One of the oldest TV brands you’ll find in the market nowadays is Samsung. Their longevity in the TV market is a result of the quality televisions they have been delivering.

Moreover, they not only deliver quality televisions, but most of their TVs are also well-priced. One of the Samsung televisions that is of good quality and has a fair price is the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA.

This television was released in 2018 and offers decent picture quality and a brilliant operating system. Also, the TV had a price tag of $597.96 when I wrote this review article in March 2022.

However, as with other televisions in the market, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA comes with some flaws. Hence, to discover more about this TV and its flaws, I urge you to continue reading.

Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA: Design, Dimension, and Weight

One interesting fact about Samsung TVs is their attractive design. Thus, one would expect the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA to have a sleek design.

Thankfully, this television doesn’t disappoint as it features a good-looking design with thin bezels. These bezels that surround the television’s display screen are made of plastic with a matte-black finish.

Moreover, the bottom bezel is a bit wider than the others because it houses a “SAMSUNG” logo at the center. This logo serves as a means of brand identification and also adds to the television’s beauty.

Moving to the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s back, you’ll find a plastic panel. Furthermore, this plastic back panel features a black textured finish and tiny stripes that make it look appealing.

Also, on the back panel, you will find a set of lines and grooves at the bottom part that serve as a cable management system. Hence, with the help of the cable management system, cables connected to the television should look organized at all times.

Besides, there are four holes on the back panel of the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA. These holes are to accommodate a 200 X 200 VESA mount for mounting the TV on the wall.

Moreover, the back panel of the television is fairly thin. Thus, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA shouldn’t stick out of the wall when wall-mounted.

However, just in case you don’t enjoy staring at TVs from the wall, this Samsung TV comes with a pair of legs. To give more details, these legs are made of plastic with a matte-black finish.

Nevertheless, each of these legs is positioned close to the edges of this 50-inch TV. Therefore, one would need a fairly large table to place the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA on if it isn’t wall-mounted.

To add to the woes, the television’s legs are very short. Hence, there won’t be much space beneath Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA for users to place a soundbar or external speakers.

On a bright note, these plastic legs are sturdy enough to offer Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA enough support to stand firmly. Thus, you won’t need to worry about the TV wobbling or being knocked down by kids.

That said, let us now discuss the dimension and weight of this Samsung TV. The Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA measures 1125.2 x 60.9 x 650.2 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 13600 g.

However, when compared with most of its 50-inch competitors, this television weighs more. For example, the VIZIO V505-G9 weighs 9670.5 g while the TCL 50S425 weighs 10477.9 g.

In summary, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA comes with a good design, featuring thin bezels and a slim back panel. Also, this TV comes with a cable management system that makes cables look organized at all times.

However, the TV is heavier than most of its rivals. Therefore, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA deserves an eight out of ten rating in this design review section.

Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA: Display Features and Picture Quality

The Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA features a 50-inch LED display. Moreover, this television’s display offers a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution.

Having a 4K resolution implies that the display will be able to produce vivid, sharp, and realistic pictures. In fact, a 4K display is four times better, clearer, and sharper than a standard HD display.

In addition to its 4K UHD resolution, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display comes with an excellent contrast ratio. Precisely, the display has a high contrast ratio of 6107:1.

Moreover, the excellent contrast ratio of the display is due to the fact that it is made with a VA panel. Briefly, contrast ratio refers to the difference between the whitest whites and the darkest black a display can produce.

Furthermore, the contrast ratio is a significant factor that determines the black level of a display. Hence, with a high contrast ratio of 6107:1, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display should be able to render deep blacks.

Therefore, movies or TV series with plenty of dark scenes, such as Vampire Diaries, will be ideal to watch on this TV. That’s not all; the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA will also be suitable for dark room viewing due to its high contrast ratio.

Unfortunately, the television’s display fails to support local dimming. Local dimming is a technology that boosts the contrast ratio and black level of LED/LCD displays via dimming backlight zones.

Therefore, with local dimming, blacks on the display will be darker than they would be without local dimming. In doing so, improving the overall picture quality and dark room performance of the television.

Sadly, as said earlier, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display doesn’t support local dimming. Sincerely, the lack of local dimming isn’t a major issue for this television’s display because it has a high contrast ratio.

However, it would have been a nice addition to the display features of the television. To make up for its lack of local dimming, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display supports HDR (High Dynamic Range).

Specifically, the display supports various HDR formats such as HDR10+, HDR 10, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma). Briefly, HDR refers to a picture technique that boosts the brightness and range of colors of a display when viewing HDR-supported content.

Basically, when the display is rendering such content, the picture quality will be very realistic and lifelike. For the record, most HDR-supported content is found in streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video.

Sadly, in spite of supporting various HDR formats, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display isn’t bright enough. To be more specific, the display offers a mediocre peak brightness of 270 nits.

As a result, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA isn’t good for watching movies in a well-lit or bright room. Nevertheless, a peak brightness of 270 nits should be adequate for watching the television in a moderately-lit room.

Aside from its mediocre peak brightness, this television’s display also has poor viewing angles. This was actually expected because VA panel displays are known to offer poor viewing angles.

Hence, when you watch the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA off-center, colors will look washed out, and picture quality will lose accuracy. Therefore, I advise you to watch the TV directly from the center to get the best viewing experience.

On the plus side, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display handles reflection adequately. This is due to the semi-gloss coating on the display’s surface that retracts reflection and sun glares.

That aside, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display comes with an input lag of 22.8 milliseconds. Input lag refers to the duration it will take a display to register signal input from external sources such as a wireless gamepad.

Furthermore, the input lag of the display is one of the major factors that determine the gaming capability of a TV. Basically, if the display’s input lag is 15 milliseconds or less, the television is considered adequate for gaming.

Obviously, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display isn’t low as 15 ms. Hence, the TV isn’t a good choice for gamers.

On the good side, the TV’s display has a fast response time of 16.2 milliseconds. Therefore, you’ll enjoy watching fast-motion content on the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA because there will be minimal blur trails.

For the record, response time refers to the amount of time a display takes to transition from one color to another.

In conclusion, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s display offers decent picture quality and supports HDR. However, the display has bad viewing angles and brightness.

Therefore, I will be rating the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA an eight out of ten in this display review section.

Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA: Sound Features

For the sound department, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA comes with a pair of 2 CH 20-watt speakers. These speakers produce great sound quality but are not loud enough to fill a large room with sound.

To make things worse, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA lacks a subwoofer. As a result, you won’t get an adequate amount of bass to enjoy the thumping and rumbling sounds in movies or music.

Hence, if you are really into bass-heavy movies, I strongly suggest you purchase a soundbar alongside this TV. On a bright note, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA compensates for its lack of a subwoofer by featuring Dolby Digital Plus.

Dolby Digital Plus is a sound technology that amplifies the surround sound production of the TV’s speakers. Thereby allowing them to deliver a cinematic audio quality.

Sadly, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA offers an average distortion performance. This was been proven by the TV’s result on a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) test.

For clarity, the THD test is an evaluation that calculates the amount of distortion that a sound device can produce. Furthermore, according to this test, a sound device produces minimal distortion when it scores 1% or less.

However, a score higher than 1% implies that the sound device is capable of producing a significant amount of distortion. Disappointingly, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA delivered a score of 1.1% on the THD test.

Therefore, at the max volume level, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s speakers will produce a noticeable amount of distortion. However, at a moderate volume level, the distortion might reduce a bit depending on the kind of movie you are watching.

Just in case you are wondering, distortion in this context refers to the change of a sound device’s original audio frequencies. Thereby resulting in the sound device producing unwanted sound and noise.

On a positive note, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s speakers are capable of delivering clear and audible dialogue. For context, dialogue refers to the conversation between multiple characters in a TV show or movie.

Based on the facts above, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA deserves a rating of seven out of ten in this sound review section.

Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA: Ports and Connectivity Features

Port-wise, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA comes with a minimal amount of ports. To make matters even worse, Samsung houses all the ports in the compartment on the television’s back.

Hence, accessing the ports might be difficult whenever the television is mounted on the wall. That said, let us now explore the various type of ports that the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA feature.

To start with, this TV has two HDMI ports which include one that supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). Thus, with the single ARC-HDMI port, users will be able to connect a soundbar to this Samsung television.

Apart from the HDMI ports, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA also comes with a USB port, an Ethernet port, and an RF connector. In addition to that, the TV has optical analog audio out.

That’s all this television has to offer when it comes to ports. Annoying, right?

Moving away from the ports and connectivity, let us consider the included remote control. To begin with, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA comes with a basic TM1240A remote control.

This remote control is entirely made of plastic and has a black matte finish. Furthermore, the remote control is quite lengthy.

As a result, it features enough space to accommodate lots of buttons, including a full number pad. Moreover, the remote has a plus-shaped navigation button that sits close to its bottom part.

A bit above this navigation button, you’ll find the volume and channel rockers. However, regardless of the numerous buttons, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA’s remote lacks dedicated buttons for quick access to certain streaming apps.

Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA: Smart Features

Similar to most Samsung smart TVs, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA runs on the Tizen operating system. This OS offers a user-friendly interface that Samsung calls the SmartHub.

Although this SmartHub interface is easy to navigate, it doesn’t respond to commands swiftly. On a positive note, the Tizen operating system is loaded with numerous pre-installed streaming apps.

A few of these streaming apps include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Hulu, HBO, and Disney+. Moreover, in case you desire more streaming apps, the operating system comes with a built-in app store called the Samsung Store.

Through this Samsung Store, you will be able to download additional streaming apps. Besides, with the help of the SmartThings app, you should be able to stream/share content from your smart devices to the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA.

All you have to do is to download the SmartThings app on your smart device. Also, you need to make sure that the television and smart device are connected to the same WIFI network.

To make things even better, the SmartThings app is available and free for download on the Google Play Store and App Store.

To add to its smart features, the Samsung UN50NU6900FXZA supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control. However, the television, as well as its remote control, lacks an in-built mic.
