Rare lists 60 GB as the PC drive-capacity requirement for Sea of Thieves, but that figure comes from a requirements page last updated June 22, 2023; it is not a current measurement of the installed game. Update downloads are smaller, version-specific packages—not the full game. On Xbox Series X|S, the game must be installed on the console’s internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD to launch.
How much space does Sea of Thieves take up?
For PC, Rare’s published system requirements specify 60 GB of drive capacity across the listed performance tiers. The page was last updated on June 22, 2023, so use 60 GB as Rare’s published requirement, not as a verified current install size. The same page lists different storage hardware by performance tier, ranging from a 5.2K RPM HDD at the lowest tier to SSDs for higher tiers. See Rare’s PC system requirements.

Rare’s available official information does not establish a current full installed size or required free-space allowance for every platform and PC storefront. The live size can depend on the platform and game version, so check the installation prompt in your store or launcher before downloading; do not treat the older PC requirement as a precise current footprint for all systems.
How big is the Sea of Thieves download?
A download figure in release notes describes that particular update, not the full installed game. For example, Rare’s Season 20 release notes (version 3.8.0) list these platform-specific update downloads:

Where can you install Sea of Thieves?
Xbox Series X|S
Rare says players using a standard external HDD cannot launch Sea of Thieves on Xbox Series X|S following game changes. Install it on the console’s internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD instead. This compatibility guidance applies to Series X|S; it should not be assumed to describe Xbox One, PC, or PlayStation 5. Rare’s support notice, updated May 21, 2026, states: “Please install the game on the console’s internal SSD, or an expanded high speed SSD.” Read Rare’s Xbox Series X|S external HDD notice.

What to check before installing
- Use the size shown in your current platform store or launcher as the best available indication of the package it will download.
- Keep the distinction clear: the download prompt describes the package being downloaded, while installed size describes the space occupied after installation; release-note update sizes describe one patch.
- On Xbox Series X|S, confirm the game is on the internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD, not a standard external HDD.
- For PC, regard Rare’s 60 GB figure as a dated published drive requirement rather than a guaranteed current installed size or a stated free-space buffer.
