Buy Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition (the 2014 remaster), install it on Windows PC, Xbox One/Series X|S, or PlayStation 4, then choose Main Story → Start a New Game. The Definitive Edition includes 24 previously released DLC packs, rebuilt visuals and audio, and gameplay tuning that the 2012 release does not have. On PC, GOG is the simplest offline option because it is DRM-free; Steam adds cloud saves but is region-locked in Germany. Xbox Series X|S uses the Xbox One catalog version, while this research found no native PS5, Nintendo Switch, or Switch 2 edition. The game is a single-player, third-person Hong Kong crime story built around martial-arts combat, driving, gunfights, investigations and side activities.
Which version of Sleeping Dogs should you buy?
Choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, not the 2012 original, unless you specifically want the older PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 build. United Front Games and Square Enix rebuilt the remaster for newer hardware and folded in 24 previously released DLC packs, including Year of the Snake, Nightmare in North Point, Zodiac Tournament and Wheels of Fury.
The release dates were 9 October 2014 in Australia, 10 October in Europe and 14 October in North America. A Feral Interactive macOS port followed on 31 March 2016. The remaster is not simply a resolution bump. Senior producer Dan Sochan told Polygon that the team had “gone beyond just increasing resolution and running at 1080p,” tuning gameplay, ambience, audio fidelity and visuals after listening to players.

Most original DLC is integrated and rebalanced. The Gold Top Dog and Silver Top Dog XP boosts were removed as unfair, and the Valve T-Shirt Pack is absent from the standard package. On PC, the unofficial Lotus Patch can restore those shirts, but it is optional and not required to play.

The game follows Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American undercover police officer infiltrating the Sun On Yee triad. It is single-player only, with online leaderboards and friend challenges rather than a multiplayer campaign. Expect directional melee inspired by character-action games, occasional gunfights, cars, motorcycles, boats, parkour, karaoke, dating, street races and police “heat.”

How do I play Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on Windows PC?
Install the Definitive Edition from Steam or GOG, complete the first-run settings, and select Main Story → Start a New Game. Steam is convenient if you want cloud saves; GOG is preferable when you want an offline installer with no client requirement.

A 64-bit operating system is required. Although the legacy store requirements mention older Windows versions, the Steam client itself supports Windows 10 and later only from 1 January 2024. Check your OS before buying. The PCGamingWiki compatibility notes and updates are useful for graphics, controller and save-file issues (PCGamingWiki).
Steam installation and first launch
- Open Steam, sign in and select Library.
- Choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, install it, then select Play.
- On the Mac port, a pre-game Options window appears; select Play. Windows normally proceeds directly to the title screen.
- Press Enter/Return at the title screen and acknowledge the autosave notice.
- Set brightness so the logo is barely visible, then choose volume, subtitles and UI scale.
- From the main menu select Main Story, then Start a New Game.
The opening sequence has Wei Shen escaping a drug bust through Victoria Harbour. The game autosaves, so you do not need to create a manual save before beginning. Nightmare in North Point and Year of the Snake appear as separate story choices on the main menu.
To remove the Steam installation, open Library, right-click the game, choose Manage and select Uninstall. Steam Cloud support was added on 18 December 2025.

GOG installation, DRM and offline play
GOG offers an offline installer, and GOG Galaxy is optional. You can download the installer, accept the licence agreement and launch without Galaxy. Galaxy adds conveniences such as achievements, overlay and cloud features.
GOG’s FAQ states: “No! GOG games have no DRM and can be played without an internet connection, totally offline.” The GOG build supports XInput controllers, but it does not support DirectInput controllers. Use an Xbox-style XInput pad on Windows.
Steam uses Steam DRM and has a Germany region restriction: the game is not sold there, and a copy bought elsewhere cannot be installed or played while located in Germany. This is a storefront restriction, not a hardware limitation.

Feral’s Mac port is sold through Steam and the Mac App Store. Its minimum specification is OS X 10.10.5, a 2 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, 1 GB graphics memory and 20 GB of storage. The recommended specification is OS X 10.11.2, a 2.8 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM, 2 GB graphics memory, 20 GB of storage and a gamepad.
Feral lists AMD Radeon HD 5xxx/4xxx, ATI X1xxx, ATI HD2xxx, Intel GMA, HD5000, HD4000, HD5300, Iris 5100, HD3000, Iris 6100 and Nvidia 1xx/8xxx/3xx/9xxx/7xxx families as unsupported GPUs. Confirm your Mac model against Feral’s current ReadMe before purchase.
Launch through Steam’s Library using the same sequence as Windows. The Mac Options window also includes video settings, an iTunes pause option, a Messages-away setting and a support-report generator. Feral recommends a gamepad, but keyboard and mouse are supported.
How do I play it on Xbox or Xbox Series X?
Buy and download the Xbox One Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition listing from Microsoft Store, install it, then launch it from My games & apps or your library. The title is listed for Xbox Series X|S through the current Xbox catalog, but the underlying product remains the Xbox One edition.

How do I play it on PlayStation 4 or PS5?
On PS4, buy the game from PlayStation Store, install it, launch it from the library and use the DualShock 4. Choose Main Story → Start a New Game after the opening settings.
The available listing is a PS4 SKU. This research found no native PS5 version and did not confirm whether a PS4 disc or digital licence runs through Sony’s backward-compatibility system on PS5. Check the current PlayStation compatibility information for your region before buying specifically for PS5.
Which controls work best: keyboard and mouse or a controller?
Both are supported. Keyboard and mouse provide direct camera and aiming control, while an XInput gamepad gives the intended dual-stick driving and melee feel. Feral’s manual says, “You can play Sleeping Dogs™: Definitive Edition with either a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad,” but also notes that gamepad controls cannot be customized.

In combat, chain up to four light strikes, finish with a heavy strike, grapple with F, throw with E and press F near a red-highlighted object for an environmental kill. Press the counter button when an attacker glows red. From cover, Space vaults while slowing time for a gunfight.
On Windows, XInput pads receive Xbox prompts. DualShock 3/4 support is listed as proper on macOS, but DualShock 4 mappings on Windows are described as poor without community software. Nintendo controllers are not natively mapped. PCGamingWiki also records a camera zoom-in while sprinting on keyboard and mouse that does not occur with a controller.

Your phone opens contacts, messages, reports and the Social Hub. The map marks green story missions, blue cases, orange races and yellow favors. After the early linear missions, Hong Kong opens into a dense set of optional activities rather than a purely mission-to-mission campaign.

Square Enix’s launch material described the original DLC catalogue as an $85 value; a 2014 Amazon retail package sold for $59.99 with a 28-page artbook. Those historical figures are context, not current prices.

Low frame rate
Feral’s performance order is to lower resolution first, then Graphics Level, V-Sync, anti-aliasing quality, shadow resolution, shadow filtering, SSAO, motion blur and world density. Low-resolution buffers can help after those changes. Close other applications, free disk space, disconnect a second monitor and connect a laptop to mains power.
Tearing or uneven frame pacing
On Windows 10, PCGamingWiki records tearing even with in-game V-Sync; a community workaround is a 58 FPS cap. Gameplay is uncapped, but above 120 FPS semi-automatic single shots can fire twice. Use the in-game limiter when your refresh rate is divisible by 60, or cap the frame rate externally. In-engine cutscenes are internally near 59.94 FPS and can duplicate frames; SPatch is an optional community fix.

Missing controller input
Use an XInput/Xbox-style controller for the Windows GOG build. DirectInput controllers are not supported there, and gamepad controls cannot be remapped in the Feral port. A DualShock controller may need community mapping software on Windows.
Save backup and transfer
Windows Steam saves use files named HK Autosave* and HK GameSlot* in the install folder. Nightmare in North Point uses HK AutosaveG/HK GameSlotG; Year of the Snake uses HK AutosaveN/HK GameSlotN. GOG saves are under the Save folder. Windows and OS X saves are compatible, so back up these folders before changing installations.
Unofficial Lotus Patch and SPatch can address specific bugs, borderless-window behavior, mouse bindings, cutscene timing, SMAA, VRAM detection and damage visuals. Treat them as optional troubleshooting tools: start with a clean install and add one patch at a time.

For most PC buyers, the practical decision is GOG for DRM-free offline play or Steam for cloud saves and familiar library management. Console players should buy the edition matching the hardware they actually own, remembering that this research found no native PS5 or Switch release.
What should I know before buying?
- Verify that the store listing says Definitive Edition, not the 2012 original.
- Check your account region, especially Germany for Steam.
- On PC, confirm 64-bit Windows, 20 GB free storage and at least 4 GB RAM.
- Use an XInput controller if you prefer a gamepad on Windows.
- Expect a mature-rated, single-player game with approximately 14 hours of main-story content and substantially more with side activities.
- Do not assume PS5 compatibility, Smart Delivery, Game Pass inclusion or a Series-specific performance mode without checking the current platform store.

Can I play Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition without an internet connection?
Yes on GOG: its offline installer does not require Galaxy or an internet connection after download. Steam normally requires the client and its DRM, although Steam’s offline mode can work after the game has been authenticated.
Does Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition support cross-save between PC and consoles?
