Verdict: The 40-inch Samsung ViewFinity S8 S85TH is a specialist productivity monitor that can genuinely replace two conventional displays. Its 5120×2160 canvas gives you 4K-class vertical space plus enough width for several full-size applications, while Thunderbolt 5, KVM, picture-by-picture and a built-in USB hub simplify a laptop-heavy desk. The trade-offs are substantial: a large and deep footprint, ordinary 350-nit HDR performance, VA response behavior that is not ideal for esports, and a $1,399.99 US launch price. It is compelling when one continuous desktop matters more than peak HDR or minimum gaming latency.
What is the Samsung ViewFinity S8 40-inch?
The ViewFinity S8 S85TH is Samsung’s 40-inch professional ultrawide, sold in the United States under model numbers S40H850TAN and LS40H850TANXZA. It uses a 5120×2160 (5K2K or WUHD) resolution, a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 1000R curved VA panel. The combination is unusual: most ultrawides prioritize horizontal pixels but reduce vertical workspace, whereas this monitor keeps the 2160-pixel height associated with a 4K display.
Samsung rates the panel at 350 cd/m² typical brightness, a 3,000:1 static contrast ratio, 99% sRGB coverage, 4 ms gray-to-gray response time and up to 144Hz refresh. HDR10 and HDR10+ are supported, and AMD FreeSync Premium is included for variable-refresh gaming. The monitor also acts as a Thunderbolt 5 dock, with networking, USB expansion, KVM switching and picture-by-picture modes built in.
That feature mix explains the product’s purpose. This is not simply a very large office screen or an enthusiast gaming panel. It is designed to consolidate a multi-monitor workstation, particularly when one or more computers must share the same display and peripherals.

Can the Samsung ViewFinity S8 replace two monitors?
Yes, for the right workflow. The 5120-pixel width lets you keep a browser, writing application, Slack or another chat client, email and reference material visible at the same time. The 2160-pixel height means documents and web pages retain the vertical room of a 4K monitor instead of becoming short, letterbox-shaped windows.
The independent hands-on assessment found the screen effectively replaced a two-monitor arrangement in daily work. The decisive benefit was continuity: there is no bezel in the center of the workspace, so a spreadsheet, timeline or wide document can span the full panel without a physical divider.

Why the single canvas feels different
Two monitors give you fixed physical boundaries and often require a separate stand or arm for each panel. The S8 presents one uninterrupted desktop. You can place a main document in the center and keep supporting windows at either side, or divide the width into two large applications with room left for a narrow reference column.
Window-management software is still useful. Operating-system snapping, virtual desktops and application-specific layouts let you recall consistent arrangements, but the monitor itself does not force a particular split. You can use the whole 5120×2160 area for one wide timeline or design canvas when that is more useful than tiled windows.
Who benefits most
- Software developers who keep an editor, documentation, terminal and browser open together.
- Writers and researchers who need a draft, source material and communication tools visible at once.
- Video, audio and design users who benefit from a long timeline without sacrificing vertical controls.
- Finance and operations users working with wide spreadsheets and several dashboards.
- People who switch between a work laptop and a personal desktop and want one keyboard, mouse and display.
If your work consists mainly of one maximized email window, the extra width is unlikely to justify the price or desk space. The value comes from simultaneously visible information, not from making a single application larger.
Is 5K2K sharp enough for work?
Yes. At 5120×2160, the S8 supplies the same 2160-pixel vertical resolution as a 4K display while adding 1280 pixels of horizontal room. Text and interface elements remain crisp at normal desktop scaling, and you can fit more columns or longer lines before zooming.

Actual sharpness depends on viewing distance, operating-system scaling and application support. Sitting too close to a 40-inch curved panel can make the edges dominate your peripheral vision; sitting too far away wastes the pixel density. A deep desk that places your eyes roughly an arm’s length or more from the panel is easier to manage than a shallow desk.
What 5K2K does not mean
The 5120×2160 figure is not equivalent to a 5120×2880 5K monitor. It is a 21:9 format with fewer vertical pixels than 5K 16:9. For office work, the 2160-pixel height is effectively 4K-class and is the reason this panel can replace a pair of 2560×1440 displays without making documents feel cramped.
How good is the image quality?
The VA panel is well suited to text, spreadsheets, browsing and general creative applications. Its specified 3,000:1 contrast ratio gives dark interfaces and video more depth than a typical IPS office monitor, and 99% sRGB coverage is appropriate for web-oriented color work and everyday media.
Brightness and HDR limitations
350 cd/m² is adequate for a normally lit office but modest beside high-brightness OLED and mini-LED monitors. HDR10 and HDR10+ compatibility means the monitor can accept HDR signals; it does not make the panel a high-impact HDR cinema display. The hands-on review observed noticeable automatic dimming during darker video scenes and concluded that HDR movie viewing is not a reason to choose this model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For predictable desktop work, leaving HDR disabled in the operating system may provide a more consistent appearance. If you need bright highlights, deep local contrast and cinematic HDR, a display with substantially higher measured brightness and local dimming is a better direction, even if it offers less workspace.
Viewing comfort and the 1000R curve
The 1000R curve looks dramatic when viewed in a showroom, but it serves a practical purpose at this size. It keeps the far left and right edges closer to the same viewing distance as the center, reducing the need to turn your head across the full width. The reviewer found the curve more comfortable than a flat panel of comparable size after acclimation.
Curvature is subjective. Straight lines in technical drawings, architectural applications or spreadsheets can appear unfamiliar until you adjust. If several people regularly view the monitor from different seats, the strong curve may be less universally comfortable than a flatter display.

What ports and docking features does it have?
The S8 is intended to function as the central connection point for a desk. Samsung lists DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, a USB-C upstream connection, five USB-A downstream ports, a USB-C downstream port and a headphone output. It also supports KVM, picture-by-picture and Thunderbolt daisy-chaining.

What Thunderbolt 5 adds
Thunderbolt 5 can carry display data, USB peripherals, networking and power over one cable to a compatible laptop. Samsung specifies up to 80Gbps data transfer and up to 140W charging. The single-cable arrangement can replace a separate dock, monitor cable, charger and Ethernet adapter for a supported notebook.
Those are maximum capabilities, not a promise that every computer will use them. The laptop must have a Thunderbolt 5-capable port and appropriate power-delivery support, and the cable must be rated for the required bandwidth and charging level. A conventional USB-C port may still connect peripherals or video depending on its specification, but it will not automatically provide the full Thunderbolt 5 feature set.
Using KVM and picture-by-picture
KVM lets two connected computers share the monitor’s keyboard and mouse. You can connect a work notebook through Thunderbolt and a personal desktop through DisplayPort or HDMI, then switch control without moving USB cables. Picture-by-picture displays two sources at the same time, which is useful for comparing documents or monitoring separate systems.
KVM and PBP are workflow features rather than performance enhancements. They require the computers to be connected to the appropriate video and USB paths, and you may need to select the correct input and USB upstream assignment in the monitor’s on-screen menu. Plan those connections before routing cables through a desk.
When daisy-chaining makes sense
Thunderbolt daisy-chaining can extend a compatible setup to another Thunderbolt display or device. It is most useful when the S8 is the first connection from a laptop and you want to keep the desk cable count low. A daisy-chain does not increase the S8’s own resolution or refresh rate, and every additional device shares the host computer’s bandwidth budget.
How much desk space does the 40-inch ViewFinity S8 need?
Plan for a large, deep desk rather than treating this as a normal 32-inch monitor. Samsung lists a stand-mounted footprint of 36.56 × 23.62 × 14.25 inches and a weight of 30.87 pounds. Without the stand, the display is listed at 19.84 pounds. The 14.25-inch depth includes the stand’s base and is the dimension most likely to surprise buyers.

Desk-planning checklist
- Measure usable width, not just the desktop’s advertised width; speakers, a laptop and cable clearance also need room.
- Measure depth from the front edge to the wall or rear obstruction. The stand extends 14.25 inches before accounting for viewing distance.
- Check that the desk can support more than 30 pounds in the stand-mounted configuration without flexing.
- Leave clearance behind the monitor for power, video, Thunderbolt and Ethernet cables.
- Confirm that doors, shelves and monitor arms can accommodate a 40-inch curved panel during installation.
The stand provides height, tilt and swivel adjustment. Samsung also lists a 100×100 mm VESA wall-mount pattern, which can recover desk depth if the wall or arm is rated for the monitor’s weight and size. An arm that works for a 27-inch display should not be assumed to be suitable here.
Is the ViewFinity S8 good for gaming?
It is capable for general PC gaming, not optimized for competitive play. The 144Hz refresh rate makes motion smoother than a 60Hz office display, and AMD FreeSync Premium can reduce tearing when the graphics card’s frame rate fluctuates. The 21:9 curve is immersive in games that support ultrawide resolutions.
What limits gaming performance
- GPU demand: Rendering 5120×2160 at high frame rates requires considerably more graphics power than 2560×1440 or 3440×1440. You may need to reduce quality settings or use resolution scaling.
- Response behavior: The 4 ms GTG rating is a specification, not a guarantee of identical pixel transitions. VA panels can show dark-level smearing, which is more visible in fast competitive scenes.
- Console compatibility: Current consoles generally output 16:9 formats. They can display on the monitor, but unused space remains at the sides or the image is scaled rather than filling the ultrawide canvas.
- HDR: The panel’s ordinary brightness and observed dimming mean HDR is not a standout gaming feature.
For strategy games, role-playing games, simulation and single-player titles, the width and curve are persuasive. For competitive shooters where latency, motion clarity and stable high frame rates matter most, a smaller high-refresh monitor is a more focused choice.
How should you set up the S8 for a laptop workstation?
A careful connection plan avoids most dock and KVM confusion. Use this order:
- Check compatibility. Verify that the laptop has Thunderbolt 5 if you expect one-cable video, peripherals, networking and up to 140W charging. Confirm that the operating system and graphics hardware can drive 5120×2160 at the desired refresh rate.
- Position the stand or mount. Place the screen far enough back that the edges do not require constant head movement. Set height and tilt before plugging in cables.
- Connect the primary computer. Run a certified Thunderbolt cable from the laptop to the monitor’s Thunderbolt/USB-C upstream port. Connect Ethernet and USB peripherals to the monitor rather than the laptop.
- Connect a second computer if needed. Use DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 for video, then connect that computer’s USB upstream path so KVM can switch its keyboard and mouse.
- Configure the display. In the operating system, select 5120×2160 and choose 144Hz when the connection and GPU expose it. If the option is missing, test another cable or input before assuming the panel is defective.
- Assign USB and KVM inputs. In the monitor menu, associate each video input with the corresponding USB upstream connection. Switch sources and verify that the keyboard and mouse follow the selected computer.
- Configure PBP only when needed. Select the two inputs, set the desired split and check scaling on both computers. PBP reduces the width available to each source, so it is a task-specific mode rather than a default setting.
- Test charging and networking. Confirm that the laptop reports power delivery and that Ethernet appears at the expected link speed. A cable or host-port limitation can reduce either feature without affecting the picture.
Keep a conventional charger available during initial setup. The monitor can provide up to 140W to compatible devices, but the actual charge rate depends on the laptop’s own limit and the negotiated USB Power Delivery profile.
What are the main advantages and disadvantages?
Advantages
- 5120×2160 combines 4K-like vertical workspace with enough width to replace two monitors.
- A bezel-free continuous canvas is useful for wide documents, timelines and side-by-side applications.
- Thunderbolt 5 can provide display, data, networking and up to 140W charging through one cable to compatible laptops.
- KVM, PBP, Ethernet and a large USB hub support mixed-computer desks.
- 144Hz and FreeSync Premium make it suitable for ordinary PC gaming as well as work.
- The curved 1000R panel keeps the edges within a more natural viewing arc at 40 inches.
- Height, tilt and swivel adjustment are included, with 100×100 mm wall-mount support.
Disadvantages
- The $1,399.99 launch MSRP is difficult to justify if you do not use the extra workspace or docking features.
- The monitor is wide, deep and heavy; small desks may not accommodate it comfortably.
- 350-nit brightness and observed automatic dimming make HDR an average rather than premium experience.
- VA pixel transitions and a 4 ms rating are less suitable for esports than specialized fast-gaming displays.
- Driving 5120×2160 at 144Hz places a heavy load on the graphics card.
- Consoles typically cannot use the full 21:9 canvas.
- Thunderbolt 5 benefits require compatible host hardware and correctly rated cables.
Is the Samsung ViewFinity S8 worth $1,399.99?
It is worth considering when it replaces two displays, a separate dock and much of the cabling on a professional desk. The value is strongest for someone who routinely works across several applications, changes between two computers or needs a single uninterrupted 5K2K canvas.

Use this decision test
| Your priority | Fit with the ViewFinity S8 |
|---|---|
| One continuous desktop replacing two screens | Excellent fit; the 5120×2160 canvas is the central benefit. |
| One-cable Thunderbolt laptop desk | Strong fit if the laptop supports Thunderbolt 5 and the required power profile. |
| Two computers sharing keyboard and mouse | Strong fit because of KVM, PBP and multiple inputs. |
| Color-critical HDR video work | Weak fit; brightness and dimming behavior are ordinary for the price. |
| Competitive high-frame-rate gaming | Mixed fit; 144Hz is useful, but resolution demand and VA response are limiting. |
| Small or shallow desk | Poor fit unless a suitable wall mount or arm can recover depth. |
What should you check before buying?
- Graphics output: Confirm that your computer can drive 5120×2160 at 144Hz through the chosen input. Older laptops may offer the resolution but not the refresh rate.
- Thunderbolt version: Do not assume every USB-C port is Thunderbolt 5. Check the computer’s technical specifications and use a certified cable.
- Power needs: Compare the laptop’s charging requirement with the monitor’s negotiated output. A high-performance notebook may still need its own adapter.
- Desk measurements: Reserve the full 36.56-inch width and 14.25-inch stand depth, plus space for speakers and a comfortable viewing distance.
- Software layout: Make sure your operating system and window-management tools can create the arrangements you expect on a 21:9 desktop.
- Gaming expectations: Decide whether you value immersion and workspace more than maximum frame rate, fastest transitions and strong HDR.
- Return policy: A 1000R curve and 40-inch size are personal fit decisions that specifications cannot settle. Buy from a seller with a practical return window.
Who should buy the Samsung ViewFinity S8?
Buy it if your work benefits from a single 5K2K surface, you have a desk large enough for it, and you can use its connectivity features. It is particularly convincing for professionals who alternate between a work laptop and another computer, because KVM, PBP, Ethernet and the USB hub reduce the friction of changing systems.
Skip it if your priority is inexpensive office work, spectacular HDR, console gaming or the lowest possible competitive-gaming latency. Those goals point toward different monitor designs, and paying for unused Thunderbolt and workspace is poor value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ViewFinity S8 include a built-in webcam or speakers?
The listed feature set covers display inputs, USB ports, Ethernet, a headphone output, KVM, PBP and Thunderbolt functions; it does not identify an integrated webcam or speakers. Plan to use separate audio and camera hardware unless the exact regional specification says otherwise.
Can a MacBook run the monitor at 5120×2160 and 144Hz?
That depends on the MacBook model, its Thunderbolt implementation and the operating system’s supported timings. Check the computer’s external-display specification and test the supplied input and cable combination; the monitor’s 144Hz capability alone does not guarantee that every host can deliver it.
Will ordinary USB-C cables provide the full 140W charging and 80Gbps speed?
No. Those are Thunderbolt 5 maximums that require a compatible host, monitor port and suitably rated cable. A lower-spec USB-C or Thunderbolt cable may still carry a display signal or peripherals while negotiating lower bandwidth or charging power.
Is the 1000R curve suitable for photo or engineering work?
It can be comfortable for long sessions, but the curvature may make straight lines feel unfamiliar at first. If geometric accuracy from edge to edge is more important than an immersive viewing arc, compare the S8 with a flatter professional display before committing.
