The fastest way to save game storage is to install only the packages you need, remove optional high-resolution textures when their visual gain is not worth the space, and move large PC libraries to another compatible drive. Set each launcher to update at launch or during scheduled off-peak periods, and keep substantial free space because an update may need temporary staging room in addition to the final patch size. On Xbox, the Manage game and add-ons screen lets you select individual packages instead of reinstalling an entire bundle.
Why do game installs consume more space than expected?
A modern game is often a group of separately managed packages rather than one indivisible file. A base game can be accompanied by campaign modules, language audio, downloadable content, multiplayer components and high-resolution texture data. Bundles may download add-ons separately, and a launcher can retain temporary working files while it applies an update.
Install size also varies by platform, language selection, downloadable content, patch level and optional texture content. A small advertised patch therefore does not guarantee that a nearly full drive can install it. Leave meaningful headroom before starting an update, not merely the exact size of the download.
What should I check before installing a game?
Open the game’s install, options or add-on screen before confirming the download. Look for language packs, campaign or story modules, multiplayer components and texture options. Deselect anything you will not use immediately; you can add many optional components later through the same management screen.

How do I control game updates and move games in Steam?
Steam provides per-game update rules, a download manager and alternate Library folders. These controls let you delay updates for infrequently played games and relocate an installed title without downloading it again.
Choose when a Steam game updates
- Open Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Updates.
- Choose one of Steam’s documented options: Always keep this game updated, Only update this game when I launch it, or High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others.
Use launch-time updating for titles you play occasionally. Keep automatic updating for games you need ready immediately, especially when a multiplayer session depends on matching the current server version. Steam’s Download Manager is the place to monitor active downloads and update activity.
Move a Steam game to another drive
- Open Steam’s storage settings and create or select an alternate Steam Library folder on the destination drive.
- In Library, right-click the installed game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Move Install Folder….
- Choose the destination Library and confirm. Steam transfers the existing installation instead of downloading the whole game again.
Moving a game frees space on the original drive but does not reduce the game’s total footprint. A fast, compatible external SSD can make a practical secondary library; confirm the drive’s interface, capacity, operating-system support and compatibility with the computer before moving a large collection.

Epic’s Download Manager includes controls for priority, speed limits, scheduled automatic updates, notifications and whether downloads may continue while you play. Epic also lets you change the default install directory from Settings.
Set Epic download behavior
- Open the Epic Games launcher and open Download Manager.
- Set a download priority for important games, or apply a speed limit so updates do not saturate your connection.
- Use scheduled automatic updates when you want patches to run during off-peak hours.
- Enable or disable installation while playing according to whether background downloading affects your connection or game performance.
- Turn notifications on if you need to know when a large update finishes.
Change where Epic installs games
Open Epic’s Settings and change the default install directory before starting the next installation. For an existing library, use the launcher’s available move or reinstall workflow rather than dragging folders manually; manually moved files may not be recognized as installed.

How can I choose individual game packages on Xbox?
Xbox’s Manage game and add-ons flow lets you select packages on internal storage instead of accepting every item in a bundle. Package names and availability vary by game, but the procedure is consistent with Xbox support guidance.
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight the game, press the controller’s menu button and choose Manage game.
- Open Manage installation on Internal storage.
- Select or clear individual add-ons and packages.
- Choose Save Changes to install or remove the selected items.
A bundle can include add-ons that download separately. If a newly installed add-on does not appear, fully close the game and restart it; Xbox support notes that a restart may be required before the content is recognized.

Can I uninstall high-resolution texture packs?
Usually, yes. Optional texture packages can be removed when you prefer the recovered capacity to the additional visual detail, and they can generally be selected again from the game’s options or Manage game screen when you want them back. The exact menu depends on the title and platform.
Fortnite
In the Epic Games launcher, open Library, select the game’s options, choose Options, and clear features you do not require. Epic’s Fortnite guidance specifically identifies High Resolution Textures as an optional feature that increases file size and can be unchecked to save space.
Modern Warfare
Activision exposes an optional high-resolution texture pack through the game’s Game Installs menu. Activision states that “Texture streaming is designed to save more hard drive space compared to texture packs.” Texture streaming can therefore be preferable when the game and your connection support it, but it may use network bandwidth while assets are delivered.

When should textures stay installed?
- Keep them when you play on a high-resolution display and have ample, fast storage.
- Remove them when the game is on a nearly full drive or the visual improvement is minor at your viewing distance.
- Leave them out of a portable or secondary library when you need the game to fit on a smaller drive.
- Reinstall them before a single-player session where maximum image detail matters, provided the game offers the package separately.
How much free space should I leave for an update?
There is no universal percentage or fixed number. The required working room depends on the game’s patch method, platform and current installation. A launcher may need temporary capacity in addition to the final updated files, so a drive that has room for the download can still report insufficient space.

These are examples, not requirements for every player. Language choices, DLC, platform differences, later patches and optional texture content all change the total. 2K advises managing storage frequently and leaving extra space for future updates.
Which storage-saving method is right for me?
Use the method that addresses your actual bottleneck: remove unneeded content to reclaim capacity, move a complete game to another drive to free the current drive, or change update behavior to control timing and bandwidth.

How do I prevent an update from failing on a nearly full drive?
Free space first, then retry the update. Removing an optional package or moving another game usually creates more reliable headroom than deleting random files from the game’s installation folder.

- Check the launcher’s displayed install or update requirement and compare it with the drive’s free capacity.
- Open the game’s package manager and remove high-resolution textures, unused languages or optional campaigns.
- Move another PC game to an alternate Steam Library or compatible external drive, or uninstall it after confirming your saves are backed up.
- Close other applications that may be using the same drive and pause unrelated downloads.
- Retry the update and keep additional free space available until the launcher completes verification.
If the game launches but an add-on is missing, fully exit and restart the game. If a moved Steam title is not recognized, confirm that the destination Library was added in Steam’s storage settings and use Steam’s own move command rather than a file manager.
How should I maintain a game library over time?
- Monthly: Review installed packages and remove texture, language or campaign content you no longer use.
- Before a major release: Check the publisher’s stated installation or pre-load requirement and clear space in advance.

Will removing a texture pack lower the game’s resolution?
It removes the optional high-resolution texture assets, not the game itself. The title continues to run with its standard texture set when the pack is genuinely optional; the exact visual difference depends on the game, display and viewing distance.
Does moving a Steam game to another drive require a redownload?
Steam’s Move Install Folder… command is designed to relocate the existing installation between configured Library folders without downloading the whole game again. The destination drive still needs enough free space and must remain connected when you launch the game.

Can I remove a language pack without deleting my saves?
