There is no single Samsung Cloud replacement that handles every kind of backup. For a Galaxy phone, choose separately how to protect photos and videos, broader phone data such as contacts and messages, and an independent local or computer copy. Google Gallery Cloud Sync, OneDrive Camera backup, Google Drive device backup, and Samsung Smart Switch each do a different job.
Choose an alternative based on what you need to recover
| Option | Best for | How it works | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Gallery Cloud Sync | Selected Samsung Gallery photos and videos | Syncs selected Gallery media and folders with a personal Google Account. | Linked sync: deleting a synced item in either app also removes it from the other app and cloud storage. |
| Google Photos backup | A Google Photos library and its photo features | Backs up media through the Google Photos app. | It is separate from Gallery Cloud Sync; decide which workflow you want rather than assuming one enables the other. |
| OneDrive Camera backup | New camera photos and videos in Microsoft storage | Uploads from the OneDrive app after Camera backup is enabled. | Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended September 30, 2026. |
| Google Drive device backup | Selected phone data for setup-time restore | Backs up categories such as apps, SMS/MMS, call history, settings, and photos/videos to a Google Account. | Restore is intended for initial device setup; retention and Android-version limits apply. |
| Smart Switch to SD card, USB storage, or PC | A local copy or transfer to another Galaxy | Creates a backup using compatible storage or a computer, or transfers data to another device. | It is not ongoing cloud sync, and storage compatibility varies by phone. |
Samsung Cloud remains available for Samsung-account syncing and device backup or restore where supported. Samsung lists items such as contacts, calendar, calls and messages, settings, apps, Home screen layout, and voice recordings, but available categories vary by model and software. Its service page describes a temporary backup period of up to 30 days; that is not a promise of permanent storage. See Samsung Cloud’s service overview and Samsung’s Gallery sync information.
Keep Samsung Gallery photos backed up after OneDrive sync ended
Microsoft says direct Samsung Gallery-to-OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026. Existing photos and videos stored in OneDrive remain available in OneDrive apps and on the web, but the old direct Gallery connection is no longer the way to upload new images. To continue uploads to Microsoft storage, use OneDrive Camera backup instead. Microsoft’s instructions are in Changes to Samsung Gallery sync and OneDrive.
Set up OneDrive Camera backup
- Open the OneDrive app and sign in to the Microsoft account where you want the photos stored.
- Open OneDrive settings and choose Camera backup. Confirm that the selected account is the one you intend to use.
- Turn Camera backup on and grant OneDrive permission to access photos and videos when prompted.
- Check the OneDrive account’s available storage and confirm that uploads appear in OneDrive.
This is a OneDrive app workflow, not a continuation of the former Samsung Gallery integration. If your goal is to see media inside Samsung Gallery as a directly synced library, do not assume Camera backup restores that behavior.

Use Google Gallery Cloud Sync for selected photos and folders
On eligible devices, Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync can sync photos and videos to a Google Account, including selected device folders such as Downloads or Screenshots. Google states that it requires a compatible Samsung device, Android 13 or higher, and a personal Google Account. Google Workspace and supervised accounts are excluded, and availability can vary by model, region, and account type. Media uses Google Account storage and is stored in original quality. See Google Photos Help: Sync your Samsung Gallery with your Google Account.
Understand the deletion and feature trade-offs
- It is linked sync, not an independent archive. Delete a synced item from Samsung Gallery or Google Photos and it is removed from both apps and cloud storage. Keep a separate copy if you need protection from accidental deletion.
- Gallery sync does not automatically enable Google Photos backup. Google says Samsung-synced items can be viewed and shared, but features including Memories, Live albums, and Search are not available for those items unless you also back them up through Google Photos.
- Edits can create a different result from ordinary Google Photos backup. A Samsung Gallery edit may appear as an additional version in Google Photos.
- Storage comes from your Google Account. Check current account capacity and plan terms rather than assuming a particular allowance.
Use Gallery Cloud Sync when you want selected Gallery folders connected to your Google Account and understand that deletions propagate. Use Google Photos backup when you want the Google Photos app’s own backed-up library and features. You can use both, but make the distinction deliberately to avoid confusing copies and deletion behavior.

Back up contacts and other Galaxy data with Google Drive
Samsung’s Google Drive backup guidance lists apps, photos and videos, SMS/MMS, call history, device settings, and Google Account data. It is broader than photo-library sync, but it is not a general-purpose file archive. Samsung says automatic backups require Wi-Fi, charging, and at least two hours of device inactivity; backups use Google Account storage. The guide says backup data is deleted after 57 consecutive days without device use, except items backed up to Google Photos. Restore takes place during initial setup, and a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older Android version. See Samsung’s Google Drive backup guide and backup and restore overview.
Start a Google backup from Galaxy settings
- Open Settings and look for Accounts and backup.
- Choose the Google or Google Drive backup option shown on your phone, then select the Google Account to use.
- Review the categories available on your device and start a backup. Exact labels and available categories can vary by model, region, and software version.
- For automatic backup, leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi and charging, and allow it to remain unused for at least two hours.
Do not treat this as a substitute for separately protecting folders or files that are not among the categories offered on your device. Check the backup screen and confirm the data you care about is included.

Make a local Smart Switch backup to storage or a PC
Smart Switch can back up and restore data using SD-card or USB storage, and Samsung also documents PC backups. It is useful when you want a copy outside a cloud account or need to move data to another Galaxy. Samsung’s instructions do not establish that every Galaxy supports every storage method. Some phones have no microSD slot and require compatible USB storage and an adapter; check the exact model and port before buying anything. Follow Samsung’s Smart Switch backup and transfer instructions.
Choose the right Smart Switch use
- SD card or USB storage: appropriate for a local backup if your phone supports the storage and connection method.
- PC: appropriate for a computer-held copy using Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions.
- Phone-to-phone transfer: useful for moving data to a new Galaxy, but a migration is not a recurring backup plan.
Samsung describes Smart Switch as a transfer utility for contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings, and more, while noting that features vary by device and software. Its transfer announcement does not make Smart Switch an automatic cloud backup service. See Samsung’s Smart Switch announcement.

A practical backup plan for a Galaxy phone
- Protect camera photos. Pick Google Gallery Cloud Sync, Google Photos backup, or OneDrive Camera backup based on the library and app behavior you want. Check that uploads complete.
- Protect phone data. Enable Google Drive device backup or the Samsung Cloud categories your device supports, and verify the categories include the information you need.
- Keep an independent copy for important files. Use Smart Switch to compatible local storage or a PC. A second copy helps if a synced deletion removes a cloud item.
- Test recovery before relying on it. Confirm you can access cloud photos in the corresponding service, locate the local or PC backup, and understand when device restore is offered.
Menu names, supported data, and service availability differ across Galaxy models, software versions, regions, and account types. Check the options shown on your own device rather than assuming every Galaxy exposes the same backup categories.
