Short answer: the SleepMaker Miracoil Maple was a queen-size, firm, light-spring mattress, but it is discontinued. CHOICE recorded 173 springs per square metre, 12 layers, a 31 kg weight and 30 cm thickness. Its listed price was $1,599, while a CHOICE shopper negotiated $899. That is useful historical information, but the public CHOICE page does not show the Maple’s Expert Rating or individual test scores, so its support, durability, stability, breathability and sagging performance cannot be verified from public evidence.

If you are replacing one, treat today’s Miracoil products as a starting point rather than proof of identical construction. SleepMaker now sells several feels and describes newer Miracoil systems, but those claims apply to the current range, not automatically to the discontinued Maple.

What was the SleepMaker Miracoil Maple?

The Maple was a queen mattress in SleepMaker’s Miracoil family. CHOICE classified it as firm with a light-spring feel and marked the model as discontinued. “Light-spring” describes the spring specification recorded by CHOICE; it does not mean the mattress was soft or lightly built. The published specification is 173 springs per square metre, arranged within a 12-layer mattress that was 30 cm thick and weighed 31 kg.

Those facts establish what the model was on paper, not how it performed for every sleeper. A firm rating is a useful starting point for shoppers who prefer a harder surface, but comfort also depends on body weight, sleeping position, the base underneath the mattress and the condition of an individual unit.

What are the Maple mattress specifications?

These are the Maple details publicly listed by CHOICE. They describe the queen-size model and should not be assumed to apply to every Miracoil mattress sold under a different name.

Specification Maple information
Size tested/listed Queen
Feel Firm
Spring description Light-spring
Springs 173 springs per square metre
Layers 12
Weight 31 kg
Thickness 30 cm
CHOICE-listed price $1,599
CHOICE shopper’s negotiated price $899
Availability status Discontinued

The specification does not identify the composition or thickness of each of the 12 layers. It also does not publicly establish the foam density, fabric type, edge reinforcement, zoning pattern or coil gauge. Those omissions matter when comparing the Maple with a current mattress.

How much did the Miracoil Maple cost?

CHOICE listed the Maple at $1,599 for a queen, but its shopper paid $899 after negotiating. CHOICE recorded that as a 44% reduction from the listed price. The $899 figure is a historical negotiated transaction, not a current sale price or a guaranteed value for a used Maple.

The negotiation result fits CHOICE’s wider 2017 mattress investigation: shoppers achieved an average saving of 43% across 22 queen mattresses. That average is evidence that asking prices were negotiable in that survey, not a promise that every retailer will discount a Maple or a replacement by the same percentage.

When comparing prices today, separate the mattress price from delivery, removal of an old mattress, bed-base requirements, protector costs and any return fee. A lower sticker price can be less attractive if the retailer does not provide a trial or charges for collection.

Is the SleepMaker Miracoil Maple still available?

No. CHOICE marks the Maple as discontinued. Retailers may still have old stock or a returned unit, and a second-hand example can appear online, but those possibilities do not make it a current production model.

Discontinued status creates three practical uncertainties:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Condition: a mattress that has been stored, displayed or slept on may have lost firmness or developed impressions.
  • Warranty: coverage may have expired, may be tied to the original purchaser, or may exclude a resale transaction. The Maple’s original warranty terms are not established by the public information available here.
  • Construction: a retailer using “Miracoil” in a replacement’s name may be describing a newer design, not the Maple’s exact spring unit or comfort layers.

Ask for the model label, manufacturing date, receipt, warranty document and a written statement of whether the mattress is new, ex-display, returned or used. If a seller cannot provide those details, price the mattress as an unverified discontinued product rather than as equivalent to a current model.

What did independent testing establish about the Maple?

CHOICE’s public page shows that mattresses were assessed in categories including support, stability, sagging resistance, breathability, durability and warmth. The Maple’s Expert Rating and individual results are behind CHOICE membership, so the public record does not provide numerical scores for those categories.

That means it is not responsible to call the Maple highly durable, exceptionally stable, cool sleeping or resistant to sagging based only on its 30 cm thickness, layer count or spring count. Those specifications can help identify the product, but they are not substitutes for test results.

It is also unsafe to transfer scores from another Miracoil model. Retailers often use different names for similar-looking mattresses, and CHOICE consumer Effie Matsas noted: “Each retailer has a different name for each product, so there’s a lot of confusion.” The name on a sales label should therefore be matched with the actual model code and construction before treating a review as relevant.

What does the current Miracoil range offer?

SleepMaker’s current Miracoil product page describes a broader range than the discontinued Maple. It lists super-firm, firm, medium and plush feels, along with Miracoil support, Climatex quilting, KülKōte temperature-regulation material, Australian manufacture and a 10-year warranty. These are current-range or manufacturer claims; they do not prove that the Maple used those materials or carried the same warranty.

Current-range claim from SleepMaker How to use it when comparing a replacement
Super-firm, firm, medium and plush feels Choose the feel by lying on the exact model; do not infer the Maple’s feel from a newer model’s label.
Miracoil support system Request the exact coil layout and model specification, because the Maple’s detailed construction is not publicly listed.
Climatex quilting Confirm that the material appears in the specific replacement model, not merely in range-level marketing.
KülKōte temperature regulation Ask whether the feature is included in the model and whether it changes the care instructions.
Australian manufacture Verify the manufacturing location for the exact mattress and production batch.
10-year warranty Read the model’s written warranty; SleepMaker’s New Zealand information says warranties vary by range from 3 to 10 years.

SleepMaker also says its current Miracoil design uses a three- or five-zone, Z-shaped continuous-coil design and can support two adults weighing 120 kg each. Those statements are manufacturer claims, not independent CHOICE test findings, and they should be checked against the specification sheet for the mattress you are considering.

What is the difference between the Maple and a current Miracoil replacement?

The Maple has a documented historical specification, while a current replacement should be judged by its own specification, feel and warranty. The table below separates known Maple facts from information that must be confirmed for a new model.

Comparison point Maple Current Miracoil model
Availability Discontinued Depends on the model and retailer
Feel Firm Range includes super-firm, firm, medium and plush
Spring information 173 springs per square metre; described by CHOICE as light-spring SleepMaker describes a three- or five-zone Z-shaped continuous coil design for its current system
Layers 12 Must be confirmed for the exact model
Thickness 30 cm Must be confirmed for the exact model
Weight 31 kg Must be confirmed for the exact model
Comfort materials Public specification does not identify them Some current models are promoted with Climatex quilting and KülKōte; confirm inclusion
Warranty Original Maple terms are not established publicly SleepMaker’s current page states 10 years; New Zealand information says range warranties span 3 to 10 years
Independent test scores Public CHOICE scores are not shown Check for independent results for the exact model

A replacement is therefore equivalent only if its retailer or manufacturer can document comparable firmness, support construction, height and comfort materials. The shared Miracoil name alone is not enough.

How should you choose a replacement for the Maple?

Start with the qualities you actually liked about the Maple, then verify them rather than relying on the family name.

Match the surface feel

If you slept comfortably on a firm Maple, begin with firm or super-firm models and test them for at least 10 to 15 minutes in your normal sleeping position. A showroom label is not a measurement standard, so compare several mattresses in the same store and record where your hips and shoulders sit.

Check the support unit

Ask whether the replacement uses a continuous coil, pocketed coils or another design, and ask how many zones it has. Request the specification sheet instead of accepting a generic “advanced support” description. If two adults share the bed, test it together for roll-together and edge stability; those properties cannot be inferred from the Maple’s spring count.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Compare comfort layers and height

The Maple was 30 cm thick and had 12 layers, but the public record does not identify the materials in those layers. A replacement can be the same height while feeling very different if its foams, fibre pads or quilting change. Check the total height against your fitted-sheet pocket depth and the height of your bed base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the warranty conditions

Look for the required base type, weight limits, rotation instructions, stains exclusion, body-impression threshold and who pays transport. A headline warranty period is less useful than knowing what evidence is required for a claim. SleepMaker’s New Zealand guidance recommends using a quality mattress protector, and a protector can also help satisfy cleanliness conditions, but follow the exact warranty document for your model.

Look for independent evidence

Prefer a review that identifies the exact model and reports a method, test date and sample size. Do not substitute a retailer’s comfort description or a different Miracoil model’s result for testing of the mattress you plan to buy.

How can you safely buy a discontinued Maple?

  1. Identify the unit. Photograph the sewn-in label and record the model name, size, production date and any code before discussing price.
  2. Confirm status. Ask whether it is new old stock, ex-display, a customer return or previously slept on.
  3. Inspect it in person. Check for permanent dips, uneven edges, odour, moisture damage, broken handles and staining. A protector does not reverse structural wear.
  4. Test the base. Make sure your bed frame or foundation supports the mattress in the manner required by the seller or warranty document.
  5. Get terms in writing. Record the price, delivery charge, removal service, return window and warranty transferability on the invoice.
  6. Negotiate with evidence. Use condition, age and missing documentation to justify an offer; the historic $899 CHOICE transaction is context, not a target price.
  7. Protect it immediately. Use a correctly sized queen mattress protector from the first night and keep the receipt and care instructions.

Decline the purchase if the mattress has been used without a verifiable hygiene history, has a visible permanent impression, or is sold without a model label and written terms. The risk of an unreturnable, worn mattress can outweigh the appeal of matching an older bed.

What are the main limitations of a Maple review?

  • The public CHOICE listing confirms the category and specifications but not the Maple’s numerical performance scores.
  • The discontinued status makes current pricing, stock and warranty support uncertain.
  • “Miracoil” covers more than one generation and feel, so current product claims cannot be backdated automatically.
  • Spring count, layer count and thickness describe construction at a high level but do not establish pressure relief, heat retention or long-term sagging resistance.

These limitations do not make the Maple impossible to assess; they define what can be said accurately. It is a documented, firm queen mattress with a known historical price and basic dimensions, but not a model for which the public record supports a complete performance verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the SleepMaker Miracoil Maple worth buying?

Buy one only when its condition, identity and written terms are unusually clear and the price reflects discontinued status. For most shoppers, a current mattress with a published specification, a usable trial or return policy and a model-specific warranty is the safer replacement path.

The Maple’s strongest evidence is its specification and the substantial discount achieved in CHOICE’s 2017 shopping exercise. Its weakest evidence is performance: the public page does not reveal the test scores needed to judge durability, stability, support or temperature behaviour. Treat current Miracoil marketing as information about newer products, then verify the exact mattress rather than assuming it is a Maple successor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I identify a Maple mattress without the original receipt?

Look for the sewn-in law or product label, then photograph every model name, size and code shown there. Ask SleepMaker or the seller to confirm whether those details correspond to the Maple; a retailer’s generic Miracoil description is not sufficient proof.

Will a 30 cm mattress fit my existing sheets?

Measure the mattress and the fitted sheet’s pocket depth rather than relying on a nominal queen label. A 30 cm mattress can require deeper-pocket bedding, especially if a protector or topper is used.

Is a firm mattress suitable for side sleepers?

It depends on whether your shoulders and hips can sink enough to keep your spine level. Test the mattress on your side and have a companion check alignment; firmness labels are not standardized across brands.

What should I keep for a future warranty claim?

Keep the dated invoice, model-label photographs, delivery record and care instructions together. Also record the base used and any required rotation or cleaning, because warranty decisions commonly depend on proof of proper setup and maintenance.
