VS Code and Cursor share MCP memory only when both connect to the same MCP server and that server reads and writes the same persistent store. MCP is the connection protocol; it does not copy, merge, or replicate memory between clients. Two separately launched local servers can expose identical memory tools while keeping completely separate files and state.

For editors on one computer, point both configurations at one server implementation and a stable storage path, then verify that the implementation supports the required file permissions and concurrent access. For editors on different computers, connect both to one authenticated remote service whose database is persistent. The server’s identity, namespace, durability, locking, and conflict behavior determine whether the shared memory is dependable.

What actually synchronizes when two IDEs use MCP?

An MCP client sends requests to an MCP server. The server exposes tools, resources, or prompts; it is also responsible for saving any durable memory. VS Code and Cursor do not synchronize their own memory databases through MCP.

A useful model is:

  • Client: the IDE’s MCP integration, which discovers tools and sends calls.
  • Server: the process that implements memory operations such as storing, searching, and deleting entries.
  • Backing store: a file or database where entries survive a server restart.

State is shared only when the topology leads both clients to the same server-side data. If each editor starts its own process with its own default file, the resulting memories remain independent. Matching server names, matching tool schemas, or enabling configuration discovery does not change that.

The reference memory-server implementation documents a MEMORY_FILE_PATH setting and a JSONL file as its default persistence mechanism. That demonstrates server-side persistence, not a protocol-level synchronization guarantee. Other MCP memory servers may use a different file, an embedded database, or a hosted data service.

Which deployment pattern should you use?

Choose the topology based on where the editors run and how much operational safety you need.

Topology How both IDEs reach memory Best fit Main risk to check
One local server, one shared file Both clients invoke the same implementation and set the same persistent path. VS Code and Cursor on one workstation. The server may not support simultaneous processes, locking, or safe multi-process writes.
One local server process Both clients connect to a single process already running on the machine. When the server supports multiple client connections. The process must stay available and authenticate both clients correctly.
Remote MCP service Both clients connect to one endpoint; the service owns the persistent database. Different computers, containers, or development environments. Transport support, authentication, tenancy, backups, and service availability.
Separate local servers Each IDE starts its own process and default store. Only when intentionally maintaining separate memories. Entries appear to be missing because the stores are unrelated.

Cursor documents local stdio connections and remote SSE or Streamable HTTP connections. A particular memory server must support the transport you select; the editor’s ability to speak a transport does not prove that every server implements it.

What must be decided before configuring either editor?

Write down these decisions first. They prevent a configuration that connects successfully but shares the wrong data.

  • Server implementation: select one memory server and use the same version or a deliberately compatible version in both clients.
  • Identity: determine which user, team, API token, or operating-system account should own the memory.
  • Namespace: decide whether entries are global, per project, per repository, or per team. Both clients must address the same namespace.
  • Persistence location: identify the file or database and confirm that it survives process restarts.
  • Concurrency model: verify whether the implementation supports multiple client processes, locking, transactions, deduplication, and conflict handling.
  • Secret handling: keep tokens out of committed project files. Use the editor’s supported secret store or environment-variable mechanism.

How do I configure Cursor to use the shared memory server?

Cursor’s documented MCP configuration uses a top-level mcpServers object. Project configuration is stored at .cursor/mcp.json; global configuration is stored at ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

Local process configuration

Use the same command, arguments, environment variables, and persistent-path setting that you will use for the other client. The command below is illustrative; replace it with the startup command documented by your chosen server.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shared-memory": {
      "command": "path-to-your-memory-server",
      "args": [],
      "env": {
        "MEMORY_FILE_PATH": "/absolute/path/to/shared-memory.jsonl"
      }
    }
  }
}

Use an absolute path that both processes can access. On a team machine, avoid putting a user-specific home-directory path in a repository configuration unless every user is expected to have the same layout.

Remote configuration

For a hosted deployment, use Cursor’s documented URL-shaped server entry and supply authentication through the supported secret or environment mechanism. The endpoint must be the same service used by the other client, not merely another server with a similar name.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shared-memory": {
      "url": "<MCP_ENDPOINT_URL>"
    }
  }
}

The placeholder is a configuration variable, not a live service address. Confirm whether the server expects SSE or Streamable HTTP and follow its current authentication instructions.

How do I configure VS Code without breaking the format?

VS Code documents two configuration shapes. Its VS Code-specific format uses a top-level servers object in .vscode/mcp.json or a user-profile configuration. Its portable MCP/Copilot format uses a top-level mcpServers object in the supported .mcp.json location. Capabilities and fields can differ, so use the format required by the VS Code release and feature you are using.

VS Code-specific configuration

Create or edit the workspace file at .vscode/mcp.json when the server should apply to one project. A user-profile file is more appropriate when every workspace on that machine should see the same server. The exact command, arguments, environment variables, and URL come from the memory server’s documentation.

Portable MCP configuration

If your VS Code setup uses the portable format, place the server under mcpServers and follow that format’s documented transport fields. Keep the storage path and server identity identical to the values used by Cursor.

Does VS Code discovering Cursor’s configuration make the memory shared?

No. VS Code can discover Cursor’s global and workspace MCP configuration locations when those discovery sources are selected, but discovery only imports or exposes connection settings. It does not merge databases, redirect a server’s storage file, or make two independently launched processes consistent.

Non-Copilot discovery sources are documented as off by default. If you enable a discovery source, inspect the resulting server entry and then verify the actual process command, environment, endpoint, and persistence path. Treat discovery as a setup convenience, not as a data-synchronization feature.

How can I share a local memory file safely?

A shared local file is practical for two editors on one computer only after the selected server documents safe access by the processes involved.

  1. Choose a stable location. Put the JSONL file or database outside temporary directories and outside a disposable project checkout. Back it up according to the value of the data.
  2. Set the persistence variable. For the reference memory server, set MEMORY_FILE_PATH to the same absolute path in both editor configurations.
  3. Match permissions. Ensure the operating-system account running each process can read and write the store. Check directory permissions as well as the file itself.
  4. Use one namespace. Configure identical project, workspace, or team identifiers. A shared file with different namespace filters can look like two separate memories.
  5. Check locking behavior. Look for documented file locks, atomic writes, transactions, or a recommendation to run one long-lived process. Do not assume JSONL append operations are safe under simultaneous writes.
  6. Restart deliberately. Stop both clients, make a small test entry, restart the server or editor, and confirm that the entry remains. This tests durability rather than just an in-memory cache.

If the implementation does not document multi-process safety, the conservative design is one server process serving both clients, or a remote service with a database designed for concurrent access. A common path alone is not proof of consistency.

When is a remote server the better choice?

Use a remote endpoint when the editors run on different computers, in separate containers, or under environments that cannot access the same local filesystem. Both clients then send requests to one service, and that service controls the persistent database.

Before relying on this arrangement, confirm:

  • The server supports the transport you intend to use: stdio is local-process oriented, while SSE and Streamable HTTP can support local or remote deployments when implemented by the server.
  • Both clients authenticate as the intended user or team.
  • The service maps both sessions to the same workspace or namespace.
  • Writes are durable and backed up, and you understand retention and deletion behavior.
  • The service documents concurrent writes, retries, idempotency, and conflict resolution.
  • Network access, TLS validation, firewall rules, and token rotation are handled for every environment.

A remote service solves filesystem reachability, not every consistency problem. If its database is eventually consistent, applies per-tenant isolation, or rejects simultaneous updates, those rules still govern what each IDE sees.

How do I verify that VS Code and Cursor really share state?

Perform a two-way test instead of relying on a green connection indicator.

  1. Open the server details or MCP log in each IDE and confirm that both point to the same command or endpoint.
  2. Compare the effective environment, especially the persistence path, account, workspace identifier, and namespace.
  3. In VS Code, ask the agent to create a uniquely named test memory containing a timestamp and a harmless value.
  4. In Cursor, invoke the server’s search or retrieval tool and look for that exact unique name.
  5. Create a second entry in Cursor and retrieve it from VS Code.
  6. Restart the relevant server process and repeat one retrieval to test durability.
  7. Inspect the server’s own logs or database status if an entry is missing; do not infer the cause from the editor UI alone.

The test should use unique labels so an old entry cannot produce a false positive. Delete the test records afterward, using the server’s supported deletion operation.

What are the common failure modes and fixes?

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Each IDE sees only its own entries. Separate server processes use different default files. Set one explicit persistence path or connect both clients to one remote service.
The server connects, but retrieval returns nothing. Different namespace, project, tenant, or authenticated identity. Compare effective identity and namespace values, then create a uniquely labeled test entry.
Entries disappear after restart. Memory is stored only in process memory, or the configured path is temporary or unwritable. Configure the documented persistent store, check permissions, and verify restart behavior.
One client shows malformed or missing records after simultaneous writes. The implementation lacks safe multi-process locking or atomic updates. Use one server process or a database-backed remote deployment; follow the implementation’s concurrency guidance.
Cursor works but VS Code reports an invalid configuration. The file uses the wrong top-level key or transport fields. Use VS Code’s current servers format or its supported portable mcpServers format.
Configuration appears duplicated in VS Code. Manual setup and discovery both expose the same server. Disable the unwanted discovery source or remove the duplicate entry, then verify which one is active.
Remote calls fail only outside the office or container. Firewall, proxy, DNS, TLS, or token restrictions. Test the endpoint from the actual runtime environment and configure network and secret access there.

What security and backup practices matter?

Memory can contain source-code context, credentials accidentally pasted into prompts, customer details, or proprietary decisions. Treat the backing store as sensitive project data.

  • Use the least-privileged account and token that can perform the required memory operations.
  • Keep credentials out of .cursor/mcp.json, .vscode/mcp.json, and shared portable configuration files.
  • Restrict permissions on a local memory file and its parent directory.
  • Encrypt remote connections and confirm certificate validation rather than disabling it to bypass errors.
  • Back up persistent files or databases, and test restoration rather than assuming a copy is usable.
  • Define retention and deletion rules for obsolete or sensitive memories.
  • Review server logs for accidental prompt or token disclosure.

Configuration synchronization can also create a security leak: a workspace file committed to source control may expose an endpoint or a username even when the secret itself is stored elsewhere.

What MCP does not guarantee

MCP standardizes how a client communicates with a server; it does not guarantee replication, conflict-free merging, ordering, transactions, backups, or a particular database. The editor documentation establishes connection and configuration mechanisms, while storage semantics remain specific to the selected server.

Likewise, a connected server does not force an AI agent to call memory tools on every task. Provide clear agent instructions describing when to read, write, update, or delete memories, and audit tool calls during the initial rollout.

If your workflow requires strict consistency, ask the server maintainer for documented guarantees about concurrent writers, retry behavior, versioning, and conflict resolution. If those guarantees are absent, design for one writer at a time or accept that manual reconciliation may be required.

Which setup is the right starting point?

  • One workstation, occasional use: begin with one server process and an explicit persistent path. Add multi-process access only after the implementation documents it.
  • Two editors used simultaneously on one workstation: prefer a single multi-client server process, or verify file locking before allowing both clients to launch independent processes.
  • Multiple computers or disposable environments: use one authenticated remote service with documented durable storage and concurrency behavior.
  • Separate personal and team memories: use distinct namespaces or accounts intentionally; do not rely on editor names to isolate data.

The decisive check is always the same: trace both clients to the server process, then trace that server to its actual persistent store. If those paths diverge, the memories diverge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one MCP memory file from Windows and macOS?

Only if the file is on storage both systems can access and the server supports that access pattern. In practice, a remote server is usually simpler because it avoids cross-platform path, permissions, locking, and simultaneous-mount problems.

Why does my agent connect to the memory server but never save anything?

Connection confirms that the server is reachable, not that the model will call write tools. Check the available tool list, inspect the MCP log for write calls, and add explicit agent instructions describing when a memory should be saved.

Should project memory be global or workspace-specific?

Use a workspace or project namespace for facts that are meaningful only inside one repository, and a global namespace for durable preferences that apply everywhere. Mixing them can expose project-sensitive context in unrelated workspaces.

How do I migrate memories to a different MCP server?

Use the original server’s supported export operation or back up its documented database/file, then import through the destination server’s documented format. Do not edit a JSONL or database file by hand unless the implementation explicitly guarantees that it is safe.
