Wych Elm Games developed Silver Pines as its debut; Team17 published it. The five-person team worked remotely from Sweden and Norway. Its 2.5D presentation combines rotoscoped character animation with photo-textured environments and a 3D simulation that gives the side-scrolling town depth. Instead of moving only across a flat corridor, Walker can travel into the scene as well as east and west, from streets into rooms and deeper locations.
Hollow Knight: exploration in a fallen kingdom
Hollow Knight puts a silent, insect-like warrior known as the Knight in Hallownest, a fallen underground kingdom afflicted by a supernatural Infection. Its hand-drawn 2D world is linked by caverns, settlements, and routes that open as the Knight gains movement abilities. Rather than a detective plot, its story is delivered through the places, characters, and mysteries scattered throughout the kingdom.
Team Cherry, an Australian studio based in Adelaide, developed and published the game. It began on Windows in 2017 and later reached Linux and macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Choose Hollow Knight for quiet melancholy and environmental storytelling
Hollow Knight’s mood is built from contrast: empty spaces, small pockets of safety, and a kingdom whose history the player pieces together. Christopher Larkin’s score centers on piano and viola, as he described in a 2017 interview. The game’s benches, wandering mapmaker, and isolated settlements give exploration a rhythm that differs from Silver Pines’ investigation and supply management.
If you want jump scares or the feeling of being hunted through a survival-horror scenario, Hollow Knight is not a substitute for that experience. Its darkness is atmospheric and tragic, but its main demand is learning combat and uncovering the world.

Death has a recoverable cost: the Knight leaves a Shade and loses carried Geo, while Soul capacity is reduced until that Shade is defeated. The system adds risk to exploration without making every mistake permanent. Players seeking a harsher challenge can unlock Steel Soul, a permadeath mode. That option is not required to finish the regular game.
How large are the worlds, and how long do the games take?
Silver Pines is the shorter, more bounded experience: published estimates cluster around 10–17 hours, depending on difficulty and completion goals. Hollow Knight is the larger commitment, described by critics as absorbing for dozens of hours, before considering its optional boss content. Silver Pines’ town is compact but layered

Silver Pines is a stronger fit if you want
