On a Ryzen AI laptop running Windows 11, start with Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose Best power efficiency when you are unplugged. Then enable Energy saver, reduce brightness and (when supported) refresh rate, shorten screen-off and sleep timers, and check which apps are using power in the background. These changes can improve runtime, but they cannot guarantee a fixed number of extra hours: AMD says battery life depends on the complete system, software, settings, battery age and operating conditions.
Which Windows settings extend battery life the most?
The largest practical gains usually come from four controls you can change without installing software: Windows power mode, Energy saver, the display, and idle timers. Use them as a profile for battery operation rather than leaving every setting at its maximum-performance value.
- Power mode: Best power efficiency prioritizes runtime; Balanced is a compromise; Best performance favors responsiveness and speed.
- Energy saver: Reduces some background activity and can be enabled immediately or at a battery percentage you choose.
- Display: Lower brightness and, for static work, a lower refresh rate reduce display power demand.
- Idle behavior: Shorter screen-off and sleep delays prevent the laptop from spending long periods doing nothing while still powered.
Windows and the laptop maker can rename, hide or replace some controls. If a setting is missing, look for an OEM power utility or firmware profile, but keep the Windows controls that are available.

How do I choose the right Windows power mode on battery?
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Select Best power efficiency for the battery profile if a small reduction in peak responsiveness is acceptable. Microsoft describes this option as “Saves battery life.”

Best power efficiency
Use it for writing, web research, messaging, document work and media playback when maximum speed is unnecessary. Windows may respond less aggressively to bursts of demand, so heavy spreadsheets, compiling, 3D work or other sustained workloads can feel slower.
Balanced
Balanced is the sensible default when you alternate between ordinary work and demanding tasks. It gives up some potential savings to preserve a more consistent response. AMD’s published laptop runtime examples were measured in Balanced Mode, so those figures should not be treated as the result of Best power efficiency.
Best performance
Choose this temporarily for workloads where latency or throughput matters more than unplugged time. It can increase power use and fan activity. Switch back before returning to light battery work.

Some systems do not expose all three choices, or present a manufacturer-specific name. The available list is controlled by Windows, the laptop firmware and the OEM configuration, not by the Ryzen AI processor alone.
How should I configure Energy saver?
In Settings > System > Power & battery, open Energy saver. Turn it on while working away from an outlet, or configure it to start automatically at a battery level that gives you enough reserve to finish your work.
What Energy saver changes
Energy saver limits some background activity and can dim the display when its brightness option is enabled. Those limits may delay background synchronization or reduce activity from apps that do not need to run continuously. Foreground work remains possible, but notifications and updates can behave differently.

Pick a threshold that fits your routine
A high threshold protects more of the battery but may activate while you still have plenty of charge. A low threshold leaves more time in normal mode and gives less protection if you cannot reach a charger. Choose the point at which you would normally start looking for an outlet, then adjust it after observing your routine.
Energy saver is not a replacement for closing an unusually active application. If one program is consuming power continuously, investigate it in Battery usage rather than assuming the processor is at fault.
Which display settings save power without making the laptop unpleasant to use?
The display is often one of the most visible battery loads. Use the lowest brightness that remains comfortable, then reduce refresh rate when your work is mostly static.
Brightness
Use the brightness control in Settings > System > Display or the keyboard shortcut. Lower it until text is clear without forcing your eyes to squint. A very dim screen can make you work harder and is not a useful saving if you immediately raise it again.
Content-adaptive brightness
If your laptop offers content-adaptive brightness, consider leaving it enabled on battery. Microsoft says adaptive brightness and contrast can reduce power use by changing the backlight or image level according to what is displayed. The trade-off is visible brightness or contrast shifts, which can be distracting and are unsuitable for color-sensitive editing. Turn it off for work that requires a stable visual reference.

In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select a lower available refresh rate for reading, email and office documents if the panel supports it. Microsoft’s battery guidance notes that higher refresh rates use more power. Keep the higher rate for scrolling-heavy work, animation, gaming or presentations where motion smoothness is important.

The available rates depend on the panel and its driver. Do not expect a 120 Hz option on a display that only exposes 60 Hz, and do not assume two Ryzen AI laptops use the same OLED resolution or refresh-rate range.
What screen-off and sleep timers should I use?
Set separate battery timers under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. A shorter screen-off delay saves the display’s energy when you step away; a shorter sleep delay reduces the time the rest of the system remains active after the screen turns off.
For desk work
Choose a delay short enough to cover ordinary pauses, but long enough that reading a page without touching the keyboard does not blank the screen. If you frequently pause to think, set screen-off slightly longer than your natural pause and let sleep follow after a further interval.
For presentations and long reading
Use longer delays only when you are actively presenting or reading. Restore the shorter battery values afterward. A timer that is too short can interrupt a presentation or make you repeatedly wake the laptop, consuming attention and sometimes more power than the idle period would have used.
Why screen-off is different from sleep
Turning off the panel removes display power while leaving the system ready to resume. Sleep reduces more activity but can interrupt network-connected work or delay notifications. Set both according to whether you need the session immediately available or can tolerate a wake-up pause.
How can Battery usage reveal the apps that drain a Ryzen AI laptop?
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and inspect the apps listed for the relevant period. Look for programs with unusually high foreground or background use, especially ones you did not expect to be active.

Reduce background work
For an app that supports it, open its background-activity setting and choose a less active option. Close launchers, synchronizers, browser windows or media tools that are not needed. A browser with many active tabs, a video call, or repeated cloud synchronization can consume more energy than ordinary document work.

Interpret the list carefully
Battery usage is evidence about software activity, not a benchmark of AMD versus another processor. The same app can behave differently after an update, with different browser tabs, or when an external display or peripheral is connected. Check the list after reproducing the drain instead of making a processor-brand assumption.
What does AMD’s Ryzen AI NPU power control do?
AMD’s Ryzen AI software documentation describes an NPU control with four modes: powersaver, balanced, performance and turbo. In AMD’s words, powersaver configures the NPU to prioritize power saving and preserve laptop battery life.
This is an advanced developer-oriented control, not a universal Windows consumer switch. The documentation says turbo requires AC power; without AC, it uses performance mode. Ordinary owners should not install developer tooling solely to obtain the battery settings already available in Windows. Use the NPU controls only when your laptop software specifically exposes them and you understand which workloads use the NPU.
NPU power policy affects supported AI workloads, not every source of laptop consumption. It does not replace display, timer, Energy saver or app-management settings.

There is no universal runtime number for all Ryzen AI laptops. AMD states that actual battery life varies with system configuration, software, settings, product age and use, and operating conditions.

The tested AMD systems were ASUS Zenbook S14 configurations with Ryzen AI 7 450 (77 Wh, 2,880×1,800 OLED, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD) and Ryzen AI 7 445 (77 Wh, 1,920×1,200 OLED, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD), running Windows 11 build 26200. AMD’s comparison also lists an HP OmniBook Ultra 14 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 356H and a 70 Wh battery. Different screen resolutions, memory, storage, firmware profiles and software can change results even within one model family.
AMD calls at least eight hours of continuous runtime “All Day Battery Life” and more than eight hours “Multi-Day Battery Life,” while warning that these labels are approximate and vary by system, settings, age and operating conditions. Treat the labels as broad categories, not a personal guarantee.
What is a practical battery profile for everyday work?
Apply the following sequence after connecting the laptop to battery power. It gives you a repeatable starting point while preserving an easy path back to performance.

- Open Energy saver, enable it manually for the current session, and set an automatic battery threshold for longer trips away from an outlet.
- Reduce brightness to the lowest comfortable level. Decide whether content-adaptive brightness is acceptable for your work.
- Open Advanced display and choose a lower refresh rate for static tasks when the option exists.
- Set screen-off and sleep delays under Screen and sleep so idle periods do not leave the laptop fully active.
- Check Battery usage after a normal work session. Restrict background activity or close apps that are unexpectedly active.
- Switch to Balanced or Best performance only for a workload that demonstrably needs the extra responsiveness, then return to the battery profile.
How do I balance battery savings with responsiveness?
Use task-based switching rather than one permanent setting. Best power efficiency, Energy saver, a dimmer screen and a lower refresh rate suit text-heavy work. Video editing, large code builds, gaming, high-frame-rate demonstrations and other sustained workloads may justify Balanced or Best performance and a higher refresh rate while connected to power.
- If the laptop feels sluggish: move from Best power efficiency to Balanced before changing every other setting.
- If text or color looks wrong: raise brightness, disable adaptive brightness, or restore the normal refresh rate for that task.
- If the screen turns off during work: lengthen the battery screen-off timer rather than disabling sleep entirely.
- If runtime remains poor: inspect Battery usage and background activity before blaming Ryzen AI hardware.
- If a control is missing: check the OEM power application and Windows updates; device firmware determines which modes are exposed.
These adjustments work because they reduce avoidable display, idle and background consumption. They do not turn every Ryzen AI laptop into the same battery platform, and no setting can overcome a worn battery or a workload that continuously uses the CPU, GPU, display and wireless radios.

Why does Energy saver make my screen look darker?
Energy saver can dim the display when its brightness option is enabled. Turn that option off if the dimming interferes with your work, then lower brightness manually to a level you can use comfortably.
Should I use a lower refresh rate for gaming on battery?
Only if preserving runtime matters more than motion smoothness. A lower rate is better suited to static office work; games and animation generally benefit from the panel’s higher available rate, at the cost of more power.
Do all Ryzen AI laptops show the same power-mode choices?
No. Windows version, firmware and the manufacturer’s configuration can make modes unavailable or give them different names. The processor family alone does not determine the visible controls.
How should I compare battery claims between two Ryzen AI laptops?
Compare workload, brightness, Wi-Fi state, Windows power mode, battery capacity, display resolution and refresh rate, memory, storage and background software. Headline hours are not comparable when those conditions differ.
