The best smart lock is the one that fits your door, preserves a dependable way in, and connects to the devices you actually use. Start by measuring the door and identifying the existing lock, then choose between an interior retrofit and a complete replacement. Only after that should you weigh PINs, phone access, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Matter, battery life, and security grades. A retrofit such as the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock works only with certain single-cylinder deadbolts. Full-replacement models such as Yale Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) and Schlage Arrive provide new exterior hardware, but each has different network and backup-entry requirements. This guide gives you a measurement checklist, a connectivity decision framework, model-by-model comparison, installation steps, and recovery plans for dead batteries or a binding door.

How do I know whether a smart lock will fit my door?

Confirm the door’s preparation and the exact lock model before buying. “Standard deadbolt” is not a sufficient specification: one-hole and two-hole doors, mortise cases, interconnected locksets, unusual cylinders, and different backsets require different hardware.

Identify the existing lock arrangement

  • One-hole doors: A lever-style product is generally the appropriate family in Yale’s compatibility guidance.
  • Two-hole doors: Several deadbolt families may fit, but the replacement must match the exterior hardware and the measured dimensions.
  • Mortise-prepped doors: These are not compatible with the Yale products covered by its guidance. A mortise lock uses a different case and edge preparation than a residential cylindrical deadbolt.
  • Interconnected locksets: The deadbolt and lower latch operate as one mechanical assembly. Yale says these require replacement with a new deadbolt and matching mechanical hardware rather than a simple interior swap.

Measure before comparing features

Record the following measurements with the old hardware installed, then check them against the installation guide for the exact model:

  1. Door thickness. Yale’s 2026 specifications for Assure Lock 2 models cover 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches.
  2. Face bore. This is the large hole through the door face. The same Yale specifications list a 2-1/8-inch face bore.
  3. Edge bore. This is the hole in the narrow door edge through which the latch or bolt extends. Yale lists a 1-inch edge bore.
  4. Backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the face bore. Yale lists 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches for the referenced Assure Lock 2 models.
  5. Lock type and cylinder. Note whether the door has a single-cylinder deadbolt, double-cylinder deadbolt, mortise lock, interconnected lockset, or a high-security or single-sided design.

These dimensions describe one product family, not a universal standard. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker and installation manual for the model and region you intend to buy. August’s compatibility document illustrates why: its retrofit locks support compatible single-cylinder deadbolts but exclude mortise locks, double-cylinder deadbolts, and certain high-security or single-sided designs.

Check the door’s condition, not just its dimensions

A bolt that rubs the strike plate can make a compatible smart lock appear defective. With the door closed, turn the existing thumb-turn or key. It should move smoothly without lifting, pushing, or pulling the door. Correct a misaligned strike, loose hinges, or a swollen frame before installing a motorized lock; extra resistance increases motor load and can shorten battery life.

Should I buy a retrofit or replace the whole deadbolt?

Choose a retrofit when preserving the exterior cylinder and existing keys matters and your deadbolt is on the compatibility list. Choose a full replacement when you want a known hardware platform, exterior keypad or cylinder, and a fresh mechanical assembly.

What a retrofit changes

An interior retrofit replaces or drives the inside mechanism while leaving the outside cylinder and escutcheon in place. That can be attractive for renters, historic doors, or owners who want family members to continue using existing keys. The trade-off is that the smart motor inherits the old deadbolt’s wear, alignment, cylinder design, and dimensional limits. If the outside lock is excluded by the compatibility document, no software feature can make the retrofit fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a full replacement changes

A complete replacement supplies a new exterior keypad, cylinder, or both, together with a matching latch and interior mechanism. Installation is more involved and existing keys normally stop working, but you gain a defined hardware platform and can replace a worn or poorly aligned deadbolt at the same time. Full replacement is also the required path for door types such as the interconnected arrangement described in Yale’s guidance.

Decision checklist

  • Renting or cannot alter exterior hardware: investigate a listed retrofit first.
  • Want keypad entry on the outside: compare full replacements that include the required exterior hardware.
  • Existing lock is stiff, damaged, or an unusual high-security design: budget for a full replacement or a locksmith assessment.
  • Need to retain multiple existing keys: confirm that the retrofit preserves the cylinder and that the manufacturer supports your exact deadbolt.

Which entry methods should a smart lock provide?

Entry methods are independent of networking. A lock can offer a local phone connection without remote access, or a keypad that works even when the internet is unavailable. Select at least one method that remains usable when your phone, cloud service, or batteries are unavailable.

Mechanical key

A keyed cylinder is the simplest offline fallback. Yale states that the YRD510 can be unlocked with its mechanical key when the batteries die. If you choose a keyless exterior, verify the manufacturer’s emergency-power procedure and keep that information accessible to household members.

PIN or touchscreen code

A keypad allows entry without carrying a key or phone and is useful for children, guests, and service workers. Check how many codes the exact model stores, whether temporary codes require an internet connection, and whether the keypad remains usable during a hub or cloud outage. Those capacities vary by model and are not established for every lock in this guide.

Phone, fingerprint, and NFC

Phone unlocking may use Bluetooth when you are near the door or a network connection when you are away. Fingerprint readers and NFC credentials can be convenient, but they add hardware and management requirements. Confirm that the exact edition supports the credential type you need; do not infer it from a product family name or a mobile-app feature list.

Guest access and audit records

For rentals or frequent visitors, look for scheduled codes, user-specific permissions, and an event history. Ask whether records are stored locally or in a cloud account, how they are exported, and what happens to access when the subscription or account is closed.

Do I need Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Matter, Thread, or a hub?

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Thread, Matter, and hubs solve different problems. Bluetooth is mainly a nearby connection; Wi-Fi can provide direct remote control but usually consumes more battery; a hub handles network duties for the lock; and Matter is an interoperability standard that may run over Thread rather than Wi-Fi.

Bluetooth-only operation

Bluetooth is well suited to local unlocking and setup when your phone is near the door. It normally cannot provide direct away-from-home control by itself. A Bluetooth lock may still work during an internet outage for local users, provided the batteries and mechanical parts are healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi operation

Wi-Fi can let you check status or operate the lock remotely without a separate hub. The radio is active more often than in a purely local design, so battery demand is generally higher. Signal strength, router placement, temperature, firmware, and the number of daily cycles all affect the result.

Hub-connected designs

A hub places the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection elsewhere and communicates with the lock over a lower-power protocol. This can improve home-automation integrations and keep the lock’s radio workload lower, but it adds another device that must remain powered, updated, and within range.

What Matter changes

Matter can make a compatible lock easier to use across supported smart-home ecosystems, but it does not automatically provide every feature on every platform. Yale says its Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) can connect through Matter to Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings. Yale also specifies a compatible Matter-over-Thread border router and a compatible phone for remote operation.

How should I compare smart-lock security grades?

Compare the exact lock body’s published ANSI/BHMA grade; an app, keypad, or biometric reader does not replace the mechanical rating. Vivint’s 2026 explanation describes Grade 1 as the highest residential/commercial level, Grade 2 as intermediate, and Grade 3 as the lowest of the common residential grades.

Read the certification precisely

Yale documents the YRD510 as ANSI/BHMA Grade 2. Schlage publishes Arrive with ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 1 and Residential Grade AAA certifications. These labels are not interchangeable: “Commercial Grade 1” and “Residential Grade AAA” refer to different classification language, so retain the wording used by the manufacturer.

Look beyond the grade

  • Inspect the strike, long screws, and frame reinforcement; a strong lock body cannot compensate for a weak jamb.
  • Confirm whether the exterior has a keyed cylinder, keypad, or another method and what happens during a power or network outage.
  • Check tamper alerts, failed-code lockout behavior, and whether firmware updates require an active account.
  • For apartments or shared buildings, confirm that the lock does not conflict with fire egress rules, landlord requirements, or a building-wide master-key system.

What happens if the smart lock battery dies?

Buy only a model with a documented fallback and practice it before you need it. Yale says the YRD510 provides low-battery warnings and accepts its mechanical key when the batteries are exhausted. Schlage Arrive uses four AA alkaline batteries and publishes up to six months of battery life; Schlage identifies that figure as an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Plan the normal battery routine

  1. Enable every low-battery notification in the lock app and, if offered, email or push alerts.
  2. Use the battery type specified by the manufacturer. For Arrive, that is four AA alkaline cells.
  3. Replace batteries on a schedule based on alerts and actual usage rather than waiting for the motor to stop.
  4. Keep the replacement set in a known, dry location and record the installation date.

Published life depends on traffic, signal conditions, temperature, firmware, and door resistance. Schlage’s “up to six months” is therefore a planning estimate, not a service-level promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an emergency path outside the app

For a keyed model, carry a physical key or place a spare in a secure location that is not inside the locked home. For a keyless model, verify the emergency-power contacts and the required battery or power bank before installation. A remote-unlock feature is not an emergency plan if the lock has no power or the network is down.

Separate battery faults from alignment faults

If batteries drain unusually quickly, test the lock with the door open. A smooth cycle with the door open but a stalled or noisy cycle when closed points to strike or frame alignment. Fix that mechanical resistance before buying more batteries or blaming the wireless connection.

Which smart-lock models are worth comparing?

The following products represent three different buying paths. Verify the exact regional edition and current installation requirements before ordering.

Model Install style and fit Entry and connectivity Published security Power and backup Remote-access requirement
Yale Smart Lock with Matter (YRD510) Full replacement; confirm the door dimensions and preparation against Yale’s model checker. Matter ecosystem support; Matter may use Thread. ANSI/BHMA Grade 2. Low-battery warnings; mechanical-key backup. Compatible Matter-over-Thread border router and compatible phone are required for remote operation.
Schlage Arrive Full replacement; verify the supplied latch and exterior hardware against your door. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; remote access can work without a hub after local pairing. ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Commercial Grade 1 and Residential Grade AAA. Four AA alkaline batteries; up to six months published battery life. Schlage says it must be paired on location to achieve a remote connection.
August Wi-Fi Smart Lock retrofit Interior retrofit for compatible single-cylinder deadbolts; excludes the mortise, double-cylinder, and certain high-security or single-sided configurations listed by August. Wi-Fi retrofit path; confirm the exact phone and remote features for your edition. Not stated in the cited compatibility material; check the exact model’s certification. Not stated in the cited compatibility material; follow the model’s battery specification and alerts. Verify network and account requirements in the model documentation.

How to choose among these paths

  • Choose the Yale path when Matter interoperability and a mechanical key are priorities and you already have, or plan to install, a compatible Thread border router.
  • Choose Schlage Arrive when a full replacement, published high-grade certifications, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, and no-hub remote access after local pairing match your setup.
  • Choose the August retrofit path when preserving the existing exterior and keys is more important than replacing the lock body, and your single-cylinder deadbolt passes the compatibility check.

How do I install and commission a smart lock safely?

Installation is only complete when the bolt moves freely, the app is configured, and the backup entry method has been tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Photograph and measure the existing hardware. Record door thickness, bores, backset, lock type, and the direction the bolt travels.
  2. Run the manufacturer’s compatibility checker. Do this before removing the old lock. Save the model-specific installation guide.
  3. Correct alignment. Tighten hinges, center the strike, and ensure the bolt enters without pressure from the door.
  4. Install the mechanical parts first. Keep screws snug but do not deform the door or latch housing.
  5. Install batteries and complete calibration. Follow the exact app sequence; calibration with the door open prevents an accidental lockout.
  6. Pair locally before enabling remote access. This is explicitly required for Schlage Arrive’s remote connection and is also the practical way to verify Bluetooth or Thread setup.
  7. Create access credentials. Add a primary code or phone, then a separate guest credential if supported. Avoid sharing one permanent code with everyone.
  8. Test every fallback. Lock and unlock with the app, keypad or credential, and mechanical key or emergency-power method. Test with the door closed only after the open-door tests succeed.
  9. Document recovery. Store the key, battery type, reset procedure, account recovery method, and support contact somewhere accessible to the household.

What common problems should I troubleshoot first?

The lock will not fit

Recheck door thickness, face bore, edge bore, backset, and cylinder type. Mortise, double-cylinder, interconnected, and certain high-security or single-sided designs often require a different product family or a full hardware change.

The motor runs but the bolt stops

Open the door and retry. If the mechanism works open but binds closed, align the strike and check hinge sag. Do not repeatedly force calibration against a resistant frame.

Remote control is unavailable

Confirm that the lock is paired locally, the required hub or Matter-over-Thread border router is online, and the phone and controller are supported. A Matter label alone does not guarantee remote access, and Bluetooth alone is normally local.

Battery warnings arrive too soon

Check for a rubbing bolt, weak wireless signal, extreme temperatures, excessive daily cycles, and outdated firmware. Replace cells with the specified type and compare real usage with the manufacturer’s estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A guest cannot unlock the door

Confirm that the credential is active, has not expired, and is assigned to the correct lock and user. Test whether the lock requires internet access to create or validate that credential, then provide a mechanical-key or in-person fallback.

FAQ

Can I install a smart lock on an apartment door?

Only if the door and lease rules permit the change. A retrofit may preserve the exterior hardware, but you still need written compatibility for the existing deadbolt and should confirm that emergency egress and building access requirements are unaffected.

Will a Matter lock work without Wi-Fi?

Matter is not synonymous with Wi-Fi. A compatible lock may communicate over Thread, but Thread-based remote operation requires a compatible border router and controller; local behavior depends on the model and ecosystem.

Is a higher ANSI/BHMA grade always safer?

The grade describes the tested mechanical lockset classification, not the strength of the entire door assembly or the quality of the software. A well-reinforced frame, correctly installed strike, reliable updates, and a usable backup method all affect practical security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I replace smart-lock batteries?

Use the lock’s warnings and the manufacturer’s estimate as your schedule, then adjust for traffic, temperature, signal conditions, and alignment. Replace them before the warning becomes urgent and keep a specified spare set available.

Can I keep my old keys with a full replacement?

Usually not, because a full replacement normally includes a new exterior cylinder. If retaining existing keys is essential, investigate a compatible retrofit or ask a locksmith whether the new cylinder can be rekeyed to your current key.
