For most students who handwrite notes, annotate PDFs, download lecture videos, or want the lowest complete cost, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE is the better value. Samsung includes an S Pen, supports separately sold microSD cards, and gives both the tablet and pen an IP68 rating under its stated laboratory conditions.

Choose the 10th-generation iPad instead if you already use an iPhone or Mac, need iPadOS-specific apps, prefer Apple’s A14 Bionic platform, want a lighter tablet, or value its brighter, higher-resolution listed display. Budget separately for an Apple Pencil.

Quick verdict: which student should buy each tablet?

The right choice depends less on the logo and more on what you carry, write, download, and connect to every day. The Galaxy Tab S9 FE is the stronger all-in-one student bundle because the S Pen is included and storage can be expanded. The iPad 10th generation is the more attractive platform for students already invested in Apple devices or who need a particular iPadOS application.

Choose the Galaxy Tab S9 FE if you… Choose the iPad (10th generation) if you…
Write notes by hand and do not want to purchase a stylus separately. Already use an iPhone or Mac and want to stay in Apple’s software ecosystem.
Keep large PDF collections, downloaded videos, or offline course files. Need an iPadOS-specific app or prefer Apple’s A14 Bionic platform.
Want documented water and dust resistance for the tablet and pen. Prefer a lighter device for commuting.
Use Android devices or Windows PCs and want a flexible file-storage approach. Prefer Apple’s display characteristics, including True Tone and the listed 500-nit brightness.
Need to control the complete accessory cost. Are willing to budget for an Apple Pencil and possibly a keyboard separately.

Neither model should be treated as a professional-grade creative tablet solely from these specifications. For drawing, music production, video editing, or specialist engineering software, verify that the exact app and stylus features you need are available before buying.

Specifications that affect student use

Category Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE iPad (10th generation) What it means for a student
Display 10.9-inch display on Samsung’s product page. Smartprix reports 90Hz and 1,440 × 2,304 pixels for the compared Wi-Fi model. 10.86-inch measured display, 2,360 × 1,640 pixels, 264 ppi, True Tone and 500 nits. The Samsung panel can scroll more smoothly where 90Hz is enabled; the iPad lists higher pixel density and brightness.
Processor and operating system Exynos 1380 with Android. A14 Bionic, six-core CPU, four-core GPU and iPadOS. The iPad is the safer choice when application performance and iPadOS software are priorities; the Samsung suits Android and Windows users.
Stylus S Pen included in the box; Samsung says it is optimized for Samsung Notes and Goodnotes and rated IP68. Supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. The Samsung is ready for handwriting immediately; the iPad requires an additional stylus purchase.
Storage Up to 256GB internal storage plus a separately sold microSD card. 64GB or 256GB fixed storage; Apple’s cited specification page lists no microSD slot. Expandable Samsung storage is useful for large offline libraries. The 64GB iPad is a poor fit for students who keep lots of video locally.
Weight 523g for the cited Wi-Fi model. 477g for the Wi-Fi model. The iPad is about 46g lighter in a backpack.
Battery claims 8,000mAh; Samsung lists up to 16 hours of Wi-Fi internet use. 28.6Wh; Apple lists up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video. Both claims come from different vendor test methods and are not a direct battery-life comparison.
Durability IP68 for the tablet and included S Pen under Samsung’s stated laboratory conditions. No water-resistance rating appears on Apple’s cited specification page. The Samsung has the clearer documented spill and dust-resistance advantage.
Keyboard connection and pricing Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP sheet lists compatible keyboard covers from $59.00 to $199.99; prices can change. Apple confirms a Smart Connector but the cited specification page does not state keyboard pricing. Compare the complete typing setup, not just the tablet price.

Note-taking and handwriting

Galaxy Tab S9 FE: the simpler handwriting package

Samsung says the S Pen ships in the box with the Galaxy Tab S9 FE. That changes the effective price immediately: you can open the tablet, pair or use the pen, and begin writing without adding a stylus to your order. Samsung also says the pen is optimized for Samsung Notes and Goodnotes, two common destinations for handwritten lecture notes and PDF annotation.

The S Pen is rated IP68 along with the tablet under Samsung’s stated laboratory conditions. That does not make the pen indestructible, and it does not remove the need to dry connectors and follow Samsung’s care guidance, but it is a useful distinction for students who write in cafés, laboratories, studios, or crowded lecture halls.

For a note-heavy course load, the practical advantages are fewer purchasing decisions and no need to reserve part of the budget for a compatible stylus. The included pen also makes the Tab S9 FE easier to recommend as a first tablet rather than as an accessory to an existing device.

iPad 10th generation: capable, but pencil cost is separate

Apple lists support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter, so students choosing that model should check the adapter requirement before class starts. Apple’s listed iPad box contents are the iPad, a cable, and a power adapter; the Pencil is not included.

An iPad can therefore be an excellent handwriting device, but its real student cost is the tablet plus the chosen Pencil and any required adapter. If you already own a compatible Pencil, this difference may not matter. If you are buying everything for the first time, the Samsung bundle has the lower-friction path.

Which is better for lecture notes?

Choose the Tab S9 FE when handwritten notes are central and you want the pen included. Choose the iPad when your preferred note-taking application is iPadOS-specific, your existing Apple devices are part of the workflow, or you already own the required Pencil. Both can handle typed notes and PDF markup; the decisive difference in the supplied specifications is what arrives in the box and what must be purchased separately.

Storage for PDFs, recordings, and course media

Galaxy Tab S9 FE: expandable storage

The Tab S9 FE is available with up to 256GB of internal storage and supports a separately sold microSD card. That arrangement is useful when a degree requires several years of scanned readings, downloaded lecture videos, large slide decks, language audio, or offline maps. You can start with a sensible internal capacity and add removable storage as your library grows.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE 10.9-Inch, 128 GB, Lavender (Renewed)
  • Large 10.9-Inch Display: Features a spacious 1920 x 1080 Full HD touchscreen for immersive viewing.
  • Long Battery Life: Provides up to 14 hours of video playback on a single charge for on-the-go entertainment.
  • High-Resolution Camera: Includes a 12MP rear camera and 5MP front camera for crisp photos and videos.
  • Fast Processor: Equipped with a powerful Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor for smooth performance.
  • Built-in Storage: Comes with 128GB of internal storage for apps, media and more.

Check the exact regional model before ordering, because storage configurations and cellular availability can differ by market. A microSD card is an additional purchase, and it should be treated as a storage expansion rather than as a replacement for backups. Keep irreplaceable notes and assignments in a second location.

iPad 10th generation: choose capacity carefully

Apple lists 64GB and 256GB capacities. The cited specification page does not list a microSD slot, so the capacity decision is effectively permanent for local files. The 64GB version can work for cloud-first students who stream most media and regularly remove downloads. It is a risky choice for anyone who stores long lecture recordings, many high-resolution PDFs, or creative project files on the tablet.

The 256GB iPad gives more breathing room, but it also increases the initial purchase cost. Compare that fixed-capacity premium with the price of a larger microSD card for the Samsung, while remembering that removable storage and internal storage do not behave identically in every application.

Storage decision rule

  • Choose Samsung when you want the option to add a memory card later.
  • Choose the 256GB iPad when you prefer Apple’s platform and expect to keep substantial files locally.
  • Choose a 64GB iPad only when your workflow is genuinely cloud-first and you have a dependable connection for downloads and synchronization.

Displays for reading and long study sessions

Samsung identifies a 10.9-inch display on the Tab S9 FE product page. Smartprix reports a 90Hz refresh rate and 1,440 × 2,304 resolution for the compared Wi-Fi model. Where 90Hz is enabled, scrolling through web pages, notes, and long PDFs can look smoother than on a conventional 60Hz panel. The exact behavior can depend on software and power settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple lists the iPad’s display as 10.86 inches when measured, with 2,360 × 1,640 resolution, 264 pixels per inch, True Tone, and 500 nits brightness. Higher listed brightness can help in bright classrooms or libraries, while True Tone adjusts the color character to the surrounding light for a more comfortable reading appearance.

The diagonal sizes are close enough that neither tablet creates a dramatically larger writing canvas. The more meaningful choice is whether you prefer Samsung’s reported high-refresh scrolling and Android presentation or the iPad’s listed brightness, pixel density, and True Tone features. Screen comfort also depends on font size, glare, lighting, and whether you use a matte protector, none of which can be settled from the headline specifications alone.

Performance, operating systems, and student apps

What the hardware says

The Galaxy Tab S9 FE uses Samsung’s Exynos 1380 platform with Android. Samsung positions it for multitasking, streaming, and gaming. That makes it a sensible general-purpose student tablet, especially for users who already rely on Android phones or Windows computers.

The iPad uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip with a six-core CPU and four-core GPU, running iPadOS. Based on those platform specifications and Apple’s application ecosystem, the iPad is the safer performance and app choice when a course depends on a particular iPadOS application or when you want the broadest access to tablet-optimized software associated with Apple’s platform.

No independent benchmark or long-term software-support promise was established for this comparison. Do not interpret the processor names as a guaranteed result for every application. Check the software publisher’s current requirements for specialist tools, exam browsers, remote-desktop clients, coding environments, and accessibility utilities.

Android and Windows households

Students who exchange files with Windows PCs or use Android phones may find the Samsung environment more familiar. The microSD option also fits workflows built around removable media. This is a preference and workflow advantage, not a promise that every application or file format will behave identically across devices.

iPhone and Mac households

Students who already use an iPhone or Mac may value the iPad’s Apple ecosystem integration. If your assignments, messages, files, and preferred apps are already organized around Apple devices, staying on iPadOS can reduce friction. The benefit is strongest when you will actually use those existing devices together; it is less compelling if the rest of your setup is Android and Windows.

Portability and battery claims

Weight in a daily backpack

The cited Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S9 FE weighs 523g. The Wi-Fi iPad weighs 477g, making it approximately 46g lighter before adding a case, keyboard, or stylus. That difference is modest for a short commute but can matter when you carry textbooks, a charger, and a laptop every day.

Remember that accessory weight can erase some of the tablet-only advantage. A keyboard cover, protective case, and charging accessories are part of the load you will actually carry.

How to interpret the battery numbers

Samsung lists an 8,000mAh battery and up to 16 hours of Wi-Fi internet usage time for the Tab S9 FE. Apple lists a 28.6Wh battery and up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi or watching video for the iPad.

Those figures were produced using different vendor test methods, workloads, brightness settings, network conditions, and software versions. They are useful as each manufacturer’s ceiling under its own test, but they are not a controlled head-to-head result. Treat both as devices intended to cover classes and study sessions, then plan to charge before a long day away from an outlet.

Durability and the risk of classroom spills

Samsung describes the Tab S9 FE as “The first water and dust-resistant Galaxy S FE tablet.” Samsung documents IP68 protection for both the tablet and the included S Pen under its stated laboratory conditions. That is the clearest durability advantage in this comparison for students who work around drinks, rain, workshops, or dusty environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s cited specification page does not list a water-resistance rating for the 10th-generation iPad. The absence of a listed rating is not a claim that every spill will cause damage; it means you should not buy this model expecting a documented IP protection level. A case, careful handling, and a dry place in your bag remain sensible for either tablet.

Typing, keyboards, and the real accessory budget

If most of your work is essay writing, a physical keyboard may matter more than a small difference in processor or display specifications. Compare the complete setup: tablet, keyboard, stylus, case, and any adapter.

Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP sheet lists compatible keyboard covers for the Tab S9 FE from $59.00 to $199.99. The sheet also warns that prices are subject to change, so use those figures as a reference rather than a current universal price. Verify the exact keyboard model, regional availability, and live price before ordering.

Apple confirms a Smart Connector on the 10th-generation iPad, but the cited specification page does not publish keyboard pricing. You therefore need to price a compatible keyboard separately. Do not assume that a tablet-only deal is cheaper once you add an Apple Pencil, keyboard, case, and adapter.

Essay-heavy student

Compare keyboard-inclusive totals. The iPad’s lighter body and A14 Bionic platform may appeal to you, but the Apple Pencil and keyboard are separate budgeting decisions. The Samsung can be less expensive to equip depending on the keyboard configuration you select, although live prices vary.

Student with an iPhone or Mac

Favor the iPad when your preferred apps and existing devices are Apple-based. The convenience of staying in one ecosystem can outweigh Samsung’s included-pen and expandable-storage advantages.

Student with an Android phone or Windows PC

Favor the Tab S9 FE when familiar Android workflows, removable storage, and a bundled pen are more valuable than iPadOS-specific software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video-heavy or offline-learning student

Favor Samsung’s expandable storage, or select the 256GB iPad rather than the 64GB model. Do not assume cloud storage will always be available in lecture halls, on trains, or during travel.

Artist or creative-technology student

Neither tablet should be selected solely from these specifications for intensive creative work. Confirm the exact app, file format, stylus behavior, display requirement, and accessory support for your course. The iPad’s A14 platform may be the safer application choice, while the Samsung’s included S Pen lowers the entry cost, but neither statement replaces an app-specific check.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify your primary input. If it is handwriting, include the stylus in the comparison. Samsung includes the S Pen; Apple lists Pencil compatibility but does not include a Pencil in the iPad box.
  2. Estimate local storage. Count downloaded videos, scanned readings, photos, and project files. Choose Samsung if adding a microSD card is important; choose the 256GB iPad if you want fixed internal storage and Apple’s platform.
  3. Check your app requirements. Verify the exact operating-system version and application support for your course, especially for specialist or exam software.
  4. Price the complete kit. Add keyboard, case, charger or adapter requirements, and stylus. Samsung’s September 2025 keyboard MSRP range was $59.00 to $199.99, but prices can change; Apple keyboard pricing is not stated on the cited specification page.
  5. Choose the right network model. Confirm Wi-Fi versus cellular, storage capacity, and regional model numbers before checkout.
  6. Plan backups. A microSD card is not a backup, and cloud synchronization is not a substitute for keeping important assignments in a second location.
  7. Verify live availability. Tablet prices, accessory stock, promotions, and student offers vary by country and date. No universal current street price or student-discount figure is established here.

Important limitations when comparing the two

  • The battery figures are manufacturer claims measured with different methods, so “up to 16 hours” versus “up to 10 hours” is not a laboratory head-to-head result.
  • The 90Hz and 1,440 × 2,304 figures cited for the Samsung refer to a compared Wi-Fi model reported by Smartprix; confirm the specifications for the exact regional model you intend to buy.
  • No independent benchmark was established, so processor advantages should be treated as platform guidance rather than a measured performance ranking.
  • No universal current street price, student discount, or long-term software-support promise was established. Verify those items for your country and purchase date.
  • Apple’s cited specification page does not state keyboard pricing or a water-resistance rating for the 10th-generation iPad.

Final decision

For the typical student who wants handwritten notes, expandable storage, spill resistance, and the fewest extra purchases, buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE. Its included S Pen is the most important value advantage, and the microSD slot makes it easier to keep a growing offline library.

Buy the iPad 10th generation when Apple ecosystem integration, iPadOS applications, A14 Bionic performance, lower weight, or the listed display characteristics matter more than the cost of adding a Pencil and keyboard. Select the storage capacity carefully because there is no listed microSD expansion and the 64GB model can become restrictive for media-heavy study.
