If you’re choosing between the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 18 Pro, the specifications point to different strengths—not a proven overall camera winner. Samsung lists longer telephoto reach; Apple documents variable aperture and extensive pro video options. Which camera is better depends on the photos and videos you actually take, so compare matched scenes and workflows before switching.

Which phones are being compared?

As of October 4, 2026, the current-generation examples are Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 18 Pro. Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18, 2026. Check availability and exact configurations in your market before buying: Apple’s launch announcement.

The published specifications describe capabilities, not how the phones perform in a controlled, side-by-side image test. They therefore cannot establish which phone takes better real-world photos or video.

Compare the camera views you actually use

Megapixel counts alone do not rank image quality. First consider whether you mostly shoot ordinary wide shots, ultrawide scenes, portraits, or distant subjects—and which focal lengths you reach for most often.

Camera detail Galaxy S26 Ultra iPhone 18 Pro
Main camera Samsung lists a 200 MP wide camera. Samsung product page Apple lists a 48 MP main camera in its 48MP Pro Fusion camera system. Apple technical specifications
Ultrawide Not stated in the cited Samsung product information; check the regional product page. 48 MP ultrawide camera. Apple technical specifications
Telephoto reach Samsung lists a 50 MP f/2.9 telephoto with 5x optical zoom and 10x optical-quality zoom. Samsung product page Apple lists a 48 MP telephoto with 4x framing and 8x optical-quality framing. The main camera also supports 2x optical-quality framing. Apple technical specifications

Samsung’s listed 5x optical and 10x optical-quality telephoto range gives it a strong on-paper case if you often photograph distant subjects. “Optical-quality” is the manufacturer’s description; it does not guarantee every crop or scene will look like a dedicated optical lens. Apple’s listed 4x and 8x telephoto framing, plus 2x optical-quality framing from the main camera, offers a different set of views. Compare the same subject at the framing you normally use, especially when you go beyond a phone’s listed optical range. Samsung’s cited product information does not provide a complete lens-by-lens specification table, so check its precise regional page for details not listed here.

Test the situations where camera differences matter to you

Before switching, photograph the same kinds of scenes with both phones if you can. Match the subject, light, framing, and shooting conditions; then judge the files at the size and in the app where you normally view or share them.

  • Moving people or pets: A specification sheet does not show whether the phone captures the moment you want. Compare the same moving subject in similar light.
  • Indoor and low-light scenes: Photograph a person and a static scene. Look at detail, motion blur, and the result you would actually keep rather than relying on a manufacturer’s low-light claim.
  • Ultrawide and portraits: Try the views you use for group photos, rooms, landscapes, or portraits, and compare the resulting framing and appearance.
  • Distant subjects: Test your usual zoom level and a more demanding one. Inspect the actual image rather than treating “optical-quality” as a promise of identical results across scenes.
  • Walking video: Record while moving in a way you normally would. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative stabilization result.
  • Color and sharing: Compare skin tones and how each image looks after your normal sharing app processes it. Color preferences are subjective unless a matched test establishes a difference.

Consider photo controls and file formats

iPhone 18 Pro: variable aperture and editing formats

Apple lists a variable-aperture 48 MP main camera with f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4 settings, alongside manual aperture, shutter-speed, and white-balance controls. It also documents ProRAW and captured HEIF, JPEG, and DNG formats. These options are useful if you intend to adjust capture settings or edit files; they do not automatically improve every snapshot. See Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications.

Galaxy S26 Ultra: Samsung’s aperture claims

Samsung says the S26 Ultra’s wider apertures allow more light to reach the sensor and describes this as a low-light improvement. That is a Samsung product claim, not a comparative test result against iPhone 18 Pro. See Samsung’s product page.

Match the video system to your workflow

For quick clips, the relevant questions are whether the phone delivers the framing and recording experience you want. If you edit video, use log or RAW, need high frame rates, or record to external storage, check that the exact mode fits your production workflow.

iPhone 18 Pro creator options

Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and Apple Log 2. Its technical specifications say ProRes recording is available up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording. Apple also lists USB-C with USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s. These capabilities may matter to a creator recording supported ProRes modes; they are not a camera-quality upgrade required for ordinary photography. Check the drive, cable, capacity, and mode compatibility before relying on an external-recording setup. Galaxy S26 Ultra creator claims

Samsung says the S26 Ultra is the first Galaxy device to support APV, which it describes as a professional-grade video codec. The cited information does not establish a comparative video advantage over Apple. It also does not provide a sufficiently complete Samsung-versus-Apple comparison of frame rates, log workflows, stabilization, audio, heat, or recording duration. Source: Samsung product page.

Plan for file handling and switching

Transferring your library to Galaxy

Samsung describes Smart Switch as a way to transfer photos, videos, contacts, notes, calendar events, apps, and device settings from iOS. Its product page describes wireless transfer through the Smart Switch iOS app and says a cable is a faster option. Check that the data and apps you rely on are covered, then verify the transfer before erasing your old phone; this description is not a guarantee that every app’s data or platform-specific feature will carry over. Moving video files and sharing

If your creator workflow uses supported external ProRes recording, the iPhone’s listed USB 3 connection and compatible storage may affect how you move footage. For general photos, that accessory path may not be relevant. Samsung also describes software-update-dependent sharing with Apple devices that support AirDrop. Confirm current software, regional availability, and recipient-device support before relying on that option. Source: Samsung product page.

Use a task-based decision

  • Choose what to investigate first: If distant subjects are a regular part of your photography, test Samsung’s listed 5x and 10x ranges against the iPhone framing you use. If you mostly shoot everyday wide photos, compare the main-camera results you would share rather than choosing by megapixels.
  • Prioritize the controls you will use: If you want variable-aperture settings, manual controls, or Apple’s documented photo formats, inspect how those fit your editing habits. If you will leave settings automatic, compare finished images instead.
  • Separate casual video from production: If your workflow calls for Apple Log 2, ProRes or ProRes RAW, or externally recorded ProRes, verify that the supported modes, storage, and editing setup meet your needs. Samsung’s APV claim alone does not settle which system is better for your video work.
  • Include migration in the decision: If you are moving from iPhone to Galaxy, list the data and app functions you cannot lose and verify them after using Smart Switch, before wiping the old phone.
