Short answer: the Ryobi RLT254SDSO is a capable, large-yard petrol line trimmer if you want the long runtime and attachment flexibility of a 25.4cc two-stroke engine. Its straight shaft, harness and split-shaft Expand-It compatibility are useful for extended work. The trade-offs are significant handheld weight, 50:1 fuel mixing, vibration and the maintenance associated with a petrol engine. Published specifications also vary: cutting width is listed as 430 mm or 457 mm, power as 0.75 kW or 0.85 kW, and weight as 5.8 kg or 6.2 kg depending on the source and measurement method.
This review explains those differences, identifies the right fuel and line, describes setup and maintenance, and separates documented specifications from individual owner reports. It is most relevant to Australian buyers, because the cited price and warranty information come from Australian listings and the model is now described as discontinued in comparison data.
What is the Ryobi RLT254SDSO?
The RLT254SDSO is a petrol, air-cooled, two-stroke line trimmer with a straight shaft, a 25.4cc full-crank engine and a split-shaft design. Ryobi positions it for large yards rather than occasional edging around a small suburban lawn. The split shaft is also part of Ryobi’s Expand-It system, so the powerhead can accept compatible attachments instead of being limited to string trimming.
The kit is supplied with two cutting-head arrangements: a Speedwinder bump-feed head intended for 2.4 mm line and a Pro Cut II head that the product sheet says supports 2.7 mm line. That distinction matters: line diameter should match the head being used, not simply whichever line is easiest to find.

CHOICE lists the trimmer at AUD $298 and categorises it as a large-yard model. That is a recorded Australian comparison price accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed current retail price. Stock, parts and warranty handling may be different now because comparison data identifies the petrol model as discontinued.
Is the Ryobi RLT254SDSO any good?
It is a reasonable choice for owners who value petrol runtime, a wide swath and attachment compatibility more than minimum weight or low maintenance. The 25.4cc engine and straight shaft are appropriate for long sessions and heavier grass than a small cordless trimmer is normally intended to handle, while the harness can transfer some of the load away from your arms.
It is not an effortless tool. At approximately 5.8–6.2 kg before fuel, it is substantial for a handheld trimmer. You must measure petrol and two-stroke oil accurately, store mixed fuel responsibly, keep the cutting head maintained and manage exhaust noise and vibration. If your property is small or you already own a high-capacity battery platform, a cordless model may be easier to live with.

The available owner evidence is mixed and limited. ProductReview.com.au shows an aggregate 3.0/5 from eight reviews, with sub-scores of 4.0 for value, 4.5 for safety, 3.6 for build quality, 3.6 for ease of use and 3.2 for cleaning and maintenance. Those are user opinions, not a controlled durability test. One verified reviewer described easy starting and simple line loading but reported head failure after roughly nine to ten months of heavy use. Another said it operated well but felt engine-heavy in balance.
What are the RLT254SDSO’s specifications?
The numbers below come from the named product sheet, the Ryobi/Bunnings operator’s manual and CHOICE’s comparison table. They should not be treated as contradictory proof of a defect: manufacturers and test organisations can measure power, cutting diameter and net weight under different conditions.
| Specification | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 25.4cc full-crank, two-stroke | Petrol engine requiring oil mixed with the fuel |
| Power | 0.75 kW on the TTI/Ryobi product sheet; 0.85 kW maximum performance in CHOICE/manual data | Different published measurement conventions; do not compare the figures as if they were the same test |
| Cutting path | 430 mm on the product sheet; 457 mm in the manual and CHOICE data | Likely reflects different head, line or measurement conventions |
| Weight | 5.8 kg in CHOICE’s table; 6.2 kg net on the product sheet | Check whether a listing includes the cutting head, guard or other equipment before comparing |
| Fuel mix | 50:1 petrol to two-stroke oil | Use the specified ratio; do not run straight petrol |
| Fuel-tank capacity | 580 cm³ in the manual | Nominal tank volume; avoid overfilling and follow the manual’s filling instructions |
| Speedwinder line | 2.4 mm line | For the Speedwinder bump-feed head |
| Pro Cut II line | 2.7 mm line supported by the product sheet | Use this diameter only with the compatible Pro Cut II head |
| Warranty | Two-year replacement warranty listed in the product sheet and CHOICE data | Confirm the applicable terms and seller at the time of purchase |
| Australian comparison price | AUD $298 | CHOICE figure accessed in 2026; not a current guaranteed price |
What size yard is it suitable for?
The RLT254SDSO is best suited to a large residential block, acreage edges, long fence lines and properties where a battery trimmer’s runtime would be inconvenient. “Large yard” is a useful category, but it is not a precise area rating: grass density, slope, obstacles, trimming frequency and operator pace can change the workload more than square metres alone.
For a small yard that can be finished in one short session, the petrol preparation and heavier chassis are difficult to justify. For a larger property, the ability to refuel quickly and continue working can be more practical than stopping to recharge batteries. The straight shaft also gives more reach under shrubs, along banks and beneath fencing than many compact curved-shaft tools.

Plan the job around fatigue rather than only fuel capacity. Use the harness, keep both hands on the controls, take breaks and rotate tasks when trimming for a prolonged period. A wide cutting path can reduce passes, but it also demands more care around trees, garden edging and loose stones.
What fuel mix does the RLT254SDSO use?
Use a 50:1 mixture of petrol and approved two-stroke oil. The manual lists a 580 cm³ tank, but tank size does not change the ratio. Measure both liquids accurately in a suitable fuel container, mix them before filling and label the container so it cannot be mistaken for straight petrol.
How to calculate the mixture
- For 1 litre of petrol, add 20 mL of two-stroke oil.
- For 500 mL of petrol, add 10 mL of oil.
- For 5 litres of petrol, add 100 mL of oil.
Use fresh fuel and follow the oil manufacturer’s storage guidance. Never improvise with automotive engine oil, never run the trimmer on unmixed petrol, and stop if the engine behaves as though it is overheating or losing power. Fuel handling should take place outdoors or in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. The exact starting, storage and disposal procedures in the operator’s manual take priority over generic advice.
Which line and head fit the trimmer?
The supplied Speedwinder head is specified for 2.4 mm nylon line and uses bump feed. The product sheet separately identifies the Pro Cut II head as supporting 2.7 mm line. Buy replacement line by diameter and confirm that a replacement head or bump knob is listed for the RLT254SDSO; a visually similar head is not automatically compatible.

Speedwinder is intended to make reloading quicker than dismantling a conventional spool. Turn and load the line according to the head’s markings and the manual, then trim the tails to the specified length. If the line fails to advance, switch the engine off, disconnect the spark-plug lead as directed by the manual and inspect for crossed line, an overfilled spool, damaged eyelets or packed grass.
When should you use the Pro Cut II head?
The Pro Cut II is the supplied alternative when you want to use the specified 2.7 mm line. Do not put 2.7 mm line into a head intended only for 2.4 mm, because excessive friction can prevent feeding and increase load on the drive system. Likewise, a thinner line may wear faster in abrasive conditions.
How heavy and well balanced is it?
Expect roughly 5.8–6.2 kg before fuel, depending on which published measurement you use and what is included. Once fuel and line are added, the carried weight is higher. The straight shaft and harness improve reach and can make long fence-line work more manageable, but they do not turn the tool into a lightweight trimmer.

Balance is personal and depends on harness adjustment, handle position and the attachment fitted. The owner reports available publicly include one account that found the engine side noticeably heavy. Set the harness so the head floats just above the ground, keep the cutting plane controlled and stop if your hands, shoulders or back begin to tire.

What is included in the box?
The product sheet lists the powerhead and upper boom, lower boom with string-head assembly, front handle, grass deflector, Pro Cut II head, Speedwinder handle/head, cutting line, 76 mL of two-stroke oil, combination wrench, harness, drive shaft and operator’s manual. Inventory can vary with market or seller, so check the carton and listing before assuming a particular accessory is present.
How do you set up and use the RLT254SDSO?
Follow the supplied manual for the exact control positions and fastener torque. A safe first-use sequence is:
- Inspect the shaft, guard, handles, harness, line head and fasteners. Do not operate with a cracked guard, loose handle or damaged head.
- Fit the front handle, grass deflector and selected cutting head as shown in the manual. Confirm that the head rotates freely by hand with the engine stopped.
- Prepare the 50:1 fuel mixture in an approved container. Shake or agitate the mixture as recommended, then fill without exceeding the tank’s safe level.
- Attach and adjust the harness. With the engine off, check that the trimmer hangs in a controllable position and that the quick-release can be used if you need to drop the tool.
- Move people, pets, stones and loose objects away from the work area. Wear eye and hearing protection, long trousers, substantial footwear and gloves appropriate to the task.
- Start the engine on stable ground with the cutting head clear. Use the manual’s cold- and warm-start procedure rather than repeatedly guessing at the choke or primer.
- Trim with the line at the specified diameter and keep the deflector fitted. Sweep the head in a controlled arc, avoid forcing it into woody material and release the throttle before moving between areas.
- Stop the engine before clearing wrapped grass, changing line, changing attachments, inspecting the head or carrying the trimmer any distance.
What are its main strengths?
- Petrol runtime: You can continue working after refuelling instead of waiting for a battery pack to charge.
- Large cutting path: Published figures of 430 mm and 457 mm indicate a broad swath, although the measurement basis differs.
- Straight-shaft reach: The layout is useful under shrubs, along fences and on banks.
- Harness support: A correctly adjusted harness can reduce the amount of the tool’s weight held directly by your arms.
- Split-shaft flexibility: Expand-It compatibility gives the powerhead a possible role beyond line trimming when the attachment is confirmed compatible.
- Two head options: The box includes Speedwinder and Pro Cut II arrangements, with different specified line diameters.
These are design and configuration advantages. The cited material does not provide an independent unrestricted performance score for this exact model, so they should not be read as proof that it cuts faster or lasts longer than every cordless or petrol competitor.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Carried weight: At up to 6.2 kg net before fuel, it can become tiring on steep or extended jobs.
- Fuel preparation: A 50:1 ratio must be measured correctly every time.
- Petrol ownership: Fuel storage, stale mixture, spark-plug checks, air-filter cleaning and engine maintenance add work that cordless users avoid.
- Vibration and noise: The manual notes that actual vibration exposure changes with operating conditions. Take exposure breaks and follow its safety guidance.
- Discontinued status: CHOICE’s comparison data places newer cordless models alongside this petrol model and identifies the RLT254SDSO as discontinued, so future availability may be less predictable.
- Uncertain long-term reliability: The eight-review ProductReview.com.au sample includes positive and negative experiences but is too small and uncontrolled to establish a failure rate.
How should you maintain it safely?
After each session, let the engine cool, brush grass from the guard and head, inspect the line and check for loose fasteners. Keep air-intake areas clear and follow the manual’s service intervals for the air filter, spark plug, fuel system and drive components. Store the machine clean and dry, with the cutting head protected from accidental contact.

Before any repair or head work, switch off the engine, allow hot parts to cool and isolate the spark plug as instructed. If the shaft, clutch, head or fuel system is damaged, use a qualified service centre rather than operating with a temporary repair.

Can you still get replacement parts?
Common consumables such as the specified 2.4 mm nylon line, spark plug, air filter and compatible bump components may be easier to source than model-specific assemblies. The product sheet’s included parts and the manual’s diagrams are useful when checking a listing, but availability depends on country and seller because the petrol model is no longer current in some comparison catalogues.
For a replacement head, bump knob, spool or attachment, match the exact RLT254SDSO designation and head type. Confirm thread, shaft and guard compatibility before ordering; do not assume that a part for another Ryobi trimmer fits because it uses the same colour or brand name. Keep the serial or model label and proof of purchase for warranty enquiries.
How does it compare with a cordless trimmer?
The most useful comparison is not engine size alone. Compare the complete workload and ownership routine:
| Decision factor | RLT254SDSO petrol model | Typical cordless alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Continue after refuelling, subject to fuel supply | Limited by battery capacity and charging time |
| Preparation | Mix and store 50:1 fuel; perform engine maintenance | Charge battery and fit line; less engine maintenance |
| Weight | 5.8–6.2 kg published before fuel | Varies by battery and platform; exact comparable figure is not stated here |
| Cutting path | 430 mm on product sheet or 457 mm in manual/CHOICE data | Varies by model |
| Line loading | Speedwinder 2.4 mm; Pro Cut II supports 2.7 mm | Varies by head and manufacturer |
| Attachments | Split shaft and stated Expand-It capability | Usually model-specific; verify before buying |
| Noise and exhaust | Petrol engine produces exhaust and vibration | No tailpipe exhaust during use |
| Warranty evidence | Two-year replacement warranty is listed in the product sheet and CHOICE data | Depends on the individual model and market |
CHOICE lists newer Ryobi cordless models beside this trimmer, but its detailed RLT254SDSO performance scores are member-only. That means the available public information supports a feature and ownership comparison, not a definitive ranking against every newer model.
Who should buy the RLT254SDSO?
Choose it if you have a large property, need petrol-style continuous operation, prefer a straight shaft and harness, and can accept mixing fuel and servicing a two-stroke engine. It also makes sense when Expand-It attachment compatibility is valuable and a suitable used or remaining-stock unit is available with verifiable warranty support.
Look elsewhere if you trim only a small lawn, dislike fuel storage, need the lightest possible tool, have strict noise or exhaust restrictions, or want a currently supported battery platform. A cordless trimmer may cost more or less depending on batteries and chargers, so compare the complete system rather than the bare tool.
Ryobi RLT254SDSO verdict: is it worth buying?
The RLT254SDSO remains a practical large-yard petrol trimmer on paper: its 25.4cc full-crank engine, wide published cutting path, straight shaft, harness and split-shaft design target demanding residential work. The Speedwinder and Pro Cut II options make line selection flexible, provided you use 2.4 mm and 2.7 mm line with the correct head.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Its value depends on whether those capabilities outweigh the 5.8–6.2 kg carried weight, 50:1 fuel routine, vibration and uncertain parts availability for a discontinued model. Treat the AUD $298 figure as historical Australian comparison data, inspect any remaining unit carefully, confirm the two-year replacement warranty with the seller and budget for consumables and maintenance. For a large yard and an owner comfortable with petrol equipment, it can still be a sensible tool; for light, infrequent trimming, its ownership burden is hard to justify.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much oil goes into a 5-litre fuel mix for this trimmer?
At the specified 50:1 ratio, add 100 mL of approved two-stroke oil to 5 litres of petrol. Mix it in a labelled fuel container before filling the trimmer, and do not use the tank’s 580 cm³ capacity as a substitute for measuring the ratio.
Can I use metal blades on the RLT254SDSO?
The supplied configuration is a nylon-line trimmer, and the cited material does not establish approval for a metal blade conversion. Do not fit a blade unless the operator’s manual and an authorised parts listing specifically identify that attachment and the required guard.
Why does my line stop feeding from the Speedwinder head?
Common causes include the wrong line diameter, crossed or overfilled line, debris around the eyelets, or a worn bump mechanism. Stop the engine, isolate the spark plug as directed, remove the spool and reload 2.4 mm line exactly according to the head markings.
Is the two-year warranty transferable when buying a used unit?
The product sheet and CHOICE data list a two-year replacement warranty, but they do not establish transfer rules for second-hand sales. Ask the seller or warranty provider about proof-of-purchase, original-owner and discontinued-model conditions before relying on coverage.
What should I check before buying remaining stock?
Confirm that the model label is RLT254SDSO, inspect the shaft and head for cracks, check that the engine turns freely, look for fuel-system deterioration and verify that the manual, guard, harness and both advertised heads are included. Also obtain written confirmation of current parts and warranty support in your country.
