Security Ninja and Sucuri solve different parts of WordPress security. Security Ninja is a security toolkit that runs in your WordPress installation, while Sucuri offers a WordPress plugin plus a separate cloud platform that filters traffic before it reaches your site. Choose Security Ninja when you want tests, hardening controls, vulnerability alerts, file-integrity checks and remediation tools in wp-admin. Choose the Sucuri platform when you need an edge Web Application Firewall (WAF), CDN and DDoS controls, monitoring, and a vendor that performs paid malware cleanup. Sucuri’s free plugin can detect and report malware but does not remove it. Security Ninja Pro advertises scanning and cleanup features, yet you still operate the process and verify the result.

What is the difference between Security Ninja and Sucuri?

The main difference is where protection runs and who is responsible for fixing an incident. Security Ninja is installed as a WordPress plugin and gives the site operator tests, alerts, firewall controls and repair workflows inside the dashboard. Sucuri has two distinct products: a free WordPress plugin for auditing and remote scanning, and a paid, cloud-based website-security platform that sits in front of the site.

That distinction affects setup, coverage and cost:

  • Protection point: Security Ninja’s normal controls execute in WordPress. Sucuri Platform filters requests at its network edge before they reach WordPress.
  • Site scope: Security Ninja is a WordPress tool. Sucuri Platform is platform-agnostic and can protect non-WordPress sites as well.
  • Malware responsibility: Security Ninja Pro provides scanning and cleanup tools for a self-service workflow. The free Sucuri plugin detects and reports; paid Sucuri Platform plans include human cleanup.
  • Deployment: Security Ninja normally requires plugin installation and activation. Sucuri Platform generally requires DNS routing through Sucuri.
  • Cost model: Security Ninja has Free and Pro tiers; the captured official listing does not state a current Pro price. Sucuri publishes monthly firewall prices and annual platform prices that can change.

Neither product is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on whether your priority is dashboard-level control or a managed perimeter service.

How does protection at the edge differ from protection inside WordPress?

An edge WAF receives a visitor’s request before your server and WordPress code. It can block malicious traffic, absorb or mitigate some denial-of-service traffic, and hide the origin server’s address. A plugin acts after the web server has accepted the request and loaded enough of WordPress to run the plugin, so it can inspect files, settings and events but cannot prevent every request from consuming server resources.

Security Ninja’s local model

Security Ninja’s standard installation is a WordPress plugin. Its documented baseline includes a free basic 8G firewall, more than 50 security tests, vulnerability scanning, core-integrity scanning and basic event logging. These checks are useful for finding weak settings, altered core files and known vulnerabilities in the WordPress environment. Because the controls are local, the site owner can review findings and apply changes from wp-admin.

Sucuri’s edge model

Sucuri Platform places its WAF and delivery services in front of the origin. Sucuri documentation says activation generally involves changing a DNS A record or nameservers so traffic is routed through Sucuri’s edge. The platform adds continuous monitoring, blacklist monitoring, CDN and performance features, and DDoS mitigation. Those controls continue to operate even when the site is not running WordPress, which is why Sucuri can protect other web applications and platforms.

The free Sucuri plugin is a separate, in-dashboard component. It provides auditing, hardening, activity monitoring and remote malware scanning through SiteCheck; it is not the same thing as the cloud WAF.

What does Security Ninja provide in its Free and Pro tiers?

Free tier: a diagnostic baseline

The official WordPress.org listing describes Security Ninja as a lightweight firewall plugin and security toolkit intended to find misconfigurations, block common attacks and identify known vulnerabilities. The free tier includes:

  • A basic 8G firewall.
  • More than 50 security tests.
  • Vulnerability scanning.
  • WordPress core-integrity scanning.
  • Basic event logging.

These features make the free tier a practical starting point for an administrator who wants visibility without changing DNS. They do not constitute a managed incident-response service: you must interpret findings, make changes and confirm that a suspected infection is gone.

Pro tier: broader controls and automation

Security Ninja Pro adds a cloud firewall, malware scanning and cleanup, login brute-force protection, two-factor authentication, one-click fixes, event exports and webhooks, and scheduled scans. The WordPress.org description of its cloud-firewall service cites a database of more than 600 million known bad IP addresses. The vendor feature list also identifies 404 Guard, WooCommerce protection, visitor logging and agency-oriented tools.

“Cleanup” here should be read as a tool-assisted workflow. The operator still has to review detections, run the available fixes, test the site and check that legitimate files and orders continue to work. The captured listing confirms Free and Pro tiers but does not provide a current Pro price, so obtain a live quote before budgeting.

Early Firewall: a beta option with constraints

Version 5.304’s changelog, dated October 1, 2026, adds an optional Early Firewall for Pro users. It is marked beta and can run before WordPress by using PHP’s auto_prepend_file. Running earlier can block some requests before the normal plugin stack loads, but the same changelog records important limits: Early Firewall is unavailable on multisite and IIS, and its guided migration refuses competing WAF prepends. Treat it as a compatibility-sensitive feature, not a universal replacement for an edge WAF.

What does the Sucuri plugin do, and what requires Sucuri Platform?

The free WordPress plugin

The free plugin handles auditing, hardening, activity monitoring and remote malware scanning. Sucuri’s FAQ states: “The Sucuri Scanner plugin for WordPress will audit and detect malware using our remote scanner, SiteCheck. It does not remove malware, but does offer a path to the payload when available, along with additional recommendations to help you get your website cleaned.” In practical terms, the plugin can tell you that a file or page looks suspicious and may point to the payload, but the cleanup work remains yours.

Remote scanning also has an evidence limit: a scanner can only report what its checks can observe. You should compare findings with known-good backups, inspect administrator accounts and review server access when an alert appears rather than assuming a single scan proves the site is clean.

Paid Sucuri Platform

Paid platform plans combine a cloud WAF with continuous monitoring, blacklist monitoring, CDN and performance functions, DDoS mitigation and human malware cleanup. This is the option for an owner who wants a provider to handle the removal phase instead of executing every repair manually. Plan pages show different scan frequencies and malware-removal response targets by plan, so confirm those service levels for the plan and region you are buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The platform’s DNS or nameserver routing is a deliberate trade-off. It lets Sucuri inspect traffic before origin delivery and cover non-WordPress sites, but it adds a DNS change, propagation time and another control plane to document for your team.

How do you install and deploy each product?

Security Ninja installation

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for Security Ninja, install the plugin and select Activate.
  3. Open its dashboard and run the initial security tests, vulnerability scan and core-integrity scan.
  4. Review each finding before using a one-click fix; record changes that affect login, caching, WooCommerce or custom code.
  5. If you use Pro, configure scheduled scans, brute-force protection, two-factor authentication, exports or webhooks, and verify that your hosting environment supports the chosen firewall mode.

This path leaves DNS unchanged. It is usually the least disruptive option for a small site, a staging site or an administrator who needs immediate visibility in the existing dashboard.

Sucuri plugin installation

  1. Install and activate the Sucuri plugin from the WordPress plugin screen.
  2. Open its audit and hardening panels and review activity-monitoring settings.
  3. Run the remote SiteCheck scan and save the report if it flags a payload or blacklist issue.
  4. Use the report’s recommendations, your backups and server-level access logs to plan remediation; the free plugin itself does not perform malware removal.

Sucuri Platform activation

  1. Create the platform account and add the site’s origin details.
  2. Record current DNS records, mail-related records and any allowlists before changing traffic routing.
  3. Follow Sucuri’s activation instructions to change the DNS A record or nameservers so web traffic reaches the Sucuri edge.
  4. Wait for DNS propagation, then verify HTTPS certificates, redirects, logged-in administration, forms, APIs, cron jobs and third-party callbacks.
  5. Confirm that the origin is not still publicly reachable in a way that bypasses the WAF, and document the new DNS and firewall ownership.

Because Sucuri Platform is a proxy service, a mis-copied DNS record or an origin rule that blocks Sucuri can take the site offline. Schedule the change when you can test the full application.

Which product is better for malware detection and removal?

For detection, both products provide useful signals; for removal, their responsibilities differ sharply.

Need Security Ninja Sucuri
Find suspicious files or configuration issues Free tier includes vulnerability and core-integrity scans; Pro adds malware scanning. Free plugin audits, hardens and uses remote SiteCheck scanning.
Remove malware automatically or with tools Pro advertises cleanup and one-click fixes; the site operator runs and validates them. Free plugin does not remove malware; paid Platform plans include human cleanup.
Protection before WordPress loads Optional Pro Early Firewall (beta) uses PHP auto_prepend_file, with multisite and IIS exclusions. Platform WAF operates at the cloud edge after DNS routing.
Who owns incident verification The administrator or agency using the plugin. Sucuri handles the paid cleanup service, while the owner still verifies business functionality.

If the site is already infected and you need a provider to perform the removal, the paid Sucuri platform is the clearer fit. If you have technical staff who prefer to inspect files, apply fixes and keep the workflow in WordPress, Security Ninja Pro can be appropriate. In either case, preserve a clean backup, rotate compromised credentials and check for persistence in administrator accounts, scheduled tasks and server files.

How do the features compare?

Capability Security Ninja Free Security Ninja Pro Sucuri WordPress plugin Sucuri Platform
WordPress security tests More than 50 documented tests Includes the Free tests Auditing and hardening checks Platform monitoring plus plugin option
Firewall location Basic 8G firewall in WordPress Cloud firewall; Early Firewall beta option Plugin-level controls Cloud WAF at the edge
Vulnerability scanning Yes Yes, with scheduled scans Remote malware scan and audit Continuous monitoring and platform scans
Core-integrity scanning Yes Yes Not stated in the captured plugin description Not stated as a separate platform feature
Login protection and 2FA Not stated for the Free tier Brute-force protection and 2FA Hardening features are provided; exact 2FA scope is not stated WAF protection plus plugin controls
Activity or visitor logs Basic event logging Event exports, webhooks and visitor logging Activity monitoring Continuous and blacklist monitoring
CDN and DDoS mitigation Not stated Not stated as part of the plugin tier Not included in the free plugin description CDN/performance features and DDoS mitigation
Coverage beyond WordPress No; WordPress plugin No; WordPress-focused, with firewall features No; WordPress plugin Yes; platform-agnostic service
Agency features Not stated Agency tools listed by the vendor Not stated Plan-dependent; exact agency features not stated

The table shows why a direct feature-count contest is misleading. A local scanner and an edge WAF address different failure points, and a monitoring alert is not the same service as human remediation.

Which should you choose for common WordPress situations?

Choose Security Ninja when dashboard control is the priority

  • You want to start without changing DNS or nameservers.
  • Your team can review alerts, update vulnerable components and validate repairs.
  • You need WordPress-specific tests, core-integrity checks, login protection, 2FA or WooCommerce-focused controls.
  • You want scheduled scans, exports or webhooks for an agency workflow.
  • You are evaluating a staging site where an edge proxy would add unnecessary routing complexity.

Choose Sucuri Platform when perimeter protection or managed response is the priority

  • You need a WAF that filters traffic before it reaches the origin.
  • You want CDN/performance functions, DDoS mitigation and blacklist monitoring in one service.
  • You operate more than WordPress or need a platform-agnostic security layer.
  • Your organization wants paid human malware cleanup rather than a self-service repair process.
  • You can manage DNS changes, certificate validation and origin allowlisting.

Use both only with a tested design

A layered setup can be sensible: an edge WAF handles hostile traffic while a WordPress plugin checks files and configuration. However, overlapping firewalls can block legitimate requests twice, alter login behavior or create conflicting rules. Security Ninja’s own comparison guidance warns that a Sucuri edge WAF and another full application-security suite may overlap in blocking and login behavior. If you combine products, test staging first, identify which service owns each rule, and keep an emergency bypass and rollback plan.

What compatibility and operational pitfalls should you check?

  • Multisite: Security Ninja’s Pro Early Firewall beta is unavailable on multisite. Do not enable it expecting network-wide early filtering.
  • IIS hosting: The same Early Firewall option is unavailable on IIS. Use the normal plugin mode or an infrastructure control compatible with IIS.
  • Existing prepend or WAF rules: Early Firewall migration refuses competing WAF prepends. Remove or reconcile duplicate prepend mechanisms only after documenting how to restore the previous state.
  • DNS mistakes: A Sucuri activation that omits mail, verification or API records can interrupt unrelated services. Export the zone before editing and test each critical hostname.
  • False positives: A firewall rule that blocks a payment callback, search request or administrator action can look like an application bug. Review logs and add the narrowest exception possible.
  • Incomplete cleanup: A “clean” front-end scan does not prove that every backdoor, user account or scheduled task is gone. Compare files with known-good copies and rotate credentials after confirmed compromise.
  • Performance assumptions: A cloud proxy can improve delivery through CDN caching, but dynamic dashboards, APIs and personalized pages still need correct cache bypass rules.

How can you make the final decision?

  1. Decide whether requests must be filtered before the origin. If yes, shortlist Sucuri Platform or another edge service; a normal plugin alone cannot provide that position in the network.
  2. Decide who will remove malware. Select paid Sucuri cleanup when you need vendor-operated remediation; select Security Ninja Pro when your team will operate and verify the tools.
  3. List the sites and platforms involved. A WordPress-only portfolio can use a plugin-centered approach; mixed technology stacks benefit from Sucuri’s platform-agnostic coverage.
  4. Check hosting constraints, especially multisite, IIS, existing WAFs and PHP prepend settings.
  5. Price the complete operating model, including DNS administration, incident labor, backups, monitoring and any plan response commitments, rather than comparing a single feature or headline subscription.
  6. Test the chosen configuration on staging, then verify login, checkout, forms, APIs, cron, email delivery and rollback procedures before applying it to production.

Frequently asked questions

Can the free Sucuri plugin clean a hacked WordPress site?

No. It can audit the installation and detect malware through the remote SiteCheck scanner, and it may show a path to a payload. Removing the infection requires your own repair process or a paid service that includes human cleanup.

Does Security Ninja slow a WordPress site?

The official listing presents it as lightweight, but actual impact depends on hosting resources, scan schedules, logging volume and enabled protections. Run intensive scans during a maintenance window and monitor server CPU, memory and response time instead of assuming a universal performance result.

Will changing DNS to Sucuri change my domain’s email?

It should not if mail records remain intact, but an incomplete DNS migration can remove or alter MX, SPF, DKIM or verification records. Export the existing zone, copy non-web records accurately and test mail separately after propagation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an edge WAF enough without a WordPress security plugin?

No single layer covers every failure. An edge WAF can block traffic before it reaches the origin, while a plugin can inspect WordPress files, settings and administrator activity; decide whether the added local controls justify the operational overlap and testing.

What should I do first after a malware alert?

Preserve evidence and access before deleting files: make a forensic backup, record the scanner report, review recent administrator and hosting logins, and rotate credentials from a clean device. Then choose a verified restoration or cleanup path and test the site before declaring the incident resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the free Sucuri plugin clean a hacked WordPress site?

No. It detects and reports malware through remote scanning but does not remove it. Cleanup must be performed by you or supplied through a paid service with human remediation.

Does Security Ninja slow a WordPress site?

The vendor describes it as lightweight, but impact varies with hosting resources, scan schedules and logging. Measure your own server during scheduled scans rather than relying on a blanket performance claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing DNS to Sucuri change my domain’s email?

Not if all mail records are preserved, but an incomplete DNS migration can disrupt MX, SPF, DKIM or verification records. Export the zone first and test mail after DNS propagation.

Is an edge WAF enough without a WordPress security plugin?

No. An edge WAF filters traffic before the origin, while a plugin can inspect WordPress files, settings and administrator activity. Use one or both based on your risk and ability to manage overlapping rules.

What should I do first after a malware alert?

Preserve a forensic backup and the scanner report, review recent access, and rotate credentials from a clean device. Then follow a verified cleanup or restoration process and test the complete site.
