Neither Sharkly nor Jira is universally better for AI development teams. Sharkly’s central proposition is to make coding agents assignable participants in a shared work system, with task context, execution status, and results associated with work items. Jira is a broad project and work-tracking platform that now also offers AI features and ways to assign work to coding agents. The better fit depends on how your team wants agents to execute work, what governance and project-management capabilities it needs, and whether it is prepared to change or connect its current system of record.
For a team trying an agent-first execution loop, Sharkly may be worth piloting on a contained workflow. For a team that relies on Jira’s existing workflows, administration, integrations, and Atlassian context, extending Jira may be the more practical starting point. Compare the systems using representative work, not feature labels or headline subscription prices.
What is the real difference between Sharkly and Jira?
The main distinction is how each product positions AI agents in the work cycle—not whether it can organize projects and tasks. Both address project tracking and team planning. Sharkly centers its product proposition on assigning work to agents and relating their execution and results to a team’s work items. Jira is a wider work-management platform whose AI and agent capabilities sit alongside established planning, workflow, automation, and administration features.

That distinction is about product approach, not a proven difference in delivery quality. Sharkly’s descriptions of its workflow are vendor claims, and Atlassian’s descriptions of Jira’s features are also vendor material. The available evidence does not establish that either tool produces better software, faster delivery, or lower total cost for a typical team.

The practical question is whether your team wants a system organized around agent execution or a familiar work-management platform that can incorporate AI and agents. Consider the actual agent, runtime, review, permissions, and reporting workflow your developers need—not just whether a product advertises “AI.”
How does Sharkly connect agents to development work?
Sharkly describes a workflow in which a team connects a computer or runtime, plans work on a board, assigns an agent, and reviews the returned result on the ticket. Its product materials list shared agents, crews, skills, and connections to coding runtimes such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. The intended benefit is to keep assignment and execution visible in the same work context rather than treating an agent session as separate from project tracking.
Sharkly also describes isolated worktrees and a human review before merge. These are product descriptions, not independently verified findings about code quality, how many tasks can run concurrently, or delivery outcomes. Before adopting the workflow, establish which runtimes your organization permits, what repository and environment access an agent receives, and how a developer inspects and accepts its work.
What to verify in a representative task
- What task details, linked issues, and other context the agent can see.
- Where the agent executes, and whether that environment meets your security and infrastructure requirements.
- How the work item shows status, blockers, and output while execution is underway.
- How a developer reviews changes and decides whether to merge them.
- What happens when an agent fails, needs clarification, or produces work that must be redone.
Sharkly’s adoption guidance describes starting with one repeatable task while retaining the team’s existing coordination, then expanding only if the workflow proves useful. That is a sensible way to test the product proposition without assuming that the entire team must migrate at once.
Does Jira already have AI and coding agents?
Yes. It is inaccurate to describe Jira as having no AI or agent capabilities. Atlassian says paid Jira plans include Rovo Search, Chat, and Agents, and its support materials describe AI assistance for work-item search, writing, summaries, automation, duplicate detection, related work, and suggested fields.

Atlassian describes configurable Rovo agents that can be reached through chat, automation rules, editing workflows, and Studio. When configured and permitted, agents can take actions such as creating or editing Jira work items. Separately, Atlassian’s AI-native development page describes assigning work items to coding agents—including Claude, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and its native Jira Coding Agent—and reviewing agent activity and session history.
These capabilities do not mean every Jira tenant has the same agents, controls, or entitlements. Plan, organization settings, geography, and feature rollout can affect availability. Check the capabilities and administrative controls in your own tenant before choosing based on a feature listed in Atlassian’s product materials.
Jira’s AI is broader than coding
Some Jira AI functions support everyday work-item tasks—finding information, drafting or editing content, summarizing items, and assisting with automation. Those are different from delegating code changes to an agent. When evaluating Jira, separate the question “Can it help with project work?” from “Can our approved coding agent execute this development task in our required environment, and can we review what it did?”
Which platform better fits your team’s workflow?
Choose based on your operating model: how work is planned, where agents run, what they can access, who reviews output, and which systems must remain connected. The following decision points are more useful than treating the comparison as a feature-count contest.
Agent execution and runtime
List the coding agents your developers are allowed to use and the environments in which they may run. Then confirm that the product supports the specific execution loop you need: task assignment, context transfer, progress visibility, blocker handling, and a reviewable result. A runtime name in a product description is not by itself evidence that your exact setup or policies are supported.

Context, audit, and human review
Determine what context an agent receives and what remains visible to the team afterward. Ask whether reviewers can connect an agent’s activity and output to the originating work item, and whether the team can see enough to assess the result. Define who is accountable for the final decision; agent activity does not remove the need for human review and responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProject-management depth and organizational fit
Inventory the workflows that your team cannot afford to lose: customized states, permissions, cross-team planning, reporting, backlog and sprint practices, and integrations already in use. Jira may be the more natural choice when those workflows and existing Atlassian context are central. A team considering Sharkly should verify that its planning and administrative needs are covered before making it the primary system.
Governance and operational readiness
Check runtime and hosting requirements, organization rules for agent access, credential handling, approval boundaries, and administrative controls. In Jira, confirm which AI and agent features are enabled and what actions administrators permit. In Sharkly, validate the proposed runtime connection and permission scope against your organization’s policy. Do not treat a vendor’s description of a control as a substitute for confirming how your own environment is configured.

Sharkly says model usage remains with the coding plan or API account connected to the Computer/Runtime. That means the Sharkly subscription figure alone does not establish the cost of agent work. For Jira, likewise include any external agent service or integration charges your chosen workflow requires. Compare the same team size, billing period, workload, runtime, AI allowances, and administrative effort before concluding that one option is cheaper.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you connect Jira to Sharkly without moving everything?
Sharkly’s documentation says it supports Jira Cloud and Jira Server/Data Center integration and distinguishes importing existing work from ongoing synchronization. Connecting Jira does not itself start an import or sync. The configuration choices matter: historical data, fields, permissions, sync direction, and status mappings need to be decided before relying on the connection.
Import and sync are different operations
An import copies existing data, including history where supported. Sync keeps selected project changes connected; sync alone does not bring in historical data. Sharkly documents an import followed by sync as an option, along with issue and epic links, status mappings, and directions including bidirectional and Jira-to-Sharkly.
Sharkly’s documentation says one Jira project can have one active Sharkly Space link, while multiple Jira projects can link to one Space. These constraints are relevant when deciding how to structure a pilot or connect multiple teams.
A low-risk integration pilot
- Choose one project and a representative set of issues. Include the types of work your team actually expects to plan or delegate, rather than selecting only easy examples.
- Decide whether history is required. If past work must be available, plan an import; do not expect sync alone to copy the historical record.
- Map the work model. Confirm status mappings, issue and epic relationships, and which changes should flow in each direction.
- Review access and credentials. Confirm required permissions and any webhook permissions with your Jira administrator. Sharkly says token material is encrypted at rest and recommends granting only needed Jira permissions and rotating credentials under the organization’s security policy.
- Check network access. If Jira is on a private network, determine whether the documented proxy conditions apply before assuming the services can communicate.
- Validate behavior before expanding. Check that the selected issues and changes appear as intended, that the configured sync direction matches the team’s expectations, and that failures have a clear owner and recovery path.
These integration details come from Sharkly’s own documentation; confirm the current instructions and requirements for your deployment before connecting production work.

How should an AI development team run a fair pilot?
Use a small pilot to answer the questions a feature list cannot: whether agents fit your workflow, whether review is manageable, and what the real operating cost looks like. Keep the comparison grounded in the same kinds of work and the team’s own systems.
- Select representative tasks. Include repeatable tasks as well as work that needs clarification or coordination. Avoid judging a workflow from a single unusually simple success.
- Define the baseline. Record how the team currently assigns, executes, reviews, and closes similar work, including time spent by developers and administrators.
- Use an agreed review standard. Decide in advance what counts as acceptable output, how rework is recorded, and when an agent result must be rejected or escalated.
- Track operational measures. Compare cycle time, reviewer effort, agent failure and rework, administration overhead, and cost. Record the work context and review standard alongside the results.
- Include governance in the test. Verify permissions, runtime access, credentials, approvals, and visibility of agent activity using the organization’s actual policies.
- Make an adoption decision. Expand only if the workflow produces useful results without creating unacceptable review burden, operational risk, or migration friction.
There is no independent head-to-head benchmark or comparable total-cost analysis in the available evidence. A pilot is therefore the appropriate way to test local fit; vendor descriptions and published plan prices cannot substitute for your team’s own results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Atlassian’s 44% agent-output figure mean Jira is better than Sharkly?
No. Atlassian presents 44% better agent output and 48% less token usage as findings from its Engineering Productivity Study, 2026. Those are Atlassian-published study figures, not a Sharkly-versus-Jira result, and they should not be read as an independent comparison.
