On a Galaxy S22, press and release the Side key and Volume Down key together. The screen flashes, and the image is saved in Gallery. This simultaneous, quick press is the most dependable way to capture a still image. For hands-free use, enable Palm swipe to capture; for a full webpage or document, use Scroll capture after taking a normal screenshot. If you need motion and sound instead of a single image, start Screen recorder from Quick settings. The exact controls can vary with One UI, your carrier, software version, and the app on screen, and protected content may block capture.
How do I take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy S22 with the buttons?
The hardware shortcut is the fastest and most reliable method. It works from almost any ordinary screen and needs no setup.
- Open the page, message, image, map, or other content you want to preserve.
- Press the Side key and Volume Down key at exactly the same time.
- Release both keys immediately. Do not hold either key down for an extended period, because a long press can open power controls or change the volume instead of capturing the screen.
- Look for the brief flash and screenshot controls along the bottom edge. If you do nothing, the still image is saved automatically in Gallery.
The S22 user manual describes this as capturing an image of the screen and automatically creating a Screenshots album in Gallery. A case that does not allow the keys to travel fully can interfere; remove it temporarily if the shortcut behaves inconsistently.
What can I do immediately after pressing the keys?
The temporary toolbar lets you continue working without opening another app. Choose Draw to mark an area, crop to remove unwanted edges, Add tag to make the file easier to find, or Share to send it to another app. The controls disappear after a short time, so tap the action you need before leaving the screen.

How do I screenshot without using the S22 buttons?
Use Palm swipe to capture. The phone detects the edge of your hand moving across the display, which is useful when the keys are difficult to reach or you are holding the phone with one hand.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Open Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Palm swipe to capture.
- Return to the screen you want to capture.
- Place the edge of your hand on one side of the display and swipe fully across to the other side while maintaining contact.
The S22 manual describes the gesture as swiping the edge of your hand left or right across the screen. Use the side of your palm rather than a fingertip, keep the motion flat against the glass, and move steadily rather than making a quick flick.
What if Palm swipe does not trigger a screenshot?
- Recheck the toggle at Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Start with the edge of your hand just inside the display and continue all the way across.
- Try a slower, flatter movement with firm contact.
- Test on a normal Home or Settings screen. Some screens intentionally block capture, so failure in one app does not prove that the gesture is disabled.
- Use the button shortcut as a control test. If buttons work but the gesture does not, the issue is usually the toggle, hand position, or the current app.
Samsung notes that gesture availability can vary by model and software. Menu wording may therefore differ slightly after an update or between carrier editions.

How do I take a long or scrolling screenshot on a Galaxy S22?
Scroll capture combines several screenfuls into one tall image. It is intended for a scrollable webpage, document, conversation, or app view; the control appears only when the current screen can actually scroll.
- Open the scrollable content and position it at the starting point you want.
- Take a normal screenshot with Side plus Volume Down, or use Palm swipe.
- When the bottom toolbar appears, tap Scroll capture, shown as a pair of downward arrows.
- Let the phone move down, then tap the control again or continue the on-screen scrolling until all required content is included.
- Stop when the desired endpoint is visible. The resulting long image is saved with your other screenshots.
Why is Scroll capture missing?
The button is conditional. If the page has no additional content below the current view, there is nothing to extend and the control will not appear. Some websites and apps do not expose a compatible scrolling surface or deliberately disable capture, so a normal screenshot may be the only available option. Try the feature on a standard webpage or a long Settings page to distinguish an app restriction from a phone problem.
Very long pages can produce a large image that is harder to send or read. In those cases, capture only the relevant range, or take several ordinary screenshots and share them as a group.
How do I edit, tag, share, or control screenshot behavior?
Use the toolbar immediately after capture for quick edits, then adjust persistent behavior in the screenshot settings.

Quick edits and sharing
- Draw: Add arrows, handwriting, or other marks before sending the image.
- Crop: Trim browser chrome, blank margins, or unrelated conversation lines.
- Add tag: Apply a searchable tag while the screenshot is still open in the toolbar.
- Share: Send the file directly to a messaging, mail, storage, or editing app shown by the Android share sheet.
Turn the toolbar back on
If no controls appear after a capture, open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder and enable the screenshot-toolbar switch. The label can vary with One UI version, but it is in the Screenshots and screen recorder section.
Choose what the file contains
The S22 manual lists options to hide the status bar and navigation bar, delete a screenshot after it has been shared, and choose JPG or PNG format. These settings are useful when you are preparing images for documentation, support tickets, or publication:
- Hide status and navigation bars when interface details would distract from the content.
- Use the delete-after-sharing option if temporary captures should not remain in Gallery.
- Select JPG for smaller files when ordinary photographs or web images are sufficient; select PNG when you need lossless text or interface detail.
Because these options depend on the installed software, check the wording shown on your own S22 rather than relying on a different Galaxy model’s menu.
Where are screenshots saved on the Samsung Galaxy S22?
Open Gallery and choose the Screenshots album. The phone creates this album automatically when you capture the first image, according to the Galaxy S22 manual. New still screenshots and completed scrolling screenshots appear there unless you delete or move them.

- Select Screenshots.

If you used Share and enabled deletion after sharing, check whether the file was intentionally removed. A screenshot that was captured but immediately edited or shared may also be in the destination app rather than only in Gallery.
How do I screen-record video on a Galaxy S22?
Use Screen recorder when a still image cannot show the action you need. Samsung’s supported-device list includes the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra.
- Swipe down from the top of the display to open Quick settings. Swipe down again if the full panel is not visible.
- Tap Screen recorder.
- Choose the sound setting offered on your phone: no sound, media sounds, or media sounds plus microphone.
- Tap Start recording. A countdown gives you time to return to the content.
- Perform the actions you want to demonstrate.
- Use the recording control in the notification shade or floating control to stop.
The finished video is stored in Gallery. On supported software, Screen recorder can also show touch indicators and a front-camera overlay, which helps when you are making a tutorial or demonstrating where you tapped. Those controls may not appear on every software build.

Why can a screen recording be blocked?
Calls and apps that protect copyrighted or sensitive material can prevent recording, show a blank area, or disable the control. This is an intentional privacy or rights restriction rather than a fault with the S22. If recording works in Settings but not in a particular service, the app is the likely cause.

Which S22 capture method should I choose?
Choose based on whether you need a quick still, a hands-free gesture, a complete scrollable page, or a video demonstration.
| Method | Best use | Strength | Practical limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side + Volume Down | Everyday still images | Fast, dependable, and available without setup | Requires both physical keys to be pressed together |
| Palm swipe | Hands-free or one-handed still capture | Avoids the buttons after one-time setup | Must be enabled; gesture and app compatibility vary |
| Scroll capture | Long webpages, documents, and conversations | Includes content below the visible screen in one image | Appears only on scrollable surfaces; some apps block it |
| Screen recorder | Demonstrations, animated steps, and troubleshooting videos | Preserves motion and, where offered, audio and touch indicators | Calls or protected content may block recording |
For a normal still, start with the keys. Switch to Palm swipe when physical access is the problem, Scroll capture when hidden content matters, and Screen recorder when a single frame cannot convey the result.
Why is my Galaxy S22 screenshot not working?
Most failures have a specific cause. Check the symptom below before changing several settings at once.
The buttons open another control or do nothing
- Press Side and Volume Down simultaneously, then release immediately.
- Do not press one key first or hold both keys down.
- Remove a thick case that may prevent either key from moving.
- Try a standard Home or Settings screen to rule out an app restriction.
Palm swipe does nothing
- Confirm Palm swipe to capture is enabled under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Keep the edge of your hand touching the display for the entire swipe.
- Use a slower, flatter pass across the screen.
- Test another app, because some screens block screenshots.
Scroll capture is not offered
- Make sure the page can scroll farther down.
- Take a fresh normal screenshot and inspect the toolbar immediately.
- Try a different scrollable page to identify an app-specific restriction.
The toolbar is missing
Open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder and turn on the screenshot-toolbar option. A software update can change the exact label or location.
The phone says capture is unavailable
Privacy, security, and copyright protections can block still images or video. Banking, protected media, private-viewers, calls, and other restricted surfaces may intentionally refuse capture. There is no supported setting that should be used to bypass those protections; capture an allowed screen or ask the service for an export or sharing function.
What changes between S22 software versions and carriers?
The underlying shortcuts remain familiar, but One UI version, carrier customization, and the app in front of you can change labels, icon placement, and which options are exposed. For example, the toolbar may use a different icon for Scroll capture, and Screen recorder may offer a different set of sound choices.

When instructions do not match your display, search Settings for Screenshots, screen recorder, or Palm swipe rather than assuming a feature was removed. Samsung’s documentation also qualifies availability by model and software, so a menu shown for another Galaxy device is not a guarantee for every S22 build.
How can I make screenshot work a cleaner part of my workflow?
A short routine prevents clutter and makes captures easier to understand later.
- Frame the content first. Close pop-ups and move to the exact message, chart, or setting that matters.
- Use the button shortcut unless you specifically need a gesture, a long page, or video.
- Crop unrelated interface elements before sharing.
- Add a tag when the image belongs to an ongoing project or support case.
- For instructions, consider hiding status and navigation bars and adding a small drawn arrow rather than sending a full, unannotated screen.
- Review the Screenshots album periodically and enable delete-after-sharing when temporary captures should not accumulate.
These steps do not change what the phone can capture; they reduce the chance of sending the wrong screen or leaving sensitive temporary images in Gallery.

Can I capture a screenshot while the phone is locked?
Usually, the capture shortcut is intended for an unlocked screen that is displaying content. If the lock screen or a protected authentication view refuses capture, unlock the phone and use an ordinary, permitted screen instead.
Does a screenshot include notifications that arrive afterward?
No. A still image records the display at the moment you trigger it. A later notification appears only in a new capture or, if allowed, in a screen recording made while it arrives.
Will Scroll capture preserve interactive links and selectable text?
No. The result is an image, not a webpage or document file. Links, selection, and other interactive behavior are not retained, so keep the original page when those functions are needed.
