Short answer: the Samsung Odyssey G80HS S32HG80 is worth considering only if you have a very powerful graphics card and specifically want one monitor that combines 6K desktop sharpness with a 3K, 330Hz competitive-gaming mode. Its 32-inch Fast IPS panel is exceptionally detailed and responsive, but black levels, HDR impact, connectivity and value trail the best OLED and Mini-LED displays. Samsung lists the US model at $1,599.99; independent retailer prices cited by reviewers have been around $1,300–$1,333. At the lower street price it is easier to justify, especially for a buyer who will actually switch between both modes.

What is the Samsung Odyssey G80HS S32HG80?

The Odyssey G80HS S32HG80 is a 32-inch, 16:9 Fast IPS monitor built around an unusual dual-mode panel. Its native desktop and gaming mode runs at 6144×3456 (6K) and up to 165Hz. Switch to the lower 3072×1728 (3K) mode and the maximum refresh rate rises to 330Hz.

That combination targets two different jobs. Six-k resolution gives text, photographs, timelines and fine game detail a much denser appearance than 4K at the same screen size. The 3K mode gives competitive players a higher refresh ceiling that is easier for a high-end graphics card to drive. Samsung also advertises HDR10+ Gaming, while testing cited by Tom’s Hardware found 10-bit operation and more than 90 percent DCI-P3 coverage.

The trade-off is the panel technology. IPS avoids the long-term static-image burn-in concern associated with OLED, but it cannot produce OLED-level blacks. RTINGS found gray blacks, low contrast and weak HDR highlights; WIRED measured approximately 2,000:1 contrast and rated the display 6/10. The result is a monitor that is technically ambitious and very sharp, rather than a universally superior picture-quality choice.

The model number matters. The G80HS S32HG80 is the Fast IPS, 6K/3K dual-mode monitor. It is not the similarly named G80SH S32HG802S, which uses a 4K QD-OLED panel.

How does the 6K/165Hz and 3K/330Hz dual mode work?

The panel has two operating modes rather than a single resolution that dynamically changes its refresh rate. In 6K mode, you get the full 6144×3456 desktop and game image at up to 165Hz. In 3K mode, the active resolution is 3072×1728 and the refresh ceiling doubles to 330Hz.

6K mode: maximum detail

At 32 inches, 6K packs substantially more pixels into the same physical area than 4K. Text edges, small interface controls, high-resolution photographs and distant game geometry look cleaner when the application and graphics card can render at the native resolution. This is the mode that makes the G80HS interesting for programming, creative timelines, spreadsheets with many columns and desktop work that benefits from several crisp windows.

3K mode: maximum refresh

The 3K setting is aimed at esports and other games where motion clarity and frame rate matter more than the finest image detail. A 330Hz ceiling gives the graphics card more opportunity to deliver very high frame rates and reduces the time between displayed frames. It is still a demanding resolution, but it is far less punishing than driving 6K at 165Hz.

What the dual mode does not do

It does not turn the monitor into two independent panels, and it does not make every game run at 330 frames per second. The usable result depends on the game engine, graphics settings, frame-rate limit and GPU. Switching modes also changes the resolution, so desktop scaling and game-specific display settings may need attention after a change.

Can your GPU run the G80HS at 6K and 165Hz?

Only very high-end hardware should be considered for a 6K/165Hz target. Tom’s Hardware says the mode requires DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.1 and discusses performance in the class of Nvidia’s RTX 5090. Even with that level of hardware, modern games may need image-quality compromises or upscaling to approach the panel’s maximum refresh.

Think of 6K/165Hz as a capability to reserve for compatible workloads, not a guaranteed frame rate. Desktop rendering, older competitive titles and well-optimized games are easier cases. A new, visually demanding game with ray tracing can be limited by the GPU long before the monitor reaches 165Hz.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Check the output ports first: your graphics card must expose DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.1 with enough bandwidth for the selected mode.
  • Use a high-bandwidth cable: connect through the appropriate modern port rather than an older DisplayPort or HDMI connection that may restrict resolution or refresh rate.
  • Set the mode in the operating system and game: select 6144×3456 at 165Hz for 6K work, or 3072×1728 at 330Hz for high-refresh play, then confirm the game is using the same output.
  • Watch actual frame rate: a 330Hz panel cannot display 330 unique frames per second when the GPU is producing substantially fewer.

If your system is below the very high-end class described by Tom’s Hardware, the G80HS can still function as a sharp 6K monitor, but paying for its peak refresh makes less sense. The dual-mode design is most valuable when you have a workload that benefits from each mode and the hardware to exploit both.

Is the G80HS good for PC gaming?

Yes, with important qualifications. RTINGS describes it as good for PC gaming because of low input lag, consistent variable-refresh behavior and high-bandwidth ports. Tom’s Hardware also reports very low input lag. The 3K/330Hz mode is the headline feature for competitive play, while 6K/165Hz is better suited to slower, visually detailed games.

Adaptive-Sync and overdrive behavior need care. Tom’s Hardware reports that Adaptive-Sync and overdrive cannot be used together, and RTINGS notes blur or inverse ghosting as refresh rate falls. That means the fastest advertised response setting is not automatically the cleanest setting across the entire refresh range. Use the monitor’s available combinations and judge motion at the frame rates you actually achieve.

Competitive games

At 3K/330Hz, the G80HS can provide a very fluid presentation when the GPU sustains high frame rates. The resolution remains sharper than conventional 1440p, but the monitor still asks less of the graphics card than 6K. This is the strongest argument for buying the G80HS instead of a conventional 4K high-refresh display.

Single-player and cinematic games

6K makes fine geometry and distant objects exceptionally crisp, but HDR limitations are easier to notice in dark scenes and bright effects. OLED alternatives deliver deeper blacks, stronger perceived contrast and more vivid highlights, even when their resolution is lower.

How good are the G80HS picture quality and HDR?

Sharpness is the G80HS’s clearest image-quality advantage. The 6K mode provides a dense, clean image and the panel’s reported color coverage is broad enough for games and general creative work. The weaknesses are contrast and HDR impact.

Contrast and black levels

RTINGS reports low contrast and gray blacks, while WIRED measured approximately 2,000:1. In a bright room, that may be less distracting. In a dark room, black bars, shadows and night scenes will look lifted compared with an OLED display.

HDR performance

The monitor carries HDR10 and HDR10+ Gaming branding, but the label does not guarantee OLED-like HDR. RTINGS found weak highlights and ineffective local dimming. Bright effects therefore lack the intensity and separation that competing OLED and Mini-LED monitors can produce. HDR can still add useful range in supported games, but it is not the reason to choose this model over an OLED.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color and bit depth

Tom’s Hardware reports 10-bit operation and more than 90 percent DCI-P3 coverage in testing. That supports saturated game content and demanding desktop visuals, but color coverage is only one part of image quality; the IPS black level and limited highlight performance remain visible in HDR scenes.

Is the G80HS suitable for work and productivity?

It is a strong productivity monitor when resolution is the priority. A 32-inch 6K canvas can hold multiple windows with fine text and detailed images, and IPS avoids the static-image burn-in concern associated with OLED. The stand’s height, tilt, swivel and 90-degree pivot adjustments also help position the screen for long sessions or portrait-oriented documents.

The main productivity compromise is connectivity. There is no USB-C video input, so a laptop cannot be connected with one cable for display, charging and peripherals. The monitor has a USB upstream connection and two USB-A downstream ports, but that is a smaller hub than many premium work displays provide. Laptop users may need a separate dock or multiple cables.

For a desktop workstation with a powerful GPU, the missing USB-C input is less consequential. For a laptop-first desk, it is a meaningful limitation that should be included in the buying decision.

What ports, audio and ergonomic features does it have?

The G80HS includes one DisplayPort 2.1 input, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, a USB upstream connection, two USB-A downstream ports and a 3.5mm headphone output. Those video ports are appropriate for the monitor’s bandwidth demands. There is no built-in speaker system, so audio must come from headphones, external speakers or the connected computer.

WIRED reports height, tilt, swivel and 90-degree pivot adjustment. Tom’s Hardware describes solid build quality, while WIRED criticizes the basic plastic design for the price. Treat that as a reviewer disagreement rather than a measured defect: the stand is versatile, but the materials may not feel as premium as the price suggests.

What is the difference between the G80HS and G80SH?

The names are close, but the products target different priorities.

Model Panel and resolution Where it has the advantage Main trade-off
Odyssey G80HS S32HG80 32-inch Fast IPS; 6K at 165Hz or 3K at 330Hz Highest resolution, bright-room usability and no OLED burn-in concern Gray blacks, weaker HDR and no USB-C video input
Odyssey OLED G80SH S32HG802S 4K QD-OLED Deeper blacks, stronger HDR, richer color and faster-feeling OLED motion Lower resolution and OLED static-image burn-in considerations
Odyssey OLED G73SH S32HG732S 4K OLED More balanced OLED image and motion quality Lower resolution than the G80HS and less bright in a well-lit room

Choose the G80HS when 6K desktop detail, high brightness and the 3K/330Hz switch are central to your use. Choose the G80SH or G73SH when black level, HDR and OLED motion clarity matter more than 6K resolution.

How does the G80HS compare with a Mini-LED or productivity 6K monitor?

Alternative What it does better What the G80HS does better
LG 27GM950B-B Mini-LED local dimming, deeper blacks and stronger HDR Higher 6K resolution and a similar dual-mode idea
ASUS ProArt Display 6K PA32QCV Larger hub and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity for productivity Higher gaming refresh and 3K/330Hz mode

These are not interchangeable upgrades. Mini-LED is the more logical direction for someone who values HDR and dark-room contrast, while a productivity-oriented 6K display with Thunderbolt 4 is better for a laptop-based workstation. The Samsung is the specialist option for buyers who want unusually high resolution and unusually high refresh in one chassis.

Is the Samsung Odyssey G80HS worth its price?

At Samsung’s listed US price of $1,599.99, the value case is narrow. You are paying for a rare combination—6K, 165Hz, and a 3K/330Hz mode—not for the best HDR or the most complete workstation connectivity. A buyer who will use only one mode can obtain a more focused monitor for less money.

Independent retailer snapshots cited in reviews place the monitor around $1,300–$1,333. At that level, the G80HS becomes more defensible for a high-end PC owner who needs 6K sharpness for work and wants 330Hz available for competitive games. The price is still high, but the dual-mode capability has a clearer purpose.

  • Buy at a sale price if: you own a top-tier GPU, need 6K text and detail, play competitive games, and accept IPS-level HDR.
  • Choose an OLED instead if: dark-room contrast, HDR impact and motion clarity matter more than 6K resolution.
  • Choose a productivity 6K model instead if: USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 docking is essential and gaming refresh is secondary.
  • Wait if: you cannot currently drive either high-refresh mode or the price is close to the full list price without a clear need for its unique features.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the exact model: look for G80HS S32HG80 and the regional SKU LS32HG802ESXZA in the United States. Do not substitute the similarly named 4K OLED G80SH.
  2. Verify your GPU outputs: confirm DisplayPort 2.1 or HDMI 2.1 and sufficient performance for your intended mode.
  3. Decide which mode you will actually use: 6K/165Hz for detail and desktop work, or 3K/330Hz for competitive gaming.
  4. Account for your audio setup: there are no internal speakers.
  5. Plan laptop connectivity: the monitor lacks USB-C video input, so include a separate dock or additional cables if needed.
  6. Check the current listing: verify regional SKU, price, stock, firmware and included cables before ordering, because those details can change.

What are the main drawbacks and how can you work around them?

HDR looks flatter than expected

Use the monitor primarily for its sharp SDR image and high refresh, or choose an OLED/Mini-LED model if HDR is central to your games and films. No setting can turn IPS black levels into OLED blacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-refresh modes are difficult to drive

Lower demanding game settings, use the 3K mode for competitive titles, and reserve 6K for applications and games your GPU can sustain. The dual-mode design exists to let you make that trade rather than force every workload into 6K.

No single-cable laptop setup

Connect video through DisplayPort or HDMI and add a separate dock for charging and peripherals. If one-cable laptop operation is a purchase requirement, select a display with USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 instead.

Motion artifacts appear at lower frame rates

Because RTINGS reports blur or inverse ghosting as refresh rate falls, evaluate overdrive and Adaptive-Sync combinations at your normal frame rates instead of relying only on the 1ms GTG claim. Tom’s Hardware also reports that Adaptive-Sync and overdrive cannot be used together, so the available trade-off should be tested with your games.

Who should buy the Samsung Odyssey G80HS?

The best match is a desktop PC owner with an exceptionally powerful GPU, a 32-inch workspace, and a real need for both dense 6K detail and very high-refresh competitive gaming. The monitor is also attractive to users who prefer IPS for bright rooms or want to avoid OLED burn-in concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a poor fit if your priority is cinematic HDR, perfect blacks, built-in speakers, one-cable laptop docking or the lowest possible cost. In those cases, an OLED, Mini-LED or productivity-focused 6K display addresses the priority more directly.

The G80HS is therefore a specialized success. It moves high pixel density and high refresh closer together than most monitors, but its compromises are obvious at a premium price. Buy it for the dual-mode capability—not because its IPS HDR picture surpasses OLED.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6K noticeably sharper than 4K on a 32-inch monitor?

Yes. At the same 32-inch size, 6K places many more pixels into each inch, so small type and fine interface details can look cleaner at a comfortable scaling level. The benefit is most apparent in desktop applications and high-resolution content; it does not automatically improve a low-resolution video or game asset.

Does the G80HS make sense if I mostly use a laptop?

Only if you are comfortable adding a separate dock or extra cables. The monitor has USB-A ports and video inputs, but no USB-C display input, so it cannot provide the simplest single-cable laptop connection that many desk setups expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I leave the monitor in 3K/330Hz mode all the time?

You can, but you would give up the extra workspace and text density that justify the monitor’s 6K panel. Many owners will get more value by using 6K for desktop work and switching to 3K only for games that benefit from extremely high frame rates.

Is IPS safer than OLED for a static desktop?

IPS does not carry the same long-term static-image burn-in concern associated with OLED, which is useful for always-visible toolbars, browser windows and office applications. That advantage comes with weaker black levels and HDR contrast than OLED.
