For a whole web document that contains a satellite map, use Firefox’s Save full page or Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. Those commands capture the page layout, not an unlimited geographic area. If you need a clean image of a selected map view, frame it in Google Earth Pro and choose File → Save → Save Image. Save the image with its credits and research notes, then share the frozen file for a fixed visual record or a map link when collaborators must reopen and explore the location.
What does a “full-page satellite map screenshot” actually capture?
A full-page screenshot is a raster image of a browser document, including content below the visible viewport. It does not automatically capture the whole planet, every map tile outside the current frame, or a georeferenced image. A map website may render only the area currently visible, and a dynamically loaded map can behave differently from an ordinary scrolling article.
That distinction determines the correct workflow:
- Browser full-page capture: best when your research record is the complete web page, including its title, legend, controls, surrounding text, and the map frame.
- Google Earth Pro image export: best when the desired artifact is a configured satellite or geographic view rather than the surrounding web page.
- Analytical export: required when another person or program must align pixels, measure coordinates, classify land cover, or perform GIS processing. A PNG screenshot is not a substitute for a geospatial data export.
Inspect every saved file before sharing. Look for blank areas, repeated tiles, missing labels, a clipped legend, and intact provider credits.

Which capture method fits your research question?
| Method | What it captures | Static or reopenable? | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox Save full page | The complete scrollable web document | Static image; the page itself is not reopened from the file | Archiving a map page with its text and controls | A dynamic map may not expand beyond its rendered frame |
| Chrome Capture a full size screenshot | Page content outside the current viewport | Static image | Capturing a long document in Chromium | Check for missing or repeated imagery on dynamic maps |
| Google Earth Pro Save Image | The configured geographic view, with optional map elements | Static image | Sharing a clean map figure | Keep Google and data-provider attribution visible |
| Google Maps share link | A location that a collaborator can reopen and explore | Reopenable link | Collaborative investigation and follow-up | A link is not a frozen record of what imagery looked like |
| Earth Engine export | Configured analytical imagery data such as GeoTIFF or TFRecord | Data file for analysis | Pixel alignment and geospatial processing | Requires projection and pixel-grid decisions |
How do I save a full web page in Firefox?
Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool provides the documented Save full page option. Mozilla’s help page was updated September 28, 2026; use its current interface if labels change.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the map page and wait until the map, labels, legend, and surrounding text you need are visible.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Mozilla also documents a keyboard shortcut on its help page: Firefox screenshot instructions.
- Choose Save full page for the entire scrollable document. Choose Save visible if only the current viewport is relevant.
- Select Download to save an image file, or Copy to place the capture on the clipboard.
- Open the downloaded image in an image viewer. Confirm that the map did not turn blank between scroll positions, that lazy-loaded imagery appears, and that credits and legends are readable.
Use a descriptive filename such as place-map-view-2026-11-02-firefox-full-page.png. The date in a filename records when you captured the image; it does not prove when the underlying satellite imagery was acquired.
How do I capture a full-size page in Chrome?
Chrome exposes a full-document command through DevTools. It captures page content outside the viewport, but a map’s renderer may still be limited to its current frame.
- Open the page containing the satellite map.
- Open DevTools, then enable the device toolbar.
- Open the device-toolbar More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome documents this workflow in Device Mode and screenshot guidance.
- Open the resulting file and inspect every map section. If tiles are repeated, missing, or replaced by a gray or blank area, capture the map view separately instead of claiming that the full page contains a complete geographic extent.
For a long research page, this method preserves headings, captions, and the map in one image. For a map that uses continuous panning or canvas rendering, a viewport capture or a dedicated map export can be more reliable than a page-length image.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I export a selected satellite view from Google Earth Pro?
When the map itself is the research figure, Google Earth Pro’s image export is the clearest documented route. It saves the configured view rather than a browser page around it.
- Open Google Earth Pro and navigate to the place or coordinates you need.
- Set the orientation, zoom, imagery layer, borders, labels, and icons. Frame the geographic extent deliberately; the saved image reflects this view.
- Choose File → Save → Save Image, or use the Save Image toolbar button.
- In Map Options, decide which displayed borders, labels, icons, legend, and other information should remain. Google’s instructions also allow resolution and text sizing to be configured: Google Earth image-saving instructions.
- Save the image, then verify that the attribution strip and relevant data-provider credits remain legible.
Do not crop away the bottom credit area to make a cleaner figure. If you annotate the image, place annotations so they clarify the research without obscuring required credits or materially altering the imagery.

How should I share a screenshot versus a map link?
Use a static image when the recipient needs to review or cite exactly what you saw. Use a map link when the recipient needs to reopen the location, change layers, or inspect another scale. These are complementary artifacts, not interchangeable ones.
- For Google Maps on a computer, open the location and choose Menu → Share or embed map → Send a link → Copy link. The documented sequence is in Google Maps sharing help.
- Attach the frozen screenshot alongside the link when the visual state matters. The image preserves your framing even if the map later changes.
- In the accompanying note, identify the place or coordinates, imagery provider, displayed imagery date if available, capture date, visible scale or map settings, and the filename.
- Tell recipients whether the file is a browser-page capture, an Earth Pro map export, or an analytical data product. That prevents a screenshot from being mistaken for geospatial source data.
How do I preserve research context around the image?
A screenshot can lose context when it is detached from the page or map application. Keep a small text record with each figure:
Recommended Free Tools
- Place name and coordinates, using the coordinate reference shown by the application.
- Imagery provider and any displayed imagery date. Do not infer an acquisition date from the date you saved the screenshot.
- Capture date, software and browser used, zoom or scale, orientation, visible layers, and whether labels or borders were enabled.
- Original filename and a short description of what the frame is intended to show.
- A link to the map location when collaborators need to explore it interactively.
Open the exported file at its final display size. A tiny legend, unreadable credit, or clipped north arrow can make an otherwise sharp image unsuitable for citation.
What attribution and usage rules apply to Google-derived imagery?
Google’s Geo Guidelines require Google and relevant data-provider credits to remain visible and associated with the content. Do not crop, obscure, or detach the attribution strip. The exact permissions depend on how and where you publish the image; research use is not a blanket commercial-use license.
Google states: “Google Earth content may not be used for any commercial or promotional purposes.” Read that sentence with the specific examples and exceptions on the current Google Geo Guidelines. Check the intended publication—especially a promotional or commercial page—against the applicable rules before posting.

Keep the credit adjacent to the image wherever it appears, and preserve it when exporting, resizing, or placing the figure in a report. If you add arrows or labels, do not imply that your annotations are part of the provider’s imagery.
When is a screenshot the wrong deliverable?
If the next step requires spatially aligned pixels, repeatable measurements, classification, or GIS analysis, export imagery data through an appropriate geospatial workflow instead of relying on a browser PNG. Google Earth Engine documents GeoTIFF and TFRecord exports and explains why projection and pixel-grid configuration affect alignment: Earth Engine image-export guidance.
A screenshot records appearance. It generally does not carry a coordinate reference system, a reliable pixel size, sensor metadata, or a machine-readable map projection. You can include a screenshot as a figure that explains the study area, but keep the analytical export as the source used for calculations.

The image is blank or partly gray
The page may still be loading, a map tile request may have failed, or a bot check may have replaced the content. Wait for the map to settle, retry once, and inspect the result. If a browser full-page capture remains incomplete, use the viewport or Google Earth Pro workflow and record the limitation.

Tiles repeat or disappear below the first screen
This is common with dynamically rendered maps and does not prove that the geographic area was captured. Use a deliberate map-frame export, or capture smaller viewport images that you can verify individually. Do not stitch them into a seamless map unless the alignment is known.
The legend, labels, or credits are clipped
Resize the window or map frame before exporting, then check the saved file at its final size. In Earth Pro, adjust resolution and text sizing in Map Options; in a browser, use a viewport that leaves room for the legend.
The map link opens a different view later
A link is designed for exploration, not as an immutable record. Keep the static image, capture date, settings, and displayed imagery date with it so readers can distinguish later map changes from your original observation.

My team needs measurements from the pixels
Stop at the screenshot stage and obtain a geospatial export with a defined projection and pixel grid. Use the screenshot only as a visual reference for the area and layer selection.
Is there a useful reference for interpreting satellite imagery?
If you need a textbook on image interpretation after capturing the figure, Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation, 7th edition (Thomas Lillesand, Ralph W. Kiefer, and Jonathan Chipman; ISBN 9781118343289), is an optional print reference listed by Google Books: book details. It can help explain what a captured image may show, but it is not a capture tool, a source-data substitute, or a requirement for following these workflows.
Final pre-share checklist
- Confirm whether you captured a whole web document, a configured map view, or analytical data.
- Open the saved file and inspect every map section for missing, repeated, or blank imagery.
- Keep Google and relevant provider credits visible and readable.
- Record place or coordinates, provider, displayed imagery date if available, capture date, settings, and filename.
- Send the static image for a fixed visual record and the map link for an interactive follow-up.
- Use a geospatial export, not a screenshot, for aligned pixels or analysis.
- Check the intended publication against current usage rules, especially for commercial or promotional use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a full-page screenshot show an entire country or ocean?
No. The command describes the length of the web document, not an unlimited geographic extent. A map may render only the area inside its current frame, so a country-scale figure should be deliberately framed and exported as a map view.
Does a screenshot preserve the date of the satellite imagery?
Usually not by itself. Record any imagery date displayed by the map provider, but treat the file’s capture date only as the date you saved the view; never infer an acquisition date from it.
Should I send a PNG or a link to a collaborator?
Send the PNG when the collaborator must cite or review the exact visual state you captured. Send the map link when they need to reopen the location and explore layers or scale, and provide both when the project needs a frozen record plus interactive context.
