The Indian rupee fell for a second consecutive session on Friday, 23 October 2026, slipping 12 paise to a provisional close of ₹94.93 per U.S. dollar. Higher crude prices, weaker Indian equities, renewed Saudi-Houthi tensions and foreign-investor selling combined to keep the currency under pressure. The rupee opened at ₹94.78, touched ₹94.98 intraday and finished at ₹94.93, after losing 43 paise to ₹94.81 in the previous session.
Why did the rupee fall 12 paise?
Dealers cited several connected pressures rather than a single trigger. Brent crude was trading near USD 114 a barrel, raising concern about India’s import bill because the country pays for much of its oil in dollars. Domestic share markets also weakened, while renewed tensions involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement threatened additional volatility in energy markets.
A firmer U.S. currency added to the pressure. The U.S. Dollar Index stood at 101.73, up 0.12% in the reported market snapshot. Foreign investors were also selling Indian equities, creating demand for dollars as investment proceeds were repatriated.

Brent crude futures rose 1.01% to USD 114.31 a barrel. For an oil-importing economy, an abrupt rise in crude can widen the trade deficit and increase demand for dollars from refiners and other importers. The Saudi-Houthi tensions cited by traders increased the risk that supply or shipping concerns could push prices even higher.

Weak domestic markets and foreign flows
The Sensex fell 125.56 points to 73,123.83, while the Nifty declined 87.65 points to 22,600. Foreign institutional investors sold a net ₹3,458.70 crore of Indian equities on Thursday, according to the report. Such outflows can weigh on the rupee because investors selling local assets generally convert the proceeds into dollars.

In USD-INR quotations, a higher number means the rupee is weaker because more rupees are needed to buy one dollar. The ₹94.98 low therefore represented the session’s weakest point for the Indian currency before it recovered slightly into the provisional close.

Why was dollar liquidity described as better?
Near-term dollar liquidity was reported to have improved after the Jio Platforms initial public offering. By 12:03 p.m., the issue had received bids for 136.32 crore shares against 19.75 crore shares on offer—almost seven times subscribed. Qualified institutional buyers bid for 70.85 crore shares against 4.90 crore reserved, a 14.46-times subscription.
The institutional bids included 34.51 crore shares from domestic financial institutions, 26.95 crore from foreign institutional investors and 4.40 crore from mutual funds. Those flows can temporarily increase the availability of dollars or reduce immediate demand in the spot market, even while broader risk sentiment remains negative.

What are the key levels and near-term outlook for USD-INR?
Anuj Choudhary, research analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said he expected the rupee to retain a “slight negative bias” because of elevated crude prices, escalating Middle East tensions, weak domestic markets and foreign-investor selling. He identified a near-term USD-INR spot range of 94.65 to 95.25.
The lower end, 94.65, is a potential support area in that published range; 95.25 is the upper level traders were told to watch if selling pressure intensifies. These are an analyst’s expectations, not guaranteed trading limits. U.S. and Indian purchasing managers’ index data were identified as upcoming cues that could shift the outlook.

- Softening U.S. Treasury yields could reduce demand for dollar assets and help emerging-market currencies.
- Fresh intervention by the Reserve Bank of India could supply dollars or smooth unusually sharp moves.
- A decline in crude prices or a reduction in geopolitical risk would ease pressure on India’s import payments.
- Improving Indian equity sentiment could slow foreign outflows and reduce conversion into dollars.
How do crude oil, foreign flows and the RBI affect the rupee?
Crude affects the currency through the trade balance: costlier imports require more dollars, while cheaper oil reduces that requirement. Foreign portfolio flows work through capital accounts and market sentiment; sustained selling tends to weaken the rupee, whereas buying can support it. The RBI can influence short-term conditions by buying or selling dollars and managing liquidity, although intervention does not permanently remove the underlying effect of oil prices, interest-rate differentials or capital flows.
The 23 October move was provisional, so the officially recorded closing rate may be revised after final exchange-market processing. The reported figures describe that session and should not be treated as a forecast beyond the stated 94.65–95.25 range.
