Steam’s built-in Backup and Restore Games workflow lets you save installed game content and restore it on another Steam installation, reusing those files instead of downloading the entire original installation again. It does not guarantee a zero-download restore: updates, missing files, or other content may still need to be downloaded. Steam also offers separate ways to move an existing installation or transfer game files from another PC on your local network.

Which Steam method should you use?

Choose based on where the game files are now. A stored backup is for files you have set aside; migration is for an installation that still exists and is being moved; local network transfer is for a second compatible PC that already has the game installed. These methods reuse existing content in different ways, and none should be treated as a universal promise that Steam will not need to download anything.

Method Where the source files are What it is for Save handling Another PC required?
Backup and Restore Games In backup files you retained or moved Restore backed-up game content through Steam’s restore workflow Check saves separately; the backup guidance does not establish that every game’s progress is included No, provided you have access to the stored files
Move a Steam Installation and Games In the existing Steam installation Move an installation and its games while preserving the files and directories in Steam’s migration procedure Check saves separately No, if the original installation can be moved directly
Local Network Game Transfers On another PC on the same local network Transfer installation content from the PC that has the game Local save games and configuration files are not transferred Yes; a compatible PC with the game installed must be available

Steam Support describes these in Backing Up and Restoring Games, Moving a Steam Installation and Games, and Local Network Game Transfers. Their publication dates are not established here, so the support article names—not an assumed publication year—are the useful references.

The practical decision is therefore about the source, not a promised speed ranking. If the old computer is being retired but you created an archive, restore that archive. If the old Steam installation is intact on a drive, use the migration procedure. If both computers are running and connected to the same network, local transfer can reuse the installed content without first creating a separate archive.

What should I check before backing up?

Do a short preparation check before opening the backup command. It prevents an incomplete source from becoming the only copy you can restore.

  • Finish the game’s download and updates. Steam’s backup eligibility guidance concerns fully downloaded and updated content. Wait for all queued activity to finish for every title you plan to select.
  • Know where the output will live. The generated backup files can be copied or moved, so choose a location you can access later and that has room for the selected files.
  • Plan for saves separately. Installation data, local saves, and configuration files are different categories. Check the individual game’s save location and whether it uses Steam Cloud.
  • Keep the original until testing is complete. A completed backup operation only proves that Steam created files; it does not prove that the files can be read during a future restore.

You do not need to purchase a particular storage device to use Steam’s free backup command. An external SSD for Steam game backups, an external hard drive, or—when the individual backup fits— a USB flash drive can provide a convenient place to retain or transport the generated files. Select storage according to the amount of data you need to keep and how portable you want the backup to be; Steam does not specify a required brand.

How do I back up installed Steam games?

Use Steam’s backup workflow after the games you intend to save are fully downloaded and updated. Steam’s support guidance ties backup eligibility to fully downloaded and updated content, so check that status before starting.

  1. Finish downloads and updates. In Steam, confirm that each selected game has completed its download and update activity. If a title is still updating, let that finish before backing it up.
  2. Open the backup workflow. In the Steam client, open Backup and Restore Games, then choose Backup currently installed games. These are Steam’s documented interface labels; client menus can change over time.
  3. Select the games. Choose the installed games you want in the backup and follow Steam’s prompts. You can make a set for one title or select several installed titles, depending on what the client offers.
  4. Choose a destination and complete the prompts. Save the generated files somewhere you can retain and locate later. Steam permits the backup result to be copied or moved, so it can be stored on another drive if that suits your setup.
  5. Keep the complete backup together. Do not discard or separate files you may need for restoration. When you restore, Steam needs to be pointed to the backup files.
  6. Record what you backed up. Keep a simple note of the selected games and the date of the backup. This helps you distinguish an older archive from a newer one when a game has received updates.
  7. Check the backup before depending on it. Valve recommends testing backup media after creation to check file integrity for a future reinstallation. A backup that has never been checked should not be treated as a proven replacement for the installed copy.

Testing does not mean launching every game immediately, but it should give you confidence that the retained files are accessible and usable. Keep the source installation until you have completed a restore test or otherwise confirmed that the backup is reliable.

How do I restore Steam games from a backup?

Make the backup files accessible on the destination PC, then restore them through Steam’s documented workflow. Use Restore a previous backup rather than assuming that copying files directly into a game folder is equivalent.

  1. Connect or access the backup. Make sure the destination PC can browse to the backup files you kept. If they are on removable storage, connect it before opening the restore command.
  2. Open Steam’s restore workflow. In the client, open Backup and Restore Games and choose Restore a previous backup.
  3. Locate the backup files. Select the location containing the saved backup and follow Steam’s installation prompts. Let Steam complete the process rather than interrupting it to copy individual folders.
  4. Check the restored installation. Launch the game and confirm that it opens as expected. If files appear incomplete or the game does not work correctly, use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files function.
  5. Check progress separately. Confirm that the game’s saves are where you expect them to be. Installed game files and personal progress are separate concerns; do not assume a successful game restore also restored every save.
  6. Keep the backup until you are satisfied. Do not erase the retained files immediately after the first launch. A second launch and a check of the game’s save menu provide a safer confirmation than the installer’s completion message alone.

Verification checks the game installation files, and Steam may reacquire missing or failed files. It is therefore a repair step, not a guaranteed offline operation. Steam Support documents this in Verify Integrity of Game Files.

What if Steam cannot find my backup?

Start by confirming that you selected the folder containing Steam’s generated backup files, not merely a parent folder or an unrelated copy of the installed game. Keep the generated files together when moving them between drives. If the destination can browse to the files but the restore workflow still cannot use them, avoid improvising a direct folder replacement; the documented restore path is the one Steam supports for these backup files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also distinguish a backup archive from an existing installation. A folder copied from a game library is not automatically the same thing as the output created by Backup currently installed games. If your source is an intact Steam installation rather than a generated backup, switch to Steam’s Moving a Steam Installation and Games procedure.

When should I move an existing Steam installation instead?

If the original installation is still available and your goal is to migrate it to another machine or drive, follow Steam Support’s Moving a Steam Installation and Games procedure. That is distinct from creating a reusable backup archive and restoring it later.

Follow the files-and-directories instructions in Steam’s migration procedure rather than copying only one game-content folder or improvising a partial file-manifest procedure. The documented migration is the relevant guide for preserving an existing installation; the backup-and-restore labels describe a different workflow.

Migration is most relevant when the source installation is intact and available to move. If you instead want to keep a separate set of reusable files, use Backup currently installed games and retain its output. If the files are on another PC on the same network, local transfer may be more appropriate.

Can Steam transfer a game from another PC on my network?

Yes. Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers feature can transfer installation content from a compatible PC on the same local network that already has the game installed. It is a transfer between PCs, not a stored offline archive.

Steam explicitly says that local save games and configuration files are not sent by this method: “Only file content part of the original game is transferred, no local save games or configuration files are sent.” Keep that distinction in mind if the game’s progress or settings matter. Local network transfer also does not guarantee that Steam will need no other downloads.

This option makes sense when the source PC is available and you want to reuse its installed content without first writing a removable archive. It is not a substitute for a backup you can keep after the source PC is gone. If you need a durable copy, create and retain Steam’s backup files instead.

Why might Steam still download files after a restore?

Restoring backup data reduces the need to fetch the original game content again, but it is not a blanket guarantee of zero network traffic. Steam may need to download updates or content that is missing or does not pass a file check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The game was not fully updated before backup: Steam’s backup eligibility guidance concerns fully downloaded and updated content. Complete downloads and updates before creating a backup intended for reuse.
  • Some files are missing or fail verification: Run Verify integrity of game files. Steam may reacquire the files it identifies as missing or failed.
  • The game has received updates since the backup was made: A backup preserves the content captured when it was created; it should not be treated as a promise that the restored game is already current.
  • You used local network transfer: The transferred installation content does not include local saves or settings, and other content may still need to be downloaded.
  • The installation needs a current check: Verification can contact Steam and reacquire files, so schedule it when the destination has network access if you need the repaired installation to be complete.

There is no universal download-savings figure or transfer-speed guarantee for these methods. The amount of data reused depends on the files available and the game’s current content.

How should I protect saves and settings?

Treat installed game content, local saves, and configuration files as separate data. A successful installation restore does not by itself prove that a game’s progress or settings were preserved.

  • Check the individual game’s save information. Steam Cloud support is game-dependent, so do not assume every title synchronizes its saves.
  • Check the save location or instructions provided for that game. The Steam backup and migration workflows described here do not establish uniform save coverage across all titles.
  • Be especially careful with LAN transfer. Steam states that local save games and configuration files are not included in local network game transfers.
  • Verify progress after restoring. Launch the game and check its save menu or other in-game progress indicator before deleting any original copy you still have.
  • Do not confuse settings with installation files. A game can launch successfully while having lost key bindings, graphics preferences, or local configuration data.

Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation is the place to check cloud behavior, while the game’s own support information can clarify its save handling. Neither the existence of a Steam backup nor a completed LAN transfer is sufficient evidence that a particular game’s progress is protected.

What is the safest workflow for a no-redownload move?

If minimizing downloads matters, use the path that matches the source files, then keep a fallback until the destination installation and saves are confirmed. Steam’s support material does not promise zero downloads for any of these routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the source method. Use Backup and Restore for saved backup files, Steam’s migration instructions for an existing installation, or Local Network Game Transfers when another suitable PC is on the same network.
  2. Preserve the source until you verify the destination. Do not remove the only usable copy before the game launches and its progress has been checked.
  3. Use Steam’s restore or migration instructions rather than an improvised copy. Each route has its own procedure; copying a folder is not the same as following the documented workflow.
  4. Repair installation files if needed. Use Verify integrity of game files if the restored game appears incomplete, understanding that Steam can download files during verification.
  5. Confirm saves independently. Check the game’s save behavior and progress rather than equating installed content with preserved game state.
  6. Allow for post-restore updates. Once the game is working, Steam may still update it to the current release. That is normal and does not mean the backup failed.

Storage choices and practical cost considerations

A separate drive is optional, not a prerequisite. Steam’s command creates the backup; an external SSD, external hard drive, or suitably sized USB flash drive is simply a place to retain or transport the resulting files. Choose based on how much game data you need to store, whether you want the drive to remain attached, and whether you need to carry it between computers.

Do not buy storage on the assumption that a particular brand, speed rating, or capacity is guaranteed by Steam. The relevant requirement is that the destination can hold the generated backup files and that the files remain accessible when you restore. Keeping a second copy can reduce the risk of losing the only archive, but the Steam procedure itself does not prescribe a number of copies or a specific device.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Backing up while updates are still running: finish the selected games’ downloads and updates first.
  • Deleting the source immediately: test the backup and verify the restored game and saves before removing the original.
  • Copying only a game folder: use Steam’s documented backup, restore, or migration workflow instead of treating an arbitrary folder copy as equivalent.
  • Expecting saves from LAN transfer: local saves and configuration files are explicitly excluded from that transfer.
  • Assuming verification is offline: Steam can reacquire missing or failed files during file verification.
  • Assuming every game uses Steam Cloud: cloud coverage is game-dependent and needs an individual check.
  • Expecting a historical version: a backup restores the captured content; it is not described as a version-selection or rollback tool.

How we picked the right method

The choice follows the documented source of the files, the availability of another PC, and whether the files are meant to be stored for later or moved as an existing installation. Save and configuration handling also matters: Steam specifically excludes those items from local network game transfers, and cloud save coverage varies by game. No universal speed, bandwidth saving, or download-avoidance percentage is established for these options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Steam game backup restore an older version of a game?

Steam’s backup and restore guidance describes restoring backed-up game content, not selecting among historical versions. Do not rely on this workflow as a version-rollback archive unless the game or Steam provides a separate, explicit way to obtain the version you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Steam game backup include Workshop downloads?

The Steam backup guidance cited here does not establish whether Workshop content is included in a particular game backup. Check the game’s and Steam’s current documentation for that content rather than assuming it will be restored with the base installation.

Can I use a backup to move a game to another Steam account?

The backup procedure concerns game files and does not establish that a backup changes account access or transfers ownership. Check Steam’s account and game access rules separately before planning a move between accounts.

Do I need an external SSD to back up Steam games?

No. Steam’s backup command does not require a particular drive or brand. An external SSD, external hard drive, or suitably sized USB drive is optional storage for retaining or transporting the generated files.

Can I restore a Steam backup without an internet connection?

The backup reuses stored game content, but Steam may still need to download updates or missing files. File verification can also reacquire failed data, so do not treat restoration as a universal guarantee of a completely offline installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will local network transfer copy my save files?

No. Valve says local network game transfers send only content that is part of the original game; local save games and configuration files are not sent. Check the game’s save location and Steam Cloud support separately.

Is copying a Steam game folder the same as using Backup and Restore?

No. Steam documents Backup and Restore Games as a distinct workflow and provides separate migration instructions for an existing installation. A direct folder copy should not be presented as equivalent to either documented path.

Should I delete the old installation after creating a backup?

Keep the original until you have tested the backup or restored it successfully, launched the game, and checked its saves. Valve recommends testing backup media to ensure file integrity for future reinstallation.

Does a restored backup include every game’s progress?

Do not assume so. Installed content, local saves, configuration files, and Steam Cloud data are separate concerns, and cloud support varies by game. Verify the individual title’s save behavior and progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Backup and Restore Games when you need reusable files, Steam’s migration procedure when the existing installation is still available, and local network transfer when another PC on the same network can supply the game content. All three can reduce redownloading, but updates or missing files may still require network downloads. Protect and verify saves separately, and test the backup before deleting the original.
