The SleepMaker Alaska is a discontinued Australian pocket-spring mattress that can still appear as old retail stock, a display model or a used listing. Public evidence points to comfortable cushioning and decent support, but the historical price was high for what reviewers felt it delivered, and one owner report describes rapid sagging. Treat any listing as a used or discontinued-product purchase: identify the exact firmness, inspect the mattress in person, obtain the original invoice and ask SleepMaker to confirm warranty eligibility before paying. The queen specification published by CHOICE is 30 cm thick, weighs 40 kg, uses 318 springs per square metre and has 13 layers.
What is the SleepMaker Alaska mattress?
The Alaska was a spring mattress sold in Australia by SleepMaker. It is no longer in the manufacturer’s current catalogue, which means a listing today is most likely old stock, a floor/display model or a second-hand mattress rather than a current production item. SleepMaker says its mattresses are Australian made and sold through independent Australian retailers, but retailer stock and pricing can vary by state and store.
The name “Alaska” covers more than one comfort version. Bedbuyer reviewed an Alaska Medium, while other listings may identify the mattress as plush, firm or super-firm. Confirming that label matters: two mattresses carrying the Alaska name can feel materially different even if their construction is related.

Is the SleepMaker Alaska any good?
It can be comfortable and supportive, but the public evidence does not justify calling it a strong value or a low-risk purchase today. Bedbuyer’s editorial verdict on the Alaska Medium says it is comfortable and offers decent support, while also calling the price “a bit of a stretch.” The same review describes the spring system as having a “slightly flimsy feeling.” That is an editorial impression, not a controlled durability measurement.
What the positive evidence says
Bedbuyer records Australian-made five-zone micro-pocket springs, a polyfoam-and-wool top, Climatex quilting and a KülKōte coating on the Alaska Medium. Those components are intended to combine pressure cushioning, zoned support and temperature-management features, but the review does not publish laboratory scores for each component. Comfort is therefore personal: body weight, sleeping position, preferred firmness and the condition of the individual mattress all matter.
What the negative evidence says
ProductReview displays a 3.3 rating for the SleepMaker Alaska Medium Queen. One reviewer reports that the mattress sagged within weeks, was sent for repair and sagged again shortly after it was returned. This is a single consumer account, not a measured failure rate or a representative sample. It is still a reason to inspect any used or display mattress carefully and to verify that a warranty claim would be available to you.

What is not publicly established
CHOICE lists test categories for support, sagging resistance, stability, breathability and wear resistance, but the detailed member-only scores are not publicly visible. No public source in the available material establishes an average lifespan, a quantified sagging rate, motion-transfer score or temperature result. Do not treat the spring count or layer count as a substitute for those missing measurements.
What firmness is the Alaska?
There is no single Alaska feel. Bedbuyer records plush, medium, firm and super-firm options, while CHOICE identifies its listed queen as a claimed firm model. A seller who says only “Alaska” has not given enough information to predict the feel.
How to identify the version
- Ask for a photograph of the law label, model tag or original invoice showing the comfort name.
- Match the label to the seller’s description: Medium, Firm, Plush and Super-Firm are not interchangeable terms.
- Lie on the actual mattress for at least several minutes in your normal sleeping position if an in-person inspection is possible.
- Do not infer firmness from age or thickness. A 30 cm mattress can still have different comfort layers and feels.
If you share a bed, test together. A feel that seems supportive when sitting on the edge can feel very different when lying on your side or back.

How much did the SleepMaker Alaska cost?
The prices below are historical figures and should not be treated as a current recommended retail price. CHOICE lists a queen regular price of $1,899 and records $1,475 as the price paid after a sale or bargaining. Bedbuyer lists a $1,999 queen RRP for its Alaska Medium review.

A seller asking a similar amount today is asking you to pay near an old-new price for a discontinued product, often without the protections of a current model. Compare the delivered price, condition, age and warranty status with current replacement ranges before agreeing.
Is the SleepMaker Alaska discontinued?
Yes. CHOICE marks the Alaska as discontinued, and it does not appear in SleepMaker’s current catalogue, which lists newer collections such as Elements, Lifestyle, Performance, Luxury, Miracoil, Osteo and ACA. Discontinued does not automatically mean defective; it does mean that availability, replacement parts, retailer support and warranty administration require extra checking.
What a current listing may actually be
- New old stock: Unused inventory manufactured or purchased before the model was withdrawn. Ask when it was made and whether it has been stored flat and dry.
- Display model: A mattress that may have been tested by many shoppers. Ask how long it was on the floor and whether it has been covered.
- Used mattress: A private sale with unknown usage, hygiene history and possible loss of warranty transferability.
SleepMaker’s terms state that products can be withdrawn or changed and that stock and prices vary by retailer, state and store. A retailer’s claim that a mattress is “new” does not by itself prove that the original warranty still applies.
What warranty did the Alaska have?
Bedbuyer records a 10-year warranty for the Alaska Medium. SleepMaker says warranty periods vary from five to 10 years by range, so the exact written terms for your model and purchase date control. A 10-year statement should not be treated as confirmation that every owner, every defect or the full purchase price is covered for the entire period.

Documents to obtain before buying
- Request the original tax invoice or receipt showing the retailer, model, size and purchase date.
- Ask for the manufacture date or serial/model number from the law label.
- Have the seller state in writing whether the mattress is new old stock, a display model or used.
- Contact SleepMaker customer care with those details and ask whether the warranty is valid for that model and whether it transfers to a second owner.
- Keep the seller’s written response with the invoice and listing photographs.
SleepMaker’s customer-care process requires proof of purchase for a warranty claim and includes a process for sinking complaints. Without the original proof of purchase, you may have no practical way to establish the warranty start date or ownership chain.

Why might a SleepMaker Alaska sag?
The available evidence confirms one owner allegation of rapid sagging, but it does not establish why that mattress failed or how common the problem is. Sagging can also be confused with a comfort-layer body impression, an uneven base or a frame that does not support the mattress evenly. Diagnose the setup before assuming the spring unit is defective.
Checks for a sinking complaint
- Remove bedding and measure the impression with a straightedge across the mattress; photograph the result with a ruler and the law label visible.
- Check that the bed base or slats support the full mattress evenly and have not bowed, broken or shifted.
- Look for edge collapse, fabric damage, stains, moisture or odour that could affect a claim.
- Confirm that the mattress is the correct size for the frame and is not overhanging.
- Keep dated photographs and written communication if you contact the retailer or SleepMaker.
SleepMaker’s post-purchase guidance recommends rotating a new mattress during the break-in period. Follow the care instructions supplied with your specific mattress; do not flip it unless the label says it is double-sided.
How should you inspect an Alaska before purchase?
An in-person inspection is the safest approach because the model is discontinued and listings can omit age or condition. Use this sequence before handing over money.
- Verify identity: Photograph the law label and confirm Alaska plus the exact comfort version, size and dimensions.
- Check age and provenance: Obtain the invoice, manufacture or purchase date and the name of the original retailer.
- Inspect the sleep surface: Look for permanent body impressions, ridges, loose quilting, exposed foam, stains, mould or unusual odour.
- Inspect the edges: Sit and lie near each side to check for collapse or a pronounced roll-off feeling.
- Test support: Lie in your normal position and change positions. Note whether your hips sink substantially lower than your shoulders.
- Check the base: Examine slats, centre rails and legs for bowing or movement. A defective base can mimic a mattress fault.
- Confirm warranty status: Ask SleepMaker, not only the seller, whether the supplied documents support a claim and whether ownership can transfer.
- Record the transaction: Keep the listing, photographs, receipt and written condition statement.
Walk away if the seller refuses to show the label, cannot explain the mattress history or pressures you to pay before inspection.
What is the Alaska made from?
Bedbuyer’s Alaska Medium description includes five-zone Australian-made micro-pocket springs, a polyfoam-and-wool top, Climatex quilting and KülKōte coating. The description identifies the main construction elements but does not provide foam densities, quilting weights or a measured breathability result. Those missing details make it impossible to calculate durability from the component list alone.
The CHOICE listing’s 13 layers and 318 springs per square metre are useful identification details. They should not be read as a guarantee that one Alaska version has the same internal build as another, or that a higher layer count automatically outperforms a newer mattress.

How does the Alaska compare with a current replacement?
Because the Alaska is discontinued, compare a candidate replacement on evidence and ownership terms, not on branding alone. Use the same questions for every model:
- Comfort feel: Is the tested version plush, medium, firm or extra firm, and can both sleepers try it?
- Support design: What spring or foam system is used, and is the manufacturer specific about zoning?
- Motion isolation: Can the retailer demonstrate movement transfer, or is the claim only descriptive?
- Temperature management: Which materials are included, and are there independent test results?
- Thickness and fit: Will the mattress fit your frame, bedding and headboard clearance?
- Warranty: How long is it, what proof is required, and does it transfer?
- Trial or exchange policy: Is there a written home trial, comfort exchange or only a change-of-mind exclusion?
- Delivered cost: Include freight, old-mattress removal and any setup charge.
- Evidence quality: Separate laboratory testing, editorial impressions and individual owner reports.
Do not compare CHOICE scores unless you can access the underlying member data for both mattresses. A public specification table cannot substitute for the unavailable test results.
How do you care for an Alaska you keep?
Use a queen waterproof mattress protector sized for a 30 cm mattress, while checking the actual depth of your version before ordering. SleepMaker itself recommends considering a mattress protector. It helps limit spills and body oils reaching the upholstery, but it cannot correct a sagging spring unit or an unsuitable base.
- Rotate the mattress during the initial break-in period according to SleepMaker’s instructions.
- Keep the base level and evenly supported; tighten loose hardware and replace damaged slats.
- Lift rather than drag the mattress when moving it, especially because the queen specification weighs 40 kg.
- Air the room and address moisture promptly if you notice dampness or odour.
- Retain the label and purchase documents for as long as the warranty may apply.
Is a used SleepMaker Alaska worth buying?
It can be sensible only at a substantial condition-adjusted discount and with documentation. A used Alaska with a clean history, minimal impressions, a sound base and verifiable warranty is a different proposition from an anonymous marketplace mattress.
A reasonable buy
- You have confirmed the exact comfort version and it suits both sleepers.
- The mattress is clean, structurally sound and has no persistent body impression.
- The seller supplies the original invoice and allows an inspection before payment.
- SleepMaker confirms the warranty position in writing.
- The price reflects age, transport and the risk of discontinued ownership.
A poor buy
- The seller describes it only as “Alaska” without a size or firmness label.
- There is visible sagging, edge collapse, staining, mould or strong odour.
- The seller claims a warranty but cannot produce proof of purchase.
- The asking price approaches the historical $1,899–$1,999 queen pricing despite uncertain age.
- You cannot test the mattress or verify the base on which it was used.
Who should consider the Alaska, and who should skip it?
Consider it if you specifically like the tested feel, can inspect the exact mattress and are comfortable managing discontinued-product warranty risk. It may appeal to a buyer who values a substantial 30 cm profile and pocket-spring construction and finds a well-kept example at a fair price.

Bottom-line verdict on the SleepMaker Alaska
The Alaska is not an automatic “bad mattress,” but it is a difficult blind purchase in 2026. Public reviews support acceptable comfort and support, while the historical pricing weakens its value case and one owner report raises a durability warning. Since the model is discontinued, the decisive factors are the individual mattress’s condition, exact firmness, purchase records, warranty confirmation and asking price. Inspect first, document everything and compare with current alternatives before committing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 10-year Alaska warranty guarantee a free replacement?
No. The 10-year figure recorded for the Alaska Medium is the warranty period, not a promise of an unconditional replacement. Coverage, remedies, exclusions and any ownership requirements depend on the written warranty and proof of purchase.
Can I make a warranty claim without the original receipt?
SleepMaker customer care says proof of purchase is required for a warranty claim. Ask the seller for the invoice before purchase; a bank transfer record or marketplace message may not establish the model and original purchase date.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is a useful signal of owner experience, but it is not a controlled test or a statistical failure rate. Treat the rating and the reported sagging incident as prompts for inspection rather than proof that every Alaska will fail.
What should I photograph when buying a discontinued mattress?
Photograph the law label, all four sides, the sleep surface with bedding removed, any impressions or damage, the base and the seller’s invoice. Keep those images with written confirmation of the mattress’s age, condition and warranty status.
Is the queen Alaska compatible with any queen bed base?
The CHOICE queen dimensions are 203.5 x 153 cm, but base construction still matters. Confirm that the base is the correct size, level and evenly supportive; a weak or damaged base can create comfort and sagging problems regardless of the mattress model.
