The Shark BreatheClear Max HP362 is a strong fit for buyers who want a tall, sensor-driven purifier for a large open room and would rather avoid routine HEPA purchases. Its most distinctive feature is the NeverChange filtration system, which Shark says can go up to six years without routine HEPA replacement. The trade-offs are equally important: the large-room rating applies only at maximum fan speed and one air change per hour (ACH), high speed is loud in independent testing of the closely related HP365CO, and that tested variant has no app or remote.
In other words, HP362 is compelling when long filter life and automatic sensing matter more than a compact body, connected controls or quiet maximum performance. Treat the coverage figure as a manufacturer test condition, not a guarantee that every setting will clean a 1,650-square-foot space equally well.
Is the Shark BreatheClear Max HP362 worth buying?
Yes, if your priority is low-maintenance filtration in a large living area and you are comfortable running a tall console at a speed you can hear. It is less convincing for shoppers who require a phone app, remote control, a compact footprint or quiet operation at maximum output.

Choose HP362 when these priorities match yours
- You want automatic adjustment based on motion, light, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors.
- You prefer a washable pre-filter that protects the main filter from dust, pet hair and lint.
- You expect to keep the purifier for years and value avoiding recurring HEPA purchases.
- You have floor space for a unit more than 23 inches tall.
Look elsewhere when these constraints matter more
- You need Wi-Fi scheduling, remote control or a companion app.
- Your bedroom requires very quiet high-output operation.
- You need independently measured low-speed performance for a very large open-plan area.
- You want a short, compact appliance that fits under shelves or beside a low cabinet.
What are the Shark HP362’s specifications?
The following figures come from Shark’s 2026 product information unless noted otherwise. Claims about particle capture, room size and filter life are manufacturer claims, not independent laboratory results for every HP362 setting.

A Costco retailer specification for the separate HP365CO variant lists 220 CFM and 220 dust, pollen and smoke CADR. Do not automatically treat those numbers as HP362 laboratory results; the two models may differ in hardware or firmware.
How does NeverChange filtration work?
NeverChange is not a promise that the purifier can operate forever without care. It describes Shark’s claim that the main HEPA filter can last up to six years without routine replacement under the company’s stated conditions. Shark’s launch material also estimates up to $350 in avoided filter costs over that period. Actual life depends on dust load, smoke exposure, operating time and how consistently the pre-filter is cleaned.
What the pre-filter does
The washable Debris Defense screen is designed to catch larger debris before it reaches the main filter. Shark specifically names dust, pet hair and lint. Keeping that screen clean is the practical step that supports the long-life claim; a clogged screen can restrict airflow and make the fan work harder.

Shark lists a HEPA filter base, filter door, Debris Defense pre-filters and Debris Defense Pro screens as HP362 service parts. Stock and partner availability can change, so check the current parts listing before buying on the assumption that every component will remain available indefinitely.
What “up to six years” does and does not mean
- It is a maximum-duration claim, not a scheduled guarantee for every household.
- It refers to avoiding routine HEPA replacement; it does not eliminate pre-filter cleaning or inspection.
- Heavy smoke, construction dust or continuous high-speed use can shorten useful life.
- Replace or service parts when airflow, odor control or filter-condition indicators show deterioration, even if the calendar period has not elapsed.
How much space can HP362 really clean?
Shark rates the purifier for up to 1,650 square feet at 1 ACH while running at maximum fan speed. One ACH means the purifier’s effective clean-air output equals one complete room-volume exchange per hour under the stated test assumptions. That is a modest air-change target compared with the faster turnover many people want for smoke, allergies or a busy open plan.

Why the rating is not a universal promise
- Fan speed changes airflow. A quiet or automatic setting will deliver less clean air than maximum.
- Open doorways, high ceilings and connected rooms increase the volume the purifier must treat.
- Source control still matters: cooking fumes, a litter box or wildfire smoke can overwhelm a single console.
- Placement affects circulation. A unit pushed against furniture cannot distribute air as effectively as one with clear intake and outlet paths.
Use CADR for a more useful comparison
Square-foot marketing claims use different ACH assumptions, so compare CADR measured under the same standard whenever possible. The only explicit CADR figure in the supplied material is 220 CFM for the Costco HP365CO listing, not a confirmed HP362 measurement. For a very large open plan, look for an independent HP362 CADR result or plan on more than one purifier rather than assuming the headline area rating will provide rapid cleaning.
What sensors and automatic modes does HP362 use?
HP362 samples the air 3,600 times per hour and combines motion, light, VOC and odor sensing. The onboard LCD presents live readings, while automatic control can raise or lower fan power as conditions change. This proactive behavior is the central usability advantage over a purifier that only reacts after a particulate spike.

They wait for irritants to spike, then respond.” The displayed spelling of “purifiers” is preserved from the launch statement.
What the sensors are good at
- Motion sensing can help the unit respond when people enter the room.
- Light sensing can prevent unnecessary bright display behavior in a dark room.
- VOC and odor sensing can detect some chemical or smell-related changes that a particle-only sensor would miss.
- Live LCD readings give you feedback without opening a phone app.
What they cannot guarantee
Sensor readings are indicators, not a complete health assessment of indoor air. They do not identify every pollutant, prove that a room is sterile or replace source control and ventilation. If the display looks normal while you can still smell smoke or a chemical, continue investigating the source rather than relying on the number alone.
Is the Shark HP362 loud at night?
Independent RTINGS testing of the Costco-specific HP365CO variant describes maximum-speed operation as loud and finds weaker low-speed CADR for large rooms. Those results are useful warning signs, but they are not laboratory measurements of HP362 unless Shark confirms that the internal hardware, fan and control curve are identical.

How to interpret the noise trade-off
- Maximum speed is the setting most likely to approach the published room-size condition, and it is also the setting most likely to disturb sleep or conversation.
- Lower speeds are more comfortable for a bedroom but move less air, so they may take longer to reduce pollutants.
- Automatic mode can avoid running at full output continuously, although a sudden event such as cooking or smoke may still trigger an audible ramp-up.
- Place the purifier several feet from the bed and away from hard reflective corners if sound is a concern.
RTINGS found the HP365CO suitable for bedrooms and pets overall, but its high-speed noise and low-speed limitations mean you should choose a setting based on the room’s actual pollutant load rather than leave it permanently at one extreme.
Does HP362 have an app or remote control?
No app or remote is documented in the independent review of HP365CO, the Costco-specific BreatheClear MAX variant. That model is operated from the purifier itself, and HP362’s published feature set likewise emphasizes its onboard LCD and automatic sensing rather than connected control. Confirm the exact package contents for the retailer and model number you plan to buy, because regional bundles can change.
What you can still automate without Wi-Fi
Automatic fan adjustment does not require a network connection. The sensors can react locally to room conditions, so the purifier can continue regulating airflow even when your home network is unavailable. You will not, however, gain remote scheduling, phone alerts or integration with a smart-home platform unless Shark explicitly adds those functions to the exact HP362 version.
How does HP362 compare with Levoit, Winix and HP302?
These comparisons are directional because the available independent test concerns HP365CO, not HP362, and the supplied material does not provide a complete HP302 specification sheet.
| Model or family | Evidence available | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Shark BreatheClear Max HP362 | Long-life filtration claim, extensive sensing, LCD; manufacturer room-size and capture claims | Best fit when filter longevity and automatic local control outweigh app support or compactness |
| Shark BreatheClear MAX HP365CO | RTINGS reports good pet and bedroom suitability, loud maximum speed, weaker low-speed CADR, no app or remote; Costco lists 220 CFM | Useful performance reference, but do not present every result as an HP362 test |
| Levoit Core 600S | RTINGS says it is faster than BreatheClear MAX at maximum speed | Worth considering when rapid maximum-speed cleaning is more important than NeverChange-style filter life |
| Winix C610 | RTINGS says it is quieter and more compact than BreatheClear MAX | Better direction for smaller rooms or buyers sensitive to fan noise and footprint |
| Shark HP302 | Comparable figures were not stated in the supplied material | Check CADR, filter schedule, noise and dimensions side by side before deciding; do not infer parity with HP362 |
The fairest comparison uses the same ACH assumption, independently measured CADR, noise at the speed you will actually use, physical footprint and total filter cost over your expected ownership period.

How should you set up and use HP362?
- Choose an open position. Leave the intake and outlet unobstructed, keep the unit on a level floor and avoid wedging it between furniture or directly behind curtains.
- Install the filter components. Confirm that the HEPA filter base, filter door and Debris Defense screen are seated as shown in the current HP362 instructions before powering on.
- Start with a high-output purge. After cooking, cleaning or bringing in dusty items, use a higher fan setting long enough for the air reading to improve, then reduce speed if the resulting noise is uncomfortable.
- Use automatic sensing for everyday operation. Let motion, light, VOC and odor sensors adjust output when conditions vary. Watch the LCD during the first few days to learn how your room behaves.
- Clean the washable screen regularly. Remove accumulated dust, hair and lint according to Shark’s cleaning instructions and allow any washed component to dry fully before reinstalling it.
- Inspect airflow and odor performance. A persistent smell, reduced output or unusual fan effort can indicate a saturated main filter or blocked pre-filter, even if the six-year claim has not elapsed.
Do not place the purifier next to a competing fan that immediately carries filtered air away from the room, and do not treat the LCD as a substitute for a carbon-monoxide alarm, smoke alarm or professional air-quality test.
What does HP362 cost, and what will ownership involve?
Prices were volatile on the 2026 pages checked. Shark’s page showed a $359.99 sale price against a $449.99 list price, while Costco listed the HP365CO variant at $319.99. These are time-specific prices, not permanent MSRP comparisons, so verify the live price, shipping and return terms before purchase.
| Cost item | Reported figure or condition |
|---|---|
| HP362 direct price | $359.99 sale versus $449.99 list on Shark’s 2026 page |
| HP365CO retailer price | $319.99 at Costco’s 2026 listing; separate variant |
| Routine HEPA replacements | Shark claims up to six years without routine replacement |
| Potential filter savings | Up to $350 over that period, according to Shark’s launch release |
| Warranty | Two-year limited warranty |
The financial advantage depends on how long you keep the unit and what replacement filters for competing models cost in your region. A purifier with a lower purchase price can become more expensive if it requires frequent proprietary filters; conversely, a long-life claim has less value if you replace the unit after only a year or two.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are HP362’s main advantages and drawbacks?
Advantages
- Long-life HEPA claim can reduce replacement frequency and ongoing maintenance cost.
- Automatic sensing covers motion, light, VOCs and odors rather than relying only on particle readings.
- Live readings appear on the built-in LCD without a phone.
- Washable Debris Defense screening is designed to protect the main filter from common household debris.
- The tall format can move air effectively in rooms where a low tabletop purifier would be easily blocked.
Drawbacks
- The room-size headline assumes maximum fan speed and 1 ACH.
- High-speed operation is reported as loud on the closely related HP365CO.
- No app or remote is documented for that independently tested variant.
- The body is over 23 inches tall and occupies meaningful floor space.
- Independent HP362 CADR and noise measurements are not established in the supplied material.
Who should buy the Shark BreatheClear Max HP362?
Buy HP362 if you have a large, mostly open room; want a purifier to react automatically to changing conditions; and place a high value on minimizing routine filter purchases. It is especially sensible for households with pets or frequent dust, where a washable first-stage screen can reduce the debris load reaching the main filter.
Consider another model if your primary use is a quiet bedroom, if you need remote controls, or if you are trying to clean a very large connected floor plan at low fan speed. In those cases, prioritize independently measured CADR and noise over the square-foot label, and consider multiple units so each room receives direct airflow.

- Verify that replacement pre-filters, screens and the filter door are available through an authorized channel.
- Read the current warranty terms for your country and seller.
- Decide whether onboard controls are sufficient without an app or remote.
- Compare measured CADR at the speed you can tolerate, not only the manufacturer’s maximum-speed room rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can HP362 remove odors as well as particles?
Its odor and VOC sensors can detect changes, but sensing is not the same as eliminating every smell. Odor removal depends on the filter media, concentration and how quickly the source is removed; persistent cooking, smoke or chemical odors require ventilation and source control as well.
Can I run HP362 continuously while I am away?
Continuous operation is possible when the unit is placed with clear airflow and maintained correctly. Before leaving it unattended for long periods, check that the pre-filter is clean, the power connection is secure and the surrounding area is free of objects that could block the intake.
Will one HP362 clean a whole house?
A single console mainly treats the room in which it has usable airflow. Closed doors, separate floors and ductwork limit circulation, so multiple rooms generally need their own purifier or a central HVAC filtration strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I know when the NeverChange filter really needs attention?
Look for sustained airflow reduction, unusual fan effort, recurring odors or a filter-condition alert if your unit provides one. The elapsed calendar time alone is not a reliable indicator because smoke and heavy dust can load a filter much faster than a clean household environment.
