The best Sims 4 graphics settings are the ones the game selects for your specific PC or Mac on first launch—not a universal Low or Ultra preset. Start with that automatic baseline, then change one option at a time in the same save and lot. On a laptop or a computer close to EA’s minimum requirements, enable Laptop Mode from the three-dot menu > Game Options > Laptop Mode. If a capable computer still stutters, investigate mods, crowded lots, background applications, drivers, and GPU selection before sacrificing more image quality.

These are practical choices rather than ranked benchmark results. EA has not published a slider-by-slider frame-rate ranking, so the right order depends on your hardware, save, and visual priorities.

Use the settings that The Sims 4 chooses after its first-launch hardware benchmark. EA says that benchmark evaluates a PC or Mac and selects a level; pushing every option above that level can create problems on lower-spec machines. There is therefore no defensible universal “best preset.” A modern desktop may be smooth at the automatic level while a near-minimum laptop may need Laptop Mode.

Record the current selections before changing them. That gives you a known recovery point and lets you distinguish a useful change from a placebo. The official performance guidance is published by The Sims Team.
How do I create a reliable baseline before changing settings?
Compare like with like. A busy apartment, a custom-content-heavy lot, and a quiet empty lot can stress the game very differently, so changing locations at the same time as graphics options makes the result impossible to interpret.
- Write down the current configuration. Note the overall level and every visible graphics option.
- Choose one repeatable scene. Use the same save, lot, camera angle, weather, and approximate number of Sims each time.
- Let the scene settle. Wait for menus, textures, and objects to finish appearing before judging smoothness.
- Change one control. Apply a single lower value, return to the same view, and decide whether the motion is smoother and whether the lost detail is acceptable.
- Keep or undo it. If the image becomes objectionable without a clear benefit, restore that option and test another.
This process is a comparison method, not a promise of a particular frame-rate gain. EA’s published material supports lowering settings near minimum specifications but does not quantify the gain from each individual slider.
Should I turn on Laptop Mode?
Yes, it is the first graphics experiment for a laptop or a computer close to EA’s minimum requirements. EA describes Laptop Mode as an efficiency and frame-rate aid, but it cannot cure every cause of lag and may reduce visual detail.
- Open the three-dot menu in the game.
- Select Game Options.
- Choose Laptop Mode and apply the change.
- Return to the same save and lot used for your baseline.
- Compare Sim faces, clothing, objects, and any custom content with Laptop Mode off.
Keep it enabled if the smoother result is worth the visual reduction. If there is little improvement, turn it back off and investigate mods, lot complexity, applications, drivers, and GPU selection instead of repeatedly lowering image quality. EA’s menu guidance is in its performance article.
Which individual settings should I lower first?
Lower the options that draw large amounts of scene detail while preserving the feature you care about most. 3D Scene Resolution
Try a lower value when the entire scene is expensive to render. The trade-off is a softer image, especially on distant objects and fine edges. If Sims’ faces and clothing matter more than the environment, lower scene resolution before lowering Sim detail.
Reflections
Reflections can be a sensible experiment in rooms with mirrors, glossy surfaces, or many reflective objects. Lowering them changes the appearance of those surfaces while leaving the underlying lot layout intact. A mirror-heavy room is a better comparison scene than an outdoor view with no reflective objects.
Lighting
Lower lighting when indoor scenes, shadows, or numerous light sources coincide with stutter. Expect flatter or less detailed illumination. Check the same room after changing it; outdoor performance may not reveal the cost of indoor lighting.
Visual Effects and post-processing
These controls affect effects layered over the rendered scene. Reduce them if particles, bloom-like effects, or other screen treatments are unimportant to you. The visual change can be more noticeable during special events than during ordinary live mode.
View Distance
A shorter view distance reduces how far detailed objects are drawn. It can help in large outdoor views, but distant buildings and scenery will appear less complete. Restore it if the horizon or neighborhood presentation is more important than a possible smoothness improvement; EA provides no universal FPS figure for this slider.

Edge Smoothing
Edge smoothing reduces jagged outlines. Lowering it may make fences, hair, and roof lines look rougher, but it is an option to test when aliasing quality is less important than responsiveness.

Sims, Objects, and texture options
Sim detail is the priority for players who want clear faces, hair, and clothing. Object detail affects furniture and décor, while uncompressed Sim textures preserve larger texture data at a memory cost. Lower object or texture quality only after deciding which visual elements you are willing to lose.
Do not move every slider at once. Without an official per-control benchmark, a one-change comparison is the only honest way to learn which option matters on your machine.
When should I use V-Sync?
Use V-Sync as a symptom-specific setting. If you see horizontal tearing as the camera moves, EA suggests trying V-Sync On. Do not disable it by default or present it as a guaranteed smoothness or frame-rate switch; the best choice depends on the display and the artifact you are seeing.
Is Memory Boost available on my computer?
Memory Boost is an early-access, PC-only option described by EA. If it appears, open Game Options > Other and choose Automatic, Enable, or Disable. Selecting a choice restarts the game, so save first and expect to relaunch.
Mac players should not assume this menu exists. Because the feature is early access, treat it as an experiment for a memory-related problem, not as a required preset or a guaranteed performance improvement. Availability and behavior can change in later patches; EA’s feature note is the authority for the current build.
Why does The Sims 4 still lag on a good laptop?
Graphics sliders address only rendering. The Sims Team says that both the number of things drawn and the number of interactive objects affect performance. A powerful-looking laptop can still hitch when a save contains an unusually complex lot, many mirrors, routing through doors and stairs, numerous active Sims, or memory-heavy background software.

Test the save and lot, not just the preset
Compare a quiet, uncomplicated lot with the problem location using the same camera movement. If only one lot stutters, reduce clutter, mirrors, and routing complexity before lowering every global setting. If every save behaves the same way, continue with software and hardware checks.

EA says many mods can consume memory and CPU resources. To isolate them, disable mods, start the game, and test the same scene. Exit without saving while custom content is absent: saving a game with missing content can remove that content from the save. Check each creator’s compatibility information before re-enabling items, especially after a game update. Follow EA’s instructions at Mods and The Sims 4 game updates.
Close competing applications
Browsers with many tabs, launchers, recording tools, overlays, and other memory-intensive programs can compete with the game. Close unnecessary applications, then repeat the same save-and-lot comparison. This is a diagnosis step, not a reason to permanently disable security software or essential system services.
Check drivers and the selected GPU
EA’s PC troubleshooting guidance includes checking graphics drivers and confirming that the game uses the dedicated GPU when a system has both integrated and discrete graphics. A game running on the wrong adapter can perform poorly even when the computer has a capable graphics card. Use the operating system’s graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel to verify the assignment, then retest.
What hardware does EA require?
EA lists 4 GB of system RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended for both PC and Mac. Its recommended PC graphics examples include an NVIDIA GTX 650 or AMD Radeon HD 7750 or better with 1 GB of video RAM, along with required free storage. These are compatibility specifications, not a promised frame rate and not proof that a particular retail component will fit your computer.

Read the current EA system requirements for the edition and operating system you use. A requirement page cannot tell you whether a laptop’s RAM is soldered, whether a desktop power supply supports a new GPU, or which component is the bottleneck.

Should I upgrade RAM, a graphics card, or storage?
Upgrade only after identifying a shortfall and confirming compatibility. Settings changes and software diagnosis cost nothing; hardware purchases do not solve every type of stutter.
- RAM: An 8 GB laptop RAM upgrade is relevant only when the computer can be upgraded and has less than EA’s 8 GB recommended total. Check the existing capacity, memory generation, number of slots, supported maximum, and whether the memory is soldered. An “8 GB” module is not automatically the correct part.
- Graphics card: Consider a compatible desktop GPU only when evidence points to a graphics bottleneck and the case, power supply, motherboard, and drivers support the replacement. The named EA GPU examples are requirements guidance, not a universal shopping recommendation.
- SSD: A compatible internal SSD can help when free space or loading is the issue. It should not be marketed as a proven cure for in-game frame-rate drops.
Check the computer’s exact CPU, RAM, GPU, free space, upgrade limits, and operating system before spending money. No single component is a universal fix for mods, complex lots, or background memory pressure.
What did the 2025 updates change?
EA reported publisher figures for its May 27, 2025 patch: up to 22 FPS gained in Laptop Mode, up to 10% faster lot loading, and over 18 MB saved in memory use. - Start at the automatic baseline. Do not raise settings above the game’s first-launch choice on a modest machine.

Can I use these settings on the console versions of The Sims 4?
No. The walkthrough covers the PC and Mac editions because EA’s Laptop Mode, Memory Boost, driver, and dedicated-GPU guidance is written for those platforms. Console hardware and menus require their own support instructions.
Will lowering View Distance definitely increase my FPS?
There is no official, universal FPS number for that slider. Lowering it reduces distant detail, so judge the result in a repeatable outdoor scene and keep it only if the visual compromise is worthwhile.
