Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: At First Glance

Samsung has gained popularity and becomes more reliable in the TV market due to the fact that it manufactures great-performing televisions. Although most of its televisions are pretty expensive, they offer adequate performance and features that match their price tags.

For example, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV – was released in 2019. This television is quite pricey, costing around $1,089 when I published this review article in April 2022.

However, it comes with excellent performance and numerous amazing features such as HDR, an attractive design, and a low input lag. Nevertheless, does the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV have enough features to compete with other televisions in its class?

Kindly read on to find out!

Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: Design, Dimension, and Weight

Samsung TVs are well known for having good designs, and the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV isn’t an exception. To give more details, the television features extremely thin bezels that frame its 58-inch display screen.

Furthermore, these bezels are entirely composed of plastic and have a matte-black finish. However, the bottom bezel seems to be significantly thicker than the others because it features a black “SAMSUNG” logo at its center.

Nonetheless, this logo adds beauty to the overall design of the television and also serves as a means of brand identification. Having said all that, let us discuss the back of the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV.

To start with, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV comes with a plain plastic back panel. This back panel has a black etched horizontal textured finish that is quite appealing and pleasing to the eyes.

Furthermore, there are four holes at the center of the television’s back panel. These holes are to accommodate a 200 x 200 VESA mount for mounting the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV on the wall.

Moreover, just like the bezels, the television’s back panel is very thin. Therefore, when wall-mounted, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV should not stick out of the wall or look awkward.

Still on the TV’s back panel, there exist three cuts/channels at the bottom part that serve as a cable management system. Besides, you’ll find clips on the back of the TV’s legs which also serve as a cable management system.

Speaking of the legs, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV comes with pair of V-shaped plastic legs with a dark-gray finish. Regrettably, these legs are situated very close to the edges of this 58-inch TV.

Thus, a fairly-large table would be required to place the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV if not wall-mounted. Nevertheless, although made of plastic, these legs are very sturdy and offer enough support for the TV to stand firm with minimal wobble.

For dimension and weight, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV measures 1300.4 x 58.4 x 756.9 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 20184.8 g. Compared with one of its closest competitors (Hisense 58H6550E), this TV is about 5000 g heavier.

Precisely, the Hisense 58H6550E weighs just 15013.9 g and measures 1300.4 x 73.6 x 764.5 mm (W x D x H).

In conclusion, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV comes with an attractive design, as one would expect from a $1000+ TV. However, this TV is far heavier than most of its 58-inch competitors.

Nevertheless, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this design review section.

Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: Display Features and Picture Quality

As its name entails, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV features a 58-inch LED display. This television’s display has a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution that allows it to deliver clear and vivid picture quality.

In fact, as a 4K UHD display, this TV’s display should offer far clearer and better picture quality than a standard HD display. This is because 4K UHD resolution has about 4 times the amount of pixels of an HD resolution.

Asides from its 4K UHD resolution, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display also comes with an impressive contrast ratio. Specifically, the display has a high contrast ratio of 5650:1.

Moreover, the reason behind the display’s high contrast ratio is due to the fact that it is made with a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel. Well, the result of the high contrast ratio is that the display will be able to produce deep blacks.

Therefore, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV should be ideal for watching movies or TV series with lots of dark/shadowy scenes. Also, the television will be adequate for dark room viewing.

By the way, contrast ratio refers to the difference between the brightest shade and the darkest shade of a display.

Moving on, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display doesn’t support local dimming, probably because it has a high contrast ratio. In brief, local dimming is a technology that enhances the contrast ratio and black level of a display by dimming backlight zones.

Basically, with this feature, blacks rendered by the display will look deeper than they would without local dimming. However, as mentioned earlier, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display doesn’t support local dimming.

Although the lack of local dimming isn’t a major flaw, it would have been a great plus to the display’s features. Nevertheless, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display made up for not supporting local dimming by supporting HDR (High Dynamic Range).

To be more specific, the display supports various HDR effects, which are HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma). For the record, HDR is a picture technology that increases a display’s brightness, color accuracy, and color production.

Therefore, when watching HDR-supported content on the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV, pictures are going to look really realistic, colorful, and natural. Just in case you’re wondering, you can find HDR-supported content on streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

Unfortunately, despite supporting multiple HDR effects, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display has a mediocre max brightness. Precisely, the display has a maximum brightness of 278 nits.

Thus, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV might not be the best television to use in well-lit or bright rooms. Nevertheless, the display’s brightness is enough for you to enjoy using the television in moderately-lit rooms.

As stated earlier, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display is made with a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel. A major flaw of VA panel displays is the bad viewing angles they tend to offer.

Thus, I wasn’t surprised when I found out that the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display has poor viewing angles. Hence, pictures and colors will rapidly lose quality and accuracy when you watch the TV from an extreme angle or off-center.

Therefore, to get an ideal viewing experience, I suggest you watch this Samsung TV directly from the center. On the bright side, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display handles reflection decently.

This can be credited to the semi-gloss coating on the display’s surface that retract reflection and sun glares. As a result, using the television in bright or sunny areas should be less bothersome.

That said, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display offers an impressively low input lag of 10.8 milliseconds. For clarity, input lag is the duration a display takes to register signal inputs from external sources such as a wireless gamepad.

Furthermore, the display’s input lag is a vital factor that determines the gaming performance and capability of a TV. Essentially, the display is required to have an input lag of 15 ms or less before a TV can be considered good for gaming.

Obviously, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s display is way less than 15 ms. Hence, the television should be ideal for gaming.

In addition to its low input lag, this television’s display also offers a fast response time of 19.5 milliseconds. Therefore, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV is good for watching fast-moving content as there will be minimal blur trails.

Briefly, response time refers to the duration a display takes to change from one color to another.

In conclusion, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV offers a great display performance which I believe will meet most users’ demands. However, the TV’s display disappoints in some major areas.

For example, the display has poor maximum brightness and bad viewing angles. Thus, I will be rating the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV an eight out of ten in this display features review section.

Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: Sound Features

For the sound department, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV comes with a pair of 2 CH 20-watt speakers. These speakers produce great sound quality and are loud enough to fill a large-sized room.

However, this Samsung television lacks a subwoofer. Hence, the speakers all by themselves won’t be able to produce an adequate amount of bass.

As a result, users won’t get to enjoy the thumping and rumbling sound in movies/music on this TV. Also, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV won’t be ideal for watching bass-heavy movies.

Nevertheless, you can still get adequate bass production by purchasing a soundbar alongside the TV. Apparently, that would attract an additional cost.

To add to the woes, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV offers a disappointing distortion performance. This was proven by its result on a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test.

For your information, the THD test is a sound assessment that evaluates the amount of distortion a sound device can produce. Moreover, a score of 1% or less on the THD test indicates that the sound device produces minimal distortion.

On the contrary, a score above 1% means that the sound device is capable of producing a high level of distortion. Disappointingly, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV delivered a score of 1.4% on the THD test.

Therefore, at the maximum volume level, the distortion that this television’s speakers will produce will be very noticeable. However, the distortion might reduce and be less disturbing when the television is set to a moderate volume level.

If you don’t know, distortion is the alteration of original audio frequencies, leading to a sound device delivering unpleasant sound quality.

On a positive note, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV features a sound technology called Dolby Audio. This sound technology enhances the performance of the television’s speakers, enabling them to produce immersive and cinematic audio quality.

Besides, Dolby Audio also helps the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV’s speakers to deliver loud and comprehensive dialogue. For context, dialogue is the conversation between multiple characters in a movie.

All things considered, I will rate the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV a seven out of ten in this sound features review section.

Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: Ports and Connectivity Features

Port-wise, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV features a reasonable amount of ports. However, accessing the ports whenever the television is mounted on the wall might prove to be difficult.

This is because they are situated in compartments on the television’s back panel. Although still not easy to access, some of the ports are right-facing while the others are directly on the TV’s back.

Focusing on the right-facing ports, they include three HDMI ports with one that supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). Therefore, the ARC-supported HDMI port should enable users to easily connect a soundbar to the TV.

In addition to these HDMI ports, there are also two USB ports and an RF connector among the right-facing ports. Meanwhile, among the ports directly on the TV’s back, you’ll find a digital audio output, composite video input, and an Ethernet port.

For wireless connectivity, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV features a built-in 802.11 Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth. Another form of connectivity that this TV offer is the TM1240A remote control.

Design-wise, this remote is made entirely out of plastic and has a matte-black finish. Furthermore, the remote control is pretty lengthy in size and features plenty of rubber buttons.

A few of these buttons are a full number pad and a plus-shaped directional button. Also, the remote has three dedicated buttons for quick access to Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.

Moreover, there is a white “SAMSUNG” logo at the bottom part of the remote control for brand identification. Unfortunately, the TM1240A remote does not feature a built-in microphone for voice input.

In a nutshell, the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV comes with a sufficient amount of ports that are not easy to access. Also, the television’s remote control doesn’t support voice input as it lacks a built-in mic.

All things considered, I will rate the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV an eight out of ten in the ports and connectivity review section.

Samsung 58 4K Smart TV: Smart Features

In 2015, Samsung created an exclusive operating system called the Tizen OS. Ever since then, most Samsung smart televisions makes use of this OS, and the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV isn’t an exception.

The Tizen OS has a smooth and user-friendly interface known as Smart Hub. This interface has a straightforward and easy navigation system that makes navigating seamless.

Moreover, the Tizen OS comes loaded with numerous pre-installed apps and streaming services. To mention a few, you’ll find streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ on the OS.

In case these pre-installed apps and streaming services aren’t enough for you, the Tizen OS has a built-in apps store called the Samsung Store. Through this built-in apps store, users can download more streaming services and applications of their choice.

Besides, you can as well stream or share content from your smart devices to the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV. For you to do that, you’ll have to first download the SmartThings app on your smart device.

After that, you must ensure that the television and smart device are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Impressively, the SmartThings app is available and free for download on App Store and Google Play Store.

All in all, I will rate the Samsung 58 4K Smart TV a nine out of ten in this smart features review section.
