Self-hosting works reliably when you treat it as an operating system rather than a one-time installation. DNS sends a public name to your server, a reverse proxy provides the public entry point, TLS encrypts the connection, backups protect your data, and a repeatable update and recovery process keeps the service available.

For a typical home or small-server deployment, point the domain’s A and/or AAAA records at the server, forward ports 80 and 443 to a reverse-proxy host, and use a proxy such as Caddy to obtain and renew a publicly trusted certificate. Keep application ports, databases, and administration dashboards private; expose only the services that genuinely need public access.

What has to be true before a self-hosted site can use public HTTPS?

Four conditions must line up: the hostname must resolve to the server, the proxy must be reachable from the internet, the proxy must know which application should receive the request, and its certificate data must persist between restarts. If any one is missing, certificate issuance or normal browsing will fail.

  • A DNS record: An A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. An AAAA record maps it to an IPv6 address. Use the record type that matches the addresses through which your server is actually reachable.
  • Reachable ports: Normal public certificate validation and web traffic require ports 80 and 443 to reach the proxy. At home, that usually means router port forwarding plus firewall rules on the router and server.
  • A hostname in the proxy configuration: The proxy uses the requested host, such as notes.example.com, to select a backend service.
  • Persistent writable data: Certificate and account data must survive a container recreation or host reboot. A proxy that loses its certificate state may request certificates again or fail to serve existing ones.

Before changing proxy settings, confirm the DNS answer with an authoritative lookup. Caddy’s HTTPS documentation demonstrates checking an A or AAAA response through DNS over HTTPS; the important point is to verify what the public DNS system returns, not merely what a local hosts file says.

What if the server is behind a router?

Create forwarding rules for TCP ports 80 and 443 from the public interface to the machine running the reverse proxy. Permit the same traffic in the host firewall. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work at all; you would need a reachable public address or a different access architecture rather than repeatedly changing DNS.

Can managed DNS be used?

Yes. One option is to onboard the domain with a managed DNS provider that can also act as a reverse proxy. Cloudflare’s domain onboarding documentation describes that arrangement. It is an architectural choice, not a requirement: authoritative DNS can point directly to your address while your own reverse proxy handles the application traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I point a domain to a self-hosted server?

Use this order so that each layer can be tested before the next one depends on it.

  1. Choose the public hostname. Decide whether the service will use the apex name, such as example.com, or a subdomain such as notes.example.com. Keep separate names for separate applications.
  2. Create the DNS record. Add an A record for the server’s public IPv4 address and an AAAA record only when IPv6 connectivity is configured end to end. Do not publish an address that cannot route back to the proxy.
  3. Forward and permit ports. Send ports 80 and 443 from the router to the proxy host, then allow them through the host firewall. Keep application ports such as 9000, database ports, and dashboard ports out of the public rules.
  4. Verify propagation. Query authoritative DNS for the hostname and confirm that the returned address is the one assigned to your server. If it is wrong, fix DNS before troubleshooting the proxy.
  5. Configure the route. Tell the proxy that the hostname should forward to the application’s private address and port.
  6. Test from outside your network. Use a mobile connection or another external network. A test from inside the same LAN can be masked by local DNS or router hairpin behavior.

DNS changes can be cached according to their TTL, so a correct record may not appear everywhere immediately. Do not compensate for stale caches by creating conflicting records.

What is a reverse proxy, and why is it useful?

A reverse proxy is the public front door for one or more private services. It accepts a request on ports 80 or 443, examines the hostname and route, and forwards the request to the appropriate backend. The application can remain on an internal port while the proxy owns the public web ports.

For example, a Caddy configuration can route example.com to a service listening on localhost:9000:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
example.com {
    reverse_proxy localhost:9000
}

With separate hostnames, the same proxy can send notes.example.com and photos.example.com to different private services. Clients see clean HTTPS URLs; the applications do not need to compete for ports 80 and 443.

What does the proxy not solve?

Routing is not authentication. It does not patch an application, make a weak password safe, add rate limits automatically, or protect an exposed administration path. Those controls remain application and network responsibilities. Review each service’s authentication, update process, logging, and authorization independently.

Can the proxy encrypt traffic to the backend?

Yes. The client-facing connection can be HTTPS while the backend uses HTTP on a trusted private interface. Where the internal network is not fully trusted or traffic crosses separate hosts, configure HTTPS to the backend as well. Caddy’s reverse-proxy documentation covers both the common private-HTTP arrangement and optional encrypted upstream connections.

Which reverse proxy should a beginner choose: Caddy or Nginx?

Both are production-capable. Caddy is usually the shorter path when automatic certificates and a small amount of configuration matter most; Nginx is attractive when you need detailed, explicit control over proxy behavior and already understand its configuration model.

Certificate issuance and renewal Automatic HTTPS obtains and renews certificates when DNS, ports, hostname, and persistent data are correct. Typically paired with Let’s Encrypt and an explicit certificate-management workflow.
Configuration style Concise host-based configuration; a simple reverse-proxy rule can be enough for a service. More granular configuration and control, with more setup to maintain.
HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior Redirects HTTP to HTTPS as part of automatic HTTPS. Configured explicitly in the server blocks.
WebSockets Supported through common reverse-proxy deployments. Supported, but the required proxy settings must be configured correctly.
Backend privacy Can forward to a private HTTP service or use HTTPS to the upstream. Can proxy to private services and can be configured for encrypted upstream traffic.
Troubleshooting workflow Check DNS, ports, hostname, writable certificate data, and proxy logs. Check DNS, ports, certificate tooling, server-block selection, and proxy logs.

Supabase’s self-hosting guidance presents Caddy as the simpler automatic-HTTPS route and Nginx with Let’s Encrypt as the more configurable route. Choose based on the control you need, not on a promise that one proxy can secure an unsafe application by itself.

Do I need HTTPS for a home server?

Use HTTPS whenever a service is reached through a browser or API, especially when credentials, session cookies, personal files, or administrative actions are involved. HTTPS encrypts the connection and lets clients verify that they reached the intended hostname through a publicly trusted certificate.

How does automatic TLS work?

Caddy can request a certificate from a public ACME certificate authority such as Let’s Encrypt or ZeroSSL, install it for the configured hostname, renew it before expiration, and redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS. This automation depends on the prerequisites: public DNS must resolve correctly, ports 80 and 443 must be reachable, the hostname must appear in configuration, and certificate data must be writable and persistent.

Use “TLS certificate” for the certificate and “HTTPS” for the encrypted protocol. A certificate is one part of the protocol; it does not replace application authentication or authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is a self-signed certificate appropriate?

A self-signed certificate can be useful for local development or an isolated test network. Browsers and other clients will warn unless they trust the certificate’s issuing authority. Supabase’s production guidance recommends a publicly trusted certificate instead of a self-signed one for internet-facing deployments.

Should I customize cipher suites?

Usually not. Caddy’s TLS documentation describes its maintained defaults as secure and says they should generally remain unchanged unless there is a clear reason to customize them. Old cipher-suite snippets copied from unrelated tutorials can reduce compatibility or override safer defaults.

How do I back up Docker volumes and prove that the backup works?

A useful backup includes the database, uploaded files, configuration, and secrets, stored in more than one place and protected from the server that created it. A job that exits successfully is not proof of recoverability; only a completed restore demonstrates that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the backup routine

  1. Inventory the data. List every Docker volume, bind-mounted directory, database, configuration file, and secret required to recreate the service. Record the application version and deployment definition alongside the data.
  2. Create a consistent database dump. Run a database-native dump on a nightly schedule or another interval appropriate to the amount of data you can afford to lose. A raw file copy while the database is changing may be unusable.
  3. Copy volumes off the server. Use an encrypted backup tool such as restic to send volume data and configuration to separate storage. Keep at least one copy on a different system or site.
  4. Encrypt and restrict access. Protect the backup repository and its keys separately from the server’s normal credentials. Anyone who compromises the application host should not automatically be able to delete every backup.
  5. Apply retention and cleanup. Keep multiple recovery points and remove old copies according to your data-loss and storage requirements. There is no universal retention period; a service with frequent business changes needs a different policy from a personal project.
  6. Rehearse a restore. On a clean machine or isolated environment, restore the database, files, configuration, and secrets. Start the application, verify logins and representative records, and record the date and result.

What does 3-2-1 mean in practice?

Keep at least three copies of important data, on two different types of storage or systems, with at least one copy off-site. The pattern reduces the chance that a disk failure, ransomware event, operator mistake, or site outage destroys every copy at once.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should I keep self-hosted applications updated?

Updates are an operating process that combines change control, observation, and recovery. Docker images, Compose definitions, the operating system, proxy configuration, and system services all require attention over time.

  1. Check the current state. Confirm available disk space, service health, recent logs, and the age and location of the latest restorable backup.
  2. Read the change notes. Look for required database migrations, changed environment variables, removed options, or incompatible dependencies before pulling a new image or package.
  3. Choose a controlled window. Apply changes when you can monitor the service and respond. The sources do not establish one safe weekly or monthly cadence for every application.
  4. Update one dependency group at a time. Avoid changing the operating system, database, proxy, and application simultaneously unless you have a tested reason to do so.
  5. Inspect health and logs. Confirm the process is running, the proxy reaches the backend, background jobs execute, and authentication and representative user actions work.
  6. Record the result and rollback path. Keep the previous image or package version, configuration backup, and restore instructions. If the update fails, revert the change or restore data rather than improvising under pressure.

Monitoring should alert on disk-full conditions, downtime, resource exhaustion, and service failures. Regular log review often reveals certificate errors, repeated login attempts, or a failing dependency before users report an outage.

How do I keep Portainer, databases, and other admin interfaces private?

Do not publish sensitive dashboards or database administration tools directly to the internet. Put them behind SSH access, a VPN or tailnet, or a gated proxy with strong authentication and network restrictions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bind internal services to 127.0.0.1 or a private interface when the software permits it.
  • Expose only ports 80 and 443 on the public firewall unless another public service is deliberate and documented.
  • Reach a private dashboard through an SSH tunnel or private network path instead of adding a public DNS name.
  • If a proxy must gate access, require authentication and restrict source networks; do not rely on an obscure URL.
  • Review router and host-firewall rules after every deployment.
  • Scan the public address from outside the network and verify that only intended services answer.

Keeping a dashboard off the public internet lowers its attack surface, but it does not eliminate the need for patches, strong credentials, least-privilege accounts, and audit logs.

What should I check when a self-hosted service fails?

Work from the outside in so that a failure at one layer does not lead you to change an unrelated layer.

  1. DNS: Does the public hostname return the intended A or AAAA address?
  2. Network path: Do the router and host firewall forward and permit ports 80 and 443?
  3. Proxy: Is the proxy running, listening on the expected interfaces, and selecting the correct hostname?
  4. Certificate state: Is certificate data writable and persistent, and do proxy logs show an ACME validation error?
  5. Backend: Is the application listening on the private address and port named in the route?
  6. Application: Do its own logs show authentication failures, migrations, missing secrets, or database errors?
  7. Recovery: If the change caused the outage, can you roll back the configuration or restore the last verified backup?

Test from an external network and compare proxy logs with application logs. A successful DNS lookup does not prove that a port is reachable, and a valid certificate does not prove that the backend is healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I self-host without buying a domain name?

You can run services on a private network or reach them by an IP address, but public ACME certificates and convenient host-based routing normally require a registered public domain. For a LAN-only service, an internal name and a locally trusted certificate authority are alternatives, with client trust configured on every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if my home IP address changes?

DNS will eventually point to the old address unless you update the record. A dynamic-DNS updater can change the A or AAAA record when the address changes, but you still need working port forwarding, firewall rules, and certificate validation at the new address.

Can several self-hosted apps share one public IP address?

Yes. Give each app a different hostname and let the reverse proxy route by the HTTP Host header and TLS server name. The applications can continue using separate private ports while the proxy shares ports 80 and 443.

How often should I test a restore?

Set the interval from the amount of data loss and downtime you can tolerate, then put the test on a calendar. A restore test should use a clean or isolated environment and verify that the service can actually start and that important records and files are usable, not merely that archive files can be listed.
