Verdict: The 65-inch Samsung R95H is an exceptional bright-room and gaming television, but it is not a universally superior replacement for OLED. Its matte Glare Free screen, vivid Micro RGB color, very high refresh rate and four HDMI 2.1 inputs are genuinely unusual. However, the $3,199.99 US price, blue-tinted out-of-box image, occasional blooming, missing Dolby Vision and merely adequate built-in sound make the purchase conditional. Calibrate it and add a soundbar if you want the premium experience its price suggests.
This review covers the US model MRN65R95HAFXZA. Samsung also sells the R95H series in 75- and 85-inch sizes. The conclusions below apply specifically to the tested 65-inch version and to the published 2026 specifications.
What is the Samsung R95H, and what makes Micro RGB different?
The R95H is Samsung’s first mass-market television built around a Micro RGB backlight. Instead of using a conventional white backlight filtered through color pixels, the set uses individually controlled red, green and blue light sources behind the LCD panel. Samsung’s retailer specification sheet describes RGB LEDs measuring 100 micrometres or smaller, based on a cited VDE evaluation. The implementation is still an LCD television rather than a self-emissive panel: a backlight illuminates liquid-crystal pixels, while a local-dimming system controls groups of that light.
Samsung lists 3,840 × 2,160 resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate with variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR10+ support, Glare Free treatment and its Micro RGB AI Engine Pro processor. What Hi-Fi? reported approximately 1,400 dimming zones, a substantial number for an LCD, although zone count alone does not determine real-world blooming or shadow detail. Expert Reviews reported a 70W, 4.2.2-channel speaker system.

The practical goal of Micro RGB is greater color volume and more precise control than a typical LED-backlit LCD. In use, reviewers found the R95H’s colors vivid and punchy, with unusually deep, uniform blacks for an LCD. That promise is real, but it does not eliminate the compromises inherent in a backlit display.
How good is the R95H in a bright room?
Bright-room performance is the R95H’s clearest advantage. RTINGS measured outstanding SDR peak brightness and incredible reflection handling. TechRadar likewise found the matte Glare Free screen useful when ambient light, windows or lamps would overwhelm a glossy panel.
The matte surface spreads reflections over a wider area instead of returning a sharp mirror image. That makes daytime television, sports and games easier to see without constantly rearranging furniture or closing blinds. It also preserves perceived contrast better than a glossy screen in a room with uncontrolled light.

Matte coatings can slightly soften very fine highlights compared with a clean, glossy surface, and no coating can make direct sunlight disappear. Position the screen so a window does not shine directly onto it, even though the R95H is more forgiving than most televisions. In a dark, controlled room, the benefit of Glare Free matters less and the remaining differences in black level and shadow control become more important.
Are the blacks and contrast as good as OLED?
No. The R95H produces exceptionally deep LCD blacks, but OLED still has the cleaner pixel-level result. RTINGS described the R95H as having “very deep and uniform blacks with almost no haloing around highlights.” That is an impressive result for a backlit television, particularly with the reported high dimming-zone count.

In difficult scenes, however, the backlight can still illuminate neighboring areas. RTINGS and other testing notes identify some blooming in dark scenes, while TechRadar wrote that the set’s black levels “don’t quite match those of OLED,” even though they remain very rich for a backlit TV. Bright subtitles, stars or interface elements against a black background are the situations most likely to reveal the difference.
OLED controls each pixel independently, so a black pixel can be switched off without affecting a nearby highlight. The R95H instead dims zones containing many pixels. Its algorithms are effective enough that halos are often minor, but they cannot deliver OLED’s absolute separation between light and dark. The R95H’s advantage is that it can sustain much higher brightness without the same full-screen brightness limitations that affect many OLED designs.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does the R95H need calibration?
Yes, if you want a neutral, reference-like picture. RTINGS found poor out-of-box accuracy and a visible blue tint. That means the default image may look striking in a showroom while making skin tones, neutral grays and white subtitles cooler than intended. Calibration is not an optional finishing touch for this model; it is part of getting the performance its hardware can provide.
What to adjust first
- Choose an accurate picture mode. Start with Filmmaker or Movie mode rather than a dynamic showroom preset. TechRadar found that Movie mode can become overly bright in some situations, so check it with familiar content instead of assuming the label guarantees accuracy.
- Disable unnecessary processing. Turn off or reduce contrast enhancement, aggressive noise reduction and motion smoothing when watching films. These controls can change the creator’s intended texture and cadence.
- Set the room-appropriate brightness. Use a higher backlight level for daytime viewing and reduce it at night. Do not use maximum brightness simply because the panel can reach it; excessive output can make shadow detail look lifted.
- Correct the white balance and grayscale. A professional meter-based calibration is the reliable way to remove the reported blue cast. Without measurement equipment, use a trusted test pattern and make small changes rather than copying settings from another panel.
- Check HDR separately. HDR settings are stored independently from SDR on many televisions. Verify HDR10 and HDR10+ with actual HDR content after completing SDR adjustments.
Panel-to-panel variation means another owner’s numerical settings may not produce the same result on your television. If accurate color is important for film, photography or design work, budget for professional calibration or use a meter and calibration software you already understand.
Is the R95H good for gaming?
Yes. Gaming connectivity is one of the R95H’s strongest reasons to buy it. The television has four HDMI 2.1 ports, supports 4K at up to 165Hz, and can run 1080p at up to 240Hz. RTINGS reports support for VRR formats, allowing compatible consoles and PCs to synchronize frame output with the panel and reduce tearing.

Four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs are unusually convenient. A gaming PC, two current-generation consoles and an eARC-connected soundbar can all remain plugged in without repeatedly swapping cables. Confirm that your cables are certified for the bandwidth you intend to use; a source, cable or receiver that cannot carry the signal will limit the result even when the television supports it.

Recommended gaming setup
- Connect the console or PC directly to one of the four HDMI 2.1 inputs.
- Open the television’s external-device or input settings and enable the enhanced signal option for that port if it is not already active.
- Enable VRR in the console or graphics-driver settings, then verify that the television reports the expected refresh rate.
- On a PC, select 3,840 × 2,160 at 165Hz when the graphics hardware and cable can sustain it. For high-frame-rate competitive play, 1,920 × 1,080 at up to 240Hz is the published alternative.
- Use the game picture preset as a starting point, then adjust brightness and shadow detail with an in-game calibration screen.
High refresh does not guarantee high frame rates. A console may output fewer frames, and a PC needs sufficient graphics performance to approach 165 frames per second at 4K. The benefit is headroom: the display can show faster updates when the source supplies them.
Which HDR and audio formats does the R95H support?
The R95H supports HDR10+, as listed by Samsung and confirmed in testing coverage, but it does not support Dolby Vision. RTINGS also reports support for Dolby audio formats but no DTS audio support. This matters if your streaming service, disc player or media server relies on Dolby Vision metadata or DTS soundtracks.
HDR10 content will still play, and HDR10+ can provide dynamic scene-by-scene metadata when both the source and the title support it. Dolby Vision titles generally fall back to another available HDR format rather than becoming unwatchable, but the fallback may not use the same tone mapping intended by the content producer. Buyers with a large Dolby Vision library should compare OLED and premium Mini-LED alternatives before committing.
How good are the built-in speakers?
The built-in audio is serviceable for everyday television but not a match for the screen’s premium ambitions. Expert Reviews reported a 70W, 4.2.2-channel system. TechRadar found the speakers decent overall, yet noted flat bass and a soundstage that remains concentrated near the rear of the screen.

Dialogue, news and casual viewing should be clear enough at moderate levels. Films, games and concert recordings benefit from a soundbar or separate audio system that can provide deeper bass and a wider front image. Connect a soundbar through the television’s eARC connection if you want to pass high-quality audio from built-in apps and external sources; verify format compatibility because the set does not decode DTS.
Plan the audio purchase as part of the total cost. A television priced at $3,199.99 can feel disappointing if its sound requires an immediate upgrade, but adding a soundbar is a sensible way to address the specific weakness reviewers identified.
How much does the 65-inch R95H cost, and what do you get for the money?
Samsung lists the US 65-inch MRN65R95HAFXZA at $3,199.99 in 2026. Launch pricing reported for different markets was approximately £3,299 in the UK, $3,200 in the US and AU$5,299 in Australia. Those launch figures are market-specific and may not represent current retail prices, taxes or temporary discounts.
The price places the R95H in the premium flagship category, where buyers can also consider OLED and high-end Mini-LED/RGB LCD televisions. You are paying for the combination of Micro RGB color, matte reflection control, sustained brightness and unusually comprehensive gaming inputs—not for every possible movie format or the best built-in audio.

Choose the R95H over OLED when your room is bright, reflections are a persistent problem, and you need four high-bandwidth gaming connections. Choose OLED when dark-room movie performance, perfect black and Dolby Vision compatibility matter more than maximum sustained brightness. Consider a premium Mini-LED or RGB LCD when you want to compare specific models on price, blooming and format support rather than buying into a display category on reputation.
What are the R95H’s biggest flaws?
- Calibration is needed: the default image can have a blue cast and inaccurate color.
- Blooming is not eliminated: dark scenes can reveal backlight halos even with extensive dimming control.
- Dolby Vision and DTS are absent: format-focused movie libraries may require a different television or external conversion path.
- Sound is not flagship-level: bass is restrained and the soundstage stays close to the panel.
- The price is demanding: the list price is high enough that an OLED alternative and a soundbar may fit a buyer’s priorities better.
- Expectations can exceed reality: WIRED rated the television 6/10 and reported that demonstration material appeared less bright and more washed out than expected from a new RGB display.
Who should buy the Samsung R95H?
Buy the 65-inch R95H if most of these statements describe your setup:
- Your living room is bright, and reflections routinely interfere with television viewing.
- You want saturated, energetic color and strong HDR impact without using a glossy screen.
- You game on a PC or multiple consoles and will use the four HDMI 2.1 ports.
- You can calibrate the picture or are willing to pay for calibration.
- You have room in the budget for a soundbar if cinematic audio matters.
Look elsewhere if your priorities are reference-accurate color straight out of the box, absolute OLED black, Dolby Vision support or the best possible value per inch. The R95H is a specialist premium LCD: impressive where it is designed to excel, but not a universal winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the matte Glare Free screen handle a room with windows?
It is specifically designed to reduce distracting reflections and is one of the R95H’s strongest advantages in daylight. Place the screen away from direct sun when possible, because a matte coating diffuses glare but cannot remove the effect of light shining directly into the panel.
Is the 65-inch model the only size in the R95H family?
No. RTINGS reports that the series is also sold in 75- and 85-inch versions. Screen-size choice should follow your room layout and viewing distance; the available evidence does not establish identical pricing or performance for every size.
Will a current game console use the television’s full 165Hz rate?
Most consoles output below 165Hz, so the higher ceiling is primarily useful for a compatible gaming PC. The television can still accept lower console frame rates through VRR when the console, game and HDMI configuration support it.
Does the R95H’s Micro RGB backlight remove the risk of OLED burn-in?
The R95H is an LCD with a Micro RGB backlight rather than a self-emissive OLED panel. That means it does not rely on OLED pixels for its image, but long-term behavior should still be judged by Samsung’s warranty and care guidance for this specific model.
