A four-player Salmon Run crew works best when the room, voice channel and jobs are organized before the host presses Ready. Salmon Run supports a maximum of four players; each person needs their own Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 and copy of Splatoon 3. The game itself has no in-match voice channel, so use the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app with SplatNet 3, or a separate call such as Discord, before matchmaking. During waves, keep spoken calls to three parts—boss, location, action—while continuing to use the D-pad “Help!” and “This way!” signals. Lure most bosses to the basket, remove Flyfish and Stingers quickly, and spend specials to prevent a wipe rather than saving them for a wave that is already collapsing.
What do you need before creating a Salmon Run room?
Every player needs a console, a copy of Splatoon 3, and an internet connection for online play. Nintendo Support says split-screen is unavailable and that a maximum of four players can join one Salmon Run game. Online Salmon Run requires Nintendo Switch Online; local wireless and LAN play are also supported with the same four-player limit.
- Finish the introductory Turf War, reach level 2, open the lobby terminal and create a Splashtag before expecting friends to appear in the online lobby. IGN also advises setting your Switch profile’s online visibility to All Friends or Best Friends.
- Add the other players as Switch friends if you want the simplest room-invite flow.
- Decide whether the session is for paid Freelance shifts, practice in Private Job, or a special event such as Big Run or Eggstra Work.
- Start the voice call before anyone queues. Confirm that every speaker or listener can hear and that phone microphone permissions are enabled.
For local wireless, use The Shoal instead of the online lobby. Player 1 creates the Salmon Run room, can set a four-digit PIN, selects Crew set!, and waits for everyone to press Ready.

It has voice chat through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, but not through a voice channel inside the game. Nintendo’s official Splatoon site says SplatNet 3 is available to Nintendo Switch Online members on Android and iOS, and that a Nintendo Account age of 13 or older is required for app features including voice chat. A headset plugged into the Switch does not make your teammates’ voices appear in the game.

Set up the official Nintendo path
- Install the Nintendo Switch Online app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Sign in with the same Nintendo Account linked to the Switch profile running Splatoon 3.
- Open the Splatoon 3 icon in the app to enter SplatNet 3.
- Use the SplatNet 3 friend or recent-player functions to invite the people in your crew and start the call.
The app also provides Salmon Run schedules, current and next-day stages, shift weapons and records from the previous 50 jobs. Use that schedule screen in your briefing so everyone knows the weapon pool before entering the room.
Use Discord or another call instead
Discord is a common choice for fixed crews, including Japanese recruiting posts in 2026. Skype and FaceTime are also practical alternatives. These services are unofficial, so arrange the call separately and keep the game room on the Switch. If you use a phone for voice, game audio remains on the console; Bluetooth earbuds connected to the phone normally hear teammates but not the Switch’s game sound. A mixer-style headset can combine both sources in one pair of ears.
SplatNet 3 can generate a shareable room URL for people who are not Switch friends, but its room-creation feature cannot use voice chat and closes automatically after 30 minutes. Use a separate voice service when recruiting through that link.

The host can open either a reward-earning Freelance room or a no-reward Private Job from Grizzco. The menu path is the same until you choose the job type.
- From Splatsville Main Square, press X and select Grizzco on the map.
- Press L to open the Match Menu.
- Move the group setting from Solo to With Friends.
- Select Freelance for a paid shift with random weapons from the current four-weapon pool, or Private Job for practice. Press Y to create the room.
- Have the other players follow the same path, choose With Friends and select the host’s room.
- Only after all four microphones are checked should everyone press Ready. The system starts searching when the room is ready and begins the job after the crew is assembled.
Freelance is the option that awards pay and rewards. Private Job is a practice sandbox: the host chooses the stage and difficulty, and each player can choose a weapon before the match; that weapon remains for every wave. Private Jobs do not provide rewards or experience. With two or three players, the egg quota scales down, but enemies still spawn at the selected difficulty as if four players were present.
Event and tournament cautions
For Big Run or Eggstra Work, every player must select the event option rather than the normal Salmon Run shift. In tournament rooms, a team of three or fewer can be matched with outside players after everyone is ready. If disconnects occur, keep at least one tournament member connected until the result is recorded; when everyone disconnects, the shift is treated as a Wave 1 failure with no Golden Eggs or scales.
Which voice setup should a crew choose?
| Voice path | What it requires | What players hear | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online app / SplatNet 3 | Android or iOS app, matching Nintendo Account, active Nintendo Switch Online membership, age 13+ for app voice features | Phone microphone and speaker; game audio remains on the Switch | Official Nintendo route and crews that want SplatNet schedules and records |
| Discord | Separate Discord accounts, a shared server or call, and a phone or other voice device | Teammate audio through the Discord device; Switch game audio remains separate unless mixed | Fixed groups, recruiting servers and high-rank sessions |
| FaceTime or Skype | Accounts and a call established before queuing | Teammate audio through the call device | Small private groups that already use the service |
| Mute plus D-pad pings | No voice service; all players use Up, Down and Help signals | On-screen “This way!”, “Booyah!” and “Help!” messages | Listen-only players, accessibility needs or crews that prefer no call |
Voice is a coordination aid, not an automatic win. Andrew Ross of Massively Overpowered notes that it helps particularly in high-end play, while still recommending pings to keep information visible and the voice line clear.

What should the crew say in a 60-second pre-wave briefing?
Use the lobby or weapon-reveal countdown to make six decisions. A short briefing prevents four players from improvising four different plans once the first bosses land.

- Read the weapons aloud. Assign work from the kits actually dealt, not from a preferred role. A charger or stringer can take distant Stingers and Steelhead balloons; a roller can clear Lesser Salmonids and paint routes; a mobile shooter can deliver eggs and cover revives.
- Choose three map words. Agree on landmarks such as basket, left ramp, right shore, wall, grate or low-tide sand. “Flyfish right” is useful only if everyone names the same right.
- Name the shore threats. Stingers, Flyfish, Big Shots and Fish Sticks should not be dragged inland unnecessarily. Assign who will peel off to deal with each one.
- Set the lure rule. Other shore-spawning bosses can usually be brought near the basket. Agree that players will lure before killing unless the boss is a non-lurable shore threat or the map is already unsafe.
- Set the special trigger. Use a special when two players are down, the basket is being overrun, the crew is split from its escape routes, or the team is losing control—not only in the final seconds of Wave 3.
- Set the downed-player rule. The eliminated player says “down, [landmark]” and repeatedly presses Up for “Help!” until revived. Voice and the on-screen ping together are easier to locate than either signal alone.
Ink vertical walls during the preparation window. A painted wall is an escape route, a shortcut to the basket and a safer revive path when the floor is covered.
What is the shortest useful Salmon Run callout?
Use the formula boss, side or landmark, action. Remove greetings, explanations and weapon history once the shift begins.
- “Stinger left, peeling.” The assigned player is moving to the tower; another can cover the route.
- “Flyfish right, bombing left bin.” Call the wing you already opened so a teammate can finish the other basket. In the usual targeting pattern, the right bin targets the closest player, while the left is random from the player’s view.
- “Big Shot shore, cannon.” Someone is using the cannon to launch eggs closer to the basket.
- “Fish Stick up.” Ink the pillar and leave the remaining platform as high ground when useful.
- “Steelhead balloon.” A charger, stringer or another suitable weapon should pop the bomb over its head.
- “Steel Eel tail, luring.” One player kites the eel while another attacks the driver from behind.
- “Maws, bomb buoy.” Place the bomb where the Maws marker is about to surface.
- “Scrapper back.” Attack from behind instead of wasting shots on its shield.
- “Slammin’ Lid, bait slam.” Place the landing circle so its slam can damage other bosses, then squid-roll out.
- “Eggs left, I throw.” The speaker is carrying eggs toward the basket; ask for a midpoint pass on long Tornado routes.
- “Down, behind basket, Help pinging.” The defeated player gives a precise revive location and keeps the signal active.
- “Two down, specials now.” This is an instruction to stabilize, not a request to wait for a better wave.
- “Stay basket, lure it in.” Do not chase a lurable boss to the shore.
- “Quota is in, don’t chase.” Once the quota is met, a distant egg is not worth a wipe.
Keep pings running even while on voice. Up sends “This way!” or “Help!” depending on context, and Down sends “Booyah!” after a revive or successful play. If you are dead behind cover, repeated Help pings reveal your position to living players.
How should four players divide jobs?
Use weapon-driven jobs rather than permanently assigning one person as “the boss killer.” Freelance weapons change every shift, so assign responsibilities after the reveal.
Shore-threat killer
This player watches for Flyfish, Stingers, Big Shots and Fish Sticks. Chargers, stringers and weapons with strong range can remove distant threats; an Explosher can destroy Flyfish baskets with its main weapon instead of bombs. A shore-threat killer should announce the target before leaving the basket and return as soon as the threat is handled.
Basket and crowd control
The crowd-control player keeps Lesser Salmonids from painting the basket, protects the egg runner and manages lurable bosses near the goal. Rollers are valuable for floor clearing and path ink, while weapons with reliable spread or burst damage can keep a crowded basket from becoming impassable.
Egg runner and thrower
The runner collects nearby eggs, throws when the basket is visible and asks for a midpoint pass on long routes. Throwing a Golden Egg consumes ink but deals 100 damage to nearby enemies, so do not throw blindly when the ink tank is needed for escape. In Giant Tornado, put one thrower at the cage, an optional passer in the middle and runners on the inland route; swimming all the way with every egg is slower and riskier.

Special and revive insurance
The insurance player watches the team state, calls when to stagger specials and prioritizes revives. Specials are limited, but arriving at the Xtrawave provides a fresh special, so spending one in Wave 1 or Wave 2 to prevent a wipe is not automatically wasteful. Say “I have Booyah Bomb” or “Wave Breaker ready” so three players do not activate simultaneously after control has already been restored.

These jobs overlap. A player who sees a Flyfish should call it even if another person owns shore threats, and anyone carrying an egg should stop to revive a teammate when the route is otherwise unsafe.
What should you do with ordinary bosses?
Most shore-spawning bosses can be lured close to the basket. This concentrates eggs, shortens revive paths and keeps the crew together. Stingers, Flyfish, Big Shots and Fish Sticks are the main exceptions because they anchor pressure at the shore or remain dangerous when dragged inland.
- Steelhead: Call “balloon” and pop the bomb before it fires. Do not let a charger or stringer leave a safe lane without telling the team.
- Steel Eel: The driver is vulnerable from the rear. One player lures; another attacks the tail-side driver.
- Maws: Drop a bomb on the buoy marker, then collect the egg only when the route is safe.
- Scrapper: Turn it or attack from behind. A front-facing shield wastes time and ink.
- Slammin’ Lid: Bait the slam onto nearby bosses when possible, then escape the impact circle. A well-placed slam can eliminate other bosses.
- Drizzler and Flipper-Flopper: Keep them near the basket, but call when their projectiles or landing zones threaten the egg route.
The goal is not to collect every egg on the map. Once the quota is secure, staying alive and protecting the basket is worth more than a dangerous shore trip.

Glowflies (Rush)
Group at one basket chokepoint and shoot the incoming rush. Do not make a wall camp your default: when the glowfly target changes or that player falls, the wall position can collapse. Grab Goldie eggs only when they are very close. Wave Breaker is especially useful for stabilizing the choke, and the crew should deposit before the timer expires.
Grillers
The player marked by the red laser kites through an inked wall gap while the other three shoot the pink tail. Each Griller drops five Golden Eggs, but Smallfry escorts can still cause a wipe after the tail is exposed. Keep clearing the Smallfry and do not let the Griller walk into a stacked clump.
Cohock Charge
At low tide, use the cannons on the sand. Chargers, Splatlings and other lower-output kits are often better placed in cannons; swim in with ZL, fire with ZR, leave to refill ink and return before the cannon position is surrounded.
Goldie Seeking
At night, open gushers methodically. The brightest active gusher hides the Goldie; wrong gushers release lesser Salmonids. Strike the Goldie as it runs and bring the eggs back before the timer closes the route.
Mothership
There are no Boss Salmonids in this event. Shoot Chinooks for one Golden Egg each, and when the ship begins sucking the basket, have everyone fire on the ship rather than wandering after stray eggs.

Mudmouths
Bomb the mouth to make eggs appear. A Golden Mudmouth pays more, so call its location before the crowd-control player leaves the basket.
Giant Tornado
Eggs appear in a low-tide cage while the basket remains inland. Build a throw chain: cage runner to midpoint passer to basket thrower. A Golden Egg throw costs about as much ink as a bomb, so rotate throwers through refill positions instead of forcing one player to carry every egg.
Fog
Reduced visibility makes the tide overlay and landmark vocabulary more important. A Goldie may appear, but no one should swim into high-tide water simply because a callout sounds close.
After three successful 100-second waves, a full Salmometer on at least one player can trigger an Xtrawave. Players receive Egg Cannons; regular shots damage the King, while Golden Eggs deal much more damage. The Xtrawave does not have to be cleared for the job to count as a win, and even a failed King attempt still awards scales without lowering the pay grade. Golden Eggs also delete priority threats: an open Flyfish basket, a Steelhead during its balloon, a Drizzler, a rear-facing Scrapper, a Maws, a Flipper-Flopper or a Slammin’ Lid. Do not reserve every egg for Cohozuna. The player drawing the King’s attention should kite roughly half a bomb-throw away so its belly charge misses and its leap does not scatter the crew. Later King Salmonids exist in the live game, but the documented tactics here cover Cohozuna specifically; apply the same communication rule—announce the target and the action—rather than assuming every King behaves identically. Use a special before the basket is painted over and three players are down. The practical triggers are two teammates eliminated, several bosses stacked at the basket, the crew separated from one another, or a shore threat that ordinary weapons cannot safely reach. Salmon Run’s standard job is three 100-second waves. The quota is filled by depositing Golden Eggs at the basket, and at least one player must be alive at 0:00 for a normal win. Write the social contract in the recruiting post before anyone joins. Japanese posts commonly use 通話あり(Discord) for voice required, 聞き専OK for listen-only players and 無言OK for no voice. State the current rank band, the night’s goal and the talk policy together. Discord community servers often have dedicated Salmon Run recruiting channels. Once the group is assembled, create the voice call first, confirm four mics, then have the host press Y in Grizzco. Troubleshooting audio after matchmaking starts wastes the first wave. Check the connection in this order rather than changing several settings at once. Keep the D-pad protocol active during every troubleshooting fallback. A mute player who pings a precise location is more useful than a talker whose microphone cuts out without warning. At the start, paint the escape walls, identify the basket and send the shore-threat player only when a threat appears. Everyone else holds near the basket and lures ordinary bosses inward. The egg runner announces each delivery, while the insurance player watches the down counter and calls a special before the floor becomes unpainted. When the quota is nearly complete, stop treating every distant egg as mandatory. Call “quota in” and regroup. A living four-player crew with a clear basket is in a better position for the next wave than a split team chasing one egg at the shoreline. The plan follows the game’s four-player cap, its actual Grizzco room choices, the phone-based official voice path and the constraints of a changing weapon pool. It prioritizes calls that change a teammate’s next action, keeps D-pad pings as a redundant channel, and assigns work by weapon capability rather than by a fixed character class. Hazard guidance is organized around the events and bosses documented for Salmon Run, with Cohozuna-specific Xtrawave advice labeled separately from later King Salmonid content. Nintendo states that an account age of 13 or older is required for app features including voice chat. A younger player can still coordinate through the game’s D-pad signals or join a separate family-approved communication method that does not depend on the app’s voice feature. The Tool Desk No. Nintendo Support requires each player to have their own Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and their own copy of the game; split-screen multiplayer is not available. Local wireless and LAN sessions still use one console and one copy per player. No. Private Job lets the host choose the stage and difficulty and lets players keep selected weapons through the waves, but it is practice and does not award pay or experience. Choose Freelance when the crew wants normal rewards. The SplatNet 3 Salmon Run record tracks the previous 50 jobs, including wave information, Boss Salmonids and eliminations. Reviewing those records can reveal whether the crew repeatedly loses to shore pressure, revives or egg routes. Nintendo Tournament Manager treats a room in which every tournament member disconnects as a Wave 1 failure with no Golden Eggs or scales. Keeping one tournament member connected through the result preserves the recorded outcome for the team.
