SK hynix offers the purer, better-demonstrated AI-memory exposure, while Samsung Electronics offers a broader company with an improving HBM business. Through the second quarter of 2026, SK hynix had the clearer lead in HBM revenue share and had moved to HBM4 mass shipments. Samsung reported record Memory results, increased HBM4 sales and began sending HBM4E samples to major customers, but its investment case still depends on qualification and ramp execution.
That distinction matters because the stocks respond to different drivers. SK hynix gives investors more direct sensitivity to HBM demand, pricing and supply execution. Samsung combines HBM upside with a much larger, diversified electronics business that can cushion a memory downturn but can also dilute the effect of an AI-memory boom. The better choice depends on whether you prioritize concentration and current execution or diversification and potential catch-up.
What does AI-memory exposure mean for a stock investor?
AI-memory exposure is the degree to which a company’s revenue, profit and valuation depend on memory products used in accelerated-computing systems. The key product in this comparison is high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which sits alongside AI accelerators and supplies very high data-transfer bandwidth within servers. HBM demand is therefore tied to the build-out of AI infrastructure rather than only to traditional personal-computer or smartphone memory.

Exposure has several layers. A company can design or manufacture HBM, hold a large share of HBM industry revenue, ship the newest generation in volume, and earn attractive margins on that output. It can also be exposed indirectly through other memory products, packaging, equipment or unrelated businesses. A stock with direct HBM exposure usually reacts more sharply to changes in AI-server orders, HBM pricing, yields and customer qualification. A diversified company may participate in the same growth while experiencing a less concentrated effect on consolidated earnings.
#1 Best Overall
HBM is still a memory business, so AI growth does not eliminate the usual semiconductor cycle. Capacity additions, inventory corrections, pricing pressure, technology transitions and customer concentration can all turn a strong demand story into volatile earnings. The practical question is not simply which company sells HBM, but which one is converting demand into qualified, profitable and repeatable shipments.
Which stock currently has the more direct HBM exposure?
SK hynix has the stronger direct exposure on the evidence available through Q2 2026. Its reported industry share is higher, and it said HBM4 had entered mass shipments. Samsung is making clear progress, but its HBM4E evidence is at the customer-sample stage rather than demonstrated mass production.
| Exposure indicator | SK hynix | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Global HBM revenue share | 56.4% in Q1 2026, according to IDC data cited in an SK hynix SEC filing (IDC, 2026) | Not stated in the cited materials |
| Global DRAM revenue share | 29.1% in Q1 2026, according to IDC data cited in an SK hynix SEC filing (IDC, 2026) | Not stated in the cited materials |
| HBM4 shipment status | Mass shipments began in Q2 2026, according to SK hynix | HBM4 sales were scaled up in Q2 2026 |
| HBM4E status | Not stated in the cited Q2 release | First HBM4E samples shipped to major customers in Q2 2026 |
The HBM share figure is the most direct measure of current AI-memory positioning in the supplied evidence. It indicates that SK hynix captures more than half of global HBM revenue, while its DRAM share is materially lower. That gap suggests HBM is an especially important strength inside SK hynix’s broader memory franchise rather than merely a reflection of overall DRAM scale.
Samsung’s evidence points to momentum rather than a quantified leadership position. Its Memory Business reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit, increased HBM4 sales and sent the first HBM4E samples to major customers. Samples are an important technology and customer-engagement milestone, but they do not by themselves establish qualification, production yield, shipment volume or contribution to consolidated profit.
How do the latest reported financial results compare?
The companies’ Q2 2026 releases show exceptional profitability, but the figures are not perfectly comparable in business mix. SK hynix is more closely tied to memory, whereas Samsung reports a much broader group. Read the numbers as evidence of current earnings power, not as a promise that the same margins will persist through the next memory cycle.
| Reported period and measure | SK hynix | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 2026 revenue | KRW 79.3187 trillion | KRW 171.5 trillion consolidated |
| Q2 2026 operating profit | KRW 60.5426 trillion | KRW 89.5 trillion consolidated |
| Q2 2026 operating margin | 76%, as reported by SK hynix | Not stated in the cited release |
| FY 2025 revenue | Not stated in the cited materials | KRW 333.6 trillion |
| FY 2025 operating profit | Not stated in the cited materials | KRW 43.6 trillion |
SK hynix’s reported quarter shows what a memory specialist can earn when HBM demand, pricing and production execution align. The 76% operating margin is extraordinary for a cyclical semiconductor manufacturer and should be treated as a point-in-time result. It is not a normalized margin assumption for a full cycle.
Samsung’s consolidated results demonstrate greater absolute scale and a record contribution from its Memory Business. Because the group includes businesses beyond memory, consolidated revenue and operating profit do not isolate the financial effect of HBM. Investors need the segment disclosure and subsequent quarters to determine how much of the improvement is structural HBM growth, broader memory pricing, or strength in other divisions.
Samsung’s FY 2025 figures provide an annual baseline for the diversified group. They should not be compared directly with SK hynix’s Q2 margin as though they represented the same period or scope. The useful comparison is strategic: SK hynix offers more concentrated operating leverage to HBM, while Samsung can spread gains and losses across a wider portfolio.
How convincing is SK hynix’s HBM4 execution?
SK hynix’s most important execution signal is that it said HBM4 began mass shipments in Q2 2026. Mass shipment language implies a later stage of commercialization than design announcements or customer samples, although actual volume, customer mix and contract economics are not provided in the cited release.

What SK hynix says about product competitiveness
In its July 29, 2026 release, SK hynix said HBM4 achieved customer-required operating speeds, industry-leading power efficiency and cost competitiveness. Those are the attributes that determine whether a memory product can be designed into an AI system at scale: it must meet performance targets, fit within a system’s power budget and make economic sense for the buyer.
The same release described a strategy based on quality, stable supply supported by high yield, cost competitiveness and industry-leading performance. For investors, that list is useful because it identifies the operating variables to monitor. A technology lead that cannot be manufactured at high yield can fail commercially; a high-yield product with weak power or cost characteristics can lose qualification.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat mass shipments do and do not prove
Mass shipments are stronger evidence than a prototype or a sample because they indicate a transition into commercial delivery. They still do not reveal the duration of customer commitments, the price per stack, the share of output allocated to each customer, or the return on the capital invested in capacity. Those unknowns matter when judging whether an unusually strong quarter can continue.
SK hynix’s high HBM revenue share also creates a monitoring burden. If HBM demand remains strong, concentration can amplify upside. If a major customer changes specifications, delays a platform, or negotiates lower prices, the same concentration can amplify downside.
Is Samsung catching up in HBM4 and HBM4E?
Samsung is catching up in commercial HBM4 activity, but the available evidence does not yet establish parity with SK hynix’s demonstrated shipment position. Samsung reported scaled HBM4 sales and first HBM4E samples to major customers in its July 30, 2026 release. That combination shows meaningful progress in both current product sales and next-generation customer engagement.
Why Samsung’s HBM4 sales matter
Scaling HBM4 sales means Samsung moved beyond a purely developmental narrative. It indicates that customers were purchasing HBM4 output and that Samsung had begun expanding the business. The release did not state Samsung’s global HBM revenue share, shipment volume, achieved yield or HBM-specific margin, so the scale of the catch-up cannot be measured from that statement alone.
Why HBM4E samples are not the same as production
Shipping first samples to major customers is an early commercial milestone. Customers use samples for validation, system integration and qualification. The next steps can include design changes, reliability testing, production approval, volume allocation and recurring shipments. Timing and success at each step are uncertain, so samples should be interpreted as evidence of a pipeline rather than booked HBM4E revenue.
Samsung’s ability to turn samples into qualified volume is the central follow-up question. If qualification proceeds and capacity is available, HBM4E could strengthen Samsung’s AI-memory growth. If qualification takes longer or yields remain difficult, the sample milestone may have little near-term effect on earnings.
How do business concentration and diversification change the risk?
SK hynix is the more concentrated AI-memory expression. Its HBM leadership can make the stock more responsive to AI-server demand, HBM pricing and execution, but it also makes the investment case more dependent on those variables. A downturn in HBM orders or a loss of customer share would have a more visible effect than it would at a company with many large non-memory businesses.
Rank #3
Samsung Electronics is diversified across a broader corporate portfolio. That diversification can cushion a memory downturn if other businesses remain healthy, reduce the effect of a single product transition on consolidated earnings and provide more than one source of cash generation. The trade-off is lower purity: strong HBM demand may not move the entire company as directly as it moves a memory specialist.
Diversification is not automatic protection. Samsung still has to qualify and ramp HBM products, and weak execution in a strategically important memory business can affect investor confidence even when other divisions perform well. Conversely, SK hynix’s concentration is not automatically a flaw if its manufacturing, customer relationships and product roadmap continue to outperform.
What do earnings growth and margins imply for each thesis?
Record profits tell investors that AI-memory demand is already translating into financial results, not merely technical announcements. They do not settle the question of durability. Semiconductor earnings can rise rapidly when supply is constrained and prices are favorable, then fall when new capacity arrives or customers correct inventories.
For SK hynix, the unusually high quarterly margin demonstrates strong operating leverage. Additional HBM volume can add substantial profit when fixed costs are spread across profitable shipments. The reverse is also true: lower utilization, weaker pricing or yield problems can compress profit quickly.
For Samsung, record Memory revenue and operating profit show that its broader platform is participating in the cycle. Consolidated results make the earnings stream less dependent on one product, but they also require investors to separate memory improvement from changes in other businesses. A rising group profit number alone cannot prove that Samsung has closed the HBM competitiveness gap.
Investors should therefore track sequential and year-over-year trends, not just one record quarter. Useful questions include whether HBM volume is growing faster than total memory, whether pricing remains firm, whether margins hold as capacity expands, and whether customer qualification converts into recurring orders.
What are the main risks for an AI-memory investor?
- Memory-cycle reversal: AI demand can remain strong while a new wave of capacity creates oversupply, lower prices or weaker utilization.
- Capacity spending: Both companies may need substantial capital to support advanced-memory demand. The Associated Press reported investor concern about heavy capacity spending, intensifying competition and volatile share prices despite record profits.
- Execution and yield: HBM stacks require demanding manufacturing and packaging processes. Delays, low yield or reliability problems can postpone revenue even when customer demand exists.
- Customer concentration: A concentrated supplier can be especially sensitive to a large customer’s platform timing, specifications or purchasing decisions.
- Technology transitions: Moving from one HBM generation to the next can create qualification delays, inventory risk and temporary cost increases.
- Competitive pricing: New entrants or an incumbent’s successful catch-up can pressure prices and reduce the benefit of market-share gains.
- Valuation risk: A stock can fall after good results if investors had already priced in stronger growth, higher margins or a longer cycle.
- Currency and listing effects: Investors buying shares through a foreign listing or depositary instrument also face exchange-rate movements, trading-hour differences and instrument-specific fees.
How should valuation be compared?
The cited primary releases do not provide synchronized current or forward valuation multiples for the two stocks. It would be misleading to declare one cheaper without a dated market price, a consistent share-count basis and comparable earnings estimates. Valuation must be added from a dated market-data source at the time of publication or investment.
Use a common framework rather than a single ratio:
| Measure to collect | Why it matters | How to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Forward price-to-earnings | Shows what investors pay for expected profit, but forecasts are highly cyclical. | Use the same date, currency convention and analyst-estimate period for both companies. |
| Enterprise value to operating profit or EBITDA | Helps account for capital structure and can be useful when depreciation differs. | Keep definitions consistent and adjust for one-off items. |
| Price-to-book | Relevant for capital-intensive manufacturers with large fabs and equipment bases. | Interpret alongside asset age, utilization and expected returns on new capacity. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Tests whether accounting profit is converting into cash after capital spending. | Use a normalized period; peak-cycle cash flow can overstate sustainable yield. |
| Net cash or net debt | Changes resilience during a downturn and the ability to fund expansion. | Use the same reporting date and treatment of short-term investments. |
For SK hynix, a low-looking multiple may reflect peak HBM earnings rather than a bargain. For Samsung, a discount to a diversified conglomerate may reflect slower growth, weaker HBM confidence or the complexity of valuing several businesses together. The right comparison is the price paid for normalized, risk-adjusted cash generation, not the headline multiple attached to a record quarter.

Choose the SK hynix profile if direct AI-memory sensitivity is the priority
SK hynix is the more appropriate fit for an investor who wants the AI-memory thesis to be a central driver of the holding. The evidence of leading HBM revenue share and HBM4 mass shipments makes the exposure more direct and easier to connect to AI-server demand. That clarity comes with greater sensitivity to pricing, customer concentration, capacity decisions and the memory cycle.

Choose the Samsung profile if diversification and optionality matter more
Samsung Electronics fits an investor who wants participation in HBM growth without relying on memory for the entire corporate result. Its record Memory performance, scaled HBM4 sales and HBM4E sampling provide upside if execution improves. Other businesses can reduce the effect of a memory downturn, although they also mean HBM success may have a smaller effect on the overall stock.
When neither is a complete answer
An investor who cannot tolerate semiconductor-cycle volatility may find that neither stock provides a low-risk AI exposure. Both companies face capacity, competition and qualification risks. Position sizing, diversification across sectors and a willingness to reassess the thesis after each earnings release matter as much as choosing the stronger HBM operator.
What milestones could change the comparison?
The current verdict is based on demonstrated share and shipment evidence through Q2 2026. Future information could change it quickly. Watch for these specific developments:
- Samsung HBM4E qualification: Confirmation that samples passed customer validation and entered recurring volume production would strengthen Samsung’s catch-up case.
- Samsung HBM share disclosure: A credible, dated measure of global HBM revenue or shipment share would make the competitive comparison more precise.
- SK hynix shipment sustainability: Continued high-volume HBM4 deliveries, stable yields and repeat customer orders would test whether the lead is durable.
- Margin normalization: Several quarters of results will show whether exceptional profitability persists as competitors add capacity.
- Capital-spending returns: Compare new capacity with actual customer commitments and free cash flow rather than assuming every announced investment earns peak-cycle returns.
- Pricing and mix: Monitor whether growth comes from higher volume, higher prices, richer HBM content or a temporary product transition.
How can an investor make the comparison before buying?
A disciplined process prevents a single market-share statistic or record quarter from deciding the investment. Use the following sequence with the latest filings and market data available on the decision date.

- Map the capacity plan. Compare announced capital spending with funding capacity, expected customer demand and the risk of industry oversupply.
- Check valuation on one date. Collect current price, market capitalization, enterprise value and forward estimates using the same currency and methodology for both companies.
- Set invalidation points. Before buying, specify what would disprove the thesis: failed qualification, falling HBM share, persistent yield issues, margin collapse or a valuation that assumes unrealistic growth.
- Review after each release. Update the comparison when new shipment, share, pricing, capex or customer-qualification information arrives rather than relying on an old headline.
Bottom line: which stock offers better AI-memory exposure?
SK hynix is the better-documented pure AI-memory exposure through Q2 2026. Its leading HBM revenue share and reported HBM4 mass shipments provide stronger evidence of current execution. Samsung Electronics is the broader and more diversified choice: its Memory Business is producing records, HBM4 sales are scaling and HBM4E samples have reached major customers, but the next step is proving qualification and sustained volume.
The decision is therefore not simply “leader versus laggard.” It is concentrated execution versus diversified optionality. Choose the former only if you accept sharper memory-cycle and customer risks; choose the latter if portfolio breadth matters more and you are willing to wait for Samsung’s HBM4E ramp to be demonstrated in operating results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher HBM market share guarantee better stock returns?
No. Share can rise while prices fall, costs increase or investors reduce the valuation multiple assigned to cyclical earnings. Returns depend on the price paid, expected future cash flow and how much success is already reflected in the stock.
What should I look for after a company ships HBM samples?
Look for customer qualification, reliability completion, production-yield commentary and evidence of recurring volume orders. A sample proves that a customer is evaluating the product; it does not establish commercial revenue or a durable market position.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How often should I update an SK hynix-versus-Samsung comparison?
Revisit it at each quarterly release and whenever either company changes its capital-spending plan or reports a major customer milestone. HBM share, pricing, yields and qualification can change faster than annual reports capture.
Why can a diversified company underperform during an AI-memory boom?
Only part of its consolidated earnings may come from HBM, so strong memory growth can be offset by weaker results elsewhere or by a lower valuation for slower divisions. Diversification reduces dependence on one cycle but can also dilute the market’s response to a successful product.
What valuation information is still needed before choosing between the stocks?
You need same-date prices, market capitalization, enterprise value, share-count treatment and comparable forward estimates for revenue, operating profit and free cash flow. Without that synchronized snapshot, a claim that one stock is cheaper is not reliable.
