Yes—if you care about detailed sound, a comfortable redesign, and earbuds you can keep running after their batteries age. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 (MTW5) costs $299.95 in the United States, matching the previous generation’s launch pricing, and its defining improvement is user-replaceable batteries in both earbuds and the charging case. Battery life is excellent with active noise cancellation (ANC) disabled, but roughly six hours per charge with ANC enabled. The ANC is effective rather than class-leading: Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives still suppress more noise. For listeners who prioritize high-fidelity tuning, modern codecs, multipoint, and long-term repairability, the MTW5 is a significant upgrade. ANC-first buyers should compare competing models before spending $299.95.
What is new in the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5?
The MTW5 was announced on August 20, 2026. Sennheiser kept the US list price at $299.95 and lists a one-year warranty. The headline change is not a cosmetic revision: each earbud and the charging case contain a user-replaceable battery. Sennheiser says owners can refresh the cells with a compact screwdriver instead of discarding the product when its rechargeable batteries lose capacity.
That design addresses the normal weakness of sealed true-wireless earbuds. Sound quality and wireless features can remain useful for years, but tiny lithium-ion cells gradually hold less charge. With the MTW5, the battery is intended to be a service item. Sennheiser product manager Frank Foppe described the goal as bringing “the larger-than-life sound and connected technology of the MOMENTUM series into a remarkably compact format.” President of Consumer Hearing Lilika Beck called balancing compact size, high-fidelity acoustics, and a replaceable battery “a major breakthrough.”

US price and warranty
Sennheiser Hearing USA lists the MTW5 at $299.95 in 2026. That is a one-time list price, not a recurring subscription or service charge. The US product page lists a one-year warranty; regional warranty terms can differ, so check the policy attached to the country where you buy.
How long does the MTW5 battery last with ANC?
Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours per earbud and up to 40 hours including the case with ANC turned off. Independent ANC-on results are much lower, as expected: What Hi-Fi? estimates about six hours per earbud and 25 hours total, while SoundGuys measured 6 hours 17 minutes of playback with ANC enabled in a controlled test.
| Use condition | Per-earbud figure | Total with case | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANC off | Up to 12 hours | Up to 40 hours | Sennheiser claim, 2026 |
| ANC on | Approximately 6 hours | Approximately 25 hours | What Hi-Fi? estimate, 2026 |
| ANC on | 6 hours 17 minutes | Not stated | SoundGuys controlled test, 2026 |
“Up to” figures describe favorable conditions. Codec choice, volume, call use, temperature, spatial-audio processing, and the strength of the Bluetooth connection can change real runtime. The practical expectation is therefore about a workday of ANC listening before recharging, not 12 hours with ANC active.
What does the replaceable-battery design involve?
Sennheiser says the earbud and case cells can be replaced by the owner using a compact screwdriver. The company has not published a universal replacement-battery price or a single worldwide retail program in the information available here. Before opening a unit, confirm that the replacement cell is intended for the MTW5, follow Sennheiser’s service instructions, and understand that opening the hardware can affect water resistance or warranty coverage if done incorrectly.
The repairability advantage is still substantial. A conventional sealed pair may become uneconomical when its batteries degrade; the MTW5 gives you a path to restore the original earbuds and case instead of replacing the entire set. Because battery availability, tools, and service terms can vary by country, treat replaceability as a long-term design benefit rather than a guaranteed low-cost repair until local parts are confirmed.
How does the MTW5 sound?
The MTW5’s strongest performance is its sound. Reviews describe a crisp, nimble, detailed presentation with a wide soundstage, smooth instrumental separation, and the kind of lively high-resolution character expected from the Momentum line.

Detail, staging, and bass
What Hi-Fi? praises the earbuds’ clarity and agility, while TechRadar reports a wide stage and detailed, smooth audio. RTINGS also treats sound quality as one of the reasons to choose the MTW5. The 7mm dynamic drivers produce a full presentation without making the earbuds physically large, and the stable fit helps preserve bass consistency as you move.
Is the treble suitable for everyone?
No. What Hi-Fi? and SoundGuys both note that the upper frequencies can sound etched or prominent. Treble-sensitive listeners may prefer a smoother tuning, especially with bright recordings, cymbals, or poorly mastered streaming tracks. Auditioning the MTW5 with familiar music is sensible if you know you are sensitive to high-frequency energy.
Is the MTW5 ANC as good as Sony or Bose?
The ANC is effective but not the best available. SoundGuys measured just under 85% perceived-noise reduction with ANC enabled, and RTINGS found improved bass-range noise cancellation over the MTW4. Even so, Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives provide stronger absolute suppression in the comparisons summarized by the reviews.
Passive isolation contributes significantly: SoundGuys measured around 71% passive perceived-noise reduction before ANC was engaged. A good seal therefore matters as much as the electronic processing. Correct ear-tip size can improve low-frequency isolation, while a poor seal makes every ANC system appear weaker.
Where the MTW5 works well
- Office HVAC noise, train rumble, aircraft cabin noise, and other steady low-frequency sounds are reduced effectively.
- Transparency and normal conversation use benefit from the secure fit and modern processing, although the available reviews do not assign a separate transparency percentage.
- The improved bass-range ANC is a meaningful step beyond the MTW4 even though it does not lead the category.
Where rivals have an advantage
If your first requirement is maximum silence on flights or in loud commutes, Sony and Bose remain safer choices based on the cited comparisons. Apple’s premium alternative is also reported to deliver stronger absolute ANC. The MTW5 makes a better case when sound character and repairability are weighted alongside noise reduction.

Are the MTW5 comfortable and secure?
Yes. RTINGS finds the MTW5 more comfortable and stable than the MTW4 despite the removal of the previous model’s stability fins. The redesign is also described as sturdier, and TechRadar reports a comfortable fit.

Each earbud weighs 7g. That is light enough for extended listening, while the improved shape keeps the buds in place without relying on external fins. Fit remains personal: ear anatomy, tip size, and jaw movement can change comfort and seal. Spend a few minutes testing both earbuds before judging ANC or bass response.
Can I use the MTW5 outdoors?
The earbuds carry an IP54 rating. That indicates protection against limited dust ingress and water splashes, not immersion. They are suitable for ordinary sweat and light rain when maintained as directed, but they should not be submerged, rinsed under a tap, or used while swimming. The charging case does not automatically share the earbuds’ protection, so keep it dry.
Which wireless features does the MTW5 support?
The MTW5 combines broad device compatibility with high-quality audio options:
- Bluetooth 6.0: the current Bluetooth generation specified for the earbuds.
- aptX Lossless: for compatible source devices and listening chains that support the codec.
- aptX Adaptive: a flexible codec mode that balances quality and connection conditions on compatible devices.
- Multipoint: maintain connections to two devices and switch between them, useful for a computer and phone.
- Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair: quicker setup on supported Android and Windows devices.
- Dolby Atmos head-tracked spatial audio: supported content and device software are required; the effect is not identical to ordinary stereo playback.
SoundGuys reports stable everyday connectivity during a two-week evaluation. Codec benefits depend on the phone, computer, operating system, and app. If a source device does not support aptX Lossless or aptX Adaptive, the earbuds fall back to another available Bluetooth codec rather than creating a lossless link.
How does the MTW5 compare with leading alternatives?
The right choice depends on whether you value tuning, ANC, runtime, or repairability most. The following table separates established MTW5 information from comparison points that the cited reviews describe qualitatively.
| Category | Sennheiser MTW5 | Sony WF-1000XM6 | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Technics EAH-AZ100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US price in the cited material | $299.95 list price, 2026 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |

Technics is especially relevant if you want LDAC, three-way multipoint, and longer runtime. Sony is the stronger battery-and-ANC proposition in RTINGS’ comparison. Bose and Sony are also the safer starting points for an ANC-first purchase. The MTW5’s distinctive advantage is the combination of Sennheiser tuning, a comfortable stable shell, and replaceable batteries.

How should I set up the MTW5 for the best result?
- Charge everything fully. Charge both earbuds in the case and charge the case before the first long session.
- Pair with your main device. Use Google Fast Pair on a supported Android device or Microsoft Swift Pair on a supported Windows PC; otherwise open Bluetooth settings and select the MTW5.
- Choose the correct ear tips. Test the supplied sizes in both ears. A secure seal improves bass and passive isolation, which also helps ANC.
- Enable multipoint only if needed. Pair the phone and computer you use most. Additional active connections can complicate automatic switching, so disable multipoint when a single-device setup is more reliable.
- Select the best codec your source supports. Use aptX Lossless or aptX Adaptive where compatible. If connection stability drops, allow the system to fall back to a more robust codec.
- Try spatial audio selectively. Dolby Atmos head tracking can suit films and supported music, but ordinary stereo may sound more natural for other recordings.
- Check ANC with a good seal. Compare ANC on and off in the same noisy environment. If bass disappears or external sound leaks, refit the tips before blaming the electronics.
What are the MTW5’s main weaknesses?
- ANC is not category-leading. Sony, Bose, and Apple alternatives suppress more noise in the cited comparisons.
- ANC cuts endurance sharply. Expect around six hours rather than the 12-hour maximum when cancellation is active.
- Treble may be too forward. Reviews warn that the highest frequencies can sound etched to sensitive listeners.
- Replacement parts are not yet a fully specified global program. The hardware is designed for user replacement, but local battery availability, instructions, and pricing need confirmation.
- The list price is premium. Budget-focused shoppers should consider discounted MTW4 stock if they do not need replaceable batteries or the newer connectivity features.

- Modern Bluetooth 6.0 features, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and multipoint.
- Up to 12 hours per earbud and 40 hours total when ANC is off.
- The ability to replace batteries in both earbuds and the case rather than replacing the entire product.
- IP54 protection for ordinary dust and splash exposure.
Choose another model first if you need
- The strongest possible ANC for aircraft, subway, or consistently loud environments.
- Longer ANC-on runtime than roughly six hours.
- A softer treble presentation without auditioning the Sennheiser tuning.
- A lower purchase price today, in which case discounted previous-generation stock may be more attractive.
What is the final MTW5 verdict?
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 is a meaningful same-price upgrade because it fixes the most consequential long-term limitation of premium wireless earbuds: battery aging. Its detailed sound, comfortable stable redesign, broad codec support, and repairable earbuds and case make it a strong choice for listeners planning to keep one pair for years. The compromise is clear: ANC and ANC-on battery life trail the very best alternatives. Buy the MTW5 for sound quality and serviceability; choose Sony, Bose, or Apple when maximum noise cancellation is the deciding factor.

Frequently Asked Questions
When was the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 announced?
Sennheiser announced it on August 20, 2026. The US product listing shows a $299.95 price and a one-year warranty; warranty coverage outside the United States can differ.
Can I buy an MTW5 replacement battery today?
The earbuds and case are designed for owner replacement with a compact screwdriver, but no universal battery price or worldwide retail program is established in the available product information. Confirm local parts and official instructions before opening the hardware.
Does IP54 mean I can wear the MTW5 while swimming?
No. IP54 is intended for limited dust and splash exposure, not submersion. Keep the charging case dry and avoid swimming, showering, or rinsing the earbuds.
