Its steel deck, 460 mm (18.1-inch) cut, ten height settings, 60 L catcher and supplied mulching plug make it versatile for medium-to-large domestic lawns. Is the Sanli Power Mulch PMS400 any good?
It can be a good used mower, provided its engine, cutting system and catcher are in sound condition and you have a realistic parts plan. The 460 mm deck covers ground faster than a narrow push mower, while the 15 mm minimum setting allows a short formal cut and the 75 mm maximum setting is useful when grass is long or conditions are dry. Ten positions provide more adjustment than a simple three-setting mower, but the mechanism still needs to move freely and remain securely locked on every wheel.
How do the PMS400’s mulching and catching functions work?
The mower is designed as a dual-function machine. Fit the supplied rear catcher for conventional cut-and-catch mowing; install the supplied mulching plug when you want clippings returned to the lawn. Changeover is useful, but the plug, catcher and discharge area must be fitted correctly before starting the engine.
Cut-and-catch mowing
With the catcher attached, clippings are collected behind the mower. The 60 L capacity means fewer emptying stops than a small-bag mower, although wet or very long grass fills any catcher quickly. Stop the engine before removing or refitting the catcher, and check that its frame and fabric or plastic sections are not torn or distorted.

The mulching plug closes the rear discharge path so the blade can recut clippings and return them to the turf. Mulching works best when the lawn is dry and you remove only a moderate amount of growth at a time. Raising the cutting height for an overgrown lawn and making a second pass is safer than forcing the mower through a heavy load in one cut.
What to inspect in either mode
- Confirm the plug or catcher is fully seated and cannot work loose.
- Look for packed grass under the deck; isolate the spark-plug lead before clearing it.
- Do not use a damaged catcher, loose attachment or bent cutting component.
What size lawn can the PMS400 handle?
Sanli’s manual specifies the mower’s dimensions and capacities but does not provide an official lawn-area limit. The 460 mm width, 60 L catcher and 1.0 L tank make it appropriate for many medium-to-large residential lawns, but the practical area per tank or catcher cannot be stated reliably without knowing grass length, moisture, slope, speed and overlap.

Available evidence is anecdotal, but it shows why condition and maintenance should dominate a used purchase. Owners have described easy starting, adequate power, low fuel consumption and good value. One report says a mower remained in service for 18 years, with wheel replacement eventually required; another describes six years of reliable starting.
The same review set records difficult or intermittent starting, unexpected noise, catcher assembly or fit issues, fragile plastic parts and the need to replace an air filter. A few owners report engine, blade-adaptor or starter failures. These accounts do not establish a failure rate, and they may reflect neglected servicing, stale fuel, impact damage or normal wear rather than a universal design defect.
Noise and handling
The listed noise level is 75 dB. Some owners considered the mower louder than expected, so use hearing protection and follow local rules for mowing hours. A steel chassis generally tolerates knocks better than a thin plastic deck, but it also adds weight; check that all four wheels roll smoothly and that height adjusters hold their selected positions.
Power expectations
The 2.75 kW maximum-power figure and 135 cm³ engine are adequate for ordinary domestic cutting when the blade is sharp and the height is appropriate. Oil, spark plug and air-filter questions
The manual states a 0.6 L oil capacity, but capacity is not the same as the correct oil grade. Verify the grade and filling procedure in the engine section of the manual or with an authorised Sanli dealer for the engine’s operating temperature. Do not overfill.
The PMS400 uses a replaceable spark plug and air filter, but the supplied material does not establish a universal aftermarket part number. Remove the old component and match the engine identification and dimensions, or have a dealer confirm fit. Check the plug lead is firmly connected after service.
Blade care
Inspect the blade, adaptor, fastener and drive shaft for looseness, cracks, bends and grass packed around the hub. Disconnect the spark-plug lead before inspection. The manual specifically says never to straighten a bent blade; replace it and any damaged attachment hardware instead.

How do you troubleshoot a PMS400 that will not start?
Work through the manual’s likely causes in a safe order. Keep hands and feet clear of the blade, and never investigate beneath the deck with the plug lead connected.
- Check control position. Confirm the throttle or engine-control lever is in the starting position specified by the manual.
- Check fuel. Low, stale or contaminated fuel can prevent starting. Drain questionable fuel and refill with fresh fuel suitable for the engine.
- Inspect the spark plug. A depleted, dirty or incorrectly connected plug can stop ignition. Check the plug condition and lead, cleaning or replacing the plug as required.
- Consider flooding. Repeated priming or starting attempts can flood the engine. Follow the manual’s procedure for clearing a flooded engine rather than continuing to pull the starter indefinitely.
- Check fuel delivery and venting. A blocked fuel supply or a fuel-cap vent problem can interrupt flow. If the engine runs briefly and stops, these checks are especially relevant.
- Escalate persistent faults. If fuel, ignition and control checks do not resolve the problem, stop testing and use an authorised Sanli dealer or qualified small-engine technician.
If it starts but loses power
The manual points first to a dirty air filter or an incorrect cutting-height setting. Clean or replace the filter as appropriate, raise the deck for heavy growth and avoid removing too much grass in one pass.
If it vibrates excessively
Stop immediately and inspect for a loose, bent, broken or dirty cutting component. Vibration can also follow damage to the blade adaptor or drive shaft. Do not continue mowing until the cause is corrected and the blade assembly is secure.

Can you still get PMS400 parts and service?
Availability is the central ownership risk. The model is marked discontinued, and current stock or pricing for blades, air filters, spark plugs and other parts has not been established. Before buying, ask the seller or an authorised Sanli dealer to confirm the exact parts pathway for the engine and deck.

- A correctly fitting replacement blade and blade-adaptor hardware.
- The engine’s air-filter element and spark-plug specification.
- A usable catcher, mulching plug and catcher attachment hardware.
- Wheel, height-adjuster and starter components if the mower shows wear.
- Dealer willingness to service the SL1P64F-A engine and obtain non-consumable parts.
Take clear photographs of the engine label, blade, adaptor and catcher when contacting a dealer. A generic part that looks similar may not be safe or compatible, so confirm fit before ordering.
What warranty did the PMS400 have?
The PMS400 instruction manual states: “Sanli provides an express warranty for this product for 2 years from the original purchase date, except for commercial use (90 days).” The warranty applies to the original purchaser who can provide proof of purchase. An authorised Sanli dealer handles repair or replacement of defective parts, subject to the warranty conditions.
Listed exclusions include consumables, misuse, poor-quality or contaminated fuel, incorrect maintenance, water damage and unauthorised modifications. Since the model is discontinued, a current second-hand buyer should not assume that the original warranty transfers or remains active; ask the seller for the dated receipt and check directly with Sanli or a dealer.

Is a discontinued PMS400 worth buying?
Buy one when the price reflects its age, the machine passes a cold-start and vibration test, and consumables and service are confirmed.
