The Scythe Magoroku is worth considering if you prioritize cool DDR5 modules, broad socket support and moderate noise over maximum CPU cooling. Its dual-tower design and two 120 mm fans kept memory unusually cool in Tom’s Hardware’s testing, but it struggled with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, especially when that processor was allowed to draw more than 200 W. At a $42.99 MSRP, it is a specialized value rather than an all-purpose winner: a sensible match for a quieter, memory-conscious system, but a questionable choice for a high-power flagship AMD build.

The practical decision comes down to three checks: your CPU’s sustained power, your case’s 155 mm cooler-height limit, and whether tall DIMMs require moving the front fan. The following review explains those trade-offs, installation, measured temperatures and the situations in which another cooler is a better buy.

Is the Scythe Magoroku worth buying?

Buy the Magoroku when low memory temperatures and restrained acoustics are more important than class-leading CPU temperatures. Avoid it for a Ryzen 9 9950X3D or another high-power processor if your priority is the lowest sustained core temperature under heavy all-core workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cooler’s strongest result was not on the CPU itself. Tom’s Hardware measured an average DDR5 temperature of 43 °C, or 21 °C above ambient, tying for second place in its memory test after excluding an all-in-one cooler equipped with additional VRM fans. Noise remained relatively low, with a maximum measured level of 43.4 dBA. Those are meaningful strengths for a workstation that sits close to the user or uses tall, heavily heatsinked memory.

CPU results were much less convincing. On a Ryzen 9 9950X3D test system with Precision Boost Overdrive enabled, the processor could exceed 260 W and reach its 95 °C junction limit; the Magoroku was the weakest cooler on that test bench. At a 200 W limit it was the second-warmest cooler tested. Tom’s Hardware’s conclusion was direct: “Scythe’s Magoroku cools RAM effectively, but our CPU thermal testing with AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D did not yield impressive results.”

What are the Magoroku’s design and specifications?

The Magoroku uses two black fin stacks, six copper heatpipes and a pair of 120 mm Wonder Tornado fans. Scythe’s published specifications, reproduced by Tom’s Hardware in 2026, list support for current AMD and Intel desktop sockets and clearance for memory modules up to 57 mm. The cooler is 155 mm tall with its fans attached, so case compatibility must be checked against that complete height rather than the heatsink alone.

Specification Scythe Magoroku
Design Dual-tower air cooler
Heatpipes Six copper heatpipes
Fans Two 120 mm Wonder Tornado fans
Fan speed 300–2,000 RPM
Airflow 60.29 CFM per fan specification
Static pressure 2.45 mmH2O per fan specification
Dimensions with fans 134 × 142.5 × 155 mm
Listed RAM clearance Up to 57 mm
AMD sockets AM5 and AM4
Intel sockets LGA1700, LGA1851, LGA1200 and LGA115x
Warranty One year
MSRP $42.99

The dimensions describe the assembled cooler, including both fans. Width and depth also matter around a motherboard’s first PCIe slot and VRM heatsinks, but the most obvious case check is the 155 mm height. A side panel that allows less than that can press against the fan or prevent installation even when the socket area itself is compatible.

Does the Magoroku fit tall RAM?

Scythe rates the Magoroku for memory modules up to 57 mm, but that number depends on fan placement. With the front fan in its default position, a tall DIMM can force the fan upward or leave it overlapping the memory area. Tom’s Hardware found that tall memory under the default front fan can also reduce cooling performance.

The clean solution is to move that fan to the rear of the cooler, above the motherboard’s VRM heatsinks. In that position, the DIMM slots receive complete physical clearance and the performance penalty associated with tall modules is avoided. Use the included fan clips to secure the relocated fan; the package contains three sets, giving you flexibility when positioning both fans.

That arrangement is especially useful with DDR5 kits that use large decorative heat spreaders. Before mounting, measure the installed DIMM height, confirm that the rear fan will not interfere with the rear I/O shroud or VRM heatsink, and verify that your case still accommodates the assembled cooler. The 57 mm figure is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that every motherboard layout will offer identical clearance around its socket.

How do you install the Magoroku on AM5?

AM5 installation is conventional for a dual-tower cooler, but the order matters because the stock retention hardware must be removed before Scythe’s mounting parts are fitted. Set aside enough room to work around the motherboard and decide whether the front fan needs to be moved before you tighten the heatsink.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the stock retention mechanism. Leave the AM5 backplate in place, but remove the motherboard’s factory plastic retention brackets so the supplied studs can be installed.
  2. Install the supplied studs and mounting bars. Fit the AMD hardware to the existing backplate, then position the mounting bars according to the AM5 orientation shown in the instructions.
  3. Apply thermal compound. The package includes a small tube of paste. Apply it to the processor’s heat-spreader area before lowering the cooler.
  4. Seat and bolt down the cooler. Align the tower assembly with the mounting bars and tighten the spring-loaded fasteners evenly, alternating sides so pressure builds uniformly.
  5. Attach both fans with the clips. Install the front fan at its normal height for standard-height memory, or place it at the rear above the VRM heatsinks when tall DIMMs need unobstructed clearance.
  6. Connect the PWM lead. Plug the fan cable into the motherboard’s CPU-fan header and confirm that the connector is fully seated before powering on.

The box includes AMD and Intel mounting hardware, three sets of fan clips, the thermal paste, two Wonder Tornado 120 fans and a screwdriver. Intel installation uses the supplied socket-specific hardware for LGA1700, LGA1851, LGA1200 or LGA115x; consult the included mounting diagram for the correct standoff and bar orientation rather than reusing AMD parts.

After the first boot, check that both fans spin and that the motherboard reports a CPU-fan signal. If a fan rubs against a DIMM or VRM heatsink, shut down and reposition it before running a load test. A small change in fan height can alter both clearance and airflow, so do not force a tall module beneath a fan that is visibly touching it.

How does the Magoroku cool a high-power CPU?

Its CPU performance depends heavily on the processor’s sustained power. Tom’s Hardware tested the cooler in a closed Tryx FLOVA F50 case with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, MSI X870E Carbon WiFi motherboard, MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super graphics card and TeamGroup T-Force Xtreem DDR5-7200 memory. With PBO enabled, the CPU could exceed 260 W and reach its 95 °C TJ Max. On that demanding platform, the Magoroku delivered the weakest maximum-load result among the coolers tested.

Test condition Magoroku result How to read it
Ryzen 9 9950X3D, PBO enabled Weakest CPU thermal result on the test bench; the processor could exceed 260 W and reach 95 °C TJ Max Shows limited headroom for an unrestricted flagship AMD workload
CPU power limited to 200 W Second-warmest cooler tested Still behind stronger options when the processor is capped at a substantial sustained load
150 W CPU plus GPU workload 69.9 °C, or 47.9 °C over ambient Combined heat from the processor and graphics card raises the challenge
Noise-normalized operation 38.9 dBA and 228.7 W average power Indicates how much average power it handled at a fixed acoustic level

The 150 W CPU-plus-GPU test is useful because it resembles a case where the graphics card is also dumping heat into the enclosure. The Magoroku reached 69.9 °C, which was 47.9 °C over ambient, while producing 39.6 dBA in that workload. The result is not a universal temperature promise: it describes one closed case, one processor, one graphics card and one motherboard configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the 200 W limit, the cooler was the second-warmest model in the comparison. That matters for CPUs that sustain high package power for rendering, code compilation, simulation or long-running content-creation jobs. A processor that spends most of its time below that level may not expose the same weakness, while a chip that frequently pushes beyond it will benefit from a cooler with greater thermal capacity.

How loud is the Magoroku?

The Magoroku is moderately quiet rather than silent. Tom’s Hardware measured a maximum of 43.4 dBA, and the 150 W CPU-plus-GPU workload produced 39.6 dBA. In the noise-normalized run, the test point was 38.9 dBA.

Those figures put the Magoroku’s acoustic behavior in a favorable light relative to its CPU temperatures: it did not need extreme fan noise to produce the measured results. The fans are specified to operate from 300 to 2,000 RPM, so motherboard fan control can keep them near the lower end during light work and ramp them as heat rises. The quiet profile is a genuine advantage for a desktop located beside a monitor, but it does not compensate for insufficient thermal headroom on a high-power processor.

Why are the Magoroku’s RAM temperatures so good?

The front 120 mm fan sits directly beside the DIMM area, pushing airflow across the memory heat spreaders as well as through the two fin stacks. That layout explains why the cooler can be merely average on CPU temperature yet unusually effective at keeping nearby DDR5 modules cool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Tom’s Hardware’s Karhu memory testing, the Magoroku averaged 43 °C, which was 21 °C above ambient. It tied for second place after the comparison excluded an all-in-one cooler that used extra fans to cool the VRM area. For users with high-speed DDR5, densely packed DIMM slots or memory that runs for hours under load, this is the Magoroku’s clearest reason to exist.

Remember that the strongest memory result assumes sensible fan placement. If tall modules force the front fan upward, the altered airflow path can reduce performance; moving the fan to the rear restores DIMM clearance and avoids that penalty.

Is the Magoroku good for Ryzen 9?

It is not the first choice for a Ryzen 9 9950X3D running unrestricted, sustained workloads. The review platform reached the processor’s 95 °C junction limit with PBO enabled, and the Magoroku was the weakest CPU cooler in that maximum-load comparison. Even at a 200 W cap, it ranked as the second-warmest model tested.

That does not mean every Ryzen 9 system will show the same temperatures. The test used a particularly demanding processor configuration, and the results will change with power limits, motherboard settings, case airflow and ambient temperature. However, the evidence points away from pairing the Magoroku with a flagship AMD chip when maximum all-core performance is the goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tom’s Hardware’s assessment is that the Magoroku may make more sense for Intel systems than for high-power AMD builds. Treat that as a buying direction rather than a universal Intel benchmark: the available CPU results are from the specified AMD test platform, while socket compatibility alone does not establish equal performance across processors.

What should you buy instead of the Magoroku?

For an AMD buyer spending around the Magoroku’s price, Tom’s Hardware recommends considering Thermalright’s Royal Pretor 130. The recommendation is specifically aimed at the Magoroku’s weak CPU showing at the same price point; it is not a claim that every alternative has identical memory clearance, noise or installation characteristics.

Your priority Magoroku fit Decision guidance
Lowest DDR5 temperatures near the socket Strong Choose the Magoroku if memory-area airflow is a primary requirement.
Quiet operation beside your desk Strong to moderate Its 43.4 dBA maximum and 39.6 dBA combined-load result support a quiet-build rationale.
Unrestricted Ryzen 9 all-core workloads Weak Consider the Royal Pretor 130 at the same price point, as Tom’s Hardware suggests.
Tall DIMMs Conditional Use the 57 mm specification as a starting point and move the front fan to the rear if needed.
Small cases Conditional Confirm at least 155 mm of cooler height with both fans installed.
Long-term warranty coverage Limited The stated warranty is one year, so retain proof of purchase and check the seller’s terms.

If your workload is mostly gaming with moderate CPU power, the Magoroku’s quiet operation and memory cooling can outweigh its weaker flagship result. If your system is designed around sustained rendering or heavily tuned PBO limits, spend the same budget on a model with stronger demonstrated CPU capacity instead.

What are the Magoroku’s main advantages and drawbacks?

  • CPU power: decide whether your processor will run near or above 200 W for long periods.
  • Motherboard surroundings: inspect VRM heatsinks, DIMM latches and the first PCIe slot before tightening the cooler.
  • Fan control: configure a CPU-temperature fan curve and verify the PWM header reports both fans after assembly.
  • Warranty: keep the receipt because the stated coverage is one year.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a cooler have excellent RAM temperatures but weak CPU temperatures?

Memory cooling depends on how directly a fan washes air over the DIMM heat spreaders, while CPU temperature depends on the heatpipe-and-fin assembly’s ability to move sustained processor heat into the case airflow. The Magoroku’s front-fan position favors the first job, but the Ryzen 9 test shows that this advantage does not guarantee high CPU thermal capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 95 °C result mean the Magoroku is unsafe?

No. The result means the tested Ryzen 9 9950X3D reached its reported 95 °C TJ Max under the specified PBO configuration. It identifies limited headroom on that test system, not a safety verdict for every processor or a prediction that every Magoroku installation will reach the same temperature.

Can I compare the 43 °C RAM figure directly with my own PC?

Use it as a directional comparison, not a guaranteed reading. Tom’s Hardware measured it with TeamGroup T-Force Xtreem DDR5-7200 memory, a particular motherboard, case, ambient condition and Karhu workload; changing any of those can change the result.

What is the most important installation mistake to avoid?

Do not leave a tall DIMM pressing against a front fan simply because the specification lists 57 mm of support. Reposition the fan to the rear above the VRM heatsinks, secure it with the supplied clips and confirm that the case and motherboard shrouds still provide clearance before powering on.
