For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, uninstalling McAfee is reasonable if they do not use its paid features or want its subscription to renew. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is included with Windows and should reactivate after a compatible third-party antivirus is removed. Verify that change in Windows Security instead of assuming it happened.
Keeping McAfee is also defensible. AV-TEST gave McAfee Total Protection 1.35 full marks for protection, performance, and usability in its January-February 2026 Windows 11 test. The practical choice depends on whether those tested capabilities and McAfee’s bundled features justify your subscription. Removing the app does not cancel billing or auto-renewal; those are separate steps.
Should you uninstall McAfee?
Uninstall McAfee when you do not need its paid extras, multi-device coverage, account features, or a separately managed security suite. Keep it when those benefits are useful and you are satisfied with the subscription terms. Do not keep two products doing simultaneous real-time antivirus scanning: Microsoft recommends choosing one real-time provider because competing products can cause errors and affect performance.

Uninstall McAfee if these statements fit
- You use only the protection built into Windows and do not use McAfee-specific features.
- You want to stop paying for a subscription or avoid an automatic renewal.
- You prefer one simpler security setup rather than managing two security products.
- McAfee’s notifications, startup activity, or scans interfere with how you use the PC, and you are prepared to verify Defender afterward.
Keep McAfee if these statements fit
- You actively use features included with your plan and would otherwise need to replace them.
- You manage protection for several devices through one McAfee account.
- You want a paid suite that has recent independent test evidence and are comfortable checking the renewal price and term.
- Your employer, school, household administrator, or support arrangement requires that product.
Neither choice is automatically safer. The important control is having one maintained, real-time antivirus provider enabled after the decision.

For a Windows 10 or 11 PC, do not assume the operating-system version alone settles the question. Defender is built into both versions, while the cited AV-TEST result specifically covers McAfee Total Protection 1.35 on Windows 11. It is useful evidence that McAfee performed well in that particular test, but it is not a direct head-to-head comparison with Defender and does not establish identical results on Windows 10 or every McAfee product.
How well does McAfee protect a Windows PC?
McAfee is technically capable in the latest independent result cited here. AV-TEST tested McAfee Total Protection version 1.35 on Windows 11 in January and February 2026, using default settings, current publicly available software, and realistic malware scenarios.
| AV-TEST category | McAfee Total Protection 1.35 result | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | 6.0/6.0 | Full marks in that test round, including monthly real-world malware measures of 99.7% and 100%. |
| Performance | 6.0/6.0 | No measured performance penalty large enough to reduce the score under AV-TEST’s conditions. |
| Usability | 6.0/6.0 | Full marks for the test’s usability criteria, including handling of legitimate software and alerts. |
AV-TEST’s manufacturer index also shows repeated 6/6 scores for protection, performance, and usability in 2025-2026 rounds. That supports describing McAfee as a strong tested product, but it does not prove that every McAfee plan, operating system, device, setting, or personal experience will be identical. A laboratory score is evidence of capability under stated conditions, not a guarantee that a particular subscription is good value for you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe protection percentages are measurements from two monthly real-world malware tests, not a promise that every threat will be blocked. Likewise, the performance and usability marks describe the evaluation criteria and conditions used in that round. Your installed version may change, your computer may run a different workload, and your chosen plan may not match the tested product. Use the score as one input alongside your actual feature use, device coverage, and renewal terms—not as a substitute for checking those things.
Repeated top results during 2025-2026 give more context than a single score: McAfee appeared with full marks across the three categories in multiple rounds. Even so, a score cannot tell you whether you will use a particular bundled feature, whether the subscription fits your budget, or whether a third party is managing your billing. Those are personal and plan-specific decisions.
What is the difference between McAfee and Microsoft Defender?
Defender is included with Windows 10 and Windows 11 and is maintained through Windows security updates. McAfee is a separately licensed suite whose value comes from its plan features, account management, and any device coverage you use in addition to baseline antivirus protection.
| Decision factor | McAfee | Microsoft Defender Antivirus |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Requires an installed McAfee product and an applicable plan. | Built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. |
| Cost model | Subscription-based; introductory offers, renewal terms, geography, and billing channel change the price. | Included with a valid Windows installation; no separate antivirus subscription is required. |
| Independent evidence cited here | McAfee Total Protection 1.35 scored 6.0/6.0 in protection, performance, and usability in AV-TEST’s January-February 2026 Windows 11 round. | This article does not assign Defender a comparable score because the cited evidence is for McAfee. |
| Device coverage and extras | Depends on the exact plan and may be useful for several devices or McAfee-specific features. | Provides Windows’ built-in antivirus and security controls; features beyond that depend on Windows and your Microsoft account. |
| Renewal management | May auto-renew and must be cancelled through the correct billing account. | No separate McAfee-style antivirus renewal. |
There is no authoritative universal current McAfee price to quote: offers vary by introductory promotion, renewal term, country, and whether McAfee, a retailer, an app store, an internet provider, or a device maker bills you. Compare the exact plan shown in your account rather than a price seen in an advertisement.

When comparing cost, look beyond the first payment. Check the subscription’s current term, number of covered devices, renewal setting, and the amount and timing of the next charge shown by the biller. If you would replace McAfee features with separate products, include those costs in your comparison. If you do not use the extras, a subscription may not be worth renewing simply because it came preinstalled or was bundled with another purchase.
Defender’s inclusion with Windows makes it a practical option for someone who wants built-in antivirus without a separate McAfee subscription. That does not mean the two products have identical features or test results. The cited figures establish McAfee’s performance in AV-TEST’s stated round; they do not rank it against Defender or prove that every user should choose one over the other.
Will Windows Defender turn on when you remove McAfee?
Microsoft documents that Defender Antivirus is disabled while a compatible third-party antivirus is active and turns back on automatically after that antivirus is uninstalled. Treat that as an expected behavior to verify, not as a reason to skip the check.
- Save your work and uninstall McAfee using the procedure below.
- Restart Windows when the uninstall program requests it. A restart lets security services and drivers reload cleanly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Check the displayed security provider and confirm that Microsoft Defender is active.
- Confirm that Real-time protection is on. Also open the firewall area and verify that Windows Firewall is enabled.
- Run a Defender scan if the computer spent any time without an active real-time provider during the changeover.
If Windows Security still reports that no antivirus is active, do not install another product at random or run multiple real-time products together. Reboot once more, check that McAfee is no longer listed as the active provider, and use Microsoft or McAfee support if the provider status does not settle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The status check matters because uninstalling McAfee removes its protection. Until Windows Security confirms that Defender is active and real-time protection is on, do not treat the computer as protected merely because the McAfee icon disappeared. If the computer was without an active provider during the change, run a Defender scan after confirming it is enabled.
How do you remove McAfee completely from Windows?
Use Windows’ normal uninstall process first. McAfee specifically advises against manually deleting leftover folders; if files remain, note their names and contact McAfee customer service rather than removing directories yourself.
Standard Windows 11 method
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the McAfee product in the list, select its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Follow McAfee’s removal prompts. The prompts may identify more than one McAfee component; remove the components you no longer use.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not make the restart appear mandatory.
Windows 10 Settings method
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the McAfee entry and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the McAfee wizard and restart Windows.
Start-menu route
You can also open Start > All apps, locate the McAfee folder or app entry, and choose its uninstall command. Windows may redirect you to the same Apps page or launch McAfee’s removal wizard.

If the normal uninstall fails
- Restart Windows and try the standard uninstall once more.
- Use McAfee’s official Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool when the normal method cannot remove the product.
- Follow MCPR’s prompts to completion and restart when instructed.
- Return to Windows Security and verify the active provider and real-time protection.
MCPR is a recovery route for a failed uninstall, not a reason to delete McAfee folders manually. Do not assume that a missing shortcut means every driver and service has been removed; the provider check after reboot is the meaningful safety check.

Before starting, close open applications and save your work, since the removal process may ask you to restart. If you see more than one McAfee entry, read each prompt rather than deleting files or folders yourself. McAfee’s supported sequence is to use the standard Windows uninstall flow, follow the prompts, and restart; MCPR is the fallback when that method fails.
Does uninstalling McAfee cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling the application and cancelling a paid subscription are separate actions. McAfee states that removing the app does not automatically cancel a paid subscription, and protection is removed when the app is uninstalled.
Turn off McAfee auto-renewal
- Sign in to My Account using the account that owns the subscription.
- Open Subscriptions.
- Choose Cancel, then select Cancel Auto-Renewal.
- Complete the confirmation screens and save the confirmation message or number.
McAfee advises turning off auto-renewal more than 30 days before the term expires to avoid the next charge. Disabling renewal does not end the already-paid term; access remains available through its stated expiry date.
When McAfee is not the biller
If a retailer, app store, internet provider, or computer manufacturer charged you, that company controls the renewal record. Find the subscription in that provider’s account and follow its cancellation process. Removing McAfee from Windows cannot change a contract held elsewhere.

Why might McAfee slow down your computer?
Antivirus software works by inspecting files, downloads, applications, and other activity, so scans can consume processor time, memory, storage activity, and battery. Startup services, scheduled scans, browser protections, and notifications can also make a system feel busier. That does not contradict AV-TEST’s 6.0/6.0 performance score: the lab score reflects a defined Windows 11 test environment, while your PC may have different hardware, storage, workloads, settings, and background software.

Check whether the complaint is really McAfee
- Open Windows Task Manager and observe CPU, memory, and disk usage while the slowdown occurs.
- Note whether the spike happens during a scan, a large download, software installation, or Windows Update.
- Check whether both McAfee and Defender appear to be providing real-time protection. Running competing scanners can create extra work and conflicts.
- Look for low free storage, too many startup applications, or an outdated Windows build before blaming one security product.
If McAfee is the active product and its resource use is unacceptable, either adjust its available scan scheduling controls or remove it and verify Defender. Do not disable real-time protection indefinitely just to improve responsiveness.
Try to connect the slowdown to a specific time or task instead of relying on a general impression. A temporary scan or an update can coincide with lag without proving that McAfee is the cause. Task Manager can show whether CPU, memory, or disk activity rises at the same time; if the cause remains unclear, compare the behavior after a restart and check which antivirus provider is active. Avoid leaving real-time protection disabled as a test, since that would leave a security gap.

| Symptom | Likely issue | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| A renewal charge appears after uninstalling | The app was removed but auto-renewal was still enabled. | Cancel renewal in the correct billing account; uninstalling does not change billing. |
| Windows Security says no provider is active | The transition has not completed or a component remains registered. | Restart, check Virus & threat protection again, and seek official support if the status persists. |
| McAfee uninstall stops or shows an error | The normal Windows removal path failed. | Use McAfee’s MCPR tool, then restart and verify the provider. |
| Old McAfee folders remain | Some files may be leftover components rather than an active antivirus. | Do not manually delete them; record the folder details and contact McAfee customer service. |
| The PC is slower after removal | Another startup task, update, scan, or duplicate security service may be responsible. | Check Task Manager and Windows Security before installing another real-time antivirus. |
Two mistakes are especially easy to make: assuming that uninstalling stops billing, and assuming the PC is protected because the uninstall finished. Handle the account cancellation separately, then check Windows Security after restarting. If the standard removal fails, use McAfee’s own MCPR utility rather than third-party cleanup or manual deletion; if provider status or leftover components remain unclear, seek official support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which choice is right for you?
Use this short decision framework before changing anything:
- Identify what you pay for. Open your McAfee account and record the product name, device count, expiry date, renewal setting, and billing company.
- List features you actually use. If the answer is none beyond basic antivirus, Defender may provide the simpler setup. If you rely on McAfee’s plan features or multi-device management, include the cost of replacing those benefits.
- Compare renewal terms, not just today’s offer. Introductory and renewal prices can differ, and regional or third-party billing can change the terms.
- Choose one real-time provider. Keeping McAfee means let it remain the active product. Removing it means confirm Defender after reboot.
- Separate software removal from account cancellation. Perform both actions when you want both the application gone and future billing stopped.
The evidence supports two honest conclusions. McAfee is not a product you must remove because it is inherently ineffective: its cited 2026 AV-TEST round awarded full marks in all three categories. It is also not a product every Windows user must keep: Defender is built into Windows, and a user who does not need McAfee’s paid features may reasonably prefer the included protection and a simpler subscription-free arrangement.
If you decide to keep McAfee, review the plan you actually have—not just the product name—and make sure its features and device coverage match how you use it. If you decide to remove it, plan the sequence: check the billing channel, turn off auto-renewal if desired, uninstall using Windows, restart, and verify Defender and Windows Firewall. Neither path requires guessing at a universal price or treating a test score as a personal guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I uninstall McAfee without deleting my documents and photos?
The Windows uninstall process targets the McAfee application and its components, not ordinary personal files. Close McAfee and other open programs first, and never use manual folder deletion as a substitute for the supported uninstall process.

How can I tell whether a renewal was cancelled successfully?
Sign back in to the account that handled payment and check the subscription status for an auto-renewal-disabled or similar confirmation. Keep the confirmation email or reference number, especially when the subscription was purchased through an intermediary.
What should I do if McAfee keeps appearing after I used MCPR?
Restart once more and inspect Windows Security’s listed provider rather than relying on a shortcut or folder name. If McAfee remains registered or the removal tool reports failure, provide the MCPR result and any remaining component names to McAfee support.
Is a full AV-TEST score a guarantee that McAfee will never slow my PC?
No. The January-February 2026 result is a controlled Windows 11 evaluation of McAfee Total Protection 1.35. Your hardware, workload, scan timing, Windows configuration, and other background software can produce a different experience.
Should I uninstall McAfee from Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It depends on whether you use the paid features, device coverage, or account management in your plan and whether the subscription terms work for you. Defender is built into both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The cited McAfee AV-TEST result is specifically for Windows 11, so it should not be treated as a direct comparison of the products or as a guarantee for every system.
Will Microsoft Defender turn on after I remove McAfee?
Microsoft says Defender Antivirus should turn back on automatically after a compatible third-party antivirus is uninstalled. Restart the PC, open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, and confirm Defender is the active provider and Real-time protection is on.
Does uninstalling McAfee cancel my subscription or stop the next charge?
No. App removal and subscription cancellation are separate. Turn off auto-renewal in McAfee My Account under Subscriptions, or contact the retailer, app store, internet provider, or device maker that bills you. McAfee advises cancelling more than 30 days before the term expires to avoid the next charge.
Is McAfee worth keeping if I already have Defender?
Keeping McAfee may make sense if you use its plan features or multi-device coverage and accept the renewal terms. If you do not use those extras, you may prefer the built-in Windows protection. Choose one real-time antivirus provider rather than running both products’ real-time scanning at once.
Why is McAfee slowing down my computer?
Scans and other antivirus activity can coincide with higher CPU, memory, or disk use, but lag can also have another cause. Use Task Manager while the slowdown happens, note whether it aligns with scans or updates, and check for competing real-time protection. AV-TEST’s performance score measures a defined test environment, not every PC.
Is there one current McAfee price I can use to decide?
No universal current price is established here. Offers can vary by introductory promotion, renewal term, country, and billing channel. Check the exact product, device count, next charge, and renewal terms in the account or provider that bills you.
The Bottom Line
McAfee earned full marks in AV-TEST’s January-February 2026 Windows 11 evaluation, so uninstalling it is not necessary on the grounds that it failed that test. But if you do not use its paid features or multi-device coverage, removing it and relying on built-in Defender may be a reasonable choice. Uninstalling does not stop billing: cancel auto-renewal separately, restart, and verify in Windows Security that Defender and real-time protection are active.
