Yes— the Saucony Triumph 23 is worth considering if your priority is a soft, lively neutral trainer for easy mileage, recovery runs, long runs, and everyday walking. It uses a full-length PWRRUN PB midsole, weighs about 263–265 g in several men’s size references, and feels lighter and more responsive than the Triumph 22. The compromises are equally clear: it is not a dedicated race shoe, the standard forefoot can feel snug, and the reduced outsole coverage produces mixed durability reports.

Its best description is a premium, high-stack daily trainer that adds bounce without becoming overly rigid. Choose the wide version if you need forefoot room, and treat current pricing as inventory-dependent because the Triumph 24 has replaced it.

Is the Saucony Triumph 23 worth it?

The Triumph 23 is worth buying for runners who want plush cushioning with enough rebound for normal training paces. Doctors of Running describes it as a premium cushioned daily trainer with a softer, responsive ride, while RoadTrailRun found it energetic and versatile across easy, long and moderate uptempo running. RunRepeat’s laboratory scoring supports that positioning: 92/100 for daily running, 74 for tempo work and 52 for racing.

That profile makes the Triumph 23 a strong choice for recovery days, long runs and marathon base building. It can handle short faster sections, but its tall, unplated platform and roughly 9.2-ounce men’s weight are less suitable for dedicated race-day speed. The shoe is neutral rather than corrective, although its broad platform and mild medial heel flare provide some guidance.

Who should buy it

  • Runners who prefer a soft, bouncy midsole for daily mileage.
  • People logging long or recovery runs who value comfort over maximum speed.
  • Walkers or workers wanting a cushioned all-day shoe.
  • Runners who need a wide size option but still want a neutral design.

Who should choose another shoe

  • Racers seeking a lightweight, plated or highly aggressive marathon shoe.
  • Runners who need firm medial correction rather than neutral guidance.
  • Technical-trail users; the tall stack and soft foam are intended for roads and, at most, smooth groomed trails.

What are the Triumph 23’s specifications?

The following figures combine Saucony’s published specifications with independent measurements. Weight varies with size, width and measuring method, so no single number represents every pair.

Specification Triumph 23 detail Qualification
Category Neutral daily road trainer Wide sizing is available
Midsole Full-length PWRRUN PB, a PEBA-based foam SRS sockliner sits above the foam
Advertised stack 37 mm heel / 27 mm forefoot Saucony and REI specifications
Advertised drop 10 mm Saucony and REI specifications
Independent stack and drop 39.4 mm heel stack / 9.6 mm drop RTINGS laboratory measurement, 2025
Weight 263–265 g (about 9.2–9.34 oz) in several men’s references RoadTrailRun and RTINGS; size and method vary
Additional published weight 283 g for men’s US 9 Saucony Australia listing, 2025
Outsole Strategic XT-900 rubber patches More exposed midsole than Triumph 22
Upper Engineered mesh Designed for a secure, adaptable lockdown

The discrepancy between the 263–265 g figures and Saucony Australia’s 283 g listing is normal for running-shoe specifications: brands and reviewers may use different sizes, widths, scales and conventions. RTINGS measured 264.8 g and a 39.4 mm heel stack, while RoadTrailRun reported 263 g and a 10 mm drop in its reference. Use the published range rather than assuming your pair will match one exact weight.

How does the Triumph 23 ride?

The ride is soft, springy and controlled rather than firm or snappy. PWRRUN PB gives the shoe more rebound than a conventional EVA trainer, while the SRS sockliner adds another layer of underfoot cushioning. The result is a smooth landing for easy running and a noticeable bounce when you increase the pace.

Easy and recovery running

This is where the Triumph 23 is most convincing. The cushioning absorbs repetitive impact without feeling dead, and the broad base keeps the shoe from collapsing when fatigue sets in. Runners who prefer a protective, forgiving feel should find it comfortable for frequent short runs as well as slower days between harder sessions.

Long runs and marathon preparation

The high stack and energetic foam suit long aerobic efforts and marathon base building. You can add moderate uptempo sections, but the shoe’s performance ceiling appears around marathon pace rather than at race intensity. Its unplated construction flexes naturally, which helps during relaxed miles but does not deliver the lever effect of a racing model.

Tempo and faster efforts

RunRepeat’s 74/100 tempo score reflects the compromise. The Triumph 23 can pick up speed for intervals or progression finishes, and its lower weight than the Triumph 22 makes those efforts easier. However, the soft platform and generous cushioning feel less direct than a dedicated tempo or race shoe.

Walking and all-day wear

The same plush foam that helps recovery running also works for walking and extended standing. If you like a soft neutral shoe rather than a firm support model, the Triumph 23 can serve as a versatile training-and-lifestyle pair.

How does the Triumph 23 fit?

Saucony characterizes the shoe as true to size for medium-width feet, and RTINGS recorded a very high true-to-size score. The fit is secure through the heel and midfoot, with a gently tapered forefoot that may feel close around the toes for runners with broad or high-volume feet.

Standard width

Fleet Feet reviewers reported secure lockdown and useful toe splay in the standard width. The engineered mesh holds the foot without requiring excessive lacing pressure, but the taper means that a medium-width foot gets a more precise feel than a roomy one.

Wide width

Choose the wide version if your toes spread naturally, your forefoot is high-volume, or standard shoes routinely cause pressure at the little toe. Wide availability is one of the Triumph 23’s practical advantages, but widths and remaining colors can vary as inventory declines.

How to check the size at home

  1. Try the shoe late in the day, when feet are slightly larger than in the morning.
  2. Wear the socks you use for running and leave roughly a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe.
  3. Walk and jog briefly; your heel should stay planted while your toes can move without touching the upper.
  4. If the length is right but the forefoot feels compressed, exchange for the wide width rather than sizing up, which can create heel movement.

Does the Triumph 23 provide enough stability?

It is a neutral shoe, not a traditional stability model. Nevertheless, the broad platform and a mild medial heel flare give the foot a little guidance as it moves through the stride. RTINGS found the Triumph 23 slightly more stable through that medial flare than the Triumph 22.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This guidance is subtle: it is intended to make a soft, high-stack shoe feel predictable, not to force a runner into a corrected path. Runners who use prescription orthotics or require substantial motion control should confirm compatibility with a clinician or specialty fitter.

What changed from the Triumph 22 to the Triumph 23?

The Triumph 23 keeps the 37/27 mm stack and 10 mm drop but reduces weight, changes the foam feel and removes some midfoot outsole rubber. Those revisions make it more flexible and nimble, although they also create a durability trade-off.

Area Triumph 23 Triumph 22 What the change means
Men’s weight 9.2 oz listed by Fleet Feet; 264.8 g measured by RTINGS 10.1 oz listed by Fleet Feet; 287.5 g measured by RTINGS Approximately 20–38 g lighter, depending on size and method
Stack / drop 37/27 mm, 10 mm advertised 37/27 mm, 10 mm Geometry is essentially unchanged
Foam setup Full-length PWRRUN PB with a softer, bouncy response Earlier PWRRUN PB configuration 23 feels more cushioned and lively in testing
Outsole Strategic XT-900 patches with more exposed foam More midfoot rubber coverage 23 gains flexibility and loses some protective rubber
Stability Broad base and mild medial heel flare Less stable in RTINGS’ comparison 23 offers slightly more guidance
List price context About $170 in U.S. retail coverage Not stated in the available evidence Actual 23 prices now depend on remaining inventory

Fleet Feet’s reviewer Max summarized the change as feeling “lighter, faster and more nimble compared to the 22.” RTINGS measured 264.8 g for the 23 versus 287.5 g for the 22 and found the newer shoe softer, better cushioned and marginally more stable. The update is evolutionary rather than a new category of shoe: both are high-stack neutral trainers, but the 23 is the more efficient daily option.

How durable is the Triumph 23, and how well does it grip?

Durability evidence is mixed because the outsole deliberately uses less rubber. Doctors of Running saw visible wear after 30 miles on one test pair and expected average durability. In contrast, RunRepeat’s laboratory work described the construction as durable and the grip as excellent. These findings are not necessarily contradictory: wear depends on strike pattern, body weight, mileage, surface and climate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outsole trade-off

Exposed midsole foam reduces weight and lets the shoe flex more naturally. The XT-900 rubber patches still cover high-contact areas, but runners who scuff heavily at the heel or train mostly on abrasive pavement may wear through the exposed sections sooner than runners with a smooth stride on clean roads.

Traction

RunRepeat’s grip assessment was positive for ordinary road conditions. The shoe is not designed for mud, loose rock or technical trails; the tall stack can feel less secure on uneven ground, and the soft foam can catch on edges.

How to extend service life

  • Rotate the Triumph 23 with another pair instead of using it for every run.
  • Keep it on roads and well-groomed paths rather than rough trail surfaces.
  • Allow the foam to decompress between runs and avoid storing it in high heat.
  • Replace the shoe when cushioning feels uneven, the outsole is visibly smooth in key zones, or the upper no longer holds the foot securely.

How does it compare with other cushioned daily trainers?

The Triumph 23 sits in the same broad category as the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 27 and New Balance 1080 v14: highly cushioned, neutral daily trainers. The available comparison identifies them as similarly cushioned choices, but it does not establish like-for-like measured weight, stack, durability or current pricing for those models, so a precise numerical ranking would be misleading.

Decision factor Triumph 23 What to look for in an alternative
Ride personality Soft, bouncy and moderately responsive Choose firmer cushioning if you want a more immediate, ground-connected feel
Primary use Easy mileage, recovery, long runs and walking Choose a dedicated tempo or race shoe for frequent fast work
Support Neutral with broad-platform guidance Choose a stability model if you need structured correction
Fit flexibility Standard and wide sizing; standard forefoot tapers gently Check each model’s width chart and try on if your forefoot is high volume
Terrain Roads and smooth, groomed trails Choose a trail-specific outsole for technical terrain

In practical terms, pick the Triumph 23 when its combination of softness, bounce and available width matches your foot. Do not choose it simply because another cushioned trainer has a similar stack number; foam formulation, upper shape and outsole coverage change how those millimeters feel on the road.

What does the Triumph 23 cost, and where can you still find it?

U.S. retail coverage commonly lists an original price of about $170. That is a historical list-price reference, not a guaranteed current price. Because the Triumph 24 has replaced the 23, remaining pairs may be discounted, unavailable in popular sizes, or priced differently by width and color.

Online marketplace listings include men’s and women’s versions under model number 21023-343. Availability and price can change sharply, so search for Saucony Triumph 23 running shoes, verify the model number, select the correct width and inspect the seller’s return policy before ordering. A low price is not useful if the listing is a different generation or a non-returnable size.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm that the listing says Triumph 23, not Triumph 22 or Triumph 24.
  • Check men’s versus women’s sizing and select standard or wide width deliberately.
  • Compare the seller’s stated size, color and return terms; inventory is dynamic.
  • Use the shoe for a short indoor test first so an exchange remains possible.

What are the Triumph 23’s main strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths Weaknesses
Soft but energetic full-length PWRRUN PB cushioning Too heavy and unplated for dedicated racing
Comfortable for recovery and long-distance training Standard forefoot may feel narrow to high-volume feet
Lighter and more responsive than Triumph 22 Reduced outsole coverage creates uncertain long-term wear
Wide sizing and secure heel lockdown Tall stack is less confident on technical trails
Broad platform adds neutral guidance Current stock, color and price vary because the model is discontinued

What is the final verdict on the Saucony Triumph 23?

The Triumph 23 is a well-balanced premium daily trainer for runners who want comfort first but still appreciate bounce and moderate pace versatility. Its meaningful improvements over the Triumph 22 are lower weight, a softer-feeling PWRRUN PB ride and slightly better guidance. The price of those improvements is less rubber under the midfoot and no transformation into a race shoe.

Buy it at a sensible closeout price if the fit works, especially in the wide version when needed. Pass if you require aggressive speed, technical-trail protection or a heavily corrective stability platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Triumph 23 for a marathon?

Yes, it is suitable for marathon training and can cover the distance for runners who prefer a soft, protective ride. For race day, decide based on your pace and preference: the shoe’s cushioning is capable, but its weight and unplated design are less optimized for speed than racing footwear.

Does the Triumph 23 run hot?

The engineered-mesh upper is designed to provide ventilation, but perceived temperature depends on socks, climate and individual foot shape. A looser wide fit can also reduce pressure and improve airflow for high-volume feet.

How many miles should Triumph 23 shoes last?

No universal mileage figure is established. One Doctors of Running test pair showed visible wear after 30 miles, while RunRepeat’s laboratory assessment found durable construction; inspect your own outsole and midsole regularly rather than relying on a fixed mileage promise.

Is the Triumph 23 suitable for beginners?

It can be a beginner-friendly option if you want substantial cushioning and a neutral platform. New runners should increase distance gradually and make sure the forefoot has enough room, since a snug fit can cause discomfort even when the midsole feels comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the Triumph 23 on trails?

Use it only on smooth, groomed trails where the surface is predictable. The high stack, soft midsole and road-oriented outsole are not intended for rocks, roots, steep loose descents or technical mountain terrain.
