The Samsung Galaxy Book 12 is a 2017 Windows 10 detachable built around a 12-inch Super AMOLED display and a battery-free S Pen. It is most appealing as a portable screen for media, handwriting and pen input; whether it can replace a laptop depends on how comfortable you find its detachable keyboard, especially when working on your lap. Its original specifications and period reviews are useful context, but they do not establish current used-device prices, battery condition or software support.
What the Galaxy Book 12 is—and which configuration this review describes
The Galaxy Book 12 is a Windows 10 tablet that attaches to a keyboard cover, rather than a conventional laptop with a permanently fixed keyboard. Samsung sold configurations that varied by market: its product materials list both 4GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB/256GB options, as well as Wi-Fi and LTE versions. The detailed US enterprise specification describes one particular package: a 7th-generation dual-core Intel Core i5 processor rated at 3.1GHz, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, microSD support and two USB-C 3.1 ports. Those details should not be assumed to apply to every regional model. Samsung’s detailed US enterprise specifications identify that specific package.
Samsung’s US launch announcement described an S Pen and keyboard case in the bundle, and its enterprise package identified the Keyboard Case. Contemporary reviews also described the pen and folio keyboard as included in the reviewed kit. Bundle contents can depend on the offer and market, so a used unit may not include either accessory. Samsung’s launch materials and a 2017 HotHardware review document the original bundles they covered.
Display and S Pen: the clearest reasons to choose it
The 12-inch model has a 2160 × 1440 Super AMOLED display. That panel is its strongest documented distinction from the smaller 10.6-inch Galaxy Book, which Samsung specified with a TFT display. The 12-inch screen gives more room for documents, drawing and split-screen work, while the AMOLED panel is also a natural fit for watching video. Samsung’s launch announcement called it a Super AMOLED display with Full HD viewing; the detailed product specification gives the higher 2160 × 1440 resolution. Samsung’s specification page provides the resolution and panel details.

Samsung said the included S Pen has a 0.7mm tip, recognizes 4,096 pressure levels, responds to tilt for varying stroke thickness, and does not require a battery. These are manufacturer-stated features, not independent measurements of pen accuracy or latency. They make the pen a compelling part of the concept for handwritten notes and illustration, but real results also depend on the app, nib condition and individual preference. Samsung’s 2017 hands-on feature describes the tip, pressure and tilt claims; its Global Newsroom feature also states that the pen does not require a battery.
Ars Technica’s May 2017 review framed the 12-inch configuration as the more work-oriented choice compared with the smaller model, while questioning whether a detachable design makes a convincing laptop replacement. MobileTechReview likewise emphasized the AMOLED screen and pen experience. Those are contemporary reviewers’ impressions, not guarantees about every user’s drawing workflow or present-day condition. Ars Technica’s 2017 review and MobileTechReview’s review provide that period context.

Keyboard and laptop replacement: the main usability trade-off
The detachable keyboard is central to the buying decision. With the cover attached, the Galaxy Book can handle typing and pointing tasks in a compact setup; detach it and the tablet is easier to hold for reading, viewing or pen work. But a folio-style keyboard is not the same as a conventional laptop base. Desk stability, key feel, touchpad behavior and lap comfort are separate questions from how well the screen and pen work.
The cited period reviews discuss the device as a detachable rather than a standard clamshell laptop, but the available specifications do not quantify lap stability or provide a comparable keyboard-attached weight. Treat laptop replacement as conditional: it may suit lighter typing and tablet-first work, but someone who regularly types for long sessions or needs a consistently rigid lap setup should assess the actual cover before relying on it as their only computer. Do not infer the total carry weight from the tablet’s published weight alone.

Portability, ports and battery claims
Samsung lists the tablet itself at 754g and 291.3 × 199.8 × 7.4mm for the cited configurations. Those figures exclude the keyboard cover. Samsung’s materials vary on battery endurance: Mobile Press lists up to 10.5 hours, while US launch materials say up to 11 hours. Both are advertised maximum estimates, not independent runtime tests, and actual endurance depends on workload, configuration and battery age. Samsung Mobile Press specifications list the 10.5-hour estimate; Samsung’s US launch specifications give the 11-hour figure.
The detailed US enterprise specification lists two USB-C 3.1 ports and microSD support. Samsung’s product materials also identify LTE Cat.6 capability for applicable models, so cellular connectivity is not universal. For a used device, check the full model identifier and verify that the desired network and regional configuration match; the support page identifies SM-W728VQ as a Verizon Galaxy Book 12-inch model. Samsung’s Verizon model support page identifies that variant.

Should you buy a Galaxy Book 12 today?
It is a potentially attractive used-device choice for someone who specifically wants a lightweight Windows tablet with a large AMOLED screen and pen input, and who is comfortable with a detachable keyboard. It is a weaker choice if the purchase depends on a known all-day battery, modern performance expectations, or laptop-like lap stability: the cited material does not establish current battery health, current software-support status, or present-day performance against newer devices.
- Consider it if the 12-inch AMOLED display, Windows tablet format and S Pen are the features you value most.
- Be cautious if your work is dominated by long typing sessions or use on your lap; try the exact keyboard cover rather than assuming all folio keyboards behave alike.
- Check before paying the full model identifier, RAM and storage, Wi-Fi versus LTE, screen and pen condition, battery health, included accessories, and the current OS and software-support situation.
- Verify accessory fit before buying a replacement Samsung Galaxy Book 12 keyboard cover. Samsung’s support materials identify a specific Verizon model, but the available sources do not establish cover compatibility across all regional SKUs. Do not assume a keyboard for another Galaxy Book generation or Samsung tablet fits.
Launch-era prices describe 2017 offers, not what a used Galaxy Book 12 should cost now. The sources establish neither current second-hand pricing nor present availability, so judge any listing by its exact configuration, condition and included cover rather than by its original launch price.
