Yes—if you need a durable, induction-ready saucepan for family-size everyday cooking, the Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L is a well-specified choice. Its 18/10 stainless-steel body, 6.4mm aluminium-core bonded base, tempered-glass lid, internal volume marks and drip-free rim make it more versatile than a small 1–2L pan. The trade-offs are its greater weight when full, the possibility of stainless-steel heat tint, and conflicting retailer oven ratings.
Use the conservative oven limits of 220°C with the lid and 250°C without it, handwash when preserving the finish matters, and confirm warranty terms for your country. The detailed scores from Consumer NZ’s June 2025 saucepan test are subscriber-only, so this review evaluates the published construction, specifications and care guidance rather than claiming a test ranking.
What exactly is the Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L saucepan?
The reviewed product is a covered saucepan with a 20cm diameter and 3.5L stated capacity. It is made from 18/10 stainless steel and uses an aluminium-core, impact-bonded base. Kitchen Warehouse specifies a 6.4mm bonded base, while the manufacturer describes the Impact range as having a 6.4mm sandwich base.
The exterior combines matt and polished stainless-steel surfaces. A tempered-glass lid lets you watch the contents, and the rim is designed to pour with fewer drips. Stainless-steel handles are cast or riveted to the pan, and volume markings inside the vessel let you measure liquids without a separate jug.

| Specification | Published detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | 20cm | A medium footprint that stores more easily than a stockpot while still providing useful capacity. |
| Capacity | 3.5L | Suitable for larger sauces, soups, grains, vegetables and small pasta batches. |
| Body | 18/10 stainless steel | Resists corrosion and does not react with ordinary acidic ingredients. |
| Base | 6.4mm aluminium-core impact-bonded or sandwich base | Aluminium transfers heat through the base; the stainless exterior supplies durability and cooktop compatibility. |
| Lid | Tempered glass | Allows visual monitoring without lifting the lid and releasing heat. |
| Rim | Drip-free design | Helps control pouring of sauces, stocks and cooking water. |
| Interior | Capacity markings | Useful for adding measured liquids directly in the pan. |
SCANPAN describes the design as having a “stylish two tone matt/polished appearance” and says the glass lid fits the saucepan and steamer, allowing you to view cooking in progress. The 3.5L figure is the manufacturer’s stated capacity; usable working volume will be lower when you need room for bubbling or stirring.
How does the aluminium-core base affect cooking?
The bonded base is the pan’s main heat-management feature. Aluminium conducts heat more readily than stainless steel, so the core spreads energy across the base while the stainless-steel cooking surface remains hard-wearing and easy to use with metal utensils.
This construction should help reduce the concentrated hot spot that a thin, single-layer stainless base can produce. However, no independent heat-map, temperature survey or laboratory result was available for this model, so an exact evenness advantage or boil-time improvement cannot be quantified. Use a burner close to the base diameter and preheat gradually rather than relying on maximum power.

- It cannot prevent food from sticking if a dry pan is overheated or delicate ingredients are added before the fat and pan are ready.
- It does not make the pan weightless; a 3.5L stainless saucepan will be more cumbersome when filled than a 1–2L model.
- It does not eliminate the need to match the burner size to the 20cm base.
Is the Scanpan Impact induction compatible?
Yes. Published specifications list the saucepan for induction, gas, ceramic, halogen, radiant-ring and solid-plate cooktops. The magnetic induction field heats the bonded base, while the same base transfers heat on conventional electric and gas burners.
On induction, place the pan centrally and select a moderate setting until you learn how quickly your hob responds. On gas, keep flames under the base rather than climbing the sidewalls; this protects the finish and handles. Ceramic, radiant-ring and solid-plate users should lift rather than drag the pan to avoid scratching the glass or hob surface.

Can the saucepan go in the oven?
Yes, but use the conservative limits because retailer listings conflict. Kitchen Warehouse lists 220°C with the lid and 250°C without it. Bunnings lists the item as oven-safe to 260°C. Until the instructions supplied with your pan establish a different limit for your market, stay at or below 220°C with the glass lid and 250°C with the lid removed.
| Configuration | Conservative working limit | Published variation | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pan with tempered-glass lid | 220°C | One retailer lists this limit; the higher 260°C listing does not distinguish lid use. | Use 220°C or lower unless your supplied manual gives a lower limit. |
| Pan without lid | 250°C | Another retailer lists 260°C for the product generally. | Use 250°C or lower as the cautious ceiling. |
Always check the care leaflet and label supplied in your country, particularly if the lid has a metal knob or any removable component. Stainless-steel handles can become hot in an oven even when they feel comfortable on the hob, so use oven gloves when moving the pan.

- Start a sauce or stew on the cooktop, then finish it gently in the oven.
- Keep grains, custards or vegetables warm without transferring them to a baking dish.
- Brown ingredients on the hob before adding liquid and covering for a slow finish.
Do not move the hot pan directly onto a cold, wet surface, and do not rinse it with cold water. The sudden temperature change can stress the metal and glass through thermal shock.
What can you cook in a 3.5L saucepan?
This is a medium-to-large household saucepan rather than a single-serving pot. The capacity suits sauces, soups, custards, grains, steamed or boiled vegetables and small pasta batches. It is also practical for reducing stock or making a double batch of a recipe written for a smaller pan, provided there is enough headroom for stirring and bubbling.
Tasks that fit the format
- Sauces: tomato, cream, curry and gravy recipes have room for whisking and reduction.
- Soups and stocks: useful for several portions, though a large family batch may require a stockpot.
- Grains and pulses: the internal marks help add measured water or stock.
- Custards: the broad 20cm base gives room to stir continuously and inspect the mixture through the lid between checks.
- Vegetables and small pasta batches: enough water for everyday portions without the footprint of a full-size pot.
Capacity is not the same as recommended fill level. Leave space for expansion and vigorous boiling, especially with pasta, grains and foaming legumes. When the pan is full, expect more lifting effort and slower handling than with a compact 1–2L saucepan; that is a practical consequence of the larger volume, not a published weight measurement.

Are the lid and handles useful in daily cooking?
They are designed to make monitoring and pouring easier. The tempered-glass lid lets you check simmering, foaming or evaporation without lifting it, while the drip-free rim helps direct liquid back into a bowl or jug.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe stainless-steel handles are intended to remain cooler for longer than the pan body during stovetop use, but they can still heat up, particularly on gas, in a hot oven or when the pan is left over a large burner. Treat them as potentially hot and keep a dry oven glove nearby. A dry glove gives better grip than a damp cloth, which can conduct heat rapidly.
The 20cm diameter is a compromise: it provides a generous cooking surface and 3.5L capacity while taking less storage space than a stockpot. Check your cupboard height and shelf depth with the lid fitted if you plan to store it assembled.
How should you clean and protect the stainless-steel finish?
The pan is dishwasher-safe, but the care guidance recommends handwashing when preserving the finish is a priority. Handwashing also lets you remove starch, dairy or sugary residue before it bakes on during a later cycle.
- Let the pan cool before washing; never rinse a hot pan with cold water.
- Soak stuck-on food in warm water and use a non-abrasive sponge or soft brush.
- Wash the lid carefully and dry both pieces to prevent water spots.
- For rainbow or brown heat tint, apply a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, allow it to work briefly, then rinse and dry.
- If the polished areas need more shine, use a stainless-steel cleaner recommended for cookware and follow its label directions.
What to avoid
- Do not use thermal shock: moving a hot pan into cold water is the main avoidable stress.
- Do not leave salty or acidic residue to dry on the surface for long periods.
- Do not use harsh scouring methods that can dull the matt or polished finish.
- Do not assume a dishwasher cycle will preserve the appearance as well as handwashing; detergent and heat can gradually reduce surface lustre.
Heat tint is cosmetic and does not by itself mean the bonded base has failed. Cleaning it after the pan has cooled is safer than trying to remove it while the metal is still hot.

What warranty and manufacturing information is available?
Australian retailer listings state a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Minimax lists the saucepan as designed in Denmark and made in China. Warranty duration, exclusions and the party responsible for service can vary by country, so confirm the terms shown for your market before purchase.
Keep the receipt, order confirmation and any warranty card. A manufacturing-defect warranty generally does not cover damage from misuse, overheating, impact, commercial wear or cosmetic changes caused by ordinary cleaning, but the precise exclusions are determined by the local warranty document.
What does independent testing say?
Consumer NZ included this model in a 13-saucepan test updated in June 2025 and displayed a price of NZ$220. The detailed performance scores are subscriber-gated on the accessible page, so a numerical ranking, score or category result cannot be verified from the public information.
The published test categories are performance, evenness of cooking, water-boiling speed and ease of use. Those are sensible criteria for comparing this pan with another 20cm stainless model, but do not treat the existence of the test as proof that the Scanpan achieved a particular result.
How should you compare it with another saucepan?
Compare like with like: capacity, base construction and published safety limits matter more than a superficial finish. The following framework keeps the decision practical without inventing scores that have not been published.

| Comparison question | What to check | Why it affects your choice |
|---|---|---|
| Heat distribution and boiling | Base thickness, bonded-core construction and any independently published evenness or boil-speed results | A thicker, well-bonded base may spread heat better, but only controlled testing can establish the size of the benefit. |
| Capacity and footprint | Stated litres, diameter and working headroom | 3.5L handles larger portions but occupies more shelf space and is heavier when full. |
| Cooktop and oven use | Induction approval and separate lid/pan oven limits | A general “oven-safe” label is incomplete if the glass lid has a lower limit. |
| Lid and pouring control | Glass visibility, fit, rim design and handle shape | These features affect monitoring, spill control and transfer to serving vessels. |
| Cleaning and stain resistance | Dishwasher claim, handwashing guidance and finish-recovery instructions | Stainless steel is durable but can show heat tint and water marks. |
| Warranty and support | Local duration, defect definition, proof-of-purchase rules and retailer service | A 10-year listing is useful only when its terms apply in your country. |
| Price and availability | Current local price, stock and returns policy | Retail prices and availability change, so verify them at the time you order. |
Who should buy the Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L?
Choose it if you want one stainless-steel saucepan that works across induction and conventional cooktops, can move from hob to oven within cautious temperature limits, and offers enough volume for family cooking without becoming a stockpot. The internal marks, visible lid and controlled-pour rim are practical advantages for cooks who measure and transfer liquids in the same vessel.
Look for a smaller pan if most of your cooking is one-person sauces, reheating or small portions. A different format may also be preferable if you regularly make very large soup or pasta batches that need a taller stockpot. The 3.5L model is best understood as an all-purpose middle-to-large saucepan, not a universal replacement for every pot in a kitchen.
Advantages and limitations at a glance
| Advantages | Limitations and cautions |
|---|---|
| 18/10 stainless body with a 6.4mm aluminium-core bonded base | No public independent heat-map or numerical performance score |
| Induction, gas, ceramic, halogen, radiant-ring and solid-plate compatibility | Retailer oven ratings conflict; use 220°C with lid and 250°C without as conservative limits |
| 3.5L capacity in a 20cm footprint | Heavier and less nimble when full than a 1–2L saucepan |
| Tempered-glass lid for monitoring | Glass and handles still require careful handling when hot |
| Internal capacity marks and drip-free rim | Stainless finish can develop heat tint or water marks |
| Dishwasher-safe construction | Handwashing is recommended to preserve appearance |
| Australian listings cite a 10-year manufacturing-defect warranty | Local warranty terms and service procedures may differ |
Final buying verdict
The Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L is a credible everyday saucepan for cooks who value stainless-steel durability, induction compatibility and a capacity large enough for multi-portion meals. Its strongest case is the combination of a substantial bonded base, useful measurement marks, a viewing lid and a controlled-pour rim.

Buy with two checks in mind: confirm the warranty in your country and follow the lower oven limits unless your supplied instructions explicitly allow more. If you accept the size and are prepared to handwash when appearance matters, the specification supports a long-term role for sauces, soups, grains, custards and vegetables.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 18/10 stainless steel mean in this saucepan?
The designation refers to the approximate chromium and nickel content of the stainless alloy: about 18% chromium and 10% nickel. Chromium supports corrosion resistance, while nickel helps maintain a stable, non-reactive surface and the bright finish.
Will the pan’s capacity markings replace a measuring jug?
They can measure liquids added directly to the saucepan, which is convenient for stock, water and sauces. For precise baking or recipes that require checking volume away from the pan, a separate calibrated jug is still more practical.
Why can stainless steel develop rainbow heat marks?
Thin mineral or oxide films can form when stainless steel is heated strongly, creating blue, purple or brown colours. The marks are generally cosmetic; letting the pan cool and using a bicarbonate-of-soda paste or suitable stainless cleaner can restore the appearance.

Does the 10-year warranty apply worldwide?
No universal term is established by the retailer listings. The cited 10-year period comes from Australian listings, so buyers elsewhere should read the local warranty statement and retain proof of purchase.
