Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 can still be a good Android smartwatch in 2026—but mainly at a discounted price, and especially if you use a Samsung phone. Its Wear OS app support, bright sapphire-covered display and broad health-sensor suite remain useful. Its main compromises are short battery life, limitations on ECG and blood-pressure features with non-Samsung phones, and newer models that offer a larger display, newer hardware and a longer support runway.

Think of it as a value pick rather than the Android smartwatch to buy at any price. The 44mm version is the practical choice for a larger screen and more battery capacity; the 40mm is smaller and lighter but has less room for battery. Decide between Bluetooth and LTE based on whether you need the watch to stay connected when your phone is not with you.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 still worth buying?

It is worth considering if you find it substantially below the price of a newer Galaxy Watch and want Wear OS apps, Samsung Health integration and a capable fitness-and-health feature set. It is a harder recommendation at a current-flagship price: newer Galaxy Watch generations have moved ahead on display size, processor generation, support horizon and, in some models, battery capacity.

Wareable’s comparison coverage describes the Watch 5 as obsolete beside newer generations, while still calling it a strong pickup at a cheap price. That captures its position in 2026: its value depends on the deal and on whether the newer models’ improvements matter to you. The available data does not establish current street prices, so treat the 2022 US launch prices below as historical reference points, not a guide to what a seller should charge today.

It makes sense if

  • You use an Android phone and want access to Wear OS apps rather than a more limited proprietary smartwatch platform.
  • You use a Samsung phone and will make use of Samsung Health and the Samsung-specific health features available to your phone and region.
  • You find a well-priced new, clearance or refurbished unit and are comfortable with charging about daily in heavier use.
  • You prefer a sapphire-covered Super AMOLED screen and a broad selection of health sensors over multi-day endurance.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want several days between charges: the Watch 5’s real-world endurance is generally around one to two days, and demanding use can mean daily charging.
  • You need ECG or blood-pressure monitoring but do not have a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, app access and regional support.
  • You are paying close to the price of a newer flagship and value its larger display, newer processor or longer support runway.
  • You use an iPhone: the available evidence here does not establish a reliable iPhone-compatibility path, so confirm compatibility for the exact model and region before buying.

What are the Galaxy Watch 5’s sizes and specifications?

Samsung sold the Watch 5 in 40mm and 44mm case sizes, each with Bluetooth or LTE connectivity. The display and battery are the clearest practical differences: the 44mm has a 1.4-inch, 450 × 450 Super AMOLED display and a 410mAh battery, while the 40mm has a 1.2-inch, 396 × 396 display and a 284mAh battery.

Water and dust rating 5ATM and IP68; MIL-STD-810H durability rating 5ATM and IP68; MIL-STD-810H durability rating

These are Samsung’s published product specifications, not measurements of real-world battery life or a guarantee that every feature works in every country. Both sizes share the core processor, memory, storage and connectivity options; choosing the larger case buys a bigger display and battery, not a different performance tier.

What does the hardware feel like to use?

The Super AMOLED display is bright, with colors reviewers found accurate, and it supports an always-on mode. Sapphire crystal is a meaningful durability upgrade over the prior generation’s Gorilla Glass approach. The watch also retains a digital bezel for navigating the interface. Reviewers found it less satisfying and slower to use than a physical rotating bezel, so do not buy the Watch 5 expecting that tactile interaction.

Samsung lists 5ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings. These indicate a watch designed for water and dust exposure and tested against durability criteria, but they should not be read as a promise that the device is indestructible or suitable for every high-pressure or extreme environment. Follow the care guidance for the specific watch and avoid treating a rating as protection from impact damage.

Should you choose the 40mm or 44mm Galaxy Watch 5?

Choose based on fit and readability first, then battery headroom. The 44mm is the better default for a medium-to-large wrist, a more legible screen or anyone trying to stretch time between charges. The 40mm is the less bulky option, but its smaller battery leaves less margin for demanding days.

Rank #2
SAMSUNG Galaxy Watch 5 Pro 45mm Bluetooth Smartwatch w/Body, Health, Fitness and Sleep Tracker, Black (Renewed)
  • Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.
Choose Best for Trade-off
40mm A smaller or lighter-feeling watch; a wearer who prefers a compact case. Smaller 1.2-inch display and 284mAh battery, so expect less battery headroom.
44mm A medium-to-large wrist, easier screen reading and the largest available battery capacity. Larger case; it may feel bulky on a smaller wrist.

If possible, try the case size on before buying, especially if you plan to sleep in the watch for sleep tracking. A display that is easier to read can be worth the larger case, but fit is personal; the battery advantage does not make 44mm the right choice for every wrist.

How long does the Galaxy Watch 5 battery last?

Plan for roughly one to two days in ordinary use, not multi-day endurance. Battery results depend on screen settings, notifications, health monitoring and workouts; GPS, high brightness, always-on display and frequent alerts can turn it into a daily-charge watch.

What reviewers observed

Wareable’s 2022 test of a 44mm unit began at 9 a.m. and included notifications, continuous health and sleep monitoring, GPS workouts and spot measurements. The watch was around 30% by the end of the day. Wareable found Samsung’s 40-hour estimate broadly plausible under its test conditions, and reported roughly 10% battery use during an hour of running. In that same review, charging for 30 minutes brought the watch to about 45%.

SamMobile’s later review characterized normal endurance as one to two days. It found that heavy workouts, high brightness, always-on display and frequent notifications pushed the watch toward daily charging, and reported reaching 85% charge after about an hour in its test. These are reviewer observations from particular units and usage patterns, not a runtime guarantee or a directly controlled comparison between reviews.

How to get closer to the longer end of that range

  • Turn off the always-on display if you do not need the time visible continuously.
  • Reduce screen brightness and shorten the time the display stays awake.
  • Review which apps are sending notifications and disable alerts you do not need on your wrist.
  • Expect GPS workouts and frequent measurements to consume more power than an ordinary day.
  • If sleep monitoring matters, build charging time into a routine rather than assuming the watch will last several days without a top-up.

Those are practical ways to reduce demand, not a promise of a particular number of extra hours. If frequent charging is a deal-breaker, a watch with stronger multi-day endurance is a better fit than trying to tune the Watch 5 into one.

What health, sleep and fitness features does it offer?

The Watch 5 combines optical heart-rate tracking, an electrical heart signal, bioelectrical impedance analysis and temperature sensing with sleep tracking, blood oxygen measurement and exercise features. Samsung’s BioActive sensor combines the first three measurement approaches; the watch also includes accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic and light sensors.

Sleep, exercise and GPS

In TechRadar’s review, sleep tracking compared well with a Withings ScanWatch HR. The reviewer also found automatic exercise detection reliable after about 10 minutes of walking, heart-rate readings generally close to a chest strap, and GPS accurate in its testing. Those findings are useful indications of reviewer experience, not proof that every reading will match another device or that tracking is clinically validated.

What body-composition readings can and cannot tell you

Bioelectrical impedance features produce body-composition estimates such as body-fat readings. TechRadar cautioned that these differ from clinical or caliper methods. They are more useful for following your own readings over time under consistent conditions than treating an individual result as an exact measurement of body fat.

Why ECG and blood pressure need extra checking

ECG and blood-pressure features are not simply guaranteed by the watch hardware. Tech Advisor reported that they require Samsung Health Monitor, distributed through the Galaxy Store, and were restricted to Samsung Galaxy phones in its tested setup. Availability also depends on the app and regional support. If these features are central to your purchase, verify that they are supported for your phone, location and intended use before buying; owners of Pixel, OnePlus and other non-Samsung Android phones should not assume they will have access.

Does the Galaxy Watch 5 work well with non-Samsung Android phones?

The watch can be used with Android phones beyond Samsung’s own, and Wear OS gives it access to a broader app ecosystem than many proprietary smartwatch platforms. The limitation is that Samsung’s own health and ecosystem features do not all travel with it: Samsung Health Monitor-dependent ECG and blood-pressure functions are constrained by phone, app and regional requirements.

  • Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.

Samsung-phone owners have the smoothest path through Samsung Health, Samsung Health Monitor and Galaxy Store-dependent features. TechRadar also noted imperfect synchronization between Samsung Health and Google Fit. If you rely on a particular fitness-data service, check how the apps you use exchange information before treating the watch as a seamless bridge between them.

Galaxy Watch 5 Bluetooth vs LTE: which should you buy?

Bluetooth is the sensible value choice when you usually have your phone nearby. LTE is for people who want calls, messages and connected features to remain available when they leave the phone behind; it adds upfront cost and requires a compatible carrier plan.

Version Choose it if Cost consideration
Bluetooth Your phone is usually within reach, and you do not need the watch to maintain cellular connectivity on its own. Lower launch price than the matching LTE size; no watch cellular plan required.
LTE You want calls, messages and connected features away from your phone. Higher launch price than Bluetooth and an additional carrier plan; check carrier and regional compatibility.

At launch in the United States, TechRadar listed prices of $279.99 for the 40mm Bluetooth model, $299 for 44mm Bluetooth, $329.99 for 40mm LTE and $349 for 44mm LTE. Those are 2022 launch prices, not current prices or an indication of current availability. LTE may also be less useful if the phone is nearly always with you, so consider whether independent connectivity is worth both the device premium and ongoing plan expense.

How does the Galaxy Watch 5 compare with newer watches?

The Watch 5’s strongest comparison points are Wear OS app support, Samsung integration, sensor breadth and value when discounted. Newer Galaxy Watch models lead on display size, processor generation, support runway and, in some models, battery. The best choice depends less on a universal ranking than on which of those trade-offs matters to you.

Priority Why the Watch 5 may fit When another watch may be better
Apps and Android smartwatch flexibility Wear OS offers a broad app ecosystem; the Watch 5 launched with Wear OS 3.5 and One UI Watch 4.5. A newer Galaxy Watch may offer a more current hardware and support horizon; the precise value depends on the model and price.
Samsung services and health sensors It combines Samsung Health integration with optical heart rate, electrical heart signal, bioelectrical impedance and other sensors. ECG and blood-pressure requirements make phone and regional compatibility especially important; check before choosing based on those functions.
Battery endurance The 44mm provides the larger Watch 5 battery, at 410mAh versus 284mAh for 40mm. Garmin and Huawei alternatives may suit people who prioritize multi-day endurance; actual model-specific battery figures are not established here.
Phone compatibility It is an Android smartwatch with its smoothest feature path on Samsung phones. Apple Watch is the more suitable direction for iPhone users; verify compatibility requirements for any watch before purchase.
Price A substantial discount can make the Watch 5 appealing for its app support and feature set. At a price close to a current flagship, newer hardware and support runway may justify choosing a newer model.

The available comparisons do not establish a model-by-model performance benchmark or exact current support end date. Compare the exact Watch 5 offer against a specific newer watch rather than assuming every successor has the same battery, display or feature advantage.

What should you check before buying a discounted or refurbished Watch 5?

Because the Watch 5’s recommendation depends on price and configuration, compare the actual unit—not just the product name—with your phone, wrist and charging habits. A low price is less compelling if the unit is the wrong size, has a condition problem or is an LTE version you cannot use with your carrier.

  1. Confirm the size and connectivity. Check whether the listing is 40mm or 44mm and Bluetooth or LTE. The size changes display and battery capacity; LTE changes how the watch can stay connected and whether a carrier plan is relevant.
  2. Check condition and seller terms. For a refurbished or used unit, review the seller’s condition description, return policy and warranty terms. These vary by seller and are not established by the watch’s original specifications.
  3. Verify health-feature access. If ECG or blood pressure is a deciding factor, confirm phone, Galaxy Store/Samsung Health Monitor and regional support for the exact setup you will use.
  4. Check LTE availability before paying extra. Confirm that your carrier supports the watch and that a plan is available for your account and region.
  5. Compare with current alternatives at the price you can actually buy. Do not use the historical launch prices as a substitute for checking today’s offer and the price of newer models.
  6. Budget for charging. If you use GPS, continuous monitoring, frequent notifications and always-on display, assume that daily charging may be part of ownership.

What is the verdict on the Galaxy Watch 5?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is still a capable Android smartwatch, but it is no longer an uncomplicated flagship recommendation. Buy it when the discount is meaningful, you are comfortable with one-to-two-day battery life, and its health features work with your phone and region. Choose 44mm for readability and battery headroom, or 40mm if compact fit matters more. At near-flagship prices—or if you need long endurance or a longer support runway—a newer alternative is the more sensible purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many years of software updates does the Galaxy Watch 5 have left?

A precise remaining update period or final supported version is not established by the available product and review information. Samsung’s newer generations are described as having a longer support runway, so check Samsung’s current support information for the exact model before buying if update longevity is a priority.

Can I use the Galaxy Watch 5 with an iPhone?

The compatibility information available here establishes its Wear OS and Android use but does not establish a dependable iPhone setup. Before purchasing for an iPhone, confirm current compatibility for the exact watch model and region rather than assuming that its Bluetooth connection alone means the apps and features will work.

Is the Galaxy Watch 5 a medical device for diagnosing health problems?

The cited reviews discuss fitness and wellness measurements, not the watch as a substitute for clinical diagnosis. Treat sensor readings as informational, and rely on a healthcare professional for medical interpretation or decisions.
