Schlage Sense Pro (BE889) is worth its $399 price only for a specific buyer: someone with an Apple-centered home, a compatible Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, and an iPhone or Apple Watch that supports UWB Home Key. In that setup, the deadbolt can unlock as you approach, without a key, app launch, or keypad entry. It also offers Home Key tap, a touchscreen keypad, app control, one-touch locking, scheduled auto-lock, and up to 250 shared codes.
It is a poor match if you use Android, need a traditional keyway, want fingerprint entry, or are minimizing cost. The no-keyhole design is elegant but removes mechanical-key fallback, and battery life depends heavily on radio configuration. Here is how the hands-free system works, what ownership requires, and when a less Apple-focused lock makes more sense.
What is Schlage Sense Pro, and who is it for?
Sense Pro is Schlage’s BE889 premium smart deadbolt, announced June 16, 2026, and scheduled for retail availability from June 29, 2026. Schlage announced a U.S. price of $399 through Amazon, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Schlage.com. Its defining feature is ultra-wideband (UWB) walk-up unlocking through Apple Home Key.

The result is hands-free entry when the supported hardware, software, and home network are all in place.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Who should buy it?
- Apple households with a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and supported iPhone or Apple Watch models.
- People who value walk-up unlocking more than a low purchase price.
- Families, hosts, and caregivers who need many temporary or scheduled codes.
- Buyers comfortable with a touchscreen-only exterior and no physical key cylinder.
Who should skip it?
- Android users who want hands-free unlocking; that capability was not available at launch.
- Anyone who insists on a conventional key override.
- Renters or homeowners who cannot add an Apple Home hub or improve Thread coverage.
- Shoppers seeking fingerprint entry or a lower-cost smart lock.
How does UWB Apple Home Key walk-up unlocking work?
UWB measures proximity and direction more precisely than ordinary Bluetooth discovery. When an authorized device approaches, Sense Pro uses the Home Key credential and UWB interaction to decide whether to unlock. In Tom’s Guide testing, the lock opened at roughly one foot away and did not unlock when the reviewer simply lingered nearby.
The Verge reported that walk-up unlocking was fast and reliable in testing. Popular Mechanics likewise described approach unlocking as fast and consistent, writing, “The first time I approached my front door and it automatically unlocked, I felt like my house was waiting for me to arrive.” Actual behavior still depends on phone position, permissions, radio coverage, and the selected hands-free mode.
What hands-free modes are available?
The Schlage Home app lists three hands-free modes: intuitive, touch, and delay. These labels let you choose how much approach detection and user interaction the lock expects. The exact timing and interaction are configured in the app, so select the mode that best balances convenience and accidental-unlock resistance for your entryway.

Does walk-up unlocking work with every iPhone?
No. Schlage specifies iPhone 11 and later on iOS 18.5 or later, but excludes the second- and third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 16e. Apple Watch support starts with Series 6 on watchOS 11.5 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE models. A newer-looking phone is not automatically eligible; check the model and operating-system version before buying.
Do you need an Apple Home hub or Thread router?
Yes, hands-free Home Key requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. Compatible examples listed by Schlage include Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and a compatible Thread border router. Without one, you can still use the lock’s other entry methods, but the defining walk-up feature is unavailable.
Thread is the low-power mesh network used for Matter connectivity. The hub or border router must be positioned so the lock receives a dependable Thread signal. The Verge’s reviewer repeatedly failed to pair Sense Pro with Apple Home until improving Thread coverage and moving the border router, showing that a supported hub alone does not guarantee an easy installation.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What should you check before installation?
- Confirm that your iPhone or Apple Watch model is not one of Schlage’s exclusions and that it runs the required operating system.
- Confirm that an Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or compatible Thread border router is present and online.
- Place the hub within reliable Thread range of the door; avoid hiding it behind dense cabinetry or far across the home.
- Decide whether Apple Home, the Schlage Home app, or both will be your primary control path.
- Plan a fallback entry method, such as a keypad code or Home Key tap, before handing over the old lock.
Schlage supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Matter over Thread. Tom’s Guide connected the lock to Apple Home over Thread and the Schlage app over Wi-Fi, but Schlage says that dual setup is not recommended. Running both networks may add complexity and can affect power consumption, so use the simplest arrangement that meets your needs.
What ways can you unlock and lock Sense Pro?
Sense Pro does not rely on a single credential. You can use hands-free Home Key, NFC Home Key tap, the touchscreen keypad, Schlage Home app controls, or shared access codes. One-touch locking and timed auto-lock reduce the chance of leaving the door unsecured.
Hands-free Home Key
Approach unlocking is the feature that differentiates Sense Pro. It is convenient when your phone or watch is in a pocket or bag, but it is limited to the Apple hardware and software listed above.
NFC Home Key tap
A supported iPhone or Apple Watch can tap to unlock with Home Key. This is more deliberate than walk-up unlocking and gives you a practical alternative when you do not want the door to react automatically.
Touchscreen keypad
The exterior keypad accepts individual codes. Popular Mechanics found the minimalist, normally blank screen less obvious to guests, so visitors may need a brief explanation to wake it and enter their code. The screen’s understated appearance is attractive, but it trades discoverability for a cleaner facade.

App control and one-touch locking
The Schlage Home app provides remote control and code management, while one-touch locking lets you secure the door from the exterior without entering a code. Timed auto-lock and daily schedules can automate locking for predictable routines.

Shared and scheduled codes
Schlage says Sense Pro can manage up to 250 unique access codes. That capacity suits households, cleaners, contractors, and short-term guests, especially when codes need time limits or daily schedules rather than permanent access.
Does Sense Pro have a keyhole or mechanical override?
No. The exterior has no traditional keyway. Popular Mechanics specifically noted the lack of a keyhole and the presence of an exterior USB-C emergency-power port.
The keyless design prevents lock picking through a conventional cylinder and gives the front escutcheon a clean appearance, but it also removes the familiar mechanical fallback. Before installation, decide where you will keep a charged phone, an authorized watch, or a reliable keypad code. If your household requires a physical key for emergencies, this model is the wrong design regardless of its UWB performance.
How long do the batteries last, and what happens when they die?
Sense Pro uses four AA batteries. Schlage’s standard-use estimate is up to six months, while Schlage’s launch materials and Popular Mechanics list up to nine months in their specifications. The Verge reported more than nine months on Thread in its testing. These figures are not interchangeable guarantees: radio mode, network topology, lock activity, temperature, and configuration all affect runtime.
| Evidence or configuration | Battery figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Schlage standard-use estimate | Up to six months | Manufacturer estimate for standard usage; treat as the conservative planning figure. |
| Popular Mechanics specification | Up to nine months | Published product specification, not a controlled independent endurance test. |
| The Verge on Thread | Nine-plus months | Reviewer result under that test configuration, not a universal lifespan. |
| Tom’s Guide | 51% remaining after a couple of weeks | Configuration-specific observation while using Apple Home over Thread and Schlage app over Wi-Fi; Schlage does not recommend that dual setup. |
The lock includes a USB-C jumpstart port for temporary power. If the AA cells are exhausted, connect a power source to that exterior port, unlock with an authorized method, and replace all four batteries. Keep the emergency-power procedure and a suitable cable accessible; the port is a recovery measure, not a substitute for routine battery replacement.
How should you manage battery risk?
- Enable the lock’s low-battery notifications in the controlling app and act on them rather than waiting for failure.
- Use one primary network path where possible, because Schlage does not recommend the Apple Home-plus-Schlage Wi-Fi dual arrangement.
- Replace the full set of four AA batteries together with the type specified in the installation instructions.
- Test the USB-C jumpstart procedure before an emergency so you know where the port is and which power source works.
How secure is Schlage Sense Pro?
Popular Mechanics lists a BHMA Grade 2 rating. That is a recognized residential hardware grade, but it is not an independent long-term failure-rate or hacking score. No independent laboratory security score or multi-year reliability statistic is established for this model.

Matter certification data identifies Thread transport, hardware version A, and firmware version 00.26.969033 for one Sense Pro certification entry. Matter improves interoperability between supported smart-home platforms; it does not make every feature, especially UWB walk-up unlocking, available on every platform.

The no-keyway design removes mechanical-cylinder attacks, while the app and keypad introduce the usual responsibilities: protect account credentials, remove unused codes, and avoid sharing a permanent code with temporary visitors. The available evidence does not establish whether a separate tamper alarm is included, so do not assume one without checking the current installation documentation.
How does Sense Pro compare with Aqara U400 and other smart locks?
The meaningful comparison is not simply “which lock has more features.” It is whether you need Apple-only UWB convenience, a physical-key fallback, broader platform support, or a lower total cost after adding hubs. The following table separates what is documented for Sense Pro from items you should verify on the U400 or another candidate before purchase.
| Decision point | Schlage Sense Pro BE889 | Aqara U400 or another alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-free method | UWB Apple Home Key walk-up unlocking; iPhone 11+ and Apple Watch Series 6+ with stated exclusions. | Verify whether UWB walk-up unlocking is supported, which phones qualify, and whether the feature works outside one ecosystem. |
| Apple Home requirement | Thread-enabled Apple Home hub required for hands-free Home Key. | Check whether a hub is required, which radio it uses, and whether the hub is included or an extra purchase. |
| Android hands-free support | Not available at launch. | Verify current Android support; app control is not the same as automatic approach unlocking. |
| Entry methods | UWB, NFC/Home Key tap, touchscreen keypad, app, one-touch locking, and shared codes; no keyhole or fingerprint reader documented. | Compare physical keyway, fingerprint sensor, NFC, keypad, app, and code-sharing options for your household. |
| Codes | Up to 250 unique codes, with timed auto-lock and daily schedules. | Confirm code capacity, scheduling, and whether guest management requires a subscription. |
| Power and recovery | Four AA batteries, USB-C jumpstart port, manufacturer estimate up to six months; reviewer results vary by radio mode. | Compare battery type, expected life by radio mode, low-battery alerts, and emergency-power method. |
| Security information | BHMA Grade 2 listed by Popular Mechanics; Matter certification entry uses Thread. | Verify the actual BHMA or equivalent grade, certification record, tamper behavior, and mechanical override. |
| Price | $399 U.S. launch price announced by Schlage for 2026. | Check the current U.S. price and add any required hub to calculate total cost. |
A U400 can be the better value if it delivers the entry method and platform coverage your household actually uses at a lower installed cost. Sense Pro earns its premium only when UWB Home Key and Apple integration are priorities; keypad access alone does not justify paying for hardware you will not use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is installation and setup like?
Installation follows the normal smart-deadbolt process, but network commissioning deserves extra attention. The physical work is straightforward only when the existing door preparation is compatible and the bolt moves freely without pushing or pulling the door.
- Remove the existing deadbolt and verify that the bore, backset, door thickness, and strike alignment match the Sense Pro installation requirements.
- Install the exterior touchscreen assembly, interior motor unit, and strike plate, keeping the bolt centered in the frame.
- Insert the four AA batteries and complete the lock’s calibration or handing procedure in the Schlage Home app.
- Add the lock to your chosen control system: Schlage Home over its supported connection or Apple Home over Thread.
- Place the Thread-enabled hub or border router where the lock has stable coverage, then test locking, unlocking, and status reporting from inside and outside the home.
- Set up Home Key, create a personal keypad code, and add a separate temporary code before relying on hands-free entry.
- Test one-touch locking, auto-lock timing, low-battery notifications, and the USB-C jumpstart procedure.
What if Apple Home pairing fails?
Start with Thread coverage rather than repeatedly resetting the lock. Move the Apple TV, HomePod, or border router closer, remove obstructions, update iOS and the hub software, and retry pairing. The Verge’s experience shows that border-router placement can be the difference between repeated failures and a successful setup.

Is the $399 price worth it?
The price is justified when hands-free Apple Home Key changes how you use the door every day. It is not justified if you will mostly type a code, tap a phone, or use a generic app, because less expensive locks can provide those basic actions.
Reasons the premium can make sense
- Walk-up unlocking is fast and reliable in independent hands-on testing.
- Apple Home, NFC Home Key, keypad, app, one-touch locking, schedules, and a large code capacity cover different users.
- Matter over Thread gives the lock a standards-based connectivity path in addition to Schlage’s app.
- The exterior USB-C port offers a practical recovery option despite the lack of a keyway.
Reasons to spend less
- You do not own a qualifying Apple device or Thread-enabled hub.
- You need Android hands-free unlocking, fingerprint entry, or a physical key.
- Your door is in a location where Thread coverage is difficult to maintain.
- You are unwilling to monitor batteries and manage a keyless emergency plan.
What is the final verdict on Schlage Sense Pro?
Schlage Sense Pro is a polished, specialized smart deadbolt rather than a universal replacement for every lock. For an Apple household with the right hub and a qualifying iPhone or Apple Watch, UWB walk-up unlocking is a genuinely useful convenience, and the keypad, Home Key tap, codes, schedules, and app provide sensible alternatives. For Android users, physical-key buyers, and value shoppers, its $399 price and ecosystem limits outweigh the novelty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Sense Pro if my home has no internet connection?
Local methods such as a keypad code or Home Key interaction may still work when cloud access is unavailable, but remote app control and notifications depend on the network path you configured. Test the lock with your router offline before treating local operation as an emergency guarantee.
Can several family members share one Apple Home Key?
Each person should receive their own authorized Home Key or keypad code rather than sharing an Apple account. Individual credentials make it possible to remove one person’s access without changing everyone else’s entry method.
Will the blank touchscreen work in rain or with gloves?
The available product information does not establish a weather-specific glove or wet-screen performance rating. Check the current installation and environmental specifications, then test the keypad with the gloves and conditions your household actually uses.
What should I do before selling or moving out of the house?
Delete guest codes, remove the lock from Apple Home and the Schlage app, and perform a factory reset according to the current manual. Also remove the lock from any household access-sharing groups so former residents cannot retain a digital credential.
