Yes—if you want a survival-horror investigation with Metroidvania progression. Silver Pines makes exploration, locked paths and puzzles relatively easy to understand, but it is not an easy game in every respect. Limited inventory space, scarce ammunition and medicine, challenging monsters, bosses and deliberate backtracking create pressure that a relaxed first Metroidvania may not. It is best suited to newcomers who enjoy atmosphere, mystery and methodical exploration, and less suited to players seeking forgiving combat or a platforming-focused introduction to the genre.
What is Silver Pines?
Silver Pines is a survival-horror Metroidvania from Wych Elm, published by Team17. It launched on PC and consoles on October 8, 2026. You play private investigator Red Walker, who arrives in the half-abandoned town of Silver Pines while investigating the disappearance of musician Eddie Velvet.
The game combines a connected map with survival-horror systems. You search buildings and outdoor areas for clues, ammunition, medicine, upgrades and tools. Locked doors, hidden paths and environmental puzzles prevent immediate access to parts of the town. As you obtain keys and equipment, those barriers become possible to overcome, opening new routes and encouraging you to return to earlier locations.

Steam similarly warns that inventory space is limited and that every bullet, bottle of medicine and upgrade matters. That combination is central to the beginner question: the map communicates its logic clearly, while the consequences of mistakes can still be severe.

Is Silver Pines easy for beginners?
It is approachable rather than easy. A first-time Metroidvania player can generally understand where progress is blocked and what kind of discovery may eventually open the route. However, learning to manage danger, ammunition, healing items and inventory space is a separate challenge from learning the map.
Push Square’s 8/10 review reports that unreachable locations are clearly signposted. When you encounter a door, gap or other obstruction that cannot yet be handled, the game usually makes it apparent that the location is intended for a later visit. That reduces one of the most common beginner frustrations: wandering without knowing whether you missed a solution or simply lack the required item.
The same review says the puzzles are fairly hands-off but usually provide enough information to start working out keypad and safe combinations. You are expected to pay attention and connect clues, but the game does not appear to rely on opaque trial and error for every solution.
The difficulty comes when that readable exploration is combined with survival-horror pressure. Finding the correct route does not guarantee a safe route, and spending resources to reach one objective can make the next encounter harder. The fairest summary is that Silver Pines is beginner-friendly in communication, not beginner-easy in survival systems.
Why does the exploration work for a new Metroidvania player?
Blocked routes are understandable
Metroidvanias often ask you to remember inaccessible locations and return after gaining an ability. Silver Pines makes that expectation relatively explicit. Doors, paths and places beyond your current tools tend to read as unfinished business rather than random dead ends, giving a newcomer a reason to mark them mentally and move on.
Tools have investigative uses
GamesRadar emphasizes that item unlocks open new areas and that tools can serve multiple purposes. This makes progression feel like investigating a town rather than mastering a long sequence of precision jumps. A new item can change how you interpret a room, a locked route or a previously overlooked clue.

Puzzles reward observation
The puzzle design supports players who examine their surroundings carefully. Information for combinations and mechanisms is generally present without automatically handing over the answer. That is a useful introduction to the genre’s habit of making the environment itself part of the solution.
The mystery provides momentum
Reviews from Push Square and GamesRadar identify the atmosphere, visual style and central mystery as major strengths. A compelling investigation can keep a newcomer engaged while they learn map backtracking and item-based progression. You are not exploring an abstract maze; you are trying to understand what happened in a specific town and why its inhabitants and monsters behave as they do.
What makes Silver Pines difficult?
Resources are limited
Steam’s description specifically calls out limited inventory space and the importance of bullets, medicine and upgrades. You cannot treat every item as disposable. A player accustomed to carrying everything or using ammunition whenever an enemy appears may need to change habits quickly.
Inventory management also creates opportunity costs. Carrying one item may mean leaving another behind, and using a healing item now may reduce your margin for a later fight. The game therefore tests planning as much as reflexes.
Combat is a real part of the game
Silver Pines is not a peaceful exploration game with occasional enemies. Its official description highlights challenging monsters and hulking bosses, while Team17 presents fighting or avoiding horrors as a central choice. Avoidance can conserve resources, but it requires judging whether a hostile encounter can be bypassed safely. Fighting may clear a route, but ammunition and healing are finite.
Bosses can be demanding
Push Square praises the broader experience but identifies tedious boss fights as a notable weakness. This matters for beginners because a clear map and readable puzzle do not necessarily make every combat encounter forgiving. Expect the game’s difficulty curve to feel uneven if you are comfortable with exploration but inexperienced with survival-horror bosses.

Backtracking is part of the design
New tools make previously inaccessible areas reachable, so revisiting earlier sections is not optional busywork; it is how the map expands. GamesRadar describes backtracking as a core part of the map and inventory design. Players who enjoy checking old routes after every major upgrade will find that structure rewarding. Players who want a linear route may find it tiring.
Is Silver Pines more horror or more Metroidvania?
It is a hybrid, with survival horror shaping the moment-to-moment pressure and Metroidvania structure organizing the map. Insider Gaming describes it as a typical 2.5D Metroidvania in important respects, while NookGaming’s review characterizes much of the experience as a natural 2D survival-horror adventure, with stronger item-gated exploration and backtracking later.
That distinction helps set expectations. Silver Pines is not primarily a precision-platforming showcase. Its progression is driven by investigation, locked doors, tools, combat choices and resource decisions. If your mental model of a Metroidvania is fast movement through demanding jumping challenges, this game may feel gentler in traversal but harsher in survival management.

Do I need to know Metroidvanias before playing Silver Pines?
No. The game’s structure can teach the basic genre habits as you play: recognize blocked routes, remember them, find a tool or key, and return. You do not need prior knowledge of a particular franchise or a glossary of Metroidvania terms.
You will have an easier start if you are comfortable with three ideas:
- A locked path is often a future objective, not a puzzle you must solve immediately.
- Exploration may require returning to an earlier room after finding a new item.
- Resource decisions can matter more than defeating every enemy.
If those ideas sound interesting, the lack of prior genre experience should not be a barrier. If you strongly dislike revisiting areas, conserving ammunition or making decisions about limited inventory space, the game may feel demanding even if its navigation is clear.

How should a beginner approach the first hours?
Use a methodical approach rather than trying to clear every room immediately. The game’s design rewards remembering possibilities and preserving options.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Investigate before spending resources. Search rooms for clues, supplies and routes before committing to a fight or using a healing item.
- Notice every blocked path. When a door, gap or hidden route cannot be opened, remember its location and the type of obstacle involved.
- Read environmental clues carefully. Keypad and safe puzzles generally provide enough information to begin solving them, so inspect nearby details before guessing.
- Decide whether combat is necessary. The official premise allows fighting or avoiding horrors. Avoiding a threat can preserve ammunition, while fighting may make a route safer; choose according to the resources you have.
- Treat inventory space as a strategic limit. Carry items that support your immediate objective, but do not assume every object can be kept indefinitely.
- Revisit earlier areas after major discoveries. A newly acquired tool may open more than one route, and multiple uses are part of the progression design.
- Use a lower difficulty if pressure is blocking progress. Insider Gaming reports that lower difficulty levels can shorten the path through the game. They may make progression easier or faster, but they do not change the basic need to explore, backtrack and manage supplies.
How much backtracking is in Silver Pines?
Backtracking is moderate early on and becomes more prominent as item-gated exploration develops. The town is designed around routes that acquire new meaning when you obtain the right tool or key. You may pass a locked door, discover the necessary item elsewhere and then return to make progress.
This is less frustrating when you treat blocked locations as a checklist of future opportunities rather than unfinished mistakes. It becomes more demanding when several routes open at once and your inventory is already constrained. Players who enjoy planning an efficient loop through a familiar area will likely appreciate the structure; players who expect constant forward movement may not.
Is the combat too difficult for a first Metroidvania?
It can be, especially if you are new to both Metroidvanias and survival horror. The game expects you to evaluate encounters, conserve supplies and handle bosses, rather than simply attack everything until it falls. Difficulty settings can help you move through the game more quickly, but the evidence does not support treating them as a complete removal of resource pressure or backtracking.
That does not make the game unsuitable. It means your reason for choosing it matters. A newcomer who enjoys tense encounters and is willing to retreat, search and conserve can learn the combat alongside the map. Someone looking for a gentle introduction with abundant healing and little risk should start elsewhere.
How long is Silver Pines, and where can I play it?
Insider Gaming estimates approximately 10–14 hours, depending on play speed. That range is a published estimate, not a guarantee: puzzle-solving pace, exploration habits, combat choices and optional revisits can change the total.

| You dislike revisiting earlier areas | Weak fit | Backtracking becomes a central part of item-gated progression. |
Final beginner verdict
Silver Pines is a reasonable first Metroidvania for players who want atmospheric investigation, understandable locked-door progression and puzzles that reward attention. It is not the best first choice for someone seeking a relaxed, low-combat tutorial to the genre.
The most accurate one-sentence verdict is: Silver Pines is beginner-friendly in how it communicates exploration, but not beginner-easy in how it manages danger and resources. If that balance matches your tastes, its survival-horror setting can make the usual Metroidvania loop feel purposeful rather than abstract.

Does choosing a lower difficulty remove the need to manage resources?
No. Lower difficulty can make the route through the game easier or faster, according to Insider Gaming, but the core design still revolves around searching, limited inventory space, item-gated routes and decisions about fighting or avoiding monsters.
Is Silver Pines a good choice for someone who prefers puzzles to combat?
It can be, provided that player accepts combat as part of the experience. The puzzles and clues are accessible, but challenging monsters and bosses remain important obstacles rather than optional decoration.
Will I understand where to go next without a Metroidvania map guide?
The available reviews indicate that inaccessible locations are usually signposted, so you can recognize when a route is intended for later. You still need to remember those locations and connect new tools with old obstacles yourself.
Is the 10–14-hour estimate fixed for every player?
No. Insider Gaming’s estimate varies with play speed. Careful exploration, puzzle-solving time, combat decisions and the amount of backtracking you do can all move your personal finish time outside that range.
