The Galaxy S II is the strongest candidate for Samsung’s best phone ever. Its 2011 combination of a leading Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 MP camera, 1080p video and thin design helped Samsung move from Android contender to serious iPhone rival. The Galaxy S7 generation is the best example of mature execution, while the S24 Ultra is the most complete modern endpoint in this ranking. At the other extreme, the Galaxy Note7 is Samsung’s clear worst phone because a documented battery-safety crisis forced sales to stop, replacement units also failed and production ended.

This is a historical judgment, not a specification-only leaderboard. The ranking weighs influence, reception, innovation, reliability, execution, value and whether a model changed Samsung’s position in the market.

How were the best and worst Samsung phones ranked?

“Best” does not simply mean the newest or fastest. A phone earns a place among Samsung’s all-time standouts when it combines meaningful innovation with strong execution and lasting importance. “Worst” covers more than poor reviews: safety failures, launch-readiness problems, damaging trade-offs and weak long-term value all count.

The framework follows the approach used in major Galaxy retrospectives: balance critical and commercial reception with the phone’s importance, the features and specifications available at release, and informed editorial judgment. Exact positions are therefore debatable, especially for models where the available evidence is historical rather than a modern laboratory comparison.

What are the 8 best Samsung phones of all time?

Samsung’s Galaxy S line began in 2010 and has now covered more than a decade of flagship generations. The eight models or generations below represent the most consequential combination of innovation, refinement and influence.

Rank Phone Why it belongs
1 Galaxy S II (2011) A breakthrough performance, display and design package that helped Samsung challenge the iPhone.
2 Galaxy S7 and S7 edge (2016) A mature flagship generation balancing camera capability, water resistance, expandable storage and reliability.
3 Galaxy S10 and S10+ (2019) A design milestone that expanded the S line into multiple variants and experimented with display cutouts.
4 Galaxy S23 Ultra (2023) A modern performance and camera flagship within Samsung’s established Ultra strategy.
5 Galaxy S24 Ultra (2024) The modern endpoint considered here, combining advanced camera, processor, display and 5G positioning with seven years of updates for the S24 family.
6 Original Galaxy Note (2011) Created a distinctive large-screen, stylus-centered flagship line that became influential in its own right.
7 Galaxy Note8 (2017) A successful recovery after the Note7 crisis, with more than 270,000 units reported sold during its first weekend.
8 Galaxy Z Fold5 (2023) A comparatively mature foldable generation whose significance is clearer after the first Fold’s troubled launch.

1. Why is the Galaxy S II Samsung’s best phone ever?

The Galaxy S II has the strongest historical case because it arrived at the point when Samsung’s hardware ambition translated into mass-market momentum. Its 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, Super AMOLED Plus display, 8 MP camera and full-HD video recording were high-end specifications in 2011. The phone was also notably thin and light for its class.

SlashGear described the S II as a runaway success and a major step in Samsung’s rise against the iPhone. Its reported battery endurance exceeded 18 hours of continuous 2G use under the cited test conditions, an unusually strong figure for that period. More important than any single specification, the S II showed that an Android manufacturer could deliver a polished flagship platform with global influence.

2. Why do the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge rank so highly?

The S7 generation is the best example of Samsung refining rather than reinventing its formula. It paired a strong camera system with water resistance and expandable storage, two practical features that many buyers valued. The S7 edge added a curved-edge display and a larger form factor, while the standard S7 remained easier to handle.

Reliability is central to this placement. In a 2016 statement, Samsung said more than 10 million Galaxy S7 devices were in use in the United States and that it had no confirmed reports of internal battery failures at that time. That statement is a point-in-time safety assessment, not a guarantee about every surviving device today; used phones still need battery and charging checks.

3. What made the Galaxy S10 and S10+ a milestone?

The S10 generation marked a visible change in Samsung’s design language. Samsung’s flagship chronology places it at the point where the S line adopted multiple variants and experimented with display cutouts, allowing a larger screen area without the older full-width notch approach. The S10 and S10+ also established the broad, feature-rich flagship family that later generations expanded.

This is a design-and-platform ranking rather than a claim that every S10 camera or battery result beats newer phones. Its importance comes from how it set up the multi-model, high-screen-to-body direction of subsequent Galaxy S releases.

4. Why is the Galaxy S23 Ultra one of Samsung’s best modern phones?

The S23 Ultra represents Samsung’s mature premium strategy: a top-tier performance platform, a large high-resolution display and an ambitious camera system in a single flagship. It is included as a modern performance and camera candidate within Samsung’s documented S-series sequence.

The placement is intentionally broader than a laboratory verdict. Camera rankings depend on software versions, lighting and test methods, so a claim about a specific zoom or battery advantage should be tied to a model-specific independent test rather than inferred from the phone’s position here.

5. Why does the Galaxy S24 Ultra anchor the modern end of the list?

The S24 Ultra is the most complete current-era model considered in this historical ranking. Samsung positions the S24 series around an advanced processor, camera system, display and 5G connectivity, while the S24 family receives seven years of operating-system and security updates.

That support commitment changes the value calculation. A flagship is no longer judged only by launch hardware; buyers can also ask how long it will receive security fixes and major Android versions. The seven-year promise applies to the S24 series specifically, not automatically to every older Galaxy phone or every future model.

6. Why was the original Galaxy Note so important?

The original Galaxy Note created a parallel flagship line centered on a built-in stylus and a much larger screen than conventional phones of its time. The concept initially looked risky, but it gave Samsung a distinct category rather than another interchangeable Android handset.

Its lasting importance is strategic as much as technical. The Note family became a recognizable product line for handwriting, annotation and precision input, and its design ideas later influenced Samsung’s broader premium portfolio.

7. Why is the Galaxy Note8 considered a recovery success?

The Note8 matters because it restored confidence in the Note name after the Note7 disaster. Android Authority’s historical account reports more than 270,000 Note8 units sold during the first weekend, evidence of a strong rebound rather than a permanently damaged brand.

It is ranked for recovery and execution, not because it introduced the Note concept. The original Note deserves the innovation credit; the Note8 demonstrated that Samsung could return to the category with a commercially credible product after a severe safety crisis.

8. Why is the Galaxy Z Fold5 among the best Samsung phones?

The Z Fold5 is included as a foldable-maturity candidate. Its historical significance comes from how far Samsung’s foldable program had progressed by this generation compared with the first Galaxy Fold’s pre-launch failures.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

“Mature” here is comparative, not a claim that the phone is indestructible or that every hinge and display will age identically. Without a cited durability test, it is more accurate to credit the Z Fold5 with refinement and category leadership than to promise a particular lifespan.

What are the 6 worst Samsung phones?

The worst list mixes one unequivocal safety failure with launch problems, disappointing strategic decisions and two deliberately cautious entries. A phone can be historically important and still be one of Samsung’s worst executions.

Rank Phone Why it ranks poorly
1 Galaxy Note7 (2016) Documented battery-cell failures, a sales stop, failed replacement units, permanent production termination and a 96% return rate.
2 First Galaxy Fold (2019) Serious display and hinge problems appeared before launch, forcing a delay.
3 Galaxy S6 (2015) A major glass redesign produced mixed results and removed features valued by users of earlier models.
4 Galaxy S5 (2014) Not an unsafe or unusable phone, but a design and value disappointment that sold far less than the S4.
5 Galaxy S20 Ultra (2020) A provisional placement pending model-specific evidence on launch autofocus, pricing and software behavior.
6 Galaxy Beam (2012) A provisional niche-product entry whose built-in projector created trade-offs and limited mass-market appeal.

1. Why is the Galaxy Note7 the worst Samsung phone?

The Note7 is the clear bottom-ranked model because its central failure was safety, not taste or benchmark performance. Samsung reported 35 cases by September 1, 2016, after investigating reports of battery problems. In its September 2 statement, Samsung said it had “conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.” The company added that, because customer safety was an absolute priority, it had stopped sales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacement phones did not solve the crisis. Samsung later ended production permanently after replacement-device problems, and Samsung Australia reported that 96% of the 3 million devices sold had been returned. Those figures make the Note7 a documented product-safety failure with a global operational impact, not merely a phone that received disappointing reviews.

2. Was the first Galaxy Fold a failed product?

The first Fold was a launch-readiness failure, not a permanently failed product line. Reviewers encountered serious display and hinge problems before the planned launch, so Samsung delayed release and reworked the device.

That distinction matters. A delayed launch can preserve a product family if the manufacturer addresses the underlying design weaknesses. Samsung continued developing foldables, which is why later models such as the Z Fold5 can be judged as refinement candidates even though the first Fold deserves a place among the worst launches.

3. Why is the Galaxy S6 on the worst list?

The S6 changed Samsung’s formula with a “glass sandwich” redesign. The result looked and felt more premium to some buyers, but the retrospective evidence describes mixed results because the redesign removed features users had valued in earlier Galaxy S models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a trade-off failure rather than a safety crisis. Samsung pursued a more upscale exterior, but the shift did not satisfy everyone who had chosen Galaxy phones for flexibility, serviceability or practical features. The S6 belongs on a disappointment list because the redesign’s costs were as important as its visual upgrade.

4. Was the Galaxy S5 actually a bad phone?

No. The S5 is better described as a disappointment than a disaster. The historical retrospective says it was not a bad device, yet it sold much less than the S4, making it a weak follow-up relative to Samsung’s expectations.

Its placement reflects value and design momentum. A phone can work well for its owner and still underperform as a flagship successor if it fails to create enough reason for existing customers to upgrade.

5. Why is the Galaxy S20 Ultra only a provisional worst entry?

The S20 Ultra is included cautiously because the available evidence points toward questions about launch autofocus, pricing and software, but does not establish a complete, model-specific verdict here. Those issues require independent testing tied to the exact release software and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its fifth-place position should therefore be read as an editorial candidate, not a settled historical fact. A strong review archive could move it up, down or off the list depending on measured autofocus behavior, launch pricing and the speed of software fixes.

6. Why include the Galaxy Beam?

The Galaxy Beam is another provisional entry. Its built-in projector made it distinctive, but projector hardware imposed obvious size, brightness, battery and use-case trade-offs, and the phone remained a niche product rather than a mainstream Galaxy breakthrough.

Because the available historical record is thinner than for the Note7 or first Fold, the Beam’s exact rank is less certain. It is included to represent Samsung’s experiments that were interesting without becoming broadly successful, not to claim that it was dangerous or unusable.

Which Samsung phone changed the company’s position most?

The Galaxy S II changed Samsung’s competitive position most dramatically. The original Note created a new category for Samsung, but the S II proved that Samsung could win at the core flagship business with hardware that reviewers and buyers regarded as a serious iPhone alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The S7 then showed that Samsung could refine that success, while the S24 Ultra demonstrates how the company now treats long software support as part of flagship value. These are different kinds of influence: breakthrough momentum, mature execution and sustained ownership value.

Which old Samsung phone is still worth buying?

For a historical collection or inexpensive secondary device, the Galaxy S7 generation is the most defensible older choice because it combined practical hardware with a strong reputation at release. However, “worth buying” in 2026 depends on condition, carrier compatibility, battery health and whether the phone still receives security updates.

  • Check network compatibility: an older phone may lack the bands or voice-over-LTE support required by your carrier.
  • Inspect the battery: age, heat and swelling matter more than the original endurance figure.
  • Confirm software support: do not use an unsupported handset for banking or other sensitive work simply because the hardware still turns on.
  • Price in repairs: a cheap used phone is not a bargain if its screen, charging port or battery needs immediate replacement.
  • Consider the S24 Ultra for long ownership: Samsung’s stated seven-year operating-system and security-update policy for the S24 family offers a much clearer support horizon.

The S II and original Note are historically important but generally make more sense as collectibles or nostalgia devices than as dependable modern daily drivers. Their influence is lasting; their contemporary software and network experience is not.

What should you look for when judging any Samsung phone?

Use the same six questions for a fair comparison across generations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Did it change Samsung’s trajectory? The S II and original Note score highly because they altered market perception or created a new flagship category.
  2. Was the innovation useful? A stylus, foldable screen or projector matters only when the implementation serves real tasks without overwhelming compromises.
  3. Was the launch ready? The first Fold shows why pre-release reliability and quality control can outweigh impressive specifications.
  4. Were practical features preserved? The S6 illustrates how a premium redesign can alienate users when it removes capabilities they consider essential.
  5. Did buyers receive dependable value? Sales momentum and reception help distinguish a disappointing successor such as the S5 from a genuinely unsafe product such as the Note7.
  6. How long can it remain secure? The S24 family’s seven-year policy makes support longevity a measurable part of the buying decision.

What is the final verdict on Samsung’s phone history?

The Galaxy S II is the best all-time choice because it paired class-leading-for-its-era hardware with a decisive shift in Samsung’s global standing. The S7 generation is the safest pick for mature execution, the original Note is the most influential form-factor experiment, and the S24 Ultra is the strongest modern endpoint considered here.

The Galaxy Note7 is the worst by a wide margin because documented battery failures led to a sales stop, failed replacements, permanent production termination and a 96% return rate. The first Fold and S6 show different failure modes: one launched before it was ready, while the other made a premium redesign that sacrificed features some customers valued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge counted as one phone?

They are treated as one generation because they share the same core flagship platform and release period. The edge version changed screen shape and size, but the historical case for camera capability, water resistance, storage flexibility and reliability applies to the generation as a whole.

Does Samsung’s seven-year update promise cover every Galaxy phone?

No. The documented seven-year operating-system and security-update promise applies to the Galaxy S24 family. Older models have different support histories, so verify the exact security-update status before buying a used device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an old Galaxy phone still be safe for sensitive tasks?

Only if it remains supported and compatible with your carrier. An aging battery, discontinued security patches or a network shutdown can create practical and security problems even when the phone’s screen and processor still work.

Why is the first Galaxy Fold ranked below the Note7 even though both had major problems?

The failures were different in severity. The first Fold had serious display and hinge defects that delayed launch, while the Note7 involved a documented battery-safety crisis, replacement failures and a near-total product recall.

Is the Galaxy S II still Samsung’s best phone for modern use?

It is the strongest historical winner, not the best everyday phone today. Its importance comes from its 2011 impact; modern buyers need to prioritize current network compatibility, security updates, battery condition and app support.
