Short answer: the Samsung SRF717CDBLS can be a good buy only when you need exceptional storage, can provide a mains-water connection and find a unit in sound condition at a sensible price. Its 719L claimed capacity, convertible Cool Select fourth door, separate cooling systems and plumbed ice-and-water dispenser are unusually capable. However, this is a March 2016 design that Samsung and retailers now list as discontinued, with a 2.5-star energy rating and claimed consumption of 665 kWh per year. Verify the installation space, service support and condition of any remaining or used stock before paying.

What is the Samsung SRF717CDBLS?
The SRF717CDBLS is a four-door French-door refrigerator launched in March 2016. Samsung’s specification sheet gives it a total claimed capacity of 719 litres and associates it with customer/SAP code RF56J9040SG/SA. The layout has two upper refrigerator doors, lower freezer drawers and a separate middle-right Cool Select compartment that can operate as refrigerator, chilled storage, soft-freeze or frozen storage.
It is a counter-depth model with Triple Cooling, Chef Mode, LED lighting, a Crystal Door Bin, full-extension freezer drawers, a digital-inverter compressor and an automatic ice maker. Water and ice are dispensed through a plumbed system rather than a refillable tank, so installation is more involved than with a basic refrigerator.

Is the Samsung SRF717CDBLS worth buying?
It is worth considering for a large household that values maximum usable volume and a configurable compartment more than low running costs or the reassurance of a current model warranty. The refrigerator is a particularly good fit when you regularly switch between fresh-food, chilled, soft-freeze and frozen storage and already have a suitable water line behind the appliance.
It is a poor choice if your kitchen cannot accommodate a 908 mm-wide appliance plus door-swing and side clearances, if you cannot install mains water, or if your priority is a high energy rating. How much storage does the 719L claim represent?
The 719L figure is Samsung’s 2016 claimed total. The specification sheet breaks it into four usable areas, including the ice-maker volume:

Is the fourth door a freezer or a fridge?
It can be either. The fourth door is the 145L Cool Select compartment, not a permanently fixed freezer. Its control lets you choose one of four temperature ranges:

Will the SRF717CDBLS fit my kitchen?
Measure the complete installation area, not just the cabinet opening. The published external dimensions are 1,825 mm high, 908 mm wide and 733 mm deep. The manual separately identifies a 1,797 mm cabinet height, which explains why a niche sized only to the cabinet figure can be too short once the top of the appliance and required ventilation are included.

The 300 mm side figure is particularly important: a refrigerator can physically enter a gap yet still fail to open its doors or drawers properly when neighbouring walls or cabinets block the swing. Measure the route through doors, lifts and hallways, and ask the delivery provider how much manoeuvring space is needed.
The manual calls for level flooring. An uneven floor can prevent the doors from aligning, affect drawer movement and make the appliance harder to stabilise. Do not remove the ventilation allowances simply because the refrigerator is described as counter-depth.
Does it need plumbing?
Yes, for its built-in water dispenser and automatic ice maker. The manual specifies a mains-water connection, and retailer installation information notes that a mini tap is required. Plan the water point before delivery; a temporary jug or an internal refill tank is not the documented setup for this model.
Installation checklist
- Confirm the water point. Have a compatible cold-water connection and mini tap positioned where the appliance can reach them without sharply bending the hose.
- Check the route and clearances. Verify the 908 mm width, 733 mm depth, 1,825 mm overall height, 50 mm top clearance and the manual’s side-space guidance.
- Prepare the floor. Use a level, load-bearing surface capable of supporting the 153 kg listed appliance plus food.
- Position the refrigerator. Leave room to open both upper doors and pull out the full-extension freezer drawers.
- Connect and inspect the line. Have the water connection made according to local plumbing rules, then check every joint for leaks before loading food.
- Allow the appliance to stabilise. Set the desired refrigerator, freezer and Cool Select modes and confirm that water and ice production operate normally.
If you are buying used, ask who will perform the connection and whether the seller accepts responsibility for leaks or damage caused during installation. A refrigerator may cool normally while its dispenser, inlet valve or ice maker has a separate fault.
How do Triple Cooling and Chef Mode work?
Samsung describes the SRF717CDBLS as using Triple Cooling, a system intended to manage the refrigerator, freezer and Cool Select areas separately. Separate cooling paths are designed to reduce unwanted air and odour transfer while allowing each zone to maintain its selected conditions.

Chef Mode is a documented control feature, but the public specification material does not provide a complete list of every automatic sequence or temperature target associated with it. Treat it as a convenience control and consult the appliance’s manual for the exact button sequence on the unit you are buying.
Other documented equipment includes LED interior lighting, a Crystal Door Bin, full-extension freezer drawers, a digital-inverter compressor and an automatic ice maker. These features improve access and day-to-day convenience, but they also add components whose condition should be checked on an older appliance.
How much electricity does it use?
The Samsung specification sheet gives the SRF717CDBLS a 2.5-star energy rating and claimed consumption of 665 kWh per year. That is a label claim from the 2016 specification, not a guarantee of every household’s actual use. Room temperature, door opening, food load, temperature settings, ventilation and appliance condition all affect consumption.

The convertible compartment can also affect consumption: running the Cool Select zone at frozen temperatures generally demands more cooling than using it as a refrigerator, while frequent mode changes add another variable. Keep ventilation clear and clean the appliance as specified in the manual to avoid avoidable load on the compressor.
What warranty and ownership support are documented?
CHOICE lists a two-year warranty for the model. Appliances Online describes a two-year manufacturer warranty plus ten-year parts coverage for the inverter compressor. Those statements are not identical: the longer period is parts coverage for the compressor, not ten years of full labour, call-out or whole-appliance warranty.

Because the model is discontinued, confirm in writing whether any warranty offered with a particular unit is Samsung’s original coverage, a retailer’s used-goods warranty or a separate service contract. Ask specifically about compressor parts, labour, refrigerant work, electronic controls, the ice maker and water system.
What do independent tests say?
CHOICE records the SRF717CDBLS as tested in 2019. Its public listing names categories including freshness, temperature stability and evenness, temperature range, response to outside temperature, default setting, heat-load processing, running cost, noise, reliability and satisfaction.
The actual category scores are available only to CHOICE members, so a public review cannot honestly summarise the model’s laboratory ranking or assign it a comparative noise score. The test date also predates many current refrigerators. Use the listing as evidence that testing occurred, not as a substitute for the hidden results.
Can I still buy a Samsung SRF717CDBLS?
Availability is the biggest uncertainty. CHOICE’s related status listing marks the model discontinued, and Andoo states that it is no longer available. Remaining inventory, private-sale units and refurbished stock can change by location, so treat every listing as a live check rather than assuming Samsung still supplies new units.
CHOICE showed a listed price of $5,449 in 2019. That historical figure is not a current recommended price. - Confirm the exact model code and serial label; do not rely on a seller’s photograph alone.
- Run the refrigerator, freezer and all four Cool Select modes long enough to confirm stable temperatures.
- Test the water dispenser, ice maker, door seals, interior lights, drawers and control panel.
- Look for cabinet damage, rust, moisture around the water connection and unusual compressor noise.
- Ask whether the unit has been transported upright and whether installation, return and repair terms are documented.
- Check local availability of boards, valves, bins, seals and compressor-related parts before committing to an appliance that cannot easily be replaced.

The SRF717CDBLS remains technically attractive when its 719L layout and four-mode Cool Select compartment solve a real storage problem. Buy only after confirming the installation clearances, mains-water connection, acceptable energy budget and a seller-backed path for parts or repairs. With discontinued status, an older 2.5-star design and no public CHOICE scores, the right unit at the right price can make sense, but an unverified or overpriced example is difficult to justify.

No. The published body depth is 733 mm, and doors, handles, ventilation and opening space extend beyond the cabinet line. Measure the complete installation and the delivery route rather than assuming the counter-depth label is sufficient.
