On a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, the dependable shortcut is simple: press the Side (Power) and Volume Down buttons together, then release. It works with the phone folded or unfolded, and a brief flash confirms the capture. For other situations, Samsung also provides palm-swipe gestures, voice commands, the Edge panel, S Pen Screen write and Scroll capture. Which option is best depends on whether you need speed, hands-free control, a long webpage, or annotations.
This guide covers the setup paths, compatibility limits, editing tools, storage locations and fixes for blocked screenshots. Menu names can differ by Fold generation, carrier and One UI version, so use the closest matching label on your device.
How do I take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy Fold?
Use the physical buttons unless you have a specific reason to choose another method. Display the content you want, press the Side/Power button and Volume Down at the same time, and release immediately. Holding the buttons too long can open the power menu or change the volume instead of taking the picture.
- Open the screen you want to preserve.
- Press Side/Power and Volume Down simultaneously.
- Release both buttons as soon as the screen flashes.
- Use the toolbar that appears to crop, draw, share or start a longer capture.
Samsung documents this shortcut for Galaxy devices and states that the Fold-specific procedure works when the phone is both folded and unfolded. The capture records the display that is currently active; if you need content from the other display, move that content there and capture again.

What if the buttons are difficult to press together?
Use palm swipe, a voice assistant, the Tasks Edge panel or an S Pen workflow instead. These alternatives avoid repeatedly squeezing the side buttons and can be more practical when the Fold is propped open.
Which screenshot method should I choose?
The following comparison puts each method against the decision that normally matters most: speed, setup, long content, hands-free use or annotation.
| Method | Best for | Setup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side/Power + Volume Down | Fast, dependable still images | None | Requires both buttons to be pressed cleanly |
| Palm swipe | Capturing without hardware buttons | Enable the gesture in Settings | Can be unreliable if the edge-of-hand motion is too light or the toggle is off |
| Bixby or Google Assistant | Hands-free capture | Assistant must be configured and able to hear you | Voice recognition and privacy settings can prevent the command |
| S Pen Screen write | Immediate markup and notes | Compatible Fold and S Pen | Support is model-specific |
| Tasks Edge panel | A one-tap on-screen shortcut | Add Take screenshot to Tasks | Requires Edge panel configuration |
| Scroll capture | Long webpages and extended documents | Take a normal screenshot first | Only appears when the app exposes a scrollable capture |
| AI select | Selecting, extracting or editing part of a screen | Supported device with One UI 7.0 or later | Availability varies by model and software |
How do I use palm swipe on the Fold?
Enable the gesture once, then move the edge of your hand across the display while keeping contact with the glass. It is useful when you cannot reach both buttons, but it requires a deliberate, flat edge-of-hand sweep.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Choose Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Palm swipe to capture.
- Place the side of your hand near one edge of the display and swipe all the way to the opposite edge.
If nothing happens, return to the same menu and verify that the switch is on. Keep your hand in contact with the screen for the entire movement; a fingertip tap or a swipe that starts in the middle is less likely to trigger it. A thick case, gloves or an app that intercepts gestures can also make the motion harder to perform.
Can I take a screenshot with Bixby or Google Assistant?
Yes. When the relevant assistant is configured, say a command such as “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot” or “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” This is the most convenient approach when your hands are occupied, but it depends on the assistant being enabled, unlocked as required and able to hear the request.

For reliable results, wake the assistant before speaking, wait for its listening indicator, and use the exact screenshot wording. In a noisy room or with microphone access restricted, the command may fail even though button capture still works.
How do I use an S Pen to capture and annotate?
On a compatible Galaxy Z Fold, S Pen Screen write captures the current display and opens drawing tools immediately. You can write or draw over the image, then save the finished result to Gallery.
Recommended Free Tools
- Remove or activate the compatible S Pen.
- Open Air command.
- Tap Screen write.
- Wait for the screenshot and use the pen, eraser, color and other available tools.
- Tap the save control to store the annotated image in Gallery.
Compatibility is generation-specific: not every Fold and not every S Pen supports the same features. Check the exact Fold model and its supported pen before buying an accessory or troubleshooting a missing Screen write command. On models that expose the command from the screenshot toolbar, you can also launch it there after a standard button capture.
How do I add a one-tap screenshot shortcut to the Edge panel?
The Tasks Edge panel can place Take screenshot beside other shortcuts. This is convenient after setup because it replaces the button combination with one tap. Samsung says a Tasks panel can contain up to twelve shortcuts.
- Open the Edge panel by swiping its handle.
- Tap the panel’s Settings gear.
- Select Tasks.
- Tap Edit.
- Add Take screenshot if it is not already listed.
- Return to the Edge panel and tap Take screenshot whenever you need a capture.
If Tasks is unavailable, open the Edge panel settings and add the Tasks panel first. Carrier software or a different One UI layout may place the gear or edit command in a slightly different location.

How do I capture an entire webpage or long document?
Use Scroll capture. It takes an ordinary screenshot, then adds content below the visible area while you continue the capture. It is intended for elongated material such as webpages, chats and documents, but an app can choose not to provide the feature.
The Tool Desk

- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture icon, usually shown as two downward arrows.
- Tap or hold the icon to extend the image by another screenful.
- Continue until the required content is included.
- Save, crop or share the resulting tall image.
The icon may not appear if the current app has no scrollable region or blocks extended capture. In that case, capture several ordinary images or use the app’s own export or share function.
What is AI select, and which Folds support it?
On supported devices running One UI 7.0 or later, Samsung’s AI select tool lets you draw a region around an image, video or text and then edit, save, share or extract text from that selection. You can reach it from the Edge panel, S Pen Air command or, on some devices, the screenshot toolbar.
Because AI select is tied to both hardware and software, its presence is not proof that every Fold generation supports it. Install the current software offered for your model, then check those entry points; if the command is absent, the device or carrier build may not support it.
Where are screenshots saved, and how do I edit them?
Open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots to review captures. You can also find image files through My Files > Images. Immediately after capture, the toolbar commonly offers drawing, cropping and sharing.

On Galaxy Z Fold software documented in Samsung’s manuals, screenshot settings can control whether the toolbar is shown, whether status and navigation bars are hidden, whether the original screenshot is preserved, whether files use JPG or PNG, and where they are saved. The exact switches depend on the Fold model and One UI release.
How should I mark up a screenshot?
- Use crop to remove unrelated edges before sharing.
- Use drawing tools to circle a control, add an arrow or redact a small detail.
- Save a clean original before heavy annotation when the toolbar offers that option.
- Share from Gallery after checking that sensitive notifications or account details are not visible.
Why does my Galaxy Fold say screenshots are not allowed?
A blocked screenshot is usually an app or security restriction, not a failed button. Samsung specifically identifies banking apps as an example of software that can prevent capture. Secure Folder, protected media and some provider-controlled screens can impose similar limits.
- Try capturing a normal home-screen or Settings page. If that works, the original app is restricting capture.
- Check whether the content is inside Secure Folder or another protected workspace.
- Install any available system update, because behavior can change with One UI versions.
- Do not attempt to bypass a banking or protected-content restriction; use the app’s supported statement, receipt or sharing function instead.
Restrictions vary by model, wireless provider, software version and app. A screenshot that works on the cover display may still be blocked for the same protected content on the inner display.

Choose Screen recorder instead of a still screenshot when the evidence is a sequence, animation, scrolling process or spoken explanation. Open Quick Settings, select Screen recorder, choose the sound option and start the recording. The Fold3 manual documents an optional countdown, on-screen drawing, a selfie-video overlay and automatic saving to Gallery’s Screen recordings album when you stop.

How do I troubleshoot a screenshot that did not save?
Start with a simple test on the home screen. If the flash and toolbar appear but no file is visible, check Gallery’s Screenshots album and My Files’ Images category, then verify that storage is not full.
- No flash or toolbar: release the buttons faster, test palm swipe, and check whether the current app blocks capture.
- Palm swipe fails: confirm the toggle under Advanced features, keep the hand edge touching the glass and make one deliberate side-to-side motion.
- Voice command fails: confirm the assistant is configured, the microphone can hear you and the phone is in a state where the assistant is allowed to respond.
- Scroll capture is missing: scroll the page first and retake the screenshot; the app may not expose a supported scrollable area.
- Screen write is missing: verify the Fold generation and S Pen compatibility, then open Air command again.
- Only one app fails: treat it as an app security policy rather than a hardware defect.
What is the safest routine for sharing a Fold screenshot?
Capture the smallest useful area, inspect the image at full size, and remove notifications, contact details, payment information and authentication codes before sending it. For a long page, stop Scroll capture as soon as the needed paragraph or transaction is visible; oversized images are harder to review and share. Keep an unedited original only when you need an audit trail, and use a marked-up copy for instructions or support requests.
For everyday use, the button shortcut is the quickest default. Palm swipe and Tasks are worthwhile when you want a physical-button alternative, voice capture is best when both hands are busy, Scroll capture handles long content, and S Pen Screen write or AI select adds focused annotation on compatible models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the file type of Galaxy Fold screenshots?
On supported Fold software, screenshot settings may let you choose JPG or PNG and select the save location. Open the screenshot-related options in Settings and look for format or save-location controls; labels differ by One UI release.
Why did my screenshot include the navigation bar or status icons?
The screenshot toolbar and Fold manuals expose options to hide status and navigation bars. If those controls are available on your model, enable them before the next capture; an existing image must be cropped manually.
Can I recover a screenshot I deleted after sharing it?
Check Gallery’s Trash or Recycle Bin if your Gallery version provides one, and check cloud or computer backups you configured. Without a retained copy or backup, a deleted image may not be recoverable.
Does every S Pen work with every Galaxy Z Fold?
No. S Pen features, including Screen write access and remote functions, depend on the specific Fold generation and pen model. Confirm compatibility for your exact device before purchasing or diagnosing a missing command.
