Switch strategy?
For a normal upgrade, use Smart Switch to migrate supported data, make a separate cloud or computer copy of irreplaceable content, verify critical accounts and files, and retain the old phone until the new Galaxy works normally. That layered approach is safer than treating a single “transfer complete” message as proof that every part of the old phone has been cloned.

Does Smart Switch transfer everything from an old phone?
No. Smart Switch transfers supported categories, not every item on the old phone. App-private data, account sessions, authentication credentials, DRM-protected media, cloud-only content, eSIM settings, and protected environments may require separate migration or reactivation.
Is Smart Switch a cloud backup service?
No. Smart Switch is primarily a phone-migration tool and a local Windows or Mac backup utility. Smart Switch does not provide a continuously synchronized cloud copy, so Google, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox, or an app-specific backup may still be necessary.
Should I use Smart Switch wirelessly or with a cable?
Use wireless transfer when both phones work normally and convenience matters. Use a cable for large transfers or failed wireless discovery, and create a computer backup first when the old phone is damaged or may not remain available.
Can Smart Switch move data from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy?
Yes, Smart Switch can transfer supported iPhone data by cable and, in supported workflows, from iCloud. iPhone apps do not become identical Android apps, and DRM-protected media, Apple-specific data, iMessage registration, and app logins need separate attention.
Can I use Smart Switch with a Chromebook?
Samsung’s documented Smart Switch computer workflow is not compatible with Chromebooks. A Chromebook may still be useful for ordinary file copying or cloud services, while phone-to-phone Smart Switch can be performed without desktop software.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Smart Switch is the best first choice for moving supported data to a new Galaxy, especially during an ordinary Android or Galaxy upgrade. Use wireless for convenience, cable for a more direct connection, and Windows or Mac for a recoverable backup. Smart Switch is not a perfect clone, so independently migrate authenticators, banking and password apps, protected data, cloud content, eSIM or carrier service, and anything the post-transfer audit cannot confirm.
