Verdict: The Shark BreatheClear with NeverChange6 (HP162 in the US, HP162UK in the UK) is a good fit if you want an air purifier that explains air quality on its own display, adjusts itself automatically and avoids routine filter purchases. Shark says its filter can last up to six years, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified endurance result. The trade-off is equally clear: there is no app, Wi-Fi, remote control or smart-home integration.
T3’s hands-on review found the sensors reacted quickly, the colour-coded display was easy to understand and Auto mode required very little attention. This review explains what those features mean in daily use, how the coverage figures differ between US and UK specifications, what setup involves and when an app-free purifier is the wrong choice.
What are the Shark BreatheClear NeverChange6 and HP162?
The BreatheClear with NeverChange6 is Shark’s low-maintenance air purifier built around on-device controls. The US product is model HP162 and is sold as the BreatheClear with NeverChange; the UK version is model HP162UK and uses the NeverChange6 name. The hardware naming differs by market, so check the model number on the retailer or product box before ordering replacement parts or support.

Its central idea is simplicity. A high-resolution display shows air-quality information on the purifier itself, while built-in sensors continually assess conditions and change fan power automatically. You do not need to create an account, install a phone application or connect the machine to Wi-Fi to use its core functions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shark describes readings for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particles and environmental conditions. Those categories help you see that air quality has changed, but they are not a laboratory analysis identifying a particular chemical, allergen or microorganism.
Is the BreatheClear NeverChange6 worth buying?
It is worth considering when your priority is low effort rather than connected-home control. Auto mode, fast sensor response and a readable display make it practical to leave running, and the long-life filter is intended to remove the most annoying part of purifier ownership: frequent filter orders and replacements.
Choose another type of purifier if remote operation, historical charts, voice assistants or smart-home routines are essential. T3 specifically noted that the NeverChange6 cannot provide app-based insights, remote controls or wider automation, and Shark removed the Odour Neutraliser Technology used on the previous NeverChange 5.

|---|---|---|
| Simple daily operation | Strong: controls and air-quality feedback are on the unit, with an automatic mode. | You must be in the room to change settings or read the display. |
| Low maintenance | Strong on paper: Shark claims up to six years without a filter change. | The six-year figure is not an independent endurance test, and the exact filter cost after that period is not stated. |
| Room coverage | US listing says up to 750 sq. ft.; UK listing gives two air-change scenarios. | Coverage depends on the air-change rate you expect, not just floor area. |
| Smart-home use | None stated; T3 confirms there is no smart connectivity. | No phone alerts, remote start, automation or detailed app history. |
| Odour treatment | Standard particle/VOC sensing and filtration are described. | The previous model’s Odour Neutraliser Technology was removed. |
How much room can HP162 clean?
The advertised area is not identical in the two markets because Shark presents the test assumptions differently. The US page states coverage of up to 750 square feet. The UK page specifies 70 square metres at one air change per hour (ACH), or 14 square metres at 4.8 ACH.
| Market and model | Published coverage | Air-change assumption | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, HP162 | Up to 750 sq. ft. | Not stated on the cited US listing | Treat the figure as a maximum marketing-area claim; the desired cleaning rate for your room is not specified there. |
| United Kingdom, HP162UK | 70 m² | 1 ACH | Suitable for a large area when replacing the room’s air relatively slowly. |
| United Kingdom, HP162UK | 14 m² | 4.8 ACH | A much smaller room when targeting substantially more air turnover. |
Air changes per hour describe how many times the purifier’s delivered clean-air volume could replace the room’s air in an hour. A bedroom, office or nursery where you want faster reduction of airborne particles will effectively require more capacity than the same floor area operated at one ACH. Keep doors open, ceiling height and the purifier’s operating speed in mind when comparing the published numbers with your home.
How does the NeverChange filter work, and how long does it last?
Shark describes the filter as exceeding HEPA performance and claims 99.98% particle capture at every speed. The same product information says the NeverChange filter can last up to six years without replacement. “Up to” matters: it is a maximum claim under the manufacturer’s conditions, not a guarantee that every household will receive six years of unchanged performance.

No independent laboratory result in the available review material verifies six-year endurance, and no recurring replacement price is established. Heavy dust, smoke, construction debris or continuous high-speed operation could affect real-world service life, so inspect the manufacturer’s instructions and the filter indicator if the unit provides one. Do not assume that a six-year claim means the filter is washable or that maintenance is unnecessary; follow the current manual for cleaning the exterior and intake areas.

The 99.98% statement is a particle-capture claim for the purifier’s filtration system at each fan speed. It should not be read as proof that a room is sterile, that every pollutant is removed at the same rate or that the purifier can identify and eliminate a specific illness.
What do the sensors, display and Auto mode do?
Shark says the sensors scan 3,600 times per hour and automatically adjust power. T3 reported that the sensors reacted “incredibly quickly during testing,” while the colour-coded display made changes in air quality easy to read. Those are reviewer observations rather than independent laboratory measurements.
Reading the display
The high-resolution screen presents air-quality data directly on the purifier, including the VOC, particle and environmental categories described by Shark. The colour coding is intended to make a glanceable good-to-poor status easier to understand than a string of numbers alone. Because the display is physically on the machine, you need to walk over to see current conditions.
Using Auto mode
Auto mode uses the sensor readings to choose fan power. In T3’s testing, that allowed the reviewer to leave the purifier running with little intervention. Auto is useful when pollutant levels change unpredictably, such as during cooking or when a window is opened, but it cannot send you an alert when you are away because there is no connected service.

Shark says motion and light detection can increase operation or dim the display. This is intended to balance responsiveness with a less intrusive screen in a dark room. The available specifications do not provide a decibel rating or a detailed threshold for those sensor triggers.

How do you set up and move the purifier?
Setup is mostly completed before the purifier reaches you. The one critical first-use task reported by T3 is removing the protective plastic from the filter; leaving that wrapping in place would obstruct airflow and prevent normal filtration.
- Remove the purifier from its packaging and place it upright on a stable floor or surface.
- Open the filter compartment according to the printed instructions.
- Take the filter out and remove all protective plastic or shipping film.
- Reinstall the unwrapped filter and close the compartment securely.
- Connect power, turn the purifier on and allow the display and sensors to initialise.
- Select Auto mode if you want the machine to regulate fan speed without manual adjustments.
T3 measured the unit at 37.85 × 26.67 × 26.16 cm and 3.77 kg. That weight and mostly assembled design make it reasonably portable between rooms, although you should lift it by the main body rather than pulling on the power cable or display area. The available data does not establish a handle design, caster system or a published noise figure, so those details should be checked in the regional manual if they matter for your placement.
What do you lose by choosing an app-free purifier?
The absence of an app is both the product’s main appeal and its largest limitation. There is no pairing process, account creation or Wi-Fi troubleshooting, but there is also no way to operate or monitor HP162 from another room.
- No remote controls: you cannot change fan speed, mode or display settings from a phone.
- No off-site status: the purifier cannot report current air quality while you are at work or travelling.
- No historical charts: the available information does not include app-based trends or downloadable data.
- No smart-home automation: T3 found no integration into wider routines, voice assistants or connected sensors.
- Less setup overhead: there is no account, firmware-pairing process or wireless network dependency for normal operation.
For someone who wants a purifier to run independently in one room, the trade-off is often favourable. For a multi-room home where you want schedules, occupancy rules or a notification when air quality changes, the lack of connectivity is a decisive disadvantage rather than a minor omission.
How does it compare with the previous NeverChange 5?
The clearest documented difference is odour treatment. T3 reports that Shark removed the Odour Neutraliser Technology used on the previous NeverChange 5. If neutralising household smells was a reason you preferred that earlier model, do not assume the NeverChange6 carries the same feature.
| Comparison point | NeverChange6 / HP162 | NeverChange 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Odour Neutraliser Technology | Removed, according to T3. | Used on the previous model, according to T3. |
| App and smart-home support | No smart connectivity reported. | Not stated in the available material. |
| Filter life | Shark claims up to six years. | Not stated. |
| Room coverage | Published by Shark as market-specific figures. | Not stated. |
That limited evidence does not support a complete performance ranking between generations. It does support one practical decision: buyers specifically seeking the prior model’s odour-neutralising feature should verify the specification rather than treating NeverChange6 as an identical replacement.

How much does the purifier cost, and what warranty is included?
The US SharkNinja listing showed $329.99 and a two-year limited warranty when the product information was collected. The UK official page showed £249.99 at crawl time. T3 reported launch or listed pricing of £269.99, $329.99 and €319.99, and said the purifier was available from SharkNinja and Amazon.

Who should buy the Shark BreatheClear NeverChange6?
It is best suited to a reader who wants readable feedback and automatic operation without maintaining another phone app. The strongest use cases are a bedroom, office or living area where one person can reach the controls and where avoiding recurring filter changes matters more than remote monitoring.
- Buy it if you prefer physical, on-device controls and no account or Wi-Fi setup.
- Buy it if Auto mode and a colour-coded air-quality display are more useful to you than charts and notifications.
- Consider it if the published coverage matches your room at the air-change rate you actually need.
- Choose carefully if odour neutralisation was important on the previous model.
Who should choose a different purifier?
Look elsewhere if the purifier must participate in a connected-home system. A model with documented Wi-Fi, scheduling and automation will better serve households that manage several rooms remotely, need phone alerts or want to correlate air-quality events with cooking, cleaning and outdoor conditions.
You should also compare alternatives if you need a published acoustic rating, a documented filter-replacement price or independently measured clean-air delivery data. Those figures are not provided in the material available for HP162, so you cannot make a like-for-like noise or running-cost calculation from the headline specifications alone.
What common problems should you check first?
The purifier powers on but airflow seems weak
First confirm that the filter’s shipping plastic was removed and that the filter compartment is closed correctly. A wrapped or incorrectly seated filter can restrict airflow. If the issue remains, use the regional manual’s intake and filter-cleaning instructions rather than improvising with water or third-party parts.

The display is dim or changes brightness
Light and motion detection can alter the display behaviour. Check the room lighting and whether the purifier has detected movement before assuming the screen has failed.
Auto mode does not run at high speed continuously
Auto mode responds to sensor readings, so a lower fan setting can simply mean the purifier currently detects less pollution. Select a manual speed when you need a fixed setting, then return to Auto when you want sensor-led adjustment.
You want to control it from another room
That is not a configuration problem: the NeverChange6 has no app, remote control or smart-home connectivity according to T3. Use the physical controls, or select a connected model designed for remote operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat is the final buying decision?
The BreatheClear NeverChange6 succeeds by removing decisions: sensors scan frequently, Auto mode adjusts the fan and the display explains the result without a phone. Its filter-life promise could reduce ownership hassle, but “up to six years” remains Shark’s claim rather than a verified lifespan. At roughly the published $329.99 US price or the cited UK prices, it makes the most sense for buyers who value simple, local operation and accept that remote access, automation, historical data and the prior model’s Odour Neutraliser Technology are absent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the HP162 identify a specific pollutant from its display?
No. The display reports broad VOC, particle and environmental readings, which can show that conditions changed but do not identify a particular source or provide a medical diagnosis.
Is the NeverChange filter washable?
The available product information does not say that it is washable. Treat the filter as a replaceable filtration component and follow the current regional manual before attempting any cleaning method.
Does the purifier keep working if the Wi-Fi network is down?
Yes. Wi-Fi is not required because the unit has no connected control system; its sensors, display and Auto mode operate locally.
Is the US HP162 the same model as the UK HP162UK?
They are the market-specific model numbers for the BreatheClear NeverChange product family. Coverage statements, prices and warranty terms differ by region, so use the specification and support information for the country where you buy.
