Samsung phones can store Gallery pre-edit backups outside the Gallery app’s normal view, and Device Care’s storage review is where to check for them. If your phone lists these files, you can inspect and delete unwanted ones without deleting other photos—but first confirm what is synced to the cloud. The 12GB in the original headline is a device-specific result, not a typical recovery promise. Also, Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026, so cleanup advice now depends on whether you use OneDrive’s separate Camera backup.
Why is Samsung storage full when I cannot find the photos?
One possible reason is that Samsung Gallery has saved pre-edit backups that do not appear among the ordinary photos and videos you browse in Gallery. SamMobile reports that these files can be found through Device Care’s storage review, rather than by scrolling through Gallery albums. They are not present on every Galaxy phone, so treat them as a candidate to check—not an automatic explanation for a full device.
There are other common places to look. Samsung says pictures and videos can use substantial storage, and specifically recommends reviewing unneeded Gallery items, screenshots, and the Trash. Large videos and duplicate exports can take up local space even when they are easy to overlook in a camera roll.

Where do I find Samsung Gallery pre-edit backups?
On the interface documented by SamMobile, open Settings > Device care > Storage > Review files. If pre-edit backups appear, inspect them and select only the files you no longer need.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care, then Storage.
- Open Review files.
- Look for the pre-edit-backup category, if it is shown, and review its contents.
- Select unwanted files and choose Delete or, if offered, Delete all.
Do not treat Delete all as a harmless way to clear a cache: review the listed files first and keep anything you might need. If Device Care does not show a pre-edit-backup category, the report does not establish that your phone has these files. Menu names and layouts can differ between One UI versions and device models; Samsung’s storage guide and SamMobile’s path describe interfaces that may not match your screen exactly.
How can I reclaim storage without losing important photos?
Use a staged cleanup: check Device Care for the hidden category, review ordinary Gallery items, and empty Gallery Trash only when you are certain you do not need its contents. Before deleting a photo that matters, check its backup destination and sync status. A cloud badge or the presence of a file in a cloud app is not enough to assume that deleting it from Gallery will leave the cloud copy alone.

1. Inspect the Device Care list
Start with the pre-edit-backup review above. Delete only the unwanted files you can identify. If the category is absent, move on; do not change unrelated settings in an attempt to make it appear.
2. Review large or unnecessary Gallery items
Look for videos you no longer need, duplicate exports, and screenshots. Samsung’s documented deletion path is Gallery > Albums, select the items, then tap Delete. This moves ordinary deleted items to Gallery Trash rather than immediately removing them permanently.
3. Empty Gallery Trash if you want the space back permanently
Moving a file to Trash and emptying Trash are separate actions. To remove the Trash contents permanently using Samsung’s documented path, open Gallery > Menu > Trash > More options > Empty > Delete. Check the contents before confirming: emptying Trash is the step that removes the recovery option provided by that folder.

4. Verify cloud status before deleting synced photos
Samsung Gallery can sync selected albums with OneDrive, but that integration is no longer a current direct-sync option after September 30, 2026. More importantly, Microsoft describes the former Gallery integration as bidirectional: deleting a synced item in Gallery or OneDrive moves it to the Recycle Bin and deletes it from synced devices. Do not use ordinary Gallery deletion as though it were guaranteed to remove only the phone copy.
5. Make a separate copy when the originals matter
For an additional safety copy, export important originals to a computer or a compatible USB-C flash drive before deleting them. Compatibility and capacity depend on the Galaxy model and drive; Samsung’s cited storage guidance does not establish that every phone supports every USB drive. Confirm that the copied files open from the destination before removing the phone copies.
What changed with Samsung Gallery and OneDrive in 2026?
Microsoft’s notice says, “Starting September 30, 2026, Samsung Gallery will no longer sync directly with OneDrive.” That date has passed. Samsung Cloud’s notice likewise says that photos and videos already on OneDrive remain there, but disappear from Samsung Gallery unless the user takes action. In practical terms, do not expect the former Gallery-to-OneDrive connection to keep maintaining the same Gallery view or automatic sync after the cutoff.

Microsoft’s documented continuation for automatic camera uploads is to use Camera backup inside the OneDrive app:
- Open OneDrive.
- Tap the account profile.
- Choose Camera backup.
- Enable Camera backup and grant access to photos and videos when prompted.
This is a separate app workflow, not a way to restore the discontinued direct Gallery sync. Microsoft says existing photos in OneDrive remain accessible through OneDrive; they may no longer be visible in Samsung Gallery. If you are uncertain whether a particular original is present in OneDrive, check the OneDrive account itself before deleting the phone copy.

What should I do if the menus or sync behavior do not match?
Samsung notes that its storage interface can vary, and the exact Device Care path may differ on newer One UI layouts and older versions. If Review files is missing, search the available Settings screens for Storage or Device care, then inspect the categories your phone actually presents.
