On iPhone Duo, hinge automations are created in Shortcuts > Automation > Display > Opened or Closed. Choose the opening or closing event, then use explicit “set” actions rather than toggles. Build reversible behavior for both directions, test open–close–open transitions, and check the physical fit of any case. Shortcuts receives an open/close event; it does not expose arbitrary hinge-angle thresholds. Apps built with Apple’s hinge APIs can distinguish closed, partially open, and fully open positions and receive continuous angle updates, but that richer data is separate from consumer Shortcuts.
What does the iPhone Duo hinge trigger actually detect?
The Opened or Closed automation is an event trigger in the Display category. It tells Shortcuts that the Duo crossed an opening or closing boundary; it is not a live measurement of the hinge’s exact angle.
That distinction matters when you design a routine. A Shortcuts automation can react to the transition, while an app using Apple’s developer interfaces can observe three high-level states—closed, partially open, and fully open—and receive continuous hinge-angle updates. Apple describes those APIs as live interaction data. They are intended for app experiences and effects, not as proof that Shortcuts can be configured with a custom threshold such as 45 degrees.
How do I create an opening or closing automation?
Use the following path and keep the first version deliberately small so you can identify failures.
#1 Best Overall
- [Compatible with iPhone Duo] This Phone Case Only Compatible with iPhone Duo case 7.6 inch.
- [Skin-Friendly] The back of the case is crafted with a skin-touch matte finish, which feels smooth and non-slip in your hand. Unlike glossy surfaces that attract fingerprints and smudges, this matte texture stays clean with minimal wiping, while its soft tactile sensation enhances holding comfort for long periods.
- [Magnetic Craft] The built-in magnetic ring can strengthen the magnetic absorption, empowering the case to be compatible with wireless charger, magnetic car mount, magnetic battery bank, magnetic wallet, and most MagSafe accessories. The perfectly aligned magnets enable wireless charging faster and safer than ever. Wireless charge on with the case on.
- [Shock Protection] Withstanding the rigorous 10-foot military-grade drop test, it builds a solid defense for your device, and can easily resist the damage caused by violent impacts and accidental drops.
- [Precise Cutout] Precise cutout fits the volume buttons, side button, and curves of your device without adding bulk. It is a more lightweight case with a firm and comfortable grip.
- Open Shortcuts and select Automation.
- Tap to create a new personal automation, then choose the Display category.
- Select Opened or Closed.
- Choose the event option for opening, closing, or both, according to the choices shown on your device.
- Add the actions that should run after that event. Start with one visible, low-risk action so you can confirm the trigger before adding more.
- Save the automation and repeat the process for the opposite direction if the interface does not let you configure both directions in one automation.
- Open the Duo, close it, and open it again. Confirm that the expected action occurs on each transition before relying on the routine.
Labels and confirmation screens can change with software updates, so read the event name carefully rather than selecting a similarly worded display or app trigger.
How should opening and closing behavior be designed?
Reliable designs assign a known end state to each event. This prevents a repeated transition from gradually putting the phone in the opposite state from the one you intended.
Opening branch
Decide what “open” should mean for your workflow, then set that result directly. For example, an opening branch can set a chosen Focus, apply a known wallpaper, set a defined volume level, or place an app in the state your routine requires. The important property is that the action declares the desired state instead of asking Shortcuts to invert an unknown one.
Closing branch
Make the closing branch the explicit inverse of the opening experience. If opening sets a work Focus, closing can set a personal Focus or another known mode; if opening sets a higher volume, closing can set a specific lower level. A branch should remain safe when it runs twice in a row.
Why “set” is safer than “toggle”
A toggle depends on the current state. If the hinge event is generated again during a quick open–close sequence, a toggle can undo the result of the previous run. A “set” action is idempotent: running it repeatedly produces the same destination state. Use toggles only when you have a separate, reliable way to verify the current value first.
Which actions are safest for a first test?
Begin with actions whose result is easy to see and easy to reverse. A known Focus, wallpaper, volume level, or app state gives you an immediate confirmation that the automation ran.

- 10FT Military Grade Protection:10FT military drop protection for iPhone Duo case. Hard PC backplate, flexible shockproof TPU bumpers, and 4 corner airbags absorb heavy impacts from accidental falls
- Use a deterministic value: choose a named Focus or a specific volume instead of “toggle Focus” or “change volume by 10%.”
- Keep side effects narrow: avoid adding messaging, deletion, purchases, or other irreversible operations until the trigger has behaved correctly through repeated transitions.
- Separate diagnosis from convenience: test one action first, then add the rest of the routine one action at a time.
- Account for access state: Apple’s Shortcuts guidance does not establish that every action is available or behaves identically while the phone is locked. Treat locked and unlocked operation as separate test cases.
A wallpaper change is useful as a visual test, but it does not demonstrate that Shortcuts can read a continuous hinge angle. It only confirms that an open or close event reached the automation.

Test transitions as a small matrix rather than as one successful opening. The goal is to expose missed events, duplicate runs, and actions that behave differently under lock.
- Opening test: start fully closed, open the Duo normally, and verify the opening result.
- Closing test: return to the original state, close the Duo completely, and verify the closing result.
- Repeat test: perform open, close, open, and confirm that each branch leaves the intended state.
- Pause test: wait briefly between transitions, then repeat with a faster sequence to see whether your actions remain deterministic.
- Lock test: repeat the sequence while locked and unlocked. Record which actions run in each condition instead of assuming they are equivalent.
- Physical-fit test: perform the same sequence with the protective case installed. Check that the outer display remains usable and the hinge reaches both end positions.
During setup, keep a short record of the event selected, the actions used, the lock state, and the observed result. If behavior changes after an operating-system update, that record makes it clear whether the trigger, an individual action, or the case is responsible.
Can Shortcuts trigger at a specific hinge angle?
Not on the evidence available for the consumer automation. The documented Shortcuts trigger is the named Opened or Closed event, while Apple’s developer APIs expose richer hinge information to applications.
| Implementation | Event or data | Determinism | Lock-screen behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shortcuts automation | Open/close boundary | High when actions set known states | Not established for every action by Apple’s Shortcuts guidance | No-code routines tied to the two hinge events |
| App using Apple hinge APIs | Closed, partially open, fully open, plus continuous angle updates | Controlled by the app’s implementation | Depends on the app and system context; not stated in the Shortcuts guidance | Angle-aware interfaces, effects, and interactions |
Apple says SwiftUI provides an onHingeChange modifier and UIKit provides UIHingeInteraction. Those interfaces observe hinge status live. Apple also recommends arrangement and region APIs for layout decisions, rather than treating a raw angle as the layout model. Building an app is therefore the appropriate route when “partially open” or a continuous angle is essential.

What happens during rapid transitions or repeated events?
The trigger is tied to an event boundary, so every meaningful open or close transition should be treated as a possible new run. A routine that changes state relatively, or toggles a value, can drift when the user moves the hinge repeatedly.

Use absolute settings, make each branch reversible, and avoid assuming that the previous run completed before the next event. If a sequence contains several actions, test the sequence at normal and faster speeds and verify the final state rather than relying on a single intermediate visual change.
Will a case interfere with the outer screen or hinge?
It can. A case may cover part of the outer display, alter the edge framing, or prevent the hinge from reaching a complete open or closed position. Apple documents a display adjustment at Settings > Display & Brightness > Shift Left Edge for cases that obstruct the outer-screen edge.
- Install the case exactly as you will use it.
- Open and close the Duo fully, checking for resistance, a gap, or a changed stopping point.
- Confirm that the outer display’s controls remain reachable. If the case masks the edge, enable Shift Left Edge and test touch access again.
- Run the open–close–open automation test with the case fitted, because a routine that works without the case may not receive the same physical transitions with it installed.
Do not force a hinge against a case edge. A case that affects closure or alignment is a physical compatibility problem, not a Shortcuts setting.
Which accessibility setting helps with opening and unlocking?
If pressing the side button and opening access is difficult, review Settings > Accessibility > Side Button > Rest Finger to Open. This setting changes the access method; it does not add a new hinge-angle trigger or make a Shortcut aware of partially open positions.
After changing it, repeat the lock and unlock portions of your test matrix. That confirms that the accessibility choice improves access without changing the conditions under which your actions are allowed to run.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is a hinge problem a support issue rather than an automation issue?
Stop treating the problem as a Shortcut fault if the Duo cannot open or close completely, makes unexpected noise, has a loose hinge, shows a bent or broken hinge, or has enclosure damage that affects hinge operation. Those are physical symptoms Apple identifies for support attention.

Remove the case while checking whether it is the source of resistance, but do not continue forcing a damaged mechanism. If the phone still fails to reach an end position without the case, preserve the automation settings and seek hardware support.
How should I maintain these automations after software changes?
Keep the automation readable: use separate opening and closing branches when that makes the intended direction obvious, name each automation for its event, and limit each branch to actions that have a clear destination state. After an update that changes Shortcuts or Display labels, revisit the event selection and repeat the open, close, repeat, lock, and case tests.
Do not expand a no-code automation merely to obtain angle precision. If the requirement changes from “when opened” to “while partially open” or “at a particular angle,” move that requirement into an app designed to consume Apple’s hinge APIs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an iPhone Duo automation run while the phone is locked?
Apple’s Shortcuts guidance does not establish identical behavior for every action in the locked and unlocked states. Test the specific actions you use in both conditions and document any difference before depending on the routine.
Can one automation handle both opening and closing?
Use both event choices when the Opened or Closed interface presents them. If your screen separates the choices, create two automations so each direction has an explicit, reversible action set.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why did my routine work once but fail after several open-and-close cycles?
A toggle or relative adjustment can produce the wrong result when events repeat quickly. Replace it with an action that sets a known value, then repeat the transition test at normal and faster speeds.
What should I do if the outer display edge is hidden by my case?
Enable Settings > Display & Brightness > Shift Left Edge and verify that touch targets are reachable. Also check that the case does not prevent complete hinge travel, because display framing and mechanical clearance are separate issues.
