Skyscanner is the better place to start when your destination or dates are flexible; KAYAK is usually the better fit when you know your route and want detailed filters or help deciding when to book. Neither guarantees the lowest final fare. Both compare options from airlines and online travel agencies, but the price and availability can change before you complete a booking.
What is the difference between Skyscanner and KAYAK?
Both are flight metasearch engines: they gather fares from airlines and online travel agencies, display options for comparison, and send you to a provider to complete the purchase. They are search tools, not the party that takes payment or manages your ticket.
KAYAK describes its service as scanning hundreds of travel sites to collect prices and deals. Skyscanner says it searches across hundreds of airlines, online travel agencies, and other travel providers, then presents options side by side. In either case, the provider shown for a fare is the one you should check before paying.
The practical difference is how each helps you narrow a trip. Skyscanner is oriented toward finding possibilities when you have room to change the destination or dates. KAYAK is particularly useful for a defined itinerary when you want to filter the results or consider a short-term price forecast.

Which is better for finding cheap flights?
Neither is consistently cheapest for every trip. The results depend on the route, dates, providers included in a search, and live seat availability; a listed fare can change or disappear before checkout.
Skyscanner publishes a comparison of its own search results: it says that in 70% of the flight-price comparisons it analysed, it showed a lower-priced flight option for the same city-to-city search than the selected travel site. That result covers searches from November 2025 through August 2026. It excludes later optional charges such as baggage and seat selection, and Skyscanner explicitly says the finding is not a guarantee that it will always be cheaper.
That qualification matters. A low headline fare is not necessarily the lowest trip cost: the amount due can change once you select baggage, seats, or a payment method, and the options and charges depend on the provider. Compare the same flight and fare conditions, then review the provider’s final total before booking. A different itinerary, a different provider, or a later search may produce a different result.

Start with Skyscanner if you are open to going almost anywhere, shifting your travel month, or considering a different destination. Its Everywhere search and whole-month or cheapest-month views are designed to help surface possibilities rather than answer only one fixed-date question.
When you have not chosen a destination
Everywhere lets you explore destinations by price. It can be useful when your main constraint is a budget or a willingness to travel somewhere unexpected. Treat the results as a shortlist for further checking, not a promise that a particular trip can be booked at the displayed amount.
When you can move your dates
Whole-month and cheapest-month views help reveal lower-price patterns across dates. Skyscanner says the month and Everywhere figures are estimates based on prices users found during the previous eight days; its help page was updated March 26, 2026. Because those figures are not a live booking quote, open the specific itinerary and verify the current fare before making plans around it.

When you already know the route
If your origin, destination, and dates are settled, KAYAK is a strong first search because you can work from a defined itinerary and use filters to remove options that do not suit you. Skyscanner can still be useful as a second comparison, especially if a nearby date or alternative destination remains possible.

Does KAYAK have better filters?
KAYAK is the better fit when you need to exclude specific kinds of flights. Its documented filters include layover length and airport, airline or alliance, total travel time, cabin, Wi-Fi, and aircraft type.
These filters help turn a broad results list into one that matches practical preferences. For instance, a traveler who wants to avoid a long connection can filter by layover length; someone with a preferred airline or cabin can narrow the options on those criteria. Filtering does not establish that the remaining fare is the cheapest overall, so compare the final cost and itinerary details before choosing.
Skyscanner’s strongest distinction in the supplied feature set is flexible discovery through destination and month views, rather than this particular set of detailed flight filters. If you have a must-have requirement—such as avoiding a specific connection airport—check that the displayed itinerary actually meets it instead of relying only on the headline result.
Can KAYAK tell me when to buy a flight?
KAYAK offers a Price Forecast that uses historical and real-time data to estimate whether prices for a searched flight may rise or fall over the next seven days. It can inform a buy-now-or-wait decision, but it is a forecast rather than a guarantee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
KAYAK says it analyses more than a billion travel information requests each year. That scale describes the information it says it uses; it does not make a prediction certain for an individual fare. If the flight matters and the price works for your budget, weigh the forecast against the risk that availability or the fare could change before you return.

Both services also offer price alerts for tracking a route. On Skyscanner, create an alert after searching a route and specific date, and sign in to an account; the service emails you when prices change. KAYAK documents price alerts as well. An alert is useful for monitoring, but the fare in an email may no longer be available when you open the result.
Are Skyscanner and KAYAK prices real?
They are search results tied to provider offers, but they should not be treated as locked-in prices until the provider confirms the fare during booking. Skyscanner says alert emails are snapshots and that live prices can change within minutes or seconds as availability shifts. Its flexible-date and destination figures are estimates, not live quotes.
KAYAK likewise explains that prices from providers can change, disappear, or fail to match because seats and inventory are dynamic. KAYAK does not set those prices and cannot guarantee that a displayed fare remains available. This is a limitation of searching across live travel inventory, not a promise by either service that a result will be held for you.
Before paying, compare the exact flight, fare conditions, and total shown by the airline or agency you are sent to. If the provider’s price differs from the search result, use the provider’s current booking total to decide whether to proceed.
How should I compare a flight on both sites?
Use the same origin, destination, dates, passenger details, and cabin when you cross-check. Otherwise, you may be comparing different itineraries rather than different search results for the same trip.
- Choose the right starting point. Use Skyscanner first if you can vary destination or month. Use KAYAK first if the route and dates are fixed and your decision depends on stops, travel time, aircraft, or other listed filters.
- Set the trip constraints. Enter the same route and dates on each service. Apply filters only for requirements you genuinely care about, and inspect the itinerary to confirm the connection and flight details.
- Compare equivalent fares. Check that the flight times, stops, cabin, and fare conditions match. A lower displayed number may reflect a different flight or set of included services.
- Check the provider’s booking page. Follow the result to the airline or agency and review the current fare there. Search results and alerts can be snapshots, and providers control their live inventory.
- Review the complete total. Account for baggage, seat selection, and payment charges where applicable. Optional costs may not be included in a headline comparison.
- Decide who you are comfortable booking with. The airline or agency handling the booking—not the search engine—will manage payment, changes, cancellations, and support.
Who handles payment, changes, and customer support?
The airline or online travel agency that sells the ticket handles the actual booking. Skyscanner says it does not sell the booking itself; KAYAK says the booking is made with the provider rather than with KAYAK.

That distinction is important after you select a result. Check the provider name, fare rules, and support arrangements on the booking page before paying. If you need to change or cancel later, contact the company that issued the ticket and refer to its terms; the search engine did not take the booking.

Choose based on what is still undecided. Skyscanner is the more natural first stop for trip discovery; KAYAK is the more targeted first stop for evaluating a known route. When the stakes or price difference justify it, use both to cross-check the same itinerary and then confirm the live total with the provider.

What should you remember before booking?
- Search tools help find and compare provider offers; they do not guarantee that every available fare appears or that the lowest result will remain available.
- Use Skyscanner’s flexible views to explore, but verify an exact fare before relying on it.
- Use KAYAK’s filters and forecast as decision aids, not as a guarantee of the best flight or a future price.
- Compare equivalent flights and the final provider total, including relevant extras.
- Confirm the seller and its terms, because that company will handle your booking and any later support needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book a flight directly through either search engine?
No. Both send you to the airline or travel agency offering the itinerary, where you complete the booking. The provider’s booking page is where you should confirm the seller and applicable fare terms.
Why might the same flight show a different price after I click through?
A seat or fare can change or sell while results are being searched, and the provider’s inventory is dynamic. Skyscanner also notes that alert emails are snapshots, so a price in an email may have changed by the time you open it.
Is a cheaper flight result always the better deal?
Not necessarily: two results may differ in itinerary or fare conditions, and optional charges can affect the total. Compare the same flight details and the provider’s complete price before deciding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I rely on an alert to hold a fare for me?
No. An alert reports a price change; it does not reserve a seat or lock in a fare. Recheck the live booking page when you are ready to purchase.
