Samsung NU6900: At First Glance

Samsung released some entry-level TVs in 2018, one of which is the NU6900. The Samsung NU6900 is a 4K smart television that is available in six different models/sizes.

However, in this review article, we’ll be discussing the 70-inch model of the NU6900 – the Samsung NU6900 70. Similar to the Samsung NU6900 65 that we reviewed earlier and other sizes of the television, this 70-inch Samsung television packs a lot of interesting features.

These features include a decent 4K resolution display, Tizen OS with SmartHub interface, and a cable management system. With these features, the 70-inch Samsung NU6900 had a reasonable starting price of $499.98 in March 2022 (when I wrote this review).

Having said all that, I am sure you are interested in knowing more about the television’s features. Well, to know more, you need to read the subsequent sections below.

Samsung NU6900: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The Samsung NU6900 comes with a very simple but brilliant design. Although the television is entirely made of plastic, it looks good and classy like high-end televisions.

However, this Samsung television features fairly thick bezels surrounding its 70-inch display. Furthermore, these bezels have a glossy-black finish and they might cause a bit of distraction when viewing the TV.

On a bright note, the bottom bezel houses a “Samsung” inscription that adds to the television’s sleekness.

Moving on, the Samsung NU6900 comes with a pair of attachable legs which are made of plastic and have a textured finish. However, one design flaw with the legs is that they are not tall.

Thereby, narrowing the space at the bottom of the TV where the soundbar should fit. Regardless, the short legs of the television are quite sturdy and offer enough stability.

Hence, the Samsung NU6900 should not wobble even when nudged with force.

That said, let us now proceed to discuss the back of the television. On that note, the Samsung NU6900 has a plain black textured panel on its back.

Furthermore, the entire back panel of this television is made of solid plastic with some dented stripes at the bottom edge. If you look up close at these dented stripes, you will notice some clips that serve as a form of a cable management system.

That said, now let us talk about wall mounting the television in case you don’t want to place it on a desk. To start with, the Samsung NU6900 features 200 x 200 mm VESA holes that you can use to wall-mount the TV.

Moreover, the television shouldn’t bulge out of the wall when wall-mounted due to its slim form factor. Speaking of the form factor, this brings us to talk about the weight and dimension of this television.

The Samsung NU6900 measures 1574.8 x 60.9 x 873.7 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 24720.7 g. Impressively, this television is lighter than some smaller-sized televisions.

For instance, the TV is lighter than the 65-inch Samsung UA65NU7100 and Samsung UN65NU6950 which both weigh 25000 g each.

Therefore, the Samsung NU6900 deserves a rating of an eight out of ten in this design review section.

Samsung NU6900: Display Features and Picture Quality

The Samsung NU6900 boasts a gorgeous 70-inch display with a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. Performance-wise, this display should be able to deliver clear, realistic, and colorful picture quality thanks to its 4K resolution.

Apart from its 4K resolution, this television’s display comes with an impressive contrast ratio. For better understanding, the contrast ratio is the proportion between the brightest and darkest shades of a display.

Furthermore, a good contrast ratio implies that the display will be able to render deep blacks. Impressively, the Samsung NU6900’s display registered a good native contrast ratio of 6,107:1.

As a result, this television’s display should be able to produce deep black. Thereby, making the television suitable for watching films with lots of dark scenes or dark room viewing.

Sadly, the Samsung NU6900’s display doesn’t have local dimming. For clarity, the local dimming is a picture technology that strengthens the black level and contrast ratio of a display by dimming backlight layers.

Thus, if the display had local dimming, blacks will look darker than they would if the display doesn’t have local dimming. Nevertheless, because this television’s display already has a high contrast ratio, the lack of local dimming isn’t a major issue.

However, a disappointing issue about the Samsung NU6900’s display is that it doesn’t produce enough brightness for bright room viewing. Basically, the display recorded a peak brightness of 273 nits.

With this peak brightness, the display can easily get overwhelmed by glares from direct sunlight or bright areas. Therefore, for a good viewing experience, a dim or moderately-lit room will be the best place to view the Samsung NU6900.

Moving on to the viewing angles of this display, this is an important display feature if you watch TV with a large group of people in a wide room. This is because a good viewing angle is important for making the display viewable from acute or extreme angles.

However, you might want to brace up because the Samsung NU6900’s display doesn’t have good viewing angles. Hence, when you view the display off-center or from extreme angles, you might observe slight brightness loss or color distortion.

In addition to all the display features we have discussed in this section, let’s also talk about HDR (High Dynamic Range). To begin with, the Samsung NU6900’s display supports HDR which enhances its brightness and color accuracy when viewing HDR-supported content.

For context, you will mostly find HDR-supported content on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+.

In terms of motion handling, the Samsung NU6900 offers a response time of 16.2 milliseconds. Briefly, response time refers to how fast display pixels can change from one color to another.

Thus, with a response time as fast as 16.2 milliseconds, there will be minimal blur trails when the Samsung NU6900’s display is viewing fast-motion content. Thus, the Samsung NU6900 is ideal for watching sports, action movies, and other fast-motion content.

Moving on, the Samsung NU6900’s display has an input lag of 22.5 milliseconds. For more understanding, input lag is the delay between when a display registers a signal input and when the signal input is sent.

Thus, for an enjoyable gaming experience, a display must have an input lag of 15 milliseconds or less. Well, as you can see above, the Samsung NU6900’s display’s input lag is nowhere near 15 milliseconds.

Thus, the Samsung NU6900 isn’t ideal for competitive or hardcore gaming. However, with its display’s low input lag, the television is okay for casual or not-too-serious gaming.

In conclusion, the Samsung NU6900 offers a 4K display with adequate picture quality. However, the television’s display has some disappointing flaws such as its poor viewing angles and mediocre peak brightness.

Therefore, I will be rating the Samsung NU6900 an eight out of ten in this display review section.

Samsung NU6900: Sound Features

The Samsung NU6900 is equipped with a pair of 2CH 20-watts speakers. That’s a total sound output of 40-watts, which should be fairly loud enough to fill a large room with sound.

Moreover, the television’s speakers offer decent audio quality. However, due to the fact that the television lacks a subwoofer, its speakers won’t be able to produce adequate bass.

Thus, bass-heavy movies or movies with lots of rumbling and thumping sounds might not be particularly suitable to watch on the Samsung NU6900. As a result, to get an adequate amount of bass, you should consider purchasing a soundbar.

On a positive note, the Samsung NU6900’s speakers can produce clear and well-balanced audio, good enough for clear dialogue. For clarity, dialogue refers to the conversation between two or more characters in a movie or TV show.

Another sound feature of the Samsung NU6900 worth talking about is its compatibility with Dolby Digital Plus. Dolby Digital Plus is a sound technology that allows a sound device to produce 5-channel surround audio.

Thus, creating an illusion that sound is coming from numerous angles of your environment. As a result, when viewing the Samsung NU6900, you sure will get a cinematic audio and viewing experience.

That said, the Samsung NU6900 offers an average distortion performance. To be more specific, on a THD test, the television delivered a score of 0.541% at 80% volume and 1.189% at maximum volume.

For clarity, THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test is an audio test that evaluates the amount of distortion that a sound device can produce. Furthermore, on this test, a score of 1% or below means the sound device produces minimal distortion.

However, if the score is above 1%, that means the sound device produces a noticeable amount of distortion. Well, according to the Samsung NU6900’s THD test result, the television will produce minimal distortion at a moderate volume level (80% or below).

However, at the maximum volume level, the distortion that the television will produce will be noticeable and significant. In case you’re wondering, distortion in this context is the deformation of sound frequencies, allowing the sound device to produce disturbing sound quality.

Having considered all we have discussed in this sound features review section, I will rate the Samsung NU6900 a seven out of ten.

Samsung NU6900: Ports and Connectivity Features

Port-wise, the Samsung NU6900 offers a limited number of ports. To make things worse, all the ports are located on the back of the television.

As a result, users won’t be able to easily access the ports whenever the television is mounted on the wall. Having said that, let us now discuss the types of ports that the television comes with.

To start with, the Samsung NU6900 features two HDMI ports. As with most televisions nowadays, one of these television’s HDMI ports supports ARC (Audio Return Channel).

Hence, using the HDMI-ARC port, users will be able to connect a soundbar or ARC-supported speakers to the television. Aside from the HDMI ports, this television also comes with a single USB port, RF port, Ethernet port, and an optical digital out.

Meanwhile, for wireless connectivity, the Samsung NU6900 features an in-built 802.11 ac WiFi but lacks Bluetooth.

Next up in this section is the remote control of the television. To begin with, the Samsung NU6900 comes with a standard (TM1240A) remote control that is very basic but functional.

To give more details, the TM1240A remote control features a chunky design and is made of plastic with a matte black finish. In addition to that, the remote control comes with quite a number of buttons.

Among its numerous buttons includes a full number pad, volume and channel rockers, and a plus-shaped navigation button.

However, this television’s remote lacks dedicated buttons for quick access to streaming apps. Another thing that the remote lack is a built-in microphone for voice input.

All things considered, I will rate the Samsung NU6900 a seven out of ten in this ports and connectivity review section.

Samsung NU6900: Smart Features

Like other Samsung televisions, the Samsung NU6900 comes with the Tizen operating system. This operating system offers an easy-to-use interface called SmartHub.

Unfortunately, navigating this interface isn’t smooth as it lags a lot and takes a bit of time to respond to commands. In addition to that, the operating system has a lot of ads on its interface that users cannot disable.

On the bright side, the Tizen operating system features quite a number of pre-installed streaming services and applications. To mention a few, the OS comes with Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, HBO, and so on.

Moreover, if you don’t find your choice among the pre-installed streaming apps, you can download more apps from the Samsung Store.

As a matter of fact, the Samsung NU6900’s Tizen OS supports AirPlay. Thus, you will be able to stream/share content from any Apple device to the television.

Besides, you can also stream/share content from Andriod and Widows devices to the Samsung NU6900. To do this, you need to download the SmartThings application on the device.

Aside from streaming content to the television, you can also use this SmartThings application to control the television.

In conclusion, the Samsung NU6900 features an interesting operating system that offers plenty of streaming apps and supports AirPlay. However, the interface of the OS lags and contains advertisements that users cannot disable.

Hence, I will be rating the Samsung NU6900 an eight out of ten in this smart feature review section.
